As I reflect on it, I have been to a surprising amount of pottery studios. Yes, over the years I have painted many a piece. I really enjoy it - it stresses me out/releases my limited creativity and always makes a great gift (I am sure to paint useful things, like bowls and plates - not ash trays and molded animal shit).
Doodlebug is not the best place that I have been, but We Create in Petaluma has sadly closed its doors, so I was forced to find another. I first came here with people from work for a "bonding" exercise, ditched them and came back on my own. The reason I choose here despite that it's a little dumpy and overcrowded, the staff is detached - is because they have a great selection of things to paint. Really. They're a little lacking in paint color choice, but this is the best place I have found and I have been lackadaisically searching, let me tell you.
Don't let my surliness detract from your venture, you will go and you will find it functional, fun and artistic. Good for you.

I love doodlebug.
The owner is so warm and friendly. I was really sad when the flooding completely took out San Anselmo Avenue (the other year) and I couldn't visit my lil bug for months!!!
They leave a dog bowl outside.
The first time I walked in, they explained the process to me, and took me to the paints and told me about the differences. I experimented with a ceramic tile. I hunched over my tiles for hours... paint, paint, blowdry, and there were no complaints.
Its funny how something so simple is so therapeutic. My tile painting graduated to sushi plates, and large platters for gifts. It takes a week to get your piece fired and glazed, so it gets addicting when you come back to pick up you want to do more...
There are many things little ones can do - mugs, piggybanks and seasonal things.
There is a pottery class, mosaic class and they do parties too!
They sell gifts too if you want to pop in for that - its a beautiful place to be in and create for adults and kids alike.

Fantastic art supply, art class, cool gift and social shop. Walk in to paint pottery pieces - 5 day firing turnaround and price to fire included in the unfinished piece pricing. Take art & crafts classes in everything from papermaking and pottery to knitting and drawing. Classes for every age throughout the week.
Pajama nights for ages 3+. Great to get some family time in. Not sure if you can just drop the buggers off!
Think of this as Flax, Michael's and Amsterdam Art rolled up into a compact, funky friendly environment - like Amsterdam Art in the 80s-90s.

Great place to go paint pottery the only thing is you have to walk through all the toys to get to the painting area so it is a bit of a pain with a 3 1/ 2 year old!
but love it!
