Review Highlights
i'm writing this as a review of dominie's as a weekend BRUNCH spot rather than as a bar. warning: i'm a regular, and i LOVE this place
my boyfriend and i are here practically every weekend for brunch. it's been almost a year now and we're still haven't gotten sick of their excellent eggs benedict.
the brunch deal is great! for $8 you get: 2 eggs benedict with ham on a split english muffin, crispy fries with an addictive chipotle mayo, coffee AND your choice of mimosa or bloody mary. basically, ANY entree on the menu comes with free coffee & mimosa/mary during brunch. their burgers and chicken sandwiches are tasty and i enjoyed the steak & eggs special, but i always go back to their plain eggs benedict.
be patient with their very friendly staff! on weekends, it's usually just one person doing all the serving, busing, and drink making. there's always a bit of a wait to get your food, but entertain yourself with the many board games on their shelves. challenge the table next to you to a round of trivial pursuit!
i love that i've found a great neighborhood place for my weekend routine. very comfortable, casual, and always plays great music!
JENN--WE MISS YOU!
Unsafe, sleazy, and poor atmosphere. I wouldn't feel comfortable visiting without the boyfriend in tow. Additionally, it looks like the bar owner is abusive toward his neighbors, as mentioned in this story on HBNYC
http://hollabacknyc.bl.../
Not the type of establishment I support.
the good: very chill. Bartender attended to me but wasn't in my way. Ten dollar plates.
the bad: sad beer options. The place felt dirty. This will sound subjective and unfair but at the time of my visit the patrons weren't just unattractive, they were remarkably and uncomfortably ugly, as if it was casting night for extras in Pirates of the Carribean.
The name drew me in, thinking I'd find at least a Belgian brew. Oh no. Oh no no no.
This is a really cool, unpretentious neighborhood bar - I've been here a couple of times and really like it. The atmosphere is nice, service is friendly, and they have reasonably priced bar food, including a weekend brunch that I'm planning to try sometime.
The atmosphere is loft like, airy, and serene. I love their patio in the back, which is a great place to have some cold beer and snacks on a hot day.
Their drink prices are really reasonable and they have Blue Moon on tap, which I love.
I had the charcuterie plate with my beer today, which was plentiful and tasty, but not gourmet or anything. Still, it was reasonably priced and a nice complement to my beer.
I'll update my review once I've tried the brunch, but otherwise I highly recommend this place for drinks post-Water Taxi or for a chill afternoon drink.
A pleasant little 'ol refreshment stop, if you've been wandering around the nether regions of Long Island City and it's 87 degrees outside.
There were some tortured, German Expressionist-y paintings on the walls, that I personally enjoyed, but that might not necessarily be endorsed by 4 out of 5 art critics for their readers who look at painting.
Out in back there's a patio, and we sat nearby a happy combination of folks playing Trivial Pursuit (we avoiding the temptation to shout out what would have invariably been the wrong answers).
And we drank Stella Artois and Guinness, not necessarily in that order.
This is a great spot. Close to the 7 train, Yuengling Porter for 3.50, and a pretty tasty menu. I imagine the outdoor area is lovely in the summertime as well.
The bartender was very attentive and helpful and everything, too.
Excellent jukebox, too - I can't remember the last time I heard an old Sonic Youth song in a bar in Queens.
Tucked in the middle of the the "easy commute" section of LIC, Hoek seeks to be an easygoing neighborhood pub with an unpretentious atmosphere and in that regard it succeeds. You can tell the people who work there are really aiming to create a super-chill environment. The bar is sparsely decorated so it doesn't lend itself to being a particularly cozy environment though; which I like in my watering holes.
The food menu is fairly standard. Nothing really stuck out, but they do have a nice cheese plate if you want to feel a bit fancy when drinking your beer. Stick with the pub food and you can't go wrong.
The bartender the night I went was serving both behind the bar as well as waiting tables in the front and the back garden. I tipped him well since he looked busy as hell but was still on top of our orders.
After my blood-pressure-rising meal at the Waterfront Crab House, we met up with some friends at this bar and everything was right with the world. It's big: the ceilings are huge, the bar is long and there is a giant backyard patio. It's cheap: two-dollar PBR's, cheap mixed drinks (well) and they even have Magner's!
The atmosphere is really laid back and the crowd was calm. The music wasn't too loud and they were playing good stuff (the Strokes, Albert Hammond, New Pornographers). The bartender was a cool guy too.
My one beef with the place was that the music didn't extend out onto the patio. But that was okay. I guess my only legitimate complaint was that I had to leave. I'll totally go back and day and time. They supposedly have brunch which I didn't notice, but I'd be up for trying that too.
Great place.
Very chill, laid back atmosphere in this cozy bar. Great on a budget, but also have good draft beers and great sangria. Young, hip crowd and great art on the walls.
The menu is a little limited, but the food is consistently good. Live music on the weekend is always interesting, because you never know quite what you'll get....banjos, mandolin, etc. Friendly and attentive staff.
If you are ever in the neighborhood for the Marathon, there is a group that regularly stop in the bar for their beer in Queens. The group runs the marathon and stops along the way to have a beer in each borough. Ran into them last fall, and apparently they've been stopping at the Hoek for a few years now.
This is a great treasure tucked into Long Island City and as Victor L said it is close to LIC bar, another great place in this neighborhood. I was really impressed with the nice decor (classy but not too much to make it obnoxious) and as you know if you read my reviews I point out historical items in bars and food joints. Dominie's Hoek features old pictures and drawings of Long Island City in the bathroom (which seemed well maintained.)
The drink selection was good and very cheap. You can get a can of PBR here for 2 dollars. That's cheaper than pretty much any bar I've been in as it seems to usually be about 3 bucks anywhere else including the cheaper Brooklyn locations.
This place among others down Vernon Boulevard has proven to me I never need to leave Queens again to have a great time. Really fun and cool place to have a drink. Oh, and not only is the inside nice but they have a decked area in the back for outdoor drinking!
This was about to get a 4 star review, but then we went to LIC bar and it got one upped. Not to take away from this place, it's really quite the chill place, and around this area, it's nice to have a couple bars to choose from, all chill, all nightcap heavy, and very quiet and relaxed.
It's brightly lit from the outside, and you walk into what looks like a non-broseph dude bar. But it's just wonderfully quiet, literally I felt humane walking in here and getting a drink, it's one of the most serene alcohol-serving places ever. This was a Saturday night at 11:20pm. Andrew J, Chelsea J, Eric S., Steph V., me, our friend Jess, and just a round or two of recounting stories and spouting off Maid In Manhattan references. It's really a bar to calmly drink and think about how your next day is going to be.
I really like the decor, it's not overbearing but it's got a slightly rustic feel to it, almost elegant. Two unisex bathrooms before you hit the small but very clean back patio area, where there were a couple of couples, and a couple of 4-sets of older middle class types.
The bartender was the only staff member in the place, and he was very nice, collecting and asking if we needed anything in the back consistently. The beer here isn't beyond typical, but they have the PBR option for those in a bind.
Now I wouldn't mind coming back here for what seems to be a brunch special. Just because of the atmosphere.
Based on the other yelp reviews, I chose this place to meet 7 of my friends for a birthday drink on a Wednesday night. It's a very laid back place, nice atmosphere. It was smaller than I thought it would be but it didn't matter because there was room for all of us to sit at a table indoors (too rainy to go outside but the back yard looked very nice).
The food was nothing special but it was fine for bar food. We ordered the guacamole and chips, a taco and a few veggie burgers and regular burgers.
I thought the sangria tasted more like juice than sangria. Switched to draft beer after that.
Had a great time and also like the fact that it was a convenient middle ground for my friends who live in Queens and Brooklyn and a few work in Manhattan.
Stopped in after having dinner at Riverview. This bar is laid back and cozy, not to mention that the drinks were reasonable.
I drank a Pabst Blue Ribbon (OK, even though I am a beer aficionado, I'll take a Pabst over Budweiser) with a shot of Powers, the total for the two drinks came to about 6 bucks, then I went for another Pabst without the shot and that was only 2 bucks.
There was a band that was setting up in the back but I didn't stick around to hear them play, but from what I gather I think they were a bluegrass type band. One guy had a banjo, another one played an acoustic guitar, the third guy had an upright bass and the fourth guy was the singer.
This bar is worth stopping in for a drink on your way to or from someplace.
Spoke with the bartender regarding the name of the place and she said it was Dutch for "Preacher's Corner." I thought it had something to do with the Catholic Church that was located up the block but she said that it didn't, that the neighborhood was rich in history regarding religion back in the day. They do serve food there but I didn't eat anything
Dominie's Hoek on Vernon Blvd.is a place that all Astorians and Long Island City people alike have to check out.
The atmosphere is relaxing yet a young upbeat crowd that supports local musicians and atists alike.
When the weather is warm that back deck is a great place to chill with your friends,a drink & some of the amazing food from Dominies menu & there is some of the best sangria around.
Great place for a beer. Nice backyard in summer. Not as crowded or trendy as some places in the neighborhood (this is a plus!)
The staff are really cool, nice, not snooty. Good selection of beer and nice sangria in summer (white and red). Happy Hour! :-)
The food? Eh. It's okay. You won't get sick. If you're drinking, it will keep you balanced. But it is not wonderful, even for bar food.
I have only had hot dogs and a burrito so I suppose not much to go on. But the steak burrito was very plain -- seemed like it contained no beans or veggies or flavor. Bland.
This place has got that intimate, laid-back coolness to it. The bartender looks like a mix between David Cook and the Undertaker with his enlarged forehead and dangly hair. When I stepped in they had the Palin-Biden debate on a tiny tele - signs telling of a crowd that's in the know of worldly things yet still hip to the core with their local artists' paintings that decore the wall, and small cozy outdoor backyard - good for small private parties. Place has got grill menu as well. Live music as well. Plus karaoke on certain nights. Laid back enough to be reading your favorite book undisturbed, intimate like you're at a small family reunion dinner party at grandma's log cabin. Romantic bar, romantic neighborhoody.
I like this place. Nice garden to chill in and drink a Vodka or Yuengling. Music is OK. Tons of rock and some BS indie rock, but not typical crap like most places. The only downside is the occasional group of meathead idiots that get trashed in there and breathe my air...
I really, really enjoyed coming here. This is not a huge, sprawling space, yet the bar has an open and airy feel while still maintaing an intimate vibe. Painted silver ceilings, candles, traditional bar stools and Christmas lights set the tone here. There's a small outdoor area with wrought-iron furniture, more Christmas lights and umbrellas. It was so much fun to sit outside with my drink and just soak up the night.
It wasn't terribly crowded in here and there was definitely a nice crowd and overall upbeat presence. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Not to mention, cheap drinks! $2 PBRs and a friend bought me a mixed drink and a soda for herself and the grand total was $6. My lady-friend and I commented several times throughout the night that this place has a very nice, calming vibe. I definitely want to come out here again, and again.
And, to add another perk, the bar also has some brunch specials. Another thing to check out next time, only during the day.
This is officially my favorite bar in NYC. Everyone there is extremely nice. They do not take the cheers claim lightly at all. Awesome music. Awesome burger, fries, and hot dog. Chillaxing patio, intriguing art, the sweetest bartenders in the land, and a steady flow of quality comics to shoot the shit with out back. I don't miss a lot about NY, but I do miss this place.
With big tin ceilings, dark wood paneling, white Christmas lights, and an outdoor patio, Dominie's Hoek feels a little bit more like Asheville (or, according to what I've heard, Savannah or Austin) than you'd expect to find in Long Island City, and it's a pleasant surprise. Well-priced drinks, enough of a beer variety, attentive bartender, and plenty of space out back to sit with a group of friends and chill out. This is completely my kind of bar, and I was glad to have found it. I'll have to try it out for brunch!
Although I'm not sure they have shows regularly, I caught some friends on the road here. For a small bar, this place actually sounds ok. No cover and $2 PBRs sweetened the deal.
After a visit to the Noguchi Museum, we took a long walk over to the "trendy part" of Long Island City and ended up at this restaurant, listed in LongIsCity, a guide to Arts and Culture in Long Island City. It was an early Sunday afternoon, so they were serving brunch. We got started off right with free mimosas and bloody marys (spiced up, according to preference). My fiance reported the bloody mary to be pretty good, though it tasted like shrimp cocktail to me. My mimosa was pretty strong and had a hint of grapefruit in it. The service was pretty good considering there was only one bartender/waiter on duty and he was serving several tables. We sat in the small garden in the back, with big tables. With our group of 7, we only had to steal one chair from another table. The brunch menu has the standard omlette and eggs benedict, along with calamari, two different kinds of shrimp (cornmeal and chili-lime(?)), mussels, and some sandwiches (steak, burger, chicken, veggie burger). I ordered a chicken sandwich with fontina cheese, avocado (there's bacon on it as well but I ordered it without) and chipotle mayo. It was served with french fries, nothing spectatular but pretty good. The chicken sandwich was pretty good and tasted fresh. The prices were not bad...the sandwich was ten dollars, the rest of the menu ranged from 8 dollars to 12 dollars.
The bar seemed pretty cool. The board out front said they have open mics on Wednesday nights and happy hour specials during the week. If I lived in this neighborhood, I'd probably want to hang out here a lot.
The server was great, superfriendly and called us a car when we ended up back in front of the restaurant after a walk around the neighborhood.
Great bar. I've never been for brunch but have been for drinks a few times. They have a nice outdoor patio, good beer selection that is pretty cheap, and the bartenders have all been nice. It's perfect place for the summer to sit outside at night and have a beer and a cig. Also, it's never been overly crowded when I've gone. If it was closer to my house I'd be here all the time!
Dominie's Hoek is a cozy little joint on Vernon Boulevard. Nice staff. Nice locals. Nice drinks. I've never been on a Monday, but I hear Monday is metal night. The Wednesday open-mic is something of a rarity in New York City -- the people who play are more concerned with having a good time and making beautiful music, than with making a name for themselves in the big city.
