You what kind restaurant I like? The kind that will give you a shitload of really good food for a ridiculously low amount. This is why I love Doodles.

This place is kind of small and unassuming - and the fact that their sign has a giant ice cream cone on it made me pass right by it many times thinking it was a Tastee Freeze knock off. The inside is a little piecemeal but cool. There's all this New Orleans folk art around and their booths are covered in this cheap 1800's newsprint wallpaper - kind of like the old Wendy's used to have.

I ordered the Boudin platter with dirty rice and gumbo. If you've never had Boudin, you need to - and you need to do it at Doodles. It's a pork, rice, and spicy seasoning mixture that's made into a sausage and it's delicious. The outside was just crispy enough, the inside was a good balance of pork to rice and the seasoning was perfect.

The dirty rice was good, but tasted a lot like the boudin - which in retrospect, ordering the dirty rice as a side was a stupid thing to do and if I could do it over I'd probably get the crawfish etouffee or jambalaya as a side.

Speaking of sides, they have like 10 choices - including those above, red beans & rice, slaw, shrimp creole and others. Alas, you only get two per platter so it may take awhile to try them all.

The gumbo was really good. One of the things I liked about it was that it had huge chunks of andouille sausage and chicken and lots of veggies. So you know they aren't just watering the crap down to make a "filler side."

The husband got the Muffuletta with red beans and rice and potato salad. The waitress talked him into getting 1/2 sandwich which was definitely the right thing to do seeing as it was roughly the size of a regulation football. The Muffuletta was pretty good, but had a little too much olive salad for my taste. The red beans and rice were just right and the potato salad was awesome with chunks of potato and egg.

The staff, although really young, were polite and attentive and didn't make me feel like the old lady that I am. Our waitress talked us into ordering there signature dessert the ooie gooey which is some sort of hot cookie/cake kind of thing with pornographic sauce (I think that's the gooey part). While completely delicious, it was so sweet I had heart palpitations for an hour after eating it.

Oh and our bill? It was right around $20 for two people to completely stuff themselves and even take home left overs. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes good cheap Cajun food.

Great sandwich house featuring Cajun-style dishes like muffalettas and gumbo. You can "Bayou" a New Orleans-style muffaletta or other tasty treats at Doodles. Shrimp Creole ,red beans and rice are great accompanyments if you are up to the great size of a platter meal.

For those with less spicy tastes the patty melt as well as the greek salad  are both good choices.
