This place is an eye sore in an area that is full of character. It's food is even less appealing. The salmon fillet was overly salted. They probably forgot to take cooking 101 which teaches you that salmon has its natural saltiness. This is a waste of space in Mt Vernon.
Donna's in Mount Vernon is a great place to linger. The waitstaff lets you linger at the doorway when you walk in, starving for the first meal of the day at 1pm; you get ample time to ponder how you will order that requisite pint glass of ice water after you've been seated; you even get more slow-paced goodness while you wait for your order to arrive, as you watch plate after plate of other entrees pop up at the kitchen ledge.
Despite the slow pace of service, Donna's serves a decent, reliable meal with the air of being healthy and good for you. It's a great coffee bar with reliable lattes and a good go-to spot for a salad or light meal. I would really give the food three stars; the fourth I chalk up to nostalgia. (I used to love the Charles Village location when I lived up there years ago.)
Pumpkin cheesecake and roasted sweet potatoes are wonderful here.
Donna's is fine, but it would be much, much, MUCH better if they didn't allow smoking inside. It drifts right over from the bar to the dining area and is disgusting.
Donna's, if you're listening, take it outside -- I'm breathing here!

The location is great - right on Mt. Vernon Square, and my marinara pizza with sausage was really tasty (it helps that I was starving). But the service was pretty bad--our waitress took FOREVER to come take our order, refill our drinks, and bring out the food. Otherwise, it's a decent cafe chain that offers a diverse menu for lunch (lots of salads, a variety of sandwiches, and some pizzas). The desserts were very good. Didn't go for dinner so I don't know what it's like at night. Also, we sat outside; the interior looks nice, though, a casual place with just enough touches of class to make it worthwhile.
