I was pleasantly surprised by Dominican Joe's. I was concerned that the Free Trade "schtick" would detract from the quality of the coffee.

Fresh, well-roasted beans:  Check
Quality espresso shot pull with crema and deep flavors: Check
Velvet smooth steamed milk: Check
Barista skill (good tamp, latte 'art' leaf): Check

Dominican Joe's doesn't threaten Cafe Medici for best coffee in town, but the drinks are in the upper echelon. The shop also looked like a great place to hang out or work with tons of seating.

I'll be adding this shop to my espresso rotation.

I may have missed the point here. If you want to drive a car to meet someone for a nice cup of tea, this place may be half way decent. If you want to cycle or walk up, it's all the way decent.

In other words, parking is tight, though you are close in.

They had a good choice of tasty green tea, they had locally made snacks and the tables were not too small. All in all, not bad.

I am a self proclaimed coffee house junkie...a rough morning, terrible day, dreamy evening, or slow afternoon all make me want to go hang out at a coffee shop.

Dominican Joe is the one coffee shop that when I go there--I get coffee. Their coffee is AMAZING--it's hard to describe the flavor. It almost has a minty aftertaste? I have started buying their coffee by the pound (perk-you get a free cup of coffee when you buy a pound!) and now exclusively drink that coffee at home. I'm still trying to get my new coffee pot to brew it just right.

What it boils down to is that everywhere else I go, I get a high maintenance 2 pump skinny hazelnut latte, but the second I walk into DoJo, all I want is a coffee. A little bit of half n half and one packet of splenda--this stuff sends my morning into full throttle greatness!

The morning staff could use a bit of a pep talk sometimes, but--no fault there. I can too (that's usually why I'm at DoJo to begin with). I've had some of the nicest line conversations with other patrons, and love it when I have a few minutes to sit down and relax before jetting off to work. I've also been to a few of the evening events that they have hosted. The atmosphere is always jovial and pleasant--if it gets too noisy, the patio is a great alternative.

AND my affinity for Taste No Evil Muffin Company--started here! DoJo sells freshly baked muffins straight from the muffin mecca from their case of treats. mmmm. and they are barely (if at all) marked up. YAY!

Also really cool is their partnership with Makarios and the way they are directly pouring back into the community and people growing the coffee beans. Drink coffee--change the world. What a cool slogan! Yes please, sign me up.

I've always loved this place. Ever since I've moved to Austin. Strangely enough, I'm not huge on coffee, which I hear they excel at. Their other teas, mixed juice drinks and the like, though, are superb. The environment is very conducive to studying, and not loud like Starbuck's. They have live music on Saturday nights(?) sometimes, and some homemade desserts. Love it.

Seriously, this is the perfect coffee house hang-out for someone like me.  Meaning, it's not swarming with knuckle-dragging monosyllabic frat boys, deprived of opposable thumbs and pronounced cranial ridges...  The patio seating is EXACTLY what I dig...  Think really (really) old-school Spiderhouse Coffee, before the frat boys infested that once magical locale.  Nevertheless, awesome coffee (their brew is noteworthy), perfect ambiance, and free WiFi.  For what more can you ask in a coffeehouse?

Was walking down South Congress with my friend A and we noticed Dominican Joe tucked back just off the intersection of S. Congress and Riverside. We walked in to a relaxed atmosphere full of a twenty to thirty-something set clicking away on laptops, conversing or reading a variety of books or papers, all while enjoying a mug of something undoubtedly delightful.

I myself struggled over what to order -- A ordered the intriguing flan latte so I went with the very tasty chai tea latte, a cute little leaf pattern in my foam. The flan latte, which I got a sip of, was very tasty -- like hot, liquid flan with foam. After reading the description of the Stickybun Scotti, I also had to order a piece of that, and then also went back for another after enjoying its delicious caramel flavor.

The staff was friendly and produced our beverages promptly. A and I also enjoyed free copies of the Onion and a round of checkers and tic tac toe from a game set provided by the coffeehouse.

Aside from the fantastic drinks and chill atmosphere, Dominican Joe has an inspiring story behind its business. They work with one farm in the Dominican Republic to procure their coffee from start to finish. Their efforts support education and fair treatment and wages for the people in that region.

Definitely my new favorite coffee place. It's a shame it's about 1,700 miles away.

I'm no coffee snob.  Like wine, I can only tell you when it's really bad!  So I can definitely say that the coffee here is not bad.
This place is very trendy in a downtown sort of way.  I'm used to the shabby chic places like Bennu and Epoch.  But I have to commend Dominican Joe for it's social service effort.  Very social work.  All the more reason to go here and buy a cup... help out some po' folks.  :)

They have a nice back patio and plenty of tables to work at.  The parking can be a bastard sometimes because they share their lot with Wells Fargo, Sweet Tea Headquarters, and Free Birds.

Go and give it a try.  It's the best coffee shop near the downtown area for sure.

The relaxed atmosphere of this coffee shop is conducive to getting work done or catching up with friends.  The only setback is the small parking lot which could be a problem during peak hours. There's plenty of tables (and not just the tiny, one-person kind) and a couple couches.  The menu is pretty diverse with a variety of coffee and tea beverages.  I got a caffe latte which was great! Not too syrupy sweet.  The prices are affordable as well.  There's also empanadas, lemon bars, biscotti, and the like to munch on.  The volume level is just right, soothing background music (think Frou Frou, Coldplay, etc.) playing over the soft chatter of the rest of the patrons.

I'll definitely be back!

In my five days in Austin, I tried four coffee shops--all were great, but this one was the best, and the one I returned to on my last day. The cafe latte was delicious, as was the breakfast taco (from Torcy's). The enironment was also great for working.

Ok. Well I had Chai here recently that was really really sweet, but I still wouldn't give them anything less than 5 stars. Their baristas have always been friendly, and besides that one chai, everything has been good. For all you non-coffee drinkers, they have a really good mojito lemonade I would recommend.

Response to Sharla Megilligan, E.D. of Makarios International:

Sharla, thank you for the clarification. I did not intend to make it sound as though the Dominican Joe is owned by Makarios, but I can see how it may have come across as such. I find it curious, though, that you're posting your comment under the entity "Dominican Joe" when you are, in fact, the Executive Director of Makarios. It's because you're also a manager for Dominican Joe, LLC, right? The two organizations are not as separate as you make it seem.

Makarios may be honest about what it does, but Dominican Joe fails to be completely forthright about your organization's activities. I'm glad to hear that you provide education and other basic needs to the people of the Dominican Republic, regardless of their beliefs, but your words on your website, from April 2005 to at least the beginning of 2008, make it very clear that your organization gives the most value to the word of Jesus. To me, that says that the services you provide are merely an opportunity to reach people in order to evangelize. "[E]ducational development . . . will ultimately mean little if these children are not introduced to a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ." Your words. Makarios has other motives, period. Another piece of evidence? An advertisement on the Austin Stone Community Church website for teachers:
"Makarios is looking for Spanish-speaking teachers willing
to serve the Lord in the Dominican Republic!"
In short, you have religiously-motivated individuals providing educational development and other basic needs to people in the Dominican Republic, funded, in part, by people purchasing food, coffee and other beverages from Dominican Joe.

There is absolutely no way I would ever knowingly give money to any organization that funds activities such as yours, regardless of whether the money actually directly funds the proselytizing or not. After all, the religious activities aren't really that costly, anyway, particularly when you have so many volunteers coming from the Austin Stone Community Church to help you with those efforts. There are lots of other organizations I happily give money to who provide similar services, but without religious motivations.

I strongly believe that you and Mehul Patel should be forthright about all of Makarios' activities and how DJ's money funds it. Let customers decide whether they wish to help fund those efforts or not.

I love the setup of this place outside and in.  Besides being in close proximity to where my long run ends they have provided the added bonus of being delicious.  I had the frojo latte and loved it.  The cranberry muffin was pretty good.  I couldn't resist buying the espresso bean chocolate bar for my parents and I liked that it as locally produced.  On my tour of Austin coffee houses I am putting this at the top of my list.

I'm in love with Dominican Joe! Even though I was devoted to Genuine Joe before, now I'm traveling here on my day offs every week! From Allandale!

The drinks here got me dreaming about them! I am addicted to the almond cookie green tea... it's amazing. It has the nutty & buttery aroma of freshly baked almond cookies, and there's also the mild and refreshing green tea aftertaste. The flan latte, chai latte, and mocha are all very good.

I like coming here in the afternoons, with daylight shining into the space. When it gets darker outside, the lighting does get a little dim for reading. But it creates the warm and relaxing atmosphere. I like how the place is set up perfectly for working on laptops-  free wifi, easy access to electrical outlets, and nice, firm tables. I'm actually writing this review here at Dominican Joe as a living proof! *sips my almond cookie green tea*

Baristi here are friendly and cute! They play good music, too. There is also outdoor seating and a parking lot.

Dominican Joe, why are you so perfect? *sighs*

Dominican Joe has good coffee but I have some complaints about it. Parking can be difficult. Although I did luck out and found a spot in front of the coffee place. The person at the register forgot to prepare my empanada and totally forgot. I had to remind them and then they left it out there without telling me it was ready. It was cold by the time I found out that it was ready.

I'm willing to give them another chance but I would rather go to other coffeehouses too.

Since my first review of this place almost two full years ago, quite a bit has changed. It's become quite the popular place for college students, Bible studiers, suits on breaks, and more. And with that explosion in popularity, it's gone way downhill.

Yesterday it took 12 minutes to get an apple cider (recipe: Heat up cider. Pour in mug. Sprinkle cinnamon on top), but that's not the worst of it. It once took HALF AN HOUR to get a latte. And it was a bad latte (scorched milk) to boot.

My typical order is a plain coffee to go, simply because I don't like to wait for a poorly made espresso-based drink. But two of the last four times I've been there (and about that frequently otherwise), the Dominican (house) coffee was OUT. Once, both pots were sitting empty and I had to wait for a whole new jug to be brewed. It seems that a good coffee shop would keep a close eye on the drip coffee and have a new one ready to go well before the old one was done, or even replace the old one once it's been out for X minutes, as coffee really does lose its flavor and warmth after a while of sitting idle. Not so here.

The employees are a mixed bag, some friendly and others completely indifferent. A couple guys I see there most often are on top of things, the others generally distracted.

Prices have gone up by 50 cents a drink across the board. The WiFi is used by so many people, I often can't get anything done. Finding a seat is a challenge about half the time, usually when school's in session or it's Bible season (not sure why, but these groups seem to meet more at certain times). I guess I can't fault the shop for being popular, so I won't count off for that.

For now, the ONLY reason I come back is when I have an hour or two to kill before going into the office and I want some caffeine. It's best missed, otherwise, and if the weather's good, Jo's is a better choice all around.

This is a two-star review at best, so why keep it at three? Well, I genuinely like having a shop so close to my office, and I remember the good old days when it was decently priced, clean (seriously, the pillows here get gross!) and offered consistently great service, and I believe that it could be that way again some day.

A girl can hope ...

I've been coming to DJs (as I fondly call it) for about 2 years now. I work from 'home' and this has literally been my second office. My conference room is out on the lovely patio (though the Riverside Dr. traffic noise can sometimes be an issue). The people are SO nice and friendly, and after visiting MANY other coffee shops in the area, I've found that DJs definitely has the best music. They also have a great selection of Green Cart sandwiches and wraps, Sugar Mama's cupcakes, fruit, yogurt, etc. The variety is great since I come here all the time.

The only downside I've found is the parking. It can be brutal. I don't even try to come anytime near lunch time anymore since you're also competing with the Freebirds lunch crowd.

Even though the parking situation royally sucks, I still have to give them 5 stars since I like this place so much.

Oh, and the massages on Thursdays are great!

This place has the best variety of drinks!

The coffee and the espresso are above average and the coffee alternatives are all very good. There are many creative options on the menu such as a mexican coke (real sugar) with vanilla and cream, lemonade, a cranberry juice and ginger ale cocktail, and frozen virgin mojitos. I appreciate how they use very high quality syrups (all with sugar rather than corn syrup). And there are plenty of teas to choose from, which are all very good also.

I come here all the time and am never disappointed.

I used to love Dominican Joe. They have great food, decent coffee, a nice selection of other beverages and a friendly staff. However, I'm not the only one that enjoys this place. It has become very crowded - sometimes overcrowded (I've had to leave several times because I couldn't find a seat). I also find that a handful of people that frequent DJ are quite rude and obnoxiously loud - not DJ's fault, but something to note.

Many of these obnoxiously loud people are Christian groups who go to DJ's to discuss the Bible, etc. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a Christian myself and I'm not putting down anyone's beliefs or anything like that (I know that this is going to result in some angry msgs, etc.). However, I do have a problem with people (not just religious groups - although it tends to be Christian groups at DJ) that do not respect the people around them - meaning talking ridiculously loud (like I can still hear every word through my earplugs) when it's obvious that people are studying or working around them, trying to force beliefs on others, disrespecting other people/groups, etc. I don't feel that a public coffee shop is the place for such things.

So, to wrap up - I really enjoy Dominican Joe, however I had a take off a star for some of the patrons.

If I had known this place existed when I was a poor college student living on Riverside, I would've been all over this place. They have free WiFi and plenty of electrical sockets. That is a major plus since quite a few coffee places only have a few in the corner. This place is rather up to date.

It's a nice place to study, although the lighting is somewhat poor. It has a mood-lighting feel. Almost romantic. There is plenty of seating, but apparently, some people have trouble finding open seats... perhaps I've only gone when it was slow.

They have a lot of drinks. My girlfriend gets their tea and the tea bags smell delicious. I don't know how the tea tastes, but if it tastes as good as it smells, then you got one amazing tea. I had their Chai Latte... a little too milky for me, but still good.

The staff is also nice...except when I said I wanted my Chai for here, they gave it to me for to-go. Maybe they don't like me!? ;_;  ... yes that is me crying. But really, a good staff makes up for any flaws of a business... not that this place had flaws.

Dominican Joe is a good place to get work done on the laptop.  Plenty of seating and tables, the internet is fast and reliable, and theres lots of power outlets around.  They play decent music, but it doesn't drown out your thoughts.  In fact I'm typing this from there as I take a break...

Oh and the coffee is pretty good too.  And the staff is nice.

The parking does kind of suck because the bank on the lot has claimed way too many spaces for itself (how many people actually go into a bank branch these days?)

okay back to work now...

Ouch, I have to deduct a star for crap parking.  The last two times I've dropped by, I've been unable to snag a spot.  Wells Fargo is hogging all the parking.  It made me late to a meeting I'd scheduled here, and I hate to keep a client waiting.  My advice is to have a Plan B figured out just in case you find yourself SOL too...either that, or apply mastermind techniques a la The Secret.

I love coming here! It's such a chill experience but every time I come here which is usually their slowest times of the day, I seem to wait at least 15 minutes for a FroJoe. What the heck, DJ? I don't mind the wait though because it's 4 bucks not being spent at StarBucks. Suck on that, Starbucks!

Parking space is alright considering the fact that they are sharing space with 4 plus stores. I've never drank my coffee here but when school starts, I think I'll bring my macbook and books here to study.

If you sign up for DJ emails, they'll tell you when they have free massages and such. Not a bad deal. I haven't taken advantage of this yet but believe me, I will.

So if you want some great coffee, a chill place, and knowing that you're money is helping somebody and not going towards those mega coffee chains, come here.

Dominican Joe's is now my Facebook friend!  That's a little dorky, I know, but  I drink a lot of coffee.

While the coffee here is not my favorite in town (watery frozen drinks, slightly acidic drip coffee), this is still a neat place.  The varied seating and large space makes it a good place to meet friends for some board games or to hear a new band.  Also, it's not too loud in here most of the time, which I appreciate.  If I had a laptop, I'd work on it here.

Their partnership with a non-profit also sets DJ's apart from its competition.  They don't just provide tasty food and beverages; they want to make a difference in the world. The money you spend here helps support educational and economic development in the Dominican Republic, making tangible difference in the lives of people in that country.  Check out the photography on the walls if you want to see some of the great work DJ's helps to support.

I generally go here to meet a friend that works nearby.  It's usually quiet and not too crowded.  The atmosphere is nice and pleasant to hang out in, whether inside where there's lots of tables and it's cool and spacious, or outside where there's fewer tables and it's hot...guess where I'd rather be...

The staff are usually really nice and friendly.  If you go a lot, they remember you, which can be good and can be...not so good, if you're not in the mood to be remembered!

Like anywhere, the quality of the coffee drinks I get usually varies depending on who made it, but they're generally pretty good.  Not outstanding, but totally worth the money.  The food items are yummy - I love the chicken salad and the turkey from the little cooler by the register!  Mmm.

They have really nice furniture too.  One of these days I'm going to stick one of their big wooden tables under my shirt and casually walk out with it...

My first impression of Dominican Joe's was a big, "Cool!"  I'm a sucker for spacious coffee houses and "Do-Joe's" could hold the longhorn band.  The stained concrete floors, split-level seating and high ceilings enhance the airy ambiance.  I noted that the furnishings were fairly high end and looked comfy.  Next time I'm in, I will sit and sip for a while.

That afternoon, I wanted something more refreshing than a hot cup of coffee.  There are numerous tea varieties and I opted for an Almond Cookie Green Tea.  I added a little stevia (which I carry in my purse) to sweeten it.  Whoa.  What deliciousness.

Dominican Joe's carries gluten-free cookies and snacks.  Very nice for those of us who have this health concern.  I wish they would carry gluten-free/dairy free items.  I would live here if they did.

It is awesome that Dominican Joe's works with non-profit organizations and purchases their coffee from a fair trade company. Knowing this, I gladly give them 5-stars.

Rick G. and I stopped in here today for some coffee and hopes of running into Don.  No Don P. but there was a super cute and friendly girl working the register that made my first impression a good 5 stars.

I really like the interior design from the multilevel to decide where to sit and stained concrete floor to the beam ceiling and comfy couches.  Most importantly there is ample distance between tables for navigating with a hot cup of coffee.

Another 5 stars for the country music playing in the background at the perfect level - Dolly Parton, Asleep at The Wheel, Willie...

The patio is also nice but it was way too hot to enjoy it today.

The regular coffee is nice and strong but a bit acidic for my sensitive tummy.  Next time I will go for an espresso drink instead.

Over all great place to meet a friend, log onto your lap top, read a book or people watch - today there was a girl with her dog in her purse cute.

Dominican Joe was started here in Austin by Sharla and Mehul, who met at UT's LBJ school.  Prior to attending UT, Sharla was a teacher for four years in the Dominican Republic (DR) and while she was there, was introduced to the extreme poverty that exists in the bateyes (villages that generally aren't on maps and consist of mostly one-room huts made from palm leaves and unrolled tin cans, typically on sugar plantations).  A typical worker there cuts sugar cane 12 hours a day for about $4 a day.

Sharla eventually left the DR and started Makarios while at UT.  Makarios is a non-profit that works in the DR to help through education and vocational training... they teach classes, provide food for students, and are starting a farm where they are teaching locals to farm.  While growing Makarios, Sharla met several poor coffee farmers who were not able to sell their coffee... "big coffee" wouldn't pay enough that it was worth harvesting.

To make a long story a little shorter, Sharla started a coffee importing business through Makarios that pays farmers fair wages... Ruben (a TOTALLY cool farmer guy I met when I visited the DR) manages the DR side of the business and makes sure that coffee farmers are properly compensated.

Obviously, this is the coffee we use for our "Dominican Blend."  Cool to know that I've actually met some of the farmers who grow it!!! (their pics are by the bathrooms along with a few pics here and there of DR kids).

Our Tea come from a guy I've known forever here in Austin.  He and his family started Tea Embassy and we carry their tea.  I'm not a huge tea person but I've heard from many customers that our tea is amazing.  And I like it that we are in turn supporting local business (and a friend).

Free wireless, some of the nicest staff around (seriously nice people), good space and vibe.  And the food we have (no kitchen so it's all pre-made) is really good as well.  Oh, and I LOVE that we have bottomless self-serve coffee.  Don't have to wait in line for a refill.

One of my closest friends (Annie) is currently the manager and she recently invented the cocablanca... which I refused to try forever because it didn't sound good.  But I had one this week and it is truly amazing... tastes like a coke float.

PS  I wish I could "no vote" on the rating... I would give 5 stars but feel better about 4 since I'm certainly biased.

The perfect chai tea latte in all of Austin thus far.

Although their chairs are uncomfortable, internet a bit slow, their drinks are wonderful.

PLUS! It's all for a good cause, I definitely only come here for the drinks, but hey, that's an all right reason to frequent a coffee place.

I have a crush on Dominican Joe.

He's spacious, quiet (but not alarmingly so), inexpensive, friendly and serves me the best coffee in South-Central Austin (and beyond).

DJ is also generous, giving time and money for education and better pay for residents of the Dominican Republic and Haiti (and many others worldwide). He's also a socialite, but I'm can't be jealous because Dominican works with Austin non-profits to change the world, little by little.

He is a sanctuary for studying, reading, relaxing. Lazy Sundays and a cup of Joe to go. And he's even working on his baking skills. Best of Austin.

I think it's love.

Dominican Joe's is A-OK only because their parking lot sucks. They share it with way too many other cool places like Freebirds and our favorite drop in and say hi place, Sweet Leaf Tea offices. Being our son and his friend wrote and YouTubed a Sweet Leaf song for them, we get free tea. You probably could too... if you can freakin' park!

If you can, drop by Dominican Joe's ~ way cool vibe inside. Great coffee (and we became coffee snobs while living in Seattle briefly). Their pastry and food selections are nice to.

One of my favorite places to meet someone because it's usually noisy enough in there that eavesdropping is limited (unless you want to and try which can also be fun ~ 'she was so pissed off she scream whispered to her daughter... I swear to God I'd smack the sh*t out of you if we weren't in church'.

You can also look across the street and check the billboard for your mega millions dream. I'm just saying...

Awesome. A coffee shop with a mission (check out the website), a beautifully designed, airy space (including an outdoor patio that gets just the right amount of sun), and delicious beverages. Definitely try the chaipuccino if you're up for a splurge. Excellent tea selection for less pricey options. And they are open until midnight!

My new office is Dominican Joe.

UPDATE: Still lovin' the place, but the music's very 'background ambient' - could be better/less generic. Also, not that it's their fault, but the outdoor patio gets a lot of street noise - it'd be nice if there was more wall on the street side to block that out.

Awesome concept, great coffee, and even though they don't make these, the most delicious wheat and gluten free chocolate chip cookies EVER!
Seriously, I've never seen a cookie with so many chocolate chips side by side.

Also, the staff seems like they have fun and could very possibly also like each other.  I like the little secluded patio in the back.  It's right next to riverside but I never really feel like I'm sitting next to a busy street.  Great job on creating seclusion with the walls and foliage.  Anywho, anywhere with wifi, cookies, and coffee is a hit with me.

Moo.

This coffee house is my new home office. The space is spacious and quiet. Free WIFI, good cappuccinos, and if you come early they have the delicious breakfast tacos from Taco Deli.

Furthermore, you'll help change the world with every delicious coffee you drink. Dominican Joe's primary coffee is purchased from Makarios, an Austin-based non-profit organization doing educational development work in the Dominican Republic. Skipping the large corporate middle-man, Makarios works directly with farmers in the region and pays them higher wages and supports their communities in an effort to develop self-sustaining skills for the future.

What can I say, I am Dominican.

I am always for a look out for new coffee shop. Dominican Joe seen to be the place to meet friends for quiet time and to have good conversation, great food. Being Dominican myself, I was excited to visit this  coffee shop.  As the previews reviewer mention, it is very spacious, the coffee is good and it is for a good cause.

I am planning on visiting again to try out the free Wi-Fi.  I am recommending this place  to my friends to visit it.

I go here with a stack of books in hand along with my Asus eee to get some reading done.  Great wireless.  Plenty of outlets, unlike some coffee shops...

I usually buy with the bottomless coffee for 2.60, a great deal for me, as I usually end up staying for 4 hours or more.  I always leave with a terrific caffeine buzz :D

The humanitarian emphasis of the shop is a plus too!

Home of the best (of MANY versions) vanilla latte I've had in my two trips to Austin...And a beautiful space that increased my desire to move here along with everybody else so I can hang out and work in spots like this. They also have a flan latte which the man taking my order (owner? manager?) described to me, involving caramel and flan syrup and whipped cream, but I wasn't sure I was ready for that level of commitment.

I got a really good pumpkin muffin too. I'm a little hesitant with muffins, because quite frankly most of them suck and I try not to eat too much sugar with my sugar drink in the morning. However - I was desperate. It was more like pumpkin bread - very tasty. And yes, the mission of the space works as well. Wish I'd had more time to hang out.
