One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Returned almost a year later to the day, relieved to see they're open and seem to be doing well.
Got a seat at the bar and ordered what I recalled were my favourites: firecracker balls and the crunchy california roll. In hindsight, just order one of those. The combination of flavours is similar enough and the deep-fry became a little overwhelming. Regardless, both are still delicious.
Also ordered the Spicy Hulk and enjoyed it. But it's not going to prompt a craving for me.
Tried the unfiltered saki. Guess I'm just not much of a saki person.
Not cheap, but still recommended. Enjoy!

Wow!! I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada where we are spoiled with a huge selection of excellent… Read more »
really good, really fresh sushi. they've got some pretty original rolls with unique flavor and amazing fish. good service too.
it's a small space, but really charming and not too cramped - get one of the seats looking out the window.
100% Chinese.
Domo and House of NanKing are SO similar.
100% American customers.
People go there because they don't know what the real thing.
Domo FXXXYou very much.
What a pretender!
You can fake it other people but not me.
We had to go to Italian restaurant after this place to fill us up.
What's up with that?
This place is good for small mouth ladies and son gentlemen.
She might have a bf who has a small penis, or he might have a gf who has a small ......, can't say that.
I don't think I have a big one but I have a big mouth & stomach.
I had 9 Nigiri finished within 86 seconds in this place.
It was like Premature Ejaculation for crying out loud!
like I said 100% Chinese.
I can tell that they never been to Japan and had real Sushi yet.
The Shari was about half size of most Japanese Sushi Bar.
And charges same as most Japanese Sushi Bar?
That means that I had pay double for me to satisfy in here.
WHAT A RIP-OFF!
Who taught you to make such a small Nigiri?
As I said that the place is equivalent of the House of Nanking on Columbus.
There is No authentic Chinese people eating at Nanking but Rachel Ray.
What a big mouth & big-head she has!
Jesus Christ!
She knows nothing but 30 minutes TV dinner.
But,
I have to say that this place is very pretty decor.
It's nicely done.
And very clean place so it is safe to go for sushi.
I gotto tell you that the Sushi Chef was a good lookin' Asian dude as Gay-Porn.
But his Nigiri was VERY TINY.
So, if some one ask me about this place, the some one is Non-Japo, I'll recommend.
And,
when I saw the baseball cap assistant got a large tube of QP- mayonnaise out and squeezed right on a Jive Ass Roll, that gross me out, and I said,
"This is it! I won't be back here again."
Mayonnaise and Raw-fish won't go together.
This is a great sushi place for "Gai-Jin".
Like I said,
Just like Nanking on Columbus.
So you know what I mean.
I am Not going back.
Such a waste of money.
Why should I?
I know better places.
We started out with the cucumber sunomono which was nice and refreshing.
We then had the kobe steak roll with asparagus. The meat was so smooth and tasty. We then had the sexy mama which was also very tasty. Each roll came conveniently cut in 8 smaller bites.
We had hamachi belly and trout which were good. The veggie croquette was also very nice.
We had a nice bottle of $10 sake.
All in all a very good meal in hayes valley. It was $65 with tip, otherwise I would have rated it 4 stars.
Chose Domo to avoid a long wait at Sebo. Generally, Domo is ok if you're hungry, craving sushi, and you're not trying to impress that new date you met on Match. This place is more fitting for married couples or relationships where making an impression is no longer a goal.
But back to the food. We ordered
-Firecracker: Good if you think Chipotle is authentic Mexican food and Sarah Palin would make a fine President.
-Chef's Choice Sashimi (Albacore, Maguro, Sake): All pretty good except that the Albacore was fishy. Points off for that.
-Uni: Decent.
-Toro: Decent but I've had better.
-Bonus points for serving dark Japanese beer. I've only seen this at another Japanese spot in Berkeley and it's a nice addition to the usual trifecta offering of Sapporo, Kirin, and Asahi.
Delicious and fresh. The two most important things about sushi.
I loved the fun rolls...esp the spicy hulk and crispy california roll.
Get here early...no reservations, and the locals know what is good.
Pretty solid sushi - good for a quiet night with a friend. I got the sashimi plate and the sashimi was fresh and quite generous in portion. My friend and I read that the firecracker balls were good so we got those but I really didn't love them. They're fried to such a crisp that you can barely tell what you're eating. My friend pointed out that they taste a little like shu mai or pork dumplings and I've gotta admit, I kind of agreed.
Small and unassuming, Domo turns out average sushi. In a town saturated with sushi joints, I feel you have to do something pretty special to warrant a grand review.
I liked the selection of small crudos. You can choose any two for $6 and they are similar to an amuse bouche of fishy goodness. The salmon with caper, onion avocado and olive oil was a great combo of flavors as was the uni with avocado, wasabi, soy and sea salt.
The rolls were the usual you would find at a lot of places and nothing over the top with the nigiri selection.
Damn good sushi, that's what this place is. The bf and I stopped in for dinner the other night; we'd wanted to come here before but the wait was ridiculous. This time we called in and by the time we walked in, there was only a short wait.
We ordered the Domo roll, the Spicy Hulk, Shitake roll, miso & mochi. The mochi was $3 per ball (they don't tell you it's only one ball) so that wasn't worth it, but the rest was fantastic. The Domo roll is warm; I'm pretty sure I've only ever had cold sushi so that was a pleasant surprise. I loved the shitake roll: I love mushrooms and $4 for 6 pieces was fantastic. The Domo roll is on the spicier end for $14 but has great flavor. The Spicy Hulk was very interesting; it was spicy tuna encircled by a slice of cucumber so it had great presentation and tasted far better than any regular spicy tuna roll.
All in all, $50 for a romantic night out is good. Just no mochi next time because it left us with brain freeze.
I heart Domo! Dig the small space, great service, cool sushi chefs, delicious fresh fish, affordably priced, what more could you ask for? Totally loved the small crudo bites. The uni crudo is fantastic, we kept ordering it over and over again. Also loved the spicy tuna, scallop and ankimo crudos. Super delicious. I'm hooked. Will totally be a regular.
I wish there was a Domo in San Jose, but then it wouldn't be special. Went here for dinner before going to a private piano concert in one of those Victorian Houses around the corner. I think we found this place with our iPhone locator thingy. I was so grumpy but my sweet bf suggested I eat something because I turn into an angry monster hahaha! I walked in and fell in love with it. It was a small restaurant. People are basically elbow to elbow, but after a while, it didn't bother me. I love the tea candles, the mirrors, the kitchen, the cooks were Japanese! That was a plus! The place was very romantic at night.
Luckily we got seated right away because after we came in, people were waiting outside to get a table or seats. My boyfriend and I ordered food, which took a while but I didn't mind because I loved the atmosphere. We got a few sushi which I totally forgot the name. I know one was a vegetable tempura sushi, which was warm (so good) and this other spicy sushi (I'll remember the name next time), and we got some hot tea and beer. The food was delicious; my belly digested it and so did my brain (that's why I can't remember it anymore).
The waiter was a busy bee so he was kinda slow. Food was a little pricey. I would love to come back here again for dinner cus it's awesome!
Domo arigato gozaimasu Domo!
Let me tell you, I was skeptical.
Right off the bat, we ordered a large hot sake and there was a small dead spider in one of the cups. But they were so nice about it and gave us an extra free large sake.
A friend took us here, telling us its his favorite sushi spot. I already have my favorite down (Koo) but Domo made quite an impression!
The ambiance is extremely intimate - not great for any group with more than 3 people. Besides, the restaurant itself is super small.
We ordered:
- crudos: uni x ankimo - uni sashimi & ankimo, each on a single spoon. Simple and delicious. We had 2 pairs of this :)
- 2 amaebi: the fried heads were very lightly, LIGHTLY fried. Still very good but I wish they fried it more!
- 2 uni
- 1 sake
- spicy hulk: SO GOOD!! Pretty small "roll" but each bite was super tangy and spicy. Loved the ponzu sauce mix!
- domo roll: satisfying! when you're craving something filling, this hits the spot.
- spider roll: meh, it was okay.
- large, hot sake
Yes, the portions are pretty small.
Yes, the owner's Chinese.
Yes, it's priced a little exorbitantly (due to its location).
Yes, there was a small dead spider in one of our sake cups, but they handled it quite well and we could have probably gotten it comped.
This place was really cute, and the food was pretty good - rolls and sushi. Everything tasted refreshing and delicious, except the spider roll (my bf orders that, not me!) and that other spider, but all in all, I really liked Domo.
The ambiance was perfect (so intimate!) and the food wasn't bad either -- highly recommend the spicy hulk! Prices to portions, it's not the best but hey, what sushi place is cheap!!?
Cute fun atmosphere. Looking out the window seating is nice. Yum yum baby I am a uni lover must get the uni crudos "small spoon" For sat night was in quick n food served fast just the way I like it:) will be back!
Domo is quite a charming little sushi joint that offers a cozy yet intimate atmosphere. It's a relatively small and modern restaurant, able to fit a maximum of 20 or so people. I was helping me friend move last weekend and for his last dinner before he moved we decided to hit up Domo. I really didn't know what to expect, but it wasn't like I was going to say no to soooshi! :)
Between the two of us, we ordered:
- Three bottles of Sake (http://static1.px.yelp...)
- Hamachi and Toro Sashimi (http://static4.px.yelp...)
- Domo Roll (http://static1.px.yelp...)
- Crunchy California Roll (http://static3.px.yelp...)
- Omega Roll (http://static2.px.yelp...)
Hamachi Sashimi (3.5 Stars): Fresh Yellowtail, one of my favorites to order. Not the best I've had, but still quite good and tasty.
Toro Sashimi (5 Stars): My other favorite, the Fatty Tuna that was extremely stimulating and scrumptious. When I devoured the first piece I instantly fell in love. It seriously just melted in my mouth. One of the best sashimis I've had in quite a while. I highly recommend this for any sashimi lovers out there!
Crunchy California Roll (5 Stars): Tempura Battered California Roll with spicy mayo, unagi sauce, scallions, & tobiko. Out of the three rolls we had, this was my favorite. Again, I am a sucker for fried rolls, so I am a bit biased. The crunchy tempura layer is what does it for me, so exceptional!
Domo Roll (4.5 Stars): Baked California Roll topped with salmon & scallops with spicy mayo, unagi sauce, and tobiko & scallions. This roll was a close second in terms of what I liked between the three rolls we ordered. Full of flavor and packs quite a tasty punch!
Omega Roll (4 Stars): This was on their special menu written on the mirror. Our waitress informed us the specials rolls and what they contained, and I didn't catch everything she said. I do remember it having shrimp, mango, and macadamia nuts. This roll was quite refreshing and luscious.
Sake - Cream de Sake (5 Stars): This is my first experience of having unfiltered sake and my only question is, why have I never had this before? OMG, it was so good! It looks real creamy and milky like, and tasted so smooth and sweet. I think I will start ordering unfiltered sake from now on! :)
Summary (5 Stars): A true hidden gem! They have Toro Sashimi to die for, as well as highly addictive and delicious rolls. It all goes so well with their Cream de Sake! I also enjoyed the soft mellow hip hop beats in the background, so faint that my friend didn't even notice.
Firecracker balls. That's all I need to say, really. They're amazing, despite that they probably contain a billion calories. If you're normally a healthy eater and you're having a weekly treat meal, you must do yourself a favor and eat the balls!
Also, our server was extremely knowledgeable about the specials, the sake, everything. She was kind, and she wasn't obnoxious like when the server comes to check on you so much that you can't even carry a conversation with your friends.
This place is small, so if you're uber hungry I might suggest going elsewhere. We had to wait only about ten minutes, but as we sat eating our meal, we noticed several people waited quite a long time to get seated. I'm definitely returning to Domo. It was outstanding, and I couldn't be more satisfied.
This review is for lunch only
I wasn't that impressed with my lunch experience, given the rave reviews. We shared an ebi shrimp roll which tasted just fine, but was nothing out of the ordinary. Shrimp that was batter fried with some avocado, rolled with sushi rice and dotted with teriyaki sauce. Nothing to call home about. I ordered the sashimi salad lunch special, and since it was technically a salad, they didn't bother to bring out a side salad to accompany my meal, which my friend commented on. While the few sashimi pieces looked to be good quality and tasted fresh, the salad was unimpressive. A small heap of square cut green lettuce with a smattering of seaweed, topped with a gingery-soy sauce and carrot salad dressing. It was refreshing and light, but I've thrown together a better sashimi salad at home. If I check it out again, I'll clearly have to order something else.
Other than that, the service was nice and friendly, and it gave me an opportunity to stroll around in Hayes Valley which I don't often do.
Monday night around 7 and it wasn't too crowded. Got an Orion (actually imported from Japan, unlike Sapporo which is from Canada), Rock N Roll, Fire Cracker Balls, and some salmon/avo/lemon rolls. All were done well, and I thought price was fair. Firecracker thing was good, but definitely pushing the notion of sushi. You basically can't tell any fish is inside. Bathroom was very clean and had good quality paper towels and a nice sink.
Authentic Japanese with a twist of modern flair. Domo, has now become my favorite sushi place. They offer sushi rolls made perfectly, with slivers of fresh sashimi, perfectly balanced rice, well put together. The ratio of rice to fish is equal...none of that fill you up with big riceballs business. Sake was smooth and warmed the gullet. Prices here are shockingly decent for exceptional sushi.
The restaurant is very tiny, we ended up sitting outside. It was very cutesy and relaxing. Although, I must recommend heat lamps. Spend the money Domo! its well worth it.
The good reviews is what tempted me to try this place; However, my experience was terrible!! The chef is not open to suggestions or changes to the menu. The service was terrible- our waiter did not bring us any plates, chopsticks, or menus for at least 10 minutes - we had to wave him down. Then when i asked to add avo to my roll the chef and waiter were not pleased. They charged me an extra $2 dollars. I may give this place another try, but not anytime soon.
Great for Bento lunch. not more, not less.
Lovely outdoor eve and appetizer selection. The stop in was mostly a Sake field trip, so i'll need to sample more fish to rate accordingly (though presnet company exclaimed its fab-u-louso). i enjoyed the Tuna Takaki appetizer (mouth-meltin'). Wasabi peas were as imagined, but they did warm them: nice touch. Service good, Sake yum-o, Outdoor seating all prime. Overall i'd say its wet my whistle for upcoming excursion... and my appreciate for the rare SF night when sitting al fresco is where its at.
FIRE CRACKER BALLS. Think about the goodness that those three little words could implicate and throw that into delicious sushi popcorn bites. YUUUUM! They're not tiny, but their small enough where you don't have to look like a hamster while munching on them. And, don't worry - you get more than 6 pieces. The presentation and sauce are perfection on a platter. This is the only thing I had cuz my friends only wanted 1 roll to themselves, and I didn't wanna seem like a fatty and order more, but I'd DEFINITELY come back to try the others rolls.
1 less star for the following reasons:
The place is small - all seating is bar-style, so don't come w/ a large group. Parking looks like a nightmare - but we walked over from our office. What we ended up shelling out was a bit more than I care to spend for lunch, but it was a special occasion.
The staff seemed cool... quiet. One of them referred us to the Mediterranean corner market down the street for some delicious ice cream for dessert. All in all, good experience, and I'm definitely coming back for 2nds... 3rds... you get the picture.
Have been to Domo several times now and it is by far our favorite sushi spot in the city!
In fact it is OUR special Friday night dinner spot!
Must Haves:
Hulk Roll - spicy tuna wrapped in cucumber instead of seaweed delicious!
Sexy Mama - salmon and asparagus with a razor thin slice of lemon really fresh and surprising!
Jalepeno Hamachi - nice little crunch and heat!
Also they offer reasonably priced beer and sake
Hidden gem well worth the reasonable prices!!!!!
Took a friend there for her birthday - we enjoyed it immensely. Service was good, even if we were talking too much to have anything selected the first time the server asked. Food is yummy, and good portion sizes except for the nigiri (there is only one place I can justify nigiri - w********e).
Nice sake list, great ambiance. We got there early, so no wait but I know that the wait after we left was kinda long (and it was a Sunday).
More negatives than positives for Domo ...
We sat at the bar and watched the chef in action. I'd have to say that he was very chintzy on the portions. The uni nigiri we ordered was unfortunately the worst I've ever had. I saw him spoon up the liquid scraps of sea urchin, place it into the small seaweed opening, and called it done. For $6.95, I could have bought a whole super burrito. Come on ... give us a real piece of uni!!! The albacore tuna nigiri was also dollhouse size, miniature (looking at the posted images ... our portions were no where near what is shown).
To add, it was pathetic how they, a Japanese restaurant, could run out of hot sake. Before our eyes, the waitress tipped the cardboard box sideways and squeezed out the last sake droplets.
A positive was the restaurant's simple format allowing for a warm, and cozy ambiance. Although, I'm on the fence with liking the bar stool seating, and literally being elbow to elbow with other patrons. Another positive was the Spicy Hulk roll - very nicely done, great, refreshing texture and flavor.
I've been coming here for lunch on a Friday afternoon for a couple of weeks now and am very favourably impressed.
The lunch deal is amazing value, with a good order of sushi for $12 and $5 big bottles of Sapporo. The saba is also excellent and service is polite and fast.
If I was coming in the evening I'd get there early because it's a small bar, with around 15 seats inside in a bar format and a couple of tables outside. But it is worth it - this place cares about its sushi and it shows.
Lunch at Domo is a very pleasant. The fish is fresh, the ambiance is nice and it's wonderful to be in Hayes Valley. The Chirashi is bountiful and presented beautifully. I love it that we live so close by to such a find.
But I must warn you, don't EVER order take out. It's a supreme ripoff and everything good about Domo goes out the door. The portions are noticeably smaller and the prices are somehow higher and they don't apologize about it. If you have to order Japanese takeout let me recommend Mikado in Potrero Hill. I think they deliver also.
Loved the crudos. Nigiri tasted really fresh, as did the raw rolls. I wasn't so down with the signature roll (Domo), which was baked with a very sweet teriyaki style sauce. Lots of interesting looking rolls on the menu to come back for, including one with American Kobe beef. The restaurant is almost completely bar seating and thus probably better for singles and groups of two.
Tiny intimate sushi joint that has a nice feel to it. It's most bar seating unless you are willing to sit outside (1 inside table for 2). Intimate.
The sushi was good. This is really a "roll" place. The nigiri was really mediocre or even worse bad. I always tend to get some hamachi, sake, and seared ahi nigiri. The ahi was the best nigiri I tried there. The Hamachi carpaccio was the bomb. The crudos were also quite nice, particularly the uni if that is your thing. The famous firecracker is a great blast of flavor that is a must, at least for 1st timers. I wouldn't order it again though. The flavors are bit too familiar.
The sequence in which we received everything was totally wrong. All the most flavorful items came first so we had to do a lot of palate cleansing. I'm sure the rest of the rolls are also good. There is a little too many spicy tuna type combo rolls for me though.
I don't think we will come back. I would though recommend this place a friend to try out. Maybe come back for that carpaccio. I suspect that the quality of their fish is just OK, judging from the nigiri. Overall good food, not great. Lots of others places to try in the city by the bay.
In any case, it was a great evening.
I just returned from Domo after my second visit. Definitely a sushi place that prides itself and knowing its fare and keeping their customer happy. They are driven to please you, whatever you want, you can have...but some say otherwise. So I'm not sure how open they are to suggestions (what you don't like, or; what you do like) and having them create something special for you. However, the service is always great, the atmosphere is serene for a date or with a couple friends (this place is TINY, so not good for more than 2 people).
Kua and the guys at Domo take already great food and make it fun, and isn't that the point of eating out?
I really can't say enough about this place. Seriously. The food is ridiculously tasty, well-proportioned, reasonably priced and created by guys who put everything they've got into everything their knife touches. You can see AND taste it.
My fave is the "uni-in-a-spoon". Of course that's not what they call it but after eating about a thousand of them I think I'm entitled to a little poetic license. (Disclaimer: Don't eat the spoon.)
They serve nice big chunks of sashimi and you can taste the quality; two things that are unfortunately scarce at other snobby or cheap restaurants.
The relatively new outdoor sidewalk seating makes a warm evening in SF just about as good as anything can get and the staff is.... awesome. I've been there on super packed nights and they still treat you like the place is empty and you've got all the time in the world to ask questions about the menu to find the perfect thing.
One thing I'm a fan of is just asking them to surprise me. When you see Kua behind the bar bust out a torch and a grin you know you're in for a treat.
I seriously can't say enough about this place.
I'll start with the good things and then work my way down.
*Nice cozy place and atmosphere in a hood surrounded by other cozy restaurants.
*I thought the service was good and attentive. The waitress said they were running out of hot sake but managed to squeeze out two bottles out of the box for us.
*The Spicy Hulk was actually spicy, cool, and refreshing...our favorite of the night.
The specials scribbled on the mirror were hard to read...we constantly had to bobble our heads in order to see what was up. One of the specials was the Fresh Ikura so we asked for it.
"We're out of it." Ok, how about the not-so-fresh ikura?
"We're out of that too."
Okey, on to the others: uni (sissy portions), the uni/monkfish liver sushi crudo combo (more sissy portions), seared albacore nigiri (came to us non-seared, equally sissy), and the $14 sashimi salad (We got what looked like one expensive head of lettuce compared to the amount of sashimi in it, and the dressing was bland). The way they hold back on the portions I was surprised they would be out of anything...from my experience most Chinese-owned sushi shops are rather generous with their portions but this joint plays this neighborhood.
$.02
I have to admit, I was pretty messed up. It was a thursday. It had been a long, long week. I was in class 8 hours a day, and that particular day, I'd been in class for 9 hours. There was just no end in sight. There was no stopping the relentless beating that accompanied my chosen path. And to top it all off, my BF was having an anti-going-out-to-eat phase. I hate it when he does that.
In a daze, I somehow stumbled off the bus at the requisite stop. I wandered down Laguna looking for the same blue and white scheme as on Domo's website. Well, don't because that's not what's out front. It's a tiny red neon sign in slightly psycho-killer handwriting "domo." Inside, it was lines with high, bar-bistro height seating, at the sushi bar and then wrapped around the perimeter. In one cozy corner was an equally high bistro-height table with some chairs.
I looked at the menu. I looked for a server. I shyly asked if they did takeout. The guy looks at me, I look at him. We had an understanding. A spark. I order the hamachi, the uni, amaebi, sake, and the ankimo appetizer (very good value). It was about a tray's worth. It included the fried shrimp heads. and it cost $33. I scarfed that tray down and nearly licked the grooved plastic.
On the taste and freshness:
Freshness - not bad. Nothing suspicious or smelly about it. The things were tender. The hamachi was a strange color though, it looked more like kampachi and not hamachi. It was not as fragrant as hamachi usually is. I'll let this one slide and say that the sushi chef misunderstood.
Taste - also not bad. Not as fragrant as it could possibly be. The uni, while not offensive, did not have that sweet, briny, ocean taste. Usually, uni makes my heart sing and my spirit fly. This time, my heart merely whistled "Dixie" and my spirit leaned over the edge of the Titanic.
Portions were smallish. The rice was small (but I like that), however, the fish was not as mouth-full-of-feel as I would have liked it. The setting was really cute, but I get more satisfaction from sushi boat.
Nothing super fancy. The sushi is OK. For the price you pay, you could get better sushi down the street at Otoro.
I'm not entirely sure how I managed not to eat here before last night, but what a delight. The sushi is inventive, plentiful, delicious and service is quick. I can't believe how many times I have walked around Hayes Valley wanting sushi and not realizing this little dream was there.
This place is quite dainty and is pretty much like the small spots in Japan. Although its Taiwanese owned, they make authentic sushi.
Location
I recommend getting there early as it does not seat many and you may get caught up in a line to get in. Parking will be a challenge but its worth it.
Food
The sushi are the right size and not like other places where they make these ginormous rolls that you can barely take with one bite. I grew up in Japan and it was a nice and refreshing to get great sushi that resemble what I ate when I was in Japan. The fish is fresh and very flavorful.
Ambiance
As mentioned above its quite dainty, but you get an intimate experience. There's one table and rest of the seat is on a counter that wraps around to the sushi bar. They write their daily specials on this black board in neon pen so make sure to take a moment to check out it out.
Service
The Sushi chefs are fun and great to converse with, like any sushi place don't forget to offer then some sake and beer! There is a waiter if your are unlucky to get a seat at the small sushi bar, but he's a cool kid as well.
Where else can you get 8 pieces of sashimi for $12? It is also some of the best sashimi I've had in the city.
Definitely my go-to sushi place. Great, creative rolls. They pay attention to quality (and therefore they do not have 50 different rolls of various combinations of the same 3 types of fish). Sake selection is minimal but a "glass" is more like a "small jug" and thus well worth your purchase price. Highly recommend the fish tacos, fire cracker balls, and pretty much whatever they have on special. Small space so not the best place for big parties. Just bar seating and one high-top table that will seat 4.
I originally had plans to go to Sobu, but after reading some reviews on Yelp which mentioned Domo, I decided to check this place out instead. The place is very small, but you don't feel cramped. We got there at 7 on a weeknight and there was already a waitlist, but the server came out while we were waiting outside and offered to take a drink order which made the wait go by a little bit faster. We ended up being seated at the bar, and I swear that the sushi chef has got to be the fastest, most efficient chef I have ever seen. He never even broke a sweat and the food came out quickly which was great because we were starving! The staff was super friendly, and I really liked the lighting there which was not too bright.
We order the firecracker balls, which were tasty, but I really enjoyed the nigiri sushi. Everything we ordered tasted really fresh. The entire dining experience was very pleasant and cozy. I am looking forward to coming back here.
Firecracker balls continue to deliver. The crunchy spicy tuna roll was also noteworthy and large (a good value). The tasmanian trout was awesome. It looked like salmon but was more flavorful and less fishy.
I wish they had more than 1 sake available for less than $40/bottle.

A different kind of place than Sebo around the corner. Domo is small with only counter seating and… Read more »
I prefer izakaya and cooked foods over sushi-only, but I was over at TrueSake on Hayes stocking up on a Sunday afternoon back in Jan/2009. Domo was a short walking distance around the corner and the earliest to open so I popped in with a fresh bottle of Wakatake Onikoroshi daiginjo. I was actually 15 minutes early from opening time, but they told me to go ahead and come on in - my kind of place. I thought both the nigiri and sashimi servings were very fresh and satisfying. I rarely order rolls and can't comment on these since I didn't order any.
For San Francisco the price relative to the quality was surprising i.e. a good value, less expensive than I would have normally expected. I sat at the bar and found both the owner and staff to be polite and friendly. They made me feel comfortable and good conversations ensued. The service was prompt and efficient.
I would definitely come back when in the area and wanting sushi. I'd like to see some izakaya items added to the menu. Several items were close; the fish tacos and asparagus wrapped in kobe beef, then flame seared with a hand held torch. I don't have any complaints or dissatisfactions.
