Doms is the place to go for everything out doorsy!  I am a bit of a girly girl so I have needed help with camping stuff and presents for the out doorsy men in my life.  Matt Goodman is the most helpful manager dude!!  He has prevented major melt downs by directing me to tents, informing me of the differences in all the different items I was looking at.  He is very knowledgable with firearms too!!  Brilliant and the best customer service a girl could hope for walking into a place like this!!

Tons of stuff. Disorganized, sometimes messy, but still tons of stuff.  And having lots of stuff is very important, don't get me wrong.  But, unless you get someone like Manager Matt to help you find something, good luck on your quest because much of the other staff is not super knowledgeable or helpful for your average camper/backpacker.

If you belong to the Cast & Blast crowd, then Dom's probably has your gear.  Or if you need work-related clothing or boots, this is the place in the Tri-valley.  It's just not always the place for my interests.  Perhaps more like 3.5 out of 5 stars, but I can't give 'em 4 stars right now.

Looking for the very best in Outdoor Gear??? How about Archery, Firearms, ammunition, hunting gear, camping, and Major Paintball Equipment Supplier . . .

Dom's has been a shopping destination for me for the past 30 years, from the days when they were in a small, cramped building packed from floor to ceiling with surplus stuff . . .

Today, they are in large, comfortable building with their own parking lot . . . HEY, FREE PARKING all you SF people . . . and the best selection of backpacks, biking water backpacks, fanny packs, urban cool gadgets and accessories . . . cold weather gear for skiing, tree planting and hugging . . . like the Swiss Army Brand stuff? It's ALL here . . .

Our last Yosemite camping trip was so very comfortable  . . . thanks to DOM'S . . . check out their website:

Dom's Outdoor Outfitters; they used to be Dom's Surplus and I liked them better when they were.  I too have lived in Livermore for a long time, 27 years and for as long as I had known about Dom's I had been shopping there for my outdoor gear.  Now that they are for the most part a standard outdoor retail shop shuch as REI or Sport Chalet, I find that I don't go there anywhere near as much as I once did.  Being a singular shop, they need to charge a bit more than the big chains, which I understand just fine, however usually this price difference is offset by great service or a selection of very hard to find items, neither of which are present here.  I recently went there to look for a couple of parts for my compound bow, they had no parts, no longer carry bows and had a handful of low quality arrows.  When I asked the staff, they just shook their heads.

They do still offer a small amount of surplus gear, which in all fairness is about all you'll find at today's modern "surplus" stores and is likely why they changed their name.

Selection:
For the backpacker and camper they have a good selection of gear.  The shooting enthusiast should look elsewhere however, they have no archery gear and minimal firearm offerings at a small counter in the back of the shop.  Paintball gear? LOL

Staff:
My last several visits I dealt with young kids that didn't seem to know much and were not familiar with other Livermore shops.

Overall:
Nice to have a local outdoor shop, but I wouldn't advise anyone travel from any distance to get here.  I really used to like this store, unfortunately my last several visits were not very positive.  Three stars because they are local, have been around for a long time and do have a decent selection of camping/outdoor things.

EDIT: I've bumped my stars up from 3 to 4 as I've gone back many times since to see how things are going and of course, to get gear.  All of my experiences over the last 8 months have been positive with regard to the staff and selection of outdoor gear I was looking for.  They do still carry a small amount of surplus gear, though they have definitely moved away from the "surplus store" image and stock and the gun area is still pretty small.  Overall I'd have to say I"m much happier with them then I was previously, with the biggest improvement being the staff; and that makes all the difference in the world.

It's the closest thing you can get to an actual Army Surplus Store these days.
