THIS STORE IS SOOOO LOUD. GIVE ME A MOMENT TO COLLECT MY THOUGHTS FOR THIS REVIEW...
okay. This is one hell of a store. Its madness. They have all sorts of electronics blaring down each aisle, a muffled intercom going non stop. You have Hi Def VCR players (they exist??) on one aisle and next to it is Muscle Milk.. next to that is Adult briefs and tampons, next to that is the produce section. Its crazy! You know those random shops you find in china town with an explosion of random items outside their door you wonder how the heck stays in business? Well this store is like that but Walmart sized!! Kinda cool cause you do find anything and everything you would need + its open super late. Gives us last minute souvenir shopping at a discount. -

Don Quijote is a mixed bag. For those who either reside or work near the Kapiolani/Keeaumoku area, Don Quijote offers convenience in location, hours and wide and varied selection of items. In addition, there is dry cleaning service and a CPB bank located inside.
There are few markets where I can purchase Japanese Ponzu sauce, Korean Ramen, Pet foods, DVD player, beer, cough medicine, bananas, frozen chicken, and t-shirts at 3 o'clock in the morning.
And yet, there are some downsides to shopping here.
First, the fruits and vegetables are rarely fresh. Second, compared to other markets such as Foodland or even Nijiya, , most of their items are often priced much higher. I guess this is the price we pay for convenience. -

This review is solely on customer service.
I called customer service today to ask a simple question just to see if they're giving out goodie bags for the New Year. The lady named, MADDIE WAS VERY RUDE!!! She had a sassy tone but I thanked her anyway for the info and she just HUNG UP ON ME!!! I know it wasn't by mistake cause I heard a click. People like this with no manners make me not want to be polite anymore. Man, whatever happened to GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE??!!
For many years I enjoyed shopping there because of their variety of asian food products. However after this experience, I won't go there for awhile. Nijiya, Shirokiya, & Marukai are the places I'll shop for my asian stuff.
Anyhoo, I won't let this minor stuff get me down. Happy New Year everyone! ^_^ -

Mom: "Don't forget Val! You are making your Ozoni for New Years Day."
Ingredients for Val's Ozoni Recipe:
Water
Chicken broth
Beef broth
Sea bass bones
Iriko
Mirin
Whole straw mushrooms
King mushrooms
Enoki mushrooms
Araimo
Daikon
Mizuna
Leeks
Abalone like shellfish
Lobster
Clam
Shrimp
Mochi
The one stop shop that I go to, to get all the ingredients for my Ozoni is Don Quiote.
This year the only store that I could find mizuna was ......Don Quiote.
I like to beat the crowd and shop for my ingredients two days before January 1st. You will be sorry if you decide to go shopping on December 31st. You just might find that they are out of certain items. Be smart and head on to Don Quijote today.
This is a Japanese owned company so they sell everything you need for your Japanese New Year setup.
Kadomatsu
Bamboo branches
Chrysanthemum
Kagami mochi and mandarin orange
Black beans
Kazunoko
P.S. Mine is not traditional Japanese Ozoni. It is Iron Chef Japanese Val Y. Ozoni!!! Way better than traditional Japanese Ozoni. I would tell you how much of this and how much of that to put in the Ozoni. I would tell you how much salt and pepper and (or) dashi or if there are secret ingredients that distinguish my Ozoni from all the others....but if I did..I would have to kill all you that read this review.
I'm Buddhist and would not hurt a fly; so each of you must do your own thing when you make Ozoni.
P.P.S. HELLO!! You all better get your butt off your chair after you read this review and do your shopping for what Japanese believe is the most important meal of the year.....NOW!!!
P.P.P.S. Today is 12/30/2011 ...."Rainen mo yoroshiku!"

Busy, dirty and jam packed with all sorts of eclectic goodies that can make a girl squeel with delight while being kind to her wallet. I just come here to stock up on beauty supplies, specialty beauty items that are rare and marvel with lust at the selection of fabulous eyelashes. $1.39 ones that are so fun and addicting. So glad they stock them.

This is an interesting store. You can find almost anything you need; from local food and things, to imports from Asia and more. I usually buy toiletries and things needed for the house there because they have discounts or better deals than in other stores. If you are looking for a store that has a wide variety of things, I definitly recommend this store.

Review from Lianna N.
Considering we live mostly among Asians, it strikes me as strange that we have so few "Asian markets". Basically here, Marukai, Nijiya and Palama Korean market in Honolulu. On the mainland, there are always Asian superstores the size of Costco and full of cheap Asian cookery goods. Not sure why Hawaii doesnt have that, and also closed the other large one (Ranch 99) some time ago.
The prices at Don Quijote are reasonable and the prices are good. It is the biggest Asian grocery store and I can always find what I need here. Parking is easy and staff is helpful enough. I would say it caters mostly to Japanese goods and local goods. Reliable place to shop.Listed in: If I had a week in Oahu

I used to drive 20 minutes to town to shop here, but I recently decided not to go out of my way any longer.
First, the pros: the produce is varied and affordable, and the meat selection is pretty good. And, of course, you have a nice selection of Japanese and other Asian products.
However, I was supremely disappointed when my computer-printed manufacturer's coupons were rejected during a recent visit. The manager said that they do not accept internet coupons due to fraud, however, these coupons come from the manufacturer, have scannable barcodes, and redemption information clearly printed on them. There is no good reason to turn them away other than choosing to be unaccommodating to cost-conscious consumers. There is also no signage to inform customers about this policy, so you are simply humiliated at the cashier when your coupons are rejected.
In today's day and age, manufacturer's coupons are readily and legitimately available online, and I will choose to take my money to businesses that welcome them, or that at least make their policies known upfront. These include places such as Safeway, CVS, Target, etc. There are many options, so I will head there instead. -
Review from Kelly M.
Love this store. Great prices on standard groceries. Excellent selection of local products such as coconut syrup, guava jelly, and Hawaiian sea salt.
Then there are the Asian food stuffs. Use this place to live dangerously - grab a random bag of chips from Japan, or a "soda" or jelly that is neon colored. Great place to pick up so many things: frozen Chinese dumplings (an easy weeknight dinner), sake and canned sardines (found one tin of saba fillets for $2 here and the same can was $7 at Whole Foods!)
Also do Christmas shopping for my mainland relatives here: Hawaii tourist tschotskes, local and foreign foods, alcohol (sake, shochu and Hawaiian produced liquor). -

Honolulu, HI
I am so OG when it comes to this store. Living across the street from it for the past 20 years, I remember when it was called Holiday Mart, Daiei, and now Don Quijote. Though it has changed a lot in the last few years, it's convenience has always remained. They have recently really catered to the Asian crowd, therefore earning it the nickname of the "Asian Walmart". It can get really crowded at times, and the workers may not always be the friendliess, but hey it is open 24 hours and that my friend is a good thing. This location also has a small Post Office and a Central Pacific Bank inside, making for a one stop get your errands done in one crack deal. Even though I am moving away at the start of the new year, I will always frequent this place!

Honolulu, HI
I really enjoy shopping here because they have so much fun stuff. I really hate shopping here also because they have so much fun stuff and I spend so much unnecessary money.
They're open late when you're craving late night munchies or your toilet clogs and need that last minute plunger and there's no place else open. Don Quijote is your place! But you end up probably leaving there spend way more than you expected.
They have it all - alcohol, snacks, produce, car stuff, personal hygiene stuff, everything. The price is pretty decent too. Love this place. My wallet hates it. -
Review from Ronald T.
Honolulu, HI
Pros:
-Amazing selection of Asian products and cheap prices
-Great Asian "deli"
-A number of yummy fast food counters in front of the store
-Convenient (larger selection of goods than most Hawaiian markets)
Cons:
-Always crowded
-Quality of some products are very questionable (especially non-Asian)
-Produce section; bad selection and quality
-Prices on certain American goods (i.e. beauty products, tupperware, soap, etc.)
This is my favorite grocery store! Not without its flaws, but Don Quijote has combined the convenience of a Target or a Walmart with the robust selection of Asian goods one can expect from a 99 Ranch Market (California-reference). Their weakest department is their produce, which is so unfortunate as produce is oh so important! Yet they offer enough for me to visit many times a month.
My favorite items:
natto, yaki soba, fresh fish, ramen, sauces, bentos, cheap canned foods -

This place is crazy. There is nothing like this in Los Angeles so when my husband brought me here i was like, "wow".
It has everything: a food court, a grocery section, bakery, hawaiian trinkets, american beauty products, asian beauty products, american food section, asian food section, a GREAT selection of snacks (i love snacks.. hehe), electronic stuff, i mean everything... there was an ample amount of parking so that was nice.
Happy Shopping! =) -
Review from Leslie P.
This grocery store is a great place to buy chocolates, macademia nuts and other gifts as souvenirs. It is relatively cheap. A box of chocolate covered macademia nuts is $3 or less, where other places will run you at least $4.50, but closer to $5.
I suggest coming here first to find your chocolates especially! Parking is easy and free. There are also several food options outside of Don Quijote. -
Review from Chris M.
I used to dread going to Don Quijote. The busy parking lot, crowds, and congestion in the store would stress me out. That is, until I discovered how to avoid all of this....GO ANYTIME AFTER 8 PM AND DO NOT GO ON TUESDAYS! (senior citizen discount day)
A few of my favorite things at Don Quijote...
+ NATTO...only the *true* Japanese love this!
+ Konbu (~$3 for a small container)
+ Weekly sales on fresh produce
+ Ready-made food discounted later in the evening (hot bentos, sushi, musubis)
+ Open 24 hours!
It's my go-to place for Japanese foods/products, and the prices are much better than at Nijiya Market. Daisukidesu! -

I love coming here, its really like "Asian Wal-Mart" in my perspective. They have nearly everything, and decent liquor selection ;) I dont really like that its always crowded here and hard to find parking. Lots of scary bums hanging around outside and I do not feel safe when I use the restroom.

Review from Andrew C.
A big Asian market with discount prices, free samples and a blue penguin for a mascot, Don Quijote is one of the BEST markets you can go to for all your basic necessities! It's like an Asian Longs/CVS, mixed with a little bit of Costco (they stock up and they have a sampling section!) You can find more than just food here, although the bargain deals on Asian ingredients, snacks and food are probably the stores' highlights.
Don Quijote is actually a Japanese based company with over 160 locations in Japan and 3 stores in Hawaii. It's fair to say if you like Japanese discount stores, this is your place! Of course, they offer local Hawaiian things as well. (Buy all your Hawaiian chocolates here!)
Why is it called Don Quijote you ask? The website states this: "Our company stores were named after the hero in Miguel de Cervantes novel, whose style correspond to ourselves defying unfair restrictions and regularity, bravely and aggressively offering challenges to the conventional retail industry."
It's affordable and convenient. Hit up this market! -

Of all the Asian markets in Honolulu, your go-to place should be Don Quijote! They have every aisle labeled and pretty much all the Asian veggies you would need!

How can I not give this place a 5 star? Open 24 hours- Varieties of Bento's, Cold food, Hot food, Sashimi, Seafood, Drinks, snacks, I mean everything you can think of. And kid you not, they have one of the best musubi selections and most amazing of all the Spicy Tuna Poke- is to die for! SUPER DUPER YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love you Don Quijote! Thanks for making Hawaii one of a kind =) -

Not a bad store. Kinda cluthered, so it makes things difficult to find things.
Parking Wise: Parking outside is packed, but there is a huge parking structure across the street. Handicap parking isn't hard to find.
Sales Items Wise: When things are on sale it can go really cheap, and they usually have a lot in stock to handle the sale. So it pays to check out the ads.

Yep, that's me alright, with the screaming toddler standing in the cart demanding candy, trying to elbow my way through a tight band of aunties all trying to squeeze the Japanese cucumbers that went on sale that Sunday morning. Apples, bananas, Korean pears, persimmons, take your pick. There's always some deal going on and Don Quijote's produce prices and selections are irresistible. That is, if I can pry myself away from their overflowing cosmetic aisles featuring full line of popular brands such as NYX and of course the much coveted Japanese cosmetics and skin care. Sometimes it's the new Japanese brand of mascara versus the cucumber and mostly, the mascara wins. Oh well, next Sunday for sure.

Mililani, HI
Parking sucks like vampires, but once you play "frogger" with the third world cab driver and the older-than-Jesus japanese lady driving a Toyota Avalon you are rewarded with air-conditioning and a store filled with Far East foodie fare.
From blood sausage and $15 canned eel to fresh burdock and $1.50 chiso, Don Quijote has enough overseas variety to fulfill your fetish for Asian food.
Had a rough day at work and need a massage? Don Quijote sells massagers of both primitive and futuristic design, they even used to have a machine that shakes your entire body when you stand on it...a full body vibrator, of sorts ; )
Don Quijote also sells electronics such as portable speakers, 32 inch Sony Bravia 3D LCD TV's, headphones, and rice cookers amongst a thousand other products....The question isn't what does Don Quijote have....it's more like what DON'T they have! Seriously...they're like the Asian version of a Wal-Mart Supercenter, except with better products and no "people of Wal-Mart" (you know the type with food stamps in hand, dressed in clothes 2 sizes too small with her ten kids hanging off the shopping cart).
What's even better is that they have a food court outside, well...more like store fronts but none-the-less a convenience if you found the hot and cold food offered inside doesn't hit your stomach's G-spot (G for Gastronomical, of course. You freak).
So be brave and dodge 3, 000 lb vehicles driven by the most dangerous people on the road and check out Don Quijote for the best selection the East has to offer....who knows....you might develop a little persuasion of the Asian variety (you and your dirty little mind, jeez).

Review from KaThy T.
Thought this place was a Mexican grocery store. Turned out to be a Jap store. They have some pretty cool stuff in there. But what I mainly came for was the alcohol. They had free sake samples and other alcohol samples, which all tasted smooth and good. They also had cheap juice (esp OJ). Of all the places I've been to, there wasn't a place that had cheap juice, until visit this place. This place is more convenient for people who drive a car, not so much with public transportation unless you don't mind lugging a huge load around town.

Good selection of vegetables + fruits + alcohol.
There are Ted's Pie here. Have not seen my Chocolate Haupia.
Nothing wrong with this store but I feel extremely claustrophobia here.
Parking is a challenge, always super crowded. I rather park across the street on the 2nd floor or just walk. Don't go there by car.

I love Don Quijote. They have everything here; produce, seafood, electronics, pharmacy, and a great assortment of asian snacks.
The cashier lines get crazy long sometimes but the secret is to go to the electronics registers, but no produce and only 5 items or less. And also just dont look up at the ceiling or go on Tuesdays (Old people day). -
Review from Curt C.
First of all, is it wrong that every once in a while I still refer to this place as Holiday Mart? This place has gone through so many name changes, but the fact remains, it's a great place to find Japanese food and little imported knick knacks.
This particular Don Quijote is full of tourists and local transplants from Japan which means there is a very eclectic group of shoppers. The products that are sold range from toothpaste to televisions, car fresheners to liquor, some of these products are imported from Japan and some are locally grown. They have so many quirky products imported from Japan you can spend hours just looking at the products and trying to figure out what they are supposed to do. Their prices can be a little bit more expensive than say Target or Walmart, but there is a much different feel here than those "superstores". The food area here is quite impressive where you can buy fresh poke, produce, and bentos that that make on a daily basis. I also think the cost of their Sapporo and Kirin are the cheapest on the island. A 12 pack of bottles is about 10 dollars when it is on special which is surprisingly cheaper than domestic beers.
Would I go back? Yes, Don Quixote is a great time filler at any time of the day as It is open 24/7 meaning you can fulfill some random late night snacks or groceries. -
Review from Brian I.
Honolulu, HI
PRO'S: Cheap, Hakuyosha, HIS Travel, CPB in store branch, Japanese and American goods/food stuff.
CON's: Dirty, Parking is HORRIBLE, Parking lot dangerous and filthy OODLES of creepy people after sundown, lazy security guards, pan handlers in the parking garage, getting run over is a possibility.
Heard a story from a friend who's friend heard that security guards ignored multiple requests from a customer who asked for help in the parking lot because a homeless person threw a bento at them or something. I've never seen a security guard in the parking lot all the times I've been there.
Its really cheap there so just be careful -
Review from Ed L.
When Daiei closed down, I didn't know what to expect. Then Don Quijote happened. A bit surprised about the name of the store when the newspaper ads started to appear and then realized they've taken over the space. So, I was expecting something different, but it was exactly opposite of it. When I went inside, it was like a Shirokiya (Ala Moana), filled with plenty of Japanese influence, along with a produce department like you would find at a typical supermarket. I think they tried to duplicate Wal-Mart with Shirokiya. It has some good results, I think. Its always busy, so that's a plus and it helps the surrounding community. Along with Wal-Mart and Ala Moana Center, it helps keep the community thriving.
But anyway, I don't really come here to shop, unless I need something and am in the area. The parking is always a challenge, but if you wait a while and come early in the morning, then you'll have a spot. Prices are a bit overpriced, but it remains competitive anyway. -

I absolutely adore this place. I've been to the Don Quijote in Japan and the one in Hawaii in a little different.
The one in Don Quijote is stocked from floor to ceiling with merchandise!
I like that I can find a lot of asian cosmetics here along with groceries and random electronics! -
Review from Reina W.
Antioch, CA
Don Quijote has a huge variety of different things: souvenirs, produce, clothing, snacks, prepared food, a bakery area, toys, pet stuff, car stuff, and other miscellaneous stuff/junk.
When we first walked in to the store we thought we were in heaven with the huge selection. I had read so much about the low prices and thought we better grab a couple of carts to push all of our great finds in. After looking at the first few items we were interested in, I realized some of the prices really aren't that great. There ended up being several items we skipped out on because we knew we could get them cheaper elsewhere.
I suppose if convenience is your main concern, picking everything up at Don Quijote is the way to go, but if you have the time and energy to visit other stores, I suggest you hold out on certain items.
One thing I did like about this store is that I found a couple of things that I've never seen anywhere else. I picked up several packs of coconut flavored Twix and a bag of caramel flavored Tootsie pops. I was so excited to see these things because I LOVE buying things that you can't find just anywhere. Hee hee...they make me feel special! :-)
Overall, I would recommend shopping at Don Quijote if you need a convenient one- stop place to fulfill all your needs. I do recommend, however, that you keep an eye on the pricing because not everything is a good deal. -

Oh Don Quijote, if you weren't so conveniently located next to Ala Moana Center and frequented by lots of Asian people(especially hot Japanese females), I'd have no reason to come shopping here!
Unfortunately, despite what I said, I really can't find the motivation to come here unless I'm desperate to find something that I can't get at the other stores on the island. I'm not gonna lie, the parking sucks here & the place has been beat to hell which definitely puts it near the bottom of my list of places to go.
Sadly, a lot of the stuff that I thought I could buy here, I can get elsewhere for cheaper and better quality. I will admit that they have a good variety of quirky Japanese items as well as food stuff so that's a saving grace. They also have a decent selection of sake & shochu(which is my favorite alcohol), so that's another point in their favor too. They also have a kiosk that sells air freshener beads that I use in my car, and also a cell phone shop that specializes in some un-locked phones that you can't find easily at other places on the island too. Other than that though, and the hot Japanese girls that come here, I really don't have a reason to shop here... Maybe if they were to hit on me on the few rare occasions that I come to buy things here, I'd be more motivated to come! =P -

How many times have you been out shopping for a really good an pan and thought to yourself, "man I wish I had a vacuum cleaner, a slinky and a DVD about World War II with Japanese subtitles". I know that happens to me at least 4 times a week. That's what makes Don Quijote so special. I can buy rat poison, plastic tikis, a Wii fit board and butane for the stove before I even get into the store!
In all seriousness, their an pans are pretty freakin amazing. But you have to go early cause they sell out by 5 almost everyday. -

I love Don Qujiote, you can get a lot of Asian goodies here, from snacks to fresh meat to hair products they got all the things they need.
If you are in search of Japanese stuff~ this is the place to be, they have tons of selection of all kinds of stuff, although they are sometimes not organized.
Service: good service, all the staff is very helpful, I always do my grocery here and they would really help you look for the item you need.
Price: $$ could get a bit pricey because all of them are being shipped from Japan so even the smallest snack can cost a lot for what it has to offer.
Parking: it has its own parking lot.
Over all experience is great they and they serve 24/7 -

This is the place to buy your coffee and chocolates to bring back to the office. I got such a good deal on the chocolate covered mac nuts, Royal Kona coffee (Sam Choy's Volcano Roast), tea, and fruit. This place was cheaper than Walmart. I walked in and immediately you see the deals on Hawaiian goods. I stocked up here and saved myself a lot of money from buying the same items at the ABC store at premium prices.
I enjoyed the apples here (New Zealand Pacific Queen apple) which was a sweet and crispy apple. I stocked up on bananas for breakfast/snack at 87 cents a pound. Who can resist the 7D Dried Mangoes $2.99/pack?
We went really early in the morning so parking was not an issue and the check-out was quick. I knew what I was looking for so it was a quick trip. -
Review from Kelly J.
As an amateur cook coming from a highly Asian dense community in CA, I always feel most comfortable in a market that supplies those not well known spices, products and produce that are found mainly in Asian home cooked dishes.
I find my curry powders, mango pudding powder, snacks, frozen stuff, everything Asian! All at reasonable prices. I shopped here most frequently when I lived close to Don Quijote.
Ontop of the food, they sell relatively cheap Japanese products! Toys, stationary, miscellaneous things really. Also love the little food shops out front and the beauty/dvd stores inside.
Parking is kind of terrible during peak crowd times. Just remember there's a parking lot across the street and its shaded! -

I love Don Quijote because of their prices and their sashimi/sushi.
I know their produce is a hit or miss, but when it's a hit, their prices are unbeatable.
My hubby and I just found out they serve chu toro...Mmmm...and its good. even the hamachi toro is winnas. The prices are really good too. For example, for 6 pieces of ahi toro sushi/hamachi toro sushi, its about $7. To me, that is grreeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!! -

TOURIST: If visiting here, don't waste your time to go to Marukai. It's farther from the tourist area, Waikiki, and not as good as this market.
Marukai wants you to pay for their membership card which is not much of a difference in the overall cost of the items. Of course, you can't compare to the ones in California.
