Dooger's is my favorite Restaurant in Long Beach! Every visit I always have to stop there for lunch or dinner at least once. The food is always great and the service is spot on regardless of how packed it might be.
I was in on Thusday with my sister and we both got the admirals platter (*the lite meal, sauteed cajun style) it was to die for and precisely what I was hoping for on my trip!
The starter salad that comes with the meal is one thing I look forward to with the fresh bay shrimp on top with ranch. Yum Yum! yeah the actual salad itself more than likely comes out of a bag, but it's still a delight.
I came back again with my mom on Sunday, we had just beat the rush, but even with the place packed the service, again, was super! The food great and served in a timely manner. I highly suggest this restaurant to anyone passing through the area! Try the chowder, it's really yummy, and if you like cajun style, get the calamari or the admirals platter if you're in the mood to mix things up! -

Been here several times in Long Beach; usually for lunch. The soup/salad quick lunch is pretty good ($9 i think?). The chowder is all everyone says it is, loaded with chunks of clam. The flavor is ok, but its no Rays Boat House, which is my #1 favorite clam chowder. ;)
I had a BLT and bowl of soup this trip, the BLT had lots of bacon, sourdough nicely toasted. We also ordered calamari appetizer, which came out in thick ropes of squid pieces, not your typical sturdily deep fried calamari rings, we liked it ok.
Service very attentive, coffee and water frequently checked, wait staff pleasant, friendly, and accomodating of my son and his girlfriend annoying menu substitutions and adjustments. :)
Its expensive for what you get, lunch for 5 with no alcohol and just two coffees as drinks was $80 after tip. And we had NO seafood aside from the chowder and calamari, if you wanted halibut or razor clams expect to pay quite a bit more. -

Okay. The one in Seaside is much better.

Well i don't exactly eat out seafood all the time..so i don't know what a normal price is but i can say eating seafood with a family on a budget can be tricky here. can't really afford 17.00+ a person with our family of 5. the hubby and i both ordered the cod and fries which also came with a good size side salad with generous amount of shrimp on it and a slice of garlic bread. we got like 6-7 pieces of cod. all pretty good size chunks. at least 3 good bites out of each piece. just the right size of fries. we were happy campers. that was about 13.95 each.
the hubby also ordered a cup of chowder which was loaded with clams but a bit runny for his taste. it Taste better thick and creamy but he said it was still good.
the service was great and the waitress was lovely and nice.
there are cold sandwich meals with i believe soup or salad that's cheaper..or burgers and fries all under 10.00 that i saw. over all very good but can be pricey. -

I can't believe all the great reviews of this place. I have been here three times. When I visit the folks, we always go on Wednesday night, or should I say late afternoon because it's half off for seniors night.
We got there right at 4pm, the place was packed, I was the youngest person in the restaurant by 20 years, and I'm 49.
The first two times I ate here, I had salmon and halibut, both very disappointing. Last week I had the petrale sole, which was supposedly fresh, it was not, I doubt that it was petrale either, more like Dover or English which are less expensive. The three tiny fillets were coated in cracker meal and pan fried, very well done, dry as soda crackers and unseasoned, served with tartar sauce and an over cooked and several hour old baked potato.
They serve a decent sized salad with the meal, with some bay shrimp that most people seem to think are fresh, with crappy dressings.
The service has always been attentive, the prices are way too high for the quality they serve. -

We had the "quick lunch" consisting of a cup of clam chowder, salad & garlic toast. Chowder was full of clams & was seasoned perfectly. Salad was crisp and topped with tiny shrimp. The garlic toast was a nice touch. We thought it was a great lunch. We wonder about the two dollar signs - it did not seem expensive to us.
The service was fast and very pleasant. We would definitely recommend this restaurant. -

I got the fish and chips, and the chowder both supposed to the best out there. The fish were bite sized and you only got 4 of them and mean bite sized and the chowder was very watery not creamy. I will never eat here again!!

Well, it's kinda hard to take a place seriously that's called "Dooger's". And yet, that's where we found ourselves for dinner. Using the tried and true method of seeing how many cars are on the parking lot on Saturday night, this looked like a good bet. Also, it seemed like being on the beach, might as well have some seafood.
The inside is really open, almost like you're sharing your meal with the rest of the restaurant. I usually prefer some booths or something. Lots of items on the menu (mostly seafood). One thing that really rubbed me the wrong way from the start is that there is a lunch and a dinner price clearly marked on the menu. Now this just makes me feel like I'm getting ripped off for dinner. Which kind of seems to be the case. $20 for halibut and chips? Urrrmmm....
I had trouble deciding on anything in particular, and having had a bad run on fish and chips lately decided on the "Admiral's Platter", which is a seafood platter for someone who doesn't know what they want. I briefly considered insisting that the waitress call me "Admiral" for the rest of my meal. It had salmon, halibut, crab meat (from the leg), scallops, calamari, and clams. On the side was some toast, fries (chose these over the potato or rice), and a salad.
I was in the mood for some beer. They have a reasonable selection of microbrews as well as your usual redneck swill, and I was happy to see Blue Moon as the special beer. But sadly it turns out none of it is on tap so I passed on this. It seemed like the kind of place that might have a few draft beers but I was disappointed. I did get a good laugh though that they were advertising a special beer and it was in a bottle. What, did someone just buy a case of whatever was on sale at Safeway?
The salad was average. I suspect the dressing was Kraft. It was covered with those tiny little pink shrimp. I've never really cared for these and could have done without them.
I chose the Cajun seasoning for the seafood plate. Other choices were breaded or sauteed. I actually didn't care for it that much. All the seafood came in a bowl and was a lot like a stew, which I wasn't expecting. This made everything taste basically the same. The "seasoning" was overpowering. I couldn't really tell if I was having fresh seafood or something out of the freezer. The halibut was about the only thing that worked in the "stew". The clams were deep-fried and tough. Everything else just tasted like stew. Pretty disappointing. If I were to order this again (and I wouldn't), I'd get it sauteed.
My wife had the grilled salmon. It didn't really taste grilled to me (maybe broiled?), but it was ok.
The fries were actually really good. Crisp and tasty. For dessert we split a mudd pie, which was really good and not too big.
The service was about what I'd expect -- no problem getting soft drink refills like someone else mentioned. The waitress was nice.
All in all it was filling for both of us. We got out for $50, which I thought was about the upper end of what I'd consider reasonable for what we ended up getting. We did have to pay at the counter, which the waitress made no mention of.
Now after dinner I felt the need to do some purging if you know what I mean. Out of courtesy for my wife I decided the restaurant was the best place to take care of this to avoid fuming up the hotel room. But the bathroom stunk and by the looks of things my ass would have stuck to the toilet seat, so I'm taking a star off for this.
Overall not a bad experience, but I wouldn't call it anything more than average. Next time I'm in town I look forward to trying some other places. -

Hey Doogers, you're okay.
We had lunch here twice over a long holiday weekend and it seems they don't do anything spectacularly at Doogers, but everything they do, they do ... oka-a-ay. One thumb up. Out of a possible two.
We walked in on the Fourth of July and Doogers was filled to the rafters with people. I thought for sure there would be a wait, but lo-and-behold, they brought us straight to a table for four at the back.
Any place I can order a grilled cheese sandwich without resorting to the kids menu is automatically on my short list of places to go for lunch. Doogers does grilled cheese right. Tillamook cheese, plenty-o-butter, nice and crisp. Their coleslaw was sweet and crunchy and everything that coleslaw should be (even if the waitress did call it "cold" slaw).
My companion's tuna sandwich either needed a waxed-paper wrapper with toothpick or more mayo in the filling ... either would have helped to keep it from exploding all over her plate at the first bite. She resorted to eating it with a fork and knife. Tuna sandwich, tuna salad, whatever. She ate it all and said it was highly edible.
I was told the chowder is delicious. Creamy and full of oysters (at least as many oysters as potatoes).
The halibut fish and chips mostly lived up to their $20 price tag. The fish is amazingly fresh! ...But then again, we were at the coast, so how hard is it *really* to find fresh fish?
I do wish Doogers would be a little more conscious of kids' palates. My son's chicken fingers were as hot as your Cold War nightmares -- they were served straight out of the fryer, I think. By the time they'd cooled enough to eat without blistering him, the rest of us had nearly finished our food.
Our waitress did tell us that our check would be paid up at the register. And we really enjoyed spying on the ocean life in Doogers' huge fish tank. -

No, no, no, no, no.
This is why you should never trust a place with one five star review (oddly enough, Eric K.'s review was not posted under this listing until after I wrote mine).
After walking around Long Beach/Seaview for a while, we wanted to get some decent seafood and looked to Yelp for answers. One FIVE star review, you say? Well alright!
No.
As we approached the nondescript building filled with blue-hairs, the sense of adventure kept me from turning around and heading towards the Crab Pot we had passed a few minutes earlier. Lesson learned. I've already blocked most of it out of my head since there were so many other fantastic places we discovered, so I will just pass along the things that really stood out to me.
Service was okay. It seemed like we had a different person help us for each aspect of the meal; but honestly, the place is small enough that it could be covered by two well-trained servers instead of the 5 or 6 that seemed to be milling about the dining area.
As for food - my halibut was cut in the most bizarre way (after working in a seafood restaurant AND living in Seattle for 10 years eating god knows how many servings of fish and chips, I had never seen anything like it) and though the actual fish was good, the breading was limp, the tartar sauce was much too mayo-y and every single salad comes topped with tiny shrimp. All of the dinner salads. Yes. The dressing selection was extremely limited and I find Kraft Blue Cheese Dressing more impressive than what was slopped over my shrimp covered salad. Though I did not pay it, I'm sure the bill was much too high for the quality of food that we were served.
As pointed out by my lovely friend Danielle, Doogers is just one letter away from boogers. So, there's that.
P.S. You have to take your bill up to the counter to pay, but don't expect your waitress to pass that little nugget of info along.Listed in: NO BUENO!, It's hard to live in the…

Review from John E.
On our way out of town for the trip home the Wife wanted one last shot at seafood for lunch. I've been to Doogers before and it wasn't too memorable; I couldn't remember hating it so we stopped in for lunch. I thought to myself that the building looks like an old Denny's remodeled. This should have been a harbinger of things to come.
Since I was not expecting to be impressed they managed to hit right my expectation level. The food was okay, not great but it didn't repulse me. I felt only slightly cheated for the portion of fish versus the price I paid. The Wife seemed pretty happy with her Shrimp Louie salad, but again, pricey. Tax Deduction is always happy with a good grilled cheese and fries.
What really got me was absolutely no offer to refill our drinks, which were empty for a while. Now you could argue with me about not asking but I am rubber and you are glue, whatever you say bounces off me to sticks to you. Besides, if you choose to make your living as a waiter/waitress shouldn't keeping people's glasses full instantly be on your mind as being on the road to a good tip? She was nice enough, but just a little lacking in the details.
Now I will give them credit for two things; first they keep a real nice aquarium there (no, you don't pick your meal out of it) that the Tax Deduction was enamoured with, when we went to look at it for the second time in the meal the hostess let him feed the fish; second, they put out bags of bread loaf heels that you can take for free to feed the winged rats on the beach (seagulls). Throw bread, see the moochers catch bread pieces in mid-air, possibly get shat upon and the cachophony of seagull noise sounds like the movie Finding Nemo (mine.) -

Dooger's is the only place to eat while in Long Beach!!!
Okay, that may not be entirely true. I've heard there are some really good new places around, as well as some great restaurants in nearby Illwaco. But whenever I'm in Long Beach, I always end up here. The Clam Chowder is some of the best you'll ever have. It's so loaded with clams, it's truly a meal in and of itself.
But don't stop there! Enjoy a crab melt, you'll thank me for the suggestion. Great salads as well, and a "what's fresh" chalkboard on the wall.
The fish n' chips are, as to be expected, yummy yummy.
Also a great selection on Northwest Microbrews. You'll hit the trinket shops satiated with beachy goodness! -

A little pricey for the meal but otherwise it fulfills most appetites. My daughters meal was huge for a 6year old so portions for them are large. We got the pan fried oysters to start. They were very tasty and got me excited. Ive got simple tastes for lunchtime meals and scored a tuna sandwich that was great in my opinion. My wife needed her fulfillment of a Pan Fried Razor Clam, she couldn't finish it and I was the benefactor there in the end. Quick, polite service makes this place perfect for the lunchtime crowd that are on vacation.

We were on our way into town, and this is one of the first restaurants we came across. We decided to go in for a bite because driving from Seattle, we had not eaten yet and were starving!
We go inside and I guess this would be a "nice" place to eat considering where we were.
We took a look at the menu, and it seemed kind of overpriced! Locals probably couldn't afford to eat at this place, seems to be mainly a tourist spot! $20 for an order of grilled salmon? Come on, this is a restaurant called Doogers, not Newport! You'd expect a local seafood restaurant, RIGHT on the water to have so much seafood, they'd be giving it away!
When we ordered, the food was not that great either. Their clam chowder was runny with chunks of something in it. The fish and chips also looked like frozen fish sticks (how do you get unprocessed cod into the shape of a rectangle?).
I have nothing good to say about this place. Oh, I also ordered the razor clams which were listed on the specials sheet, and they didn't even have any!
No thank you, next time if I ever head back over to Long Beach, I will stick to something more hole-in-the-wall looking! -

Not only was the food top notch. The clam chowder was on par with the best I have ever had! But the service was above and beyond. The water never got below 3/4 full, the service was prompt and professional and it was clear they have mastered the lost art of actually providing service! Top notch overall and more then deserves 5 stars and a high recommendation!

Federal Way, WA
There are lots of places that do good seafood in Long Beach. Doogers is the best casual family restaurant that also has cooks that know about spices and how to treat fresh seafood. Not the cheapest, but for what you get - wow!
The clam chowder is terrific and the batter used for frying seafood is light and tasty. So try out the fish and chips. Or the rock shrimp. Scallops are good too. Heck, there isn't anything even down into the average range fare. Just depends what you enjoy. And anything off the what is fresh list you can count on. Great sandwiches too! -

This place is a little low on ambiance, which can really be a good thing with seafood.
The clam chowder was clammy and creamy - simple yet good. Fried clams done to perfection, and a decent beer list. All in all inexpensive, unpretentious, simple, good seafood. A nice change of pace from a lot of what you'll find on Long Beach! -

Sorry but if I wanted to eat frozen Costco food, I'd have gone to Costco and eaten for an eighth of the price. Halibut squares with some kind of leathery batter for $13 (lunch). My friend had the prawns. Hmmm, me thinks not. Ordered a $2 glass of lemonade. It was florescent green and must have been diet. We both got nauseated from whatever fake sweetener was in it. It didn't mention that on the menu. Not everyone is on a diet. How can you mess up lemonade for G-s sake? For those who rate it 4 or 5 stars, I'm not sure if you are employees or have never eaten anywhere other than McDonalds but this is NOT good food!

Restaurants come and go, wax and wane in Longbeach...except Dooger's. We visit LB every year...and most of the pros--and a few of the cons--listed above regarding Dooger's are valid; the decor is worthless, there is no view, and on any day remotely connected with a holiday or festival, the joint is slammed. The food, however, is consistently well-prepared, and the manager always manages to hire at least one master of the fryolator arts. And it's dependably the same every year: you can count on a decent, solid seafood experience every time you come to town. If you have any experience with the beachtowns of WA and OR, you know that's not always the case: last year's hot property is this year's ptomaine trap or attractive lease opportunity. Don't worry, Dooger's will be there, and you'll eat pretty well.

Very friendly and helpful waitress. The crab cakes were delightful. The "starter salad" was quite a bit larger than the norm and had yummy bay shrimp on top. I tried two of their house made dressings both tasty (honey mustard and ranch...) though I was quite full I decided to try the house made peanutbutter pie yum. I quite enjoyed this place and I saw other singleton dinners, families, couples and so I got the feeling as it is mid week in the off season that locals come here!

Dooger's is a nice place that is rather not-fancy and doesn't exactly have the decor thing down. However, the service is generally very prompt and the food is good. Not great, but good. Portions are a bit small for the price. Still, it's reliably good and worth a visit if you're on the peninsula.

Doogers' clam chowder was full of clams. The halibut steak was flaky and moist. The salads were topped with shrimp. The Petrale Sole was lightly breaded and moist. The service was fine.

It's not an awful restaurant. It's just not great either.
The service is fine. The wait is usually awful, which I can only assume means that people haven't tried it before and don't know better.
The prices are a bit high for the amount and quality of the food. Most everything we got seemed to be prepackaged right off the Sysco truck.
It is fairly conveniently located, and can accommodate larger parties of people with some notice.
The best thing about this place is the large aquarium at the front in the waiting area. I guess they know that the wait time is not worth it, so they distract the kiddos with fishies. -

Worst clam chowder ever!!! Tasted like nothing but salt, water and potatoes. Very few clams and minced potatoes.......never again. I had the admirals plate dinner and I was not impressed. Only 1 tiny piece of crab and a very tough razor clam (I can make them at home so much better), the rest of it was okay. We will not be going here again. Prices were high for the amount of food you receive.

Lake Forest Park, WA
My family loves Dooger's and we eat there every time we go to Long Beach - sometimes twice. The fish and chips are the best I have ever had - and I have tried many (plus you can get a baked potato instead of fries, which wins big points with me). And I personally love the green salad with shrimp. Get it with 1000 Island dressing and it's like a mini shrimp louie. No, it is not fine dining but when you have kids that kind of dining is out of the question anyway. Speaking of kids, they have a great kids' menu with lots of choices, including clam strips, which thrilled my son. The prices are reasonable. If you love seafood and you don't need a pretentious dining experience, I can heartily recommend Dooger's - especially if you have kids.
