4 reviews for Donita's Cantina
With all due respect, this place was crappy from start to finish. We came here because we wanted a quick, cheap dinner and my fellow yelpers said it was good. However, as an unnamed local we later met in a gallery said, this place should be nicknamed "don't eat us."
They serve Tostitos!!!! No joke. I am all about chips and salsa, but if you're going to make them complimentary, please serve both. After being seated by an individual who was either high or downright weird, we were handed a basket of Tostitos. I know a Tostito when I see/taste one. However, no salsa. Huh? Free chips? Where's the second part to that duo? Out of principle we did not order the salsa. We did make the mistake, however, of ordering the queso, which was nothing more than a combination of various cheeses microwaved/melted into a dish - it honestly looked like a 5 year old's attempt at cooking (and tasted as such).
Our queue to leave should have been the worn in table cloths - not the cute, kitschy kind like you'd find at your grandmother's, but the nasty, worn in kind that make you skeptical of how clean the place is.
Onto the entrees, which are best summarized as a heaping mess of canned food thrown on a plate. The chicken soft tacos were bland and overstuffed with romaine lettuce (I ordered chicken tacos, not lettuce tacos, thank you very much). The rice and beans were tasteless. My husband ordered enchiladas, which honestly looked like cheese soup mixed with canned salsa verde.
The service was fine I suppose, but if you want mexican for dinner, you are much better off at Teocalli Tamale's. Granted, Teocalli's doesn't have table service and rice/beans, etc.....but the food is SO much better.
Save your money and your tastebuds - Donita's is a restaurant to skip.
All I have to mention is their salsa and those who've been here know what I mean! From their margaritas to their hostess staff you'll feel immediately welcomed right when you walk into this restaurant. It's busy but soooo worth the wait!!! Their quaint atmosphere is spiced up with amazing mexican food with spices that will wake up your tired palate and remind you what spicey food should taste like! Save room for dessert!
I should qualify this review as only being of the bar and not the actually food. The place was definitely popular and full. The frozen margaritas are pitiful and I wouldn't recommend. Salsa was actually very good and fresh; however, the tortilla chips were run of the mill and definitely not made at the restaurant as common to the Texas Tex-mex eateries I am used to.
They are family and group friendly. If you go with large group of adults (eg 7+ people), be prepared to be seated in the family section with many excitable kids.
Donita's has been a family favorite for years. Awesome food and great service combine on a consistent basis to make this a must-visit if you are anywhere near Crested Butte.
