Looking back on my years living in New Orleans, Domilise's makes the quintessential po boy, the one I constantly crave but am unable to find its match, anywhere.

Right off Tchoupitoulas, this totally unassuming sandwich shop, with bar included, is totally unpretentious. Few tables and bar stools provide the only seating and sometimes you are lucky enough to grab one and other times you take your sandwich to go. Pictures of national celebrities (John Goodman, the Manning brothers) are on the wall as well as pictures of local celebrities.

Serving up the po boys is an assembly line of ladies fixing po boys to perfection. The po boys, particularly their shrimp po boy is fantastic. It comes replete with oodles of sweet and perfectly fried shrimp placed on top of perfectly flakey, crusty and chewy french bread. I like my po boys "dressed", and the shrimp comes with lettuce, pickles and a hot ( but not too spicy) sauce. It is delicious. I also enjoy the roast beef po boy dripping with gravy, lettuce and mayo. The roast beef is reminiscent of a thinly sliced brisket and the gravy is rich and well seasoned.

To accompany my sandwich, I prefer a very cheap beer served in an icy mug or a Barq's in a bottle, and both are readily available here. Beware though that hours can be inconsistent and the line can get very, very long. For me though, any line is worth the wait because this is not only a great sandwich shop but a slice of Americana.

It just wasn't that good.  I wanted a hot sausage sandwhich but found that they only  serve hot "smoke" sausage sandwich.  My mom ordered shrimp and wife ordered fish and uncle ordered oyster sandwiches.  This place is not really very friendly it's like you're a tourist and we're going to "put up" with you spending money here.

Haughty but really based on product not called for.  Never go back.  Didn't really care about prices but atmosphere  was cold an distant.  I guess you have to be a "local" to get warm treatment...Won't go back in this life time!  One exception...loved the old guy behind the bar.

How does this place only have 4 stars? I grew up in new orleans and i've yet to find a better, more authentic po boy (more affectionately called a poor boy on their menu as that's the original name of this delicious sandwich).

My friend and I split the shrimp and the sausage po boys and of course got a bag of crawtator zapps chips and a barqs root beer. I never drink soda, so the barqs was a treat in and of itself... bonus that we were eating all local stuff.

I was a bit skeptical about the sausage po boy, but damn was it tasty. The sauce was a mixture of some sort of chili and mustard and it dripped all the way down my arm, much to the chagrin of my sweater...

The shrimp sandwich was perfectly fried and not overly dressed. The zapps were crunchy and a great accompaniment. it took a bit of time for them to take our order, but I noticed they were making quite a few to go orders... worth the wait for sure!

Come here if you don't care of fancy schmancy crap. come here if you want to unbutton your pants at the end of a  meal and do the al bundy. Come here for some real new orleans.

The lady behind the counter asked me in a rather rude manner what I wanted. I hadn't seen a menu or wasn't asked if I'd like to sit down. She pointed to a wall (behind me) that had all their sandwich options, there were roughly 15 choices. I knew I wanted an oyster or shrimp Po' Boy but they had a half/half option so obviously I went with that. The price...$14 for the large and $9 for the small. She showed me the size, 5 inches is a small and 10 inches is the large. Does it come with any fries or chips?....nope.

Well, I guess I'll go ahead and get the large half & half I told her. She asked how I wanted it and reluctantly ran through my options. I got everything (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce) except pickles, also their creole mustard (with Horseradish). I asked her for a water and she just pointed me towards someone else. She really didn't want me around and acted like I was such a nuisance.

The sandwich itself was pretty good. The bread was a bit stale but apparently this is how Po' Boys are authentically. Not really my thing but if that's how they're supposed to be that's how it was. The shrimp and the oysters were phenomenal and certainly saved this from being a total disaster. Really the sandwich was good but considering I paid $14 for a pretty small meal I wasn't blown away. I now there are many many small sandwich shops in the New Orleans area that are doing a really good Po' Boy for half the price.

I have a more in-depth review and photos on my personal blog.

Luckily we were the only ones when we arrived so there was no wait. We chose to sit at the bar for a refreshing Abeta on tap. The guys that were working were real friendly and we had a good talk about the NFL.  We ordered a full size poboy: half oyster/shrimp sandwich. This was our first po'boy experience so we didn't know what to expect. Upon the first bite, I understood why this has become the staple NO sandwich. Crispy and fried to perfection with the perfect blend of sauces. Thank you Domilise!

Tucked away in a residential neighborhood yielded amazing po-boys. It was our last stop before we went to the airport. We got in line and ordered a shrimp po-boy and a hot sausage. Beau grabbed two stools and ordered us sodas and chips. (mmm).

The hot sausage was outstanding- warm and spicy. The shrimp po boy was good- but lacking for me. I should have added more hot sauce.

Loved the mix of people in the place- a really local gem as well as the icy cold glasses for soda and beers.

One night I was watching the food network and i saw a show that was called "Sandwiches you will love" I think. Anyway, a sandwich shop came on that was located in New Orleans, LA. I knew that I was going to be in New Orleans for Voodoo Fest, like i am every year so I thought i would write it down so i could check it out.

True to the show it was in a somewhat shabby looking building quite some distance from the touristy French Quarter. I had the Hot Smoked Sausage dressed with the chili sauce. This was a sandwich that was packed with flavor. My girlfriend had the roast beef po-boy dressed and smothered in gravy. It was hard to tell which one I liked more but i think I would go with the sausage since it did seem to have more flavor. I did notice that almost everyone in line ordered a shrimp po-boy so maybe that's what I should have tried. Maybe next time as I am sure that I will make it a point to stop by this place any time I find myself in New Orleans.

Tucked in an Uptown neighborhood (my neighborhood, actually) this po-boy shop is the best in town.  The woman who runs the place actually lives in the other half of this house.  It's true old-school New Orleans and I love it.

The shrimp po-boy is to die for, and the oyster po-boy and roast beef po-boy are delicious as well.

Call before visiting; they have odd hours (closes early and Sundays)

Among the top 5 BEST SANDWICHES i've ever had. I had the large shrimp and oyster, dressed. It was perfect. Tons of shrimp and oysters, and the spicy sauce gave it a nice kick. The ladies working behind the counter were sweet and nice. As for the price, hell, a little pricey, but i'll gladly pay for this goodness. This place is reason enough for me to come back to New Orleans!

And in case you're wondering what's on my top 5 Best Sandwiches list:

1. Italian Beef at Mr. Beef, Chicago
1. Cuban at Zingermann's, Ann Arbor, MI
2. Sopressata on Italian loaf, Salumi, Seattle
3. Shrimp and Oyster Po'Boy at Domilise, New Orleans
4. Croque Madam at Luke, New Orleans
5.  Anything at Hot Doug's, Chicago

My boyfriend and I were the only two people in the place. It was rather dull, so we decided to take it to go. I had the shrimp poboy on which the shrimp were very small and bland. My boyfriend had the smoked hot sausage poboy which he only ate half of. This is very unusual because he is a big boy and always polishes off every meal. Overall, we were disappointed.

I absolutely ADORE this place.  They have the best shrimp po' boy that I've ever had in my life.  It's unbelievable and goes well with Crystal hot sauce.  Not only that, they have the coldest beer in the frostiest mugs that I've ever tried.  I came here after work in the 9th ward for dinner and it was exactly what I needed after a tiring day of construction.  I had several frosty beers and a delicious po' boy.  The atmosphere is so relaxed and old school.  I also tried some of the roast beef and gravy po' boy and it too was excellent.  I like to get them "dressed" meaning with toppings, but that's just a matter of preference.  I definitely have to say that if someone was going to New Orleans and asked me where they should get a po' boy, I would without hesitation send them to Domilise's. I learned while I was there that Anthony Bourdain was there in his New Orleans episode.  I can see why, it's one of those places that I would go to at least once a week if I lived in New Orleans.

I had my first po'boy here.  It started as a typical tourist experience:  we heard from a local that we met at a bar where to go, then proceeded to find it.  Took the Magazine St. bus there, walked through the charming neighborhood, then thought, "okay, what was that address..."

So, we realized that it really was that little house-looking place on the corner with no visible sign (coming from where we were).  Walked in and sort of watched what other people did.  Realized that you take a number from the wall, then they call you to take your order.  Okay, all good now.  Found a table, ordered some red cream soda from the bar and hung out.  I watched the ladies dip and fry each order as it came in - oh so fresh!

Then..."#35" Oh goody!  Fried oysters on a soft, toasted roll.  Umm, umm, umm!  Put on a bit of hot sauce, and there was little talk as we chowed down.

The best part was when I realized that the little steps going up the side of the place actually led to the owner's house (dur, I said it looked like a house).  Too cool!  I love that family thing!  God bless New Orleans!

Authentic Po' Boy sandwiches.

Since it's New Orleans, you have to get your po' boy with fried shrimp.  It's not health food, but that's a-okay because it's down-right delicious.  Do yourself a favor next time you're in town and go to Domilise's.  It's not a New Orlean's experience without a visit.

It's a humble place with the nicest local people who make your sandwiches right there.  Apparently, the Manning brothers went there when they were growing up so they have some memorabilia on the wall.  The outside facade is a little bit hard to find since the hurricane, so make sure you write the address down.

I live literally on the same block as this place, and have been for over a month now, but only today got around to walking inside.  What was I thinking?!  I should have tried this place the day I moved in.  I just enjoyed one hell of a roast beef po'boy, and look forward to trying many of their other available options in the coming months.

It is a bit expensive, $11 for the large roast beef one I just got, but I'm happy to support something local and fantastic.

I will see you again soon Domilise... perhaps I could arrange some kind of po'boy catapult...

If I ever went back to eating meat, it would be because of a Dom's roast beef & swiss.  The seafood is always fresh and the bread is good.  No I don't wait in the long lines, but will pop in when it's not too crowded.

As a bonus, if you eat in, you smell like fried for awhile, but that's a good thing, right?

Not really my kind of place but I enjoyed it the one time I went.  Sandwiches should be delicious but not super pricey.  I think they have the sandwhich thing down but not so much the price.  Luckily the cheap beer tempered my feeling about this and my friends and I love it.  Roast beef was great and I loved the spicy mustard they used.  Ok so lets recap...

Highly acclaimed, expensive, old timer-ish, whole in the wall, good sandwhiches, great dressing, cheap beer!
Go but please don't worship this place!

The story you are about to read is true.

12:22 pm. My partner, my wife and I head out to the best reviewed Sandwich Shop in the city. Nestled in the middle of a neighborhood, Domilise is a shy little building that makes no pretense to be more than it is.

"You've got to be kidding" my wife chirps as we get out and head to the door. We hold our tongues as we step inside.

The menu is posted on the wall and my first impression is the prices are higher than a two bit junkie. At near a saw buck for a sandwich these had better be good. My partner gets the shrimp Po'boy and I get the Turkey & Ham. My wife is not about to pay these prices until she sees the food.

Overall the sandwiches are good but not worth the price.

This is my long awaited 100th review!  I was waiting for the right place, and yesterday, I found it: Domilise Sandwich Shop and Bar.

This was my first trip to New Orleans.  It was too short and I can't wait to return to experience even more of this awesome place.

My host and co-worker Maria took me to what she describes as one the most authentic neighborhood places for  a po'boy: Domilise.

Apparently the po'boy was created by New Orleans Italian restaurant owners to give to the young men (po'boys) who were on strike from their jobs as street car drivers.  Since Maria and I are union organizers it seemed our obligation to eat fried oyster po'boys (dressed) and drink beers at lunch.  (something we will be doing everyday after the revolution)

My oyster po'boy was so good.  It was a fried, sauced, heavy mess and it paired perfectly with a icy draft served in a beer goblet.

The ladies taking your orders and making your sandwiches were clearly grandmother, daughter, and granddaughter.  The tiny wiry man behind the bar, Grandpa I assume, was getting beers and moving around kegs and crates like nobody's business.

The facility itself was somewhat amazing in its tattered-ness.   No sink in the bathroom, empty coolers behind the bar, that clearly have not been in working order for years, a door to what appears to be an apartment, no parking, a handmade sign on the door, a line of locals 10 deep...something that could never exist in the suburbs.  Years of love, filth, work and stories have left a dingy sheen on this place.  Same as New Orleans itself.

The night before I left for New Orleans, Bill pulled me aside at the bar and, with the gravest most down to business look in his eyes, put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Lily.  I need you to do something for me while you're down there. I need you to eat a po boy, and report back to me on whether they're actually better than sub sandwiches."

Aye aye, Captain!!

I get to New Orleans and relay my assignment to Joshua who, out of what I believe to be both Southern Pride and jealousy influenced machismo, proclaims, "WE'RE GOING TO DOMILISES"

Fucking Christ those po boys were good! Got one that was shrimp and one that was half catfish, half shrimp. Joshua and I decided to take'em home so we could get into our underwear under the ceiling fan and pig out; get Domilise dressing all over ourselves, take shots of tequilla in between bites, pass windies.

Captain Bill, they may not have any type of public infrastructure, federal funding, job market, traffic regulations, but fuck does New Orleans have po boys.

Im not so sure about this place.  The 3 behind the counter seemed indifferent to our business.  The small shrimp po boy for 10 dollars was REALLY small...terrible value.  Just a dot of mayo, no tomatos available, and 1 pickle.  The shrimp was good, but not worth the ten bucks.  Companion had the large roast beef and cheese at 12 dollars, and for 12 bucks we could have bought our own roast beef. Poor value for the money.  I recall Parasol's shrimp po boy being so much bigger and more affordable.    We won't go back.  The guy behind the bar was cool, and we liked the Miller High Life in the frosty mug. Two bucks for about 9 oz.  **Be forewarned- the menu board posted here are OLD PRICES!  Prices up at least twenty five percent.  I will give it 2 stars for the food, but 1 for value and friendliness.

I hate to say the phrase that follows, but here it is: As a tourist in this town I have to go WAY out of my way to eat at this sandwich shop.
It was worth it in so many ways.  The only food they cook is sandwiches, no fries, no salads, nothing but sandwiches.  There are potato chips, and ice cream sandwiches.  We had several different sandwiches.  Roast beef, shrimp, and catfish.  The catfish was probably the best, with the beef second, and the shrimp third.  None of them were bad by any means, that is just the order I liked them.
There was a line out the door, no direction in how to order, but really really good.  Go for lunch then hit some bars on magazine for a good experience.  All they do is sandwiches, and they do it perfectly.  Plenty of beers and rootbeer in a bottle to help wash them down.

My favorite New Orleans food.  Full stop.

In 2005, just after Katrina hit, NPR sent a reporter to assess how the city was doing, and the big scoop was that Domilise's was okay.  I felt guilty knowing that during that horrible aftermath, my first thought was always about Domilise's, but that report showed I was not alone.  People love Domilise's that much!

If you're new, get the shrimp.  That is the Platonic ideal of a po-boy, made with untoasted Leidenheimer bread and served on a paper plate.

Where to start?  This place raised me and most of my friends.  Mama Domilise still pinches me on the cheek when I go in.  Nicest people in the world, best po-boys in New Orleans hands down.  Worth particular mention are the shrimp, oyster, and shrimp/oyster "half & half".  Get the hot sauce that they put on behind the counter - I don't know what it is, but it ads a flavor that you can get nowhere else.  It was almost twenty years before I could tear myself away from those two po-boys to try anything else but one day on a lark I ordered the cheeseburger po-boy with everything.  It was a revelation.  It came stock with chili, hot sauce, and grilled onions making it the kind of drip-to-the-elbow mess that you might only want to consume alone or in the company of good friends.  Basically, it is the finest cheeseburger I have ever had.

Let me back up the preceding review regarding the beer.  I would never order so trashy a beer as Miller outside of this establishment, but served here nothing could hope to compliment your sandwich better.  Dirt cheap - a buck and change.  Served in a healthy sized thick glass goblet that Ray, the bartender, pulls out of a deep freezer and fills from a clean tap.  A thin layer of ice forms between the beer and the glass that slowly peels away from the chalice and drifts upwards through the beer as you eat your meal - an elegant visual that attests at a glance to the perfection of your beer's preparation and temperature.

I can't remember a time when I didn't have a Domilises poboy in my hand while in New Orleans.  My father grew up here, and whenever the extended family gathers (at least once a year), this is everyone's first stop from the airport to load up on this goodness.  When the levee broke, my father's primary concern was whether or not Miss Dot was OK.    And this is the first place he wanted to come upon his return post-hurricane.

I love bringing newbies in here..."is this someone's rec room?"  Oh, but there's nothing better than their oysters (dressed) on that incomporable french bread, with just a little hot sauce on top.   If you bring someone without the seafood jones, have them try the roast beef.

Best Po'Boys you can get. They are closed two days of the week currently. The sign out front is gone, but let me tell you those folks can make a killer sandwhich. We went with four people, got four larges, had them cut four ways and we all got to try a bit of the good stuff. Oyster Po'Boy, Shrimp Po'Boy, Roast Beef Po'Boy (MmmMm with gravy) and the Hot Sausage Po'Boy. With their cheap bottled and draft beers you cant go wrong. If you come in there though, dont grab a table when you are 20 minutes away it just makes it a pain for people in front of you to eat.

I live and die at Dot's hand.

If you plan on traveling to New Orleans any time soon, you have to stop by Domilise and get a Po'Boy. I'm originally from New Orleans and spent part of my childhood growing up down the street from Domilise's. It's the best spot to get a bottled Barq's and have a Roast Beef Po'Boy in the city.

It's one of the oldest family owned restaurants in the city. Stop in, say hot to Dot (the owner and propriator) and Ray the bartender. You won't be disappointed. I dream at times of the taste of one of their Po'Boy's in my mouth and I await my next visit with baited breath.

I give it 3.4 stars.  The poboys are good, they use a magic sauce that gives a nice punch.  But they are a bit pricey for a poboy.  They range from ~$8-12.  I would rather get a larger and *almost* as good poboy from adam's street (I say almost because they don't have that special sauce) for half the price. Or go to parkway.

Beer in a goblet is good though.  And the employees that run it are awesome.  But, really, they need to put the "Po" back in "Poboy".

Originally from the big easy, this place hands down has the best Po-Boys! This place is always my first stop when I land at the airport. I don't visit family first, I go here and grab a catfish po-boy. The fish is perfectly cooked and you gotta have all the dressings in it. This place is OG to new orleans, with a double wide as the restaurant on some bricks and a bathroom the size of my pinky, it is still worh the 5 hour flight from Cali. I have three weeks left before I get to eat here again! OMG I can't wait! =)

I'll pay it.  Hard work, and home made...that's how we like it.  I also like knowing that those hard working local people get paid well!  This is the best  damn po boy.  I tried to get the off the menu special, but unless they know ya...your not getting it.  Which I kinda actually liked.  Stick with your peeps....I see that.  Hell I don't care I support it!  The fried shrimp was out of this world.  Greasy hangover heaven.  MMMMMM.

I'm sorry to be the nay-sayer but this was a terrible experience for me.  The people were so rude.  I mean, I get that it's New Orleans and that there's some 'tude, especially at Domilise's in the Channel, blah blah blah.  But this was over-the-top rude, bordering on malicious.

And the po-boy wasn't that great.  I've had better at Danny n' Clyde's, the local gas station.  Maybe I didn't get the right one, or maybe it was a bad day for everyone but I was so perplexed and uncomfortable that I don't really ever want to go back.

I had a dream about Domilise's last night - the catfish po-boy, the shrimp po-boy, a side of gravy, and the Miller on draft in the frozen chalice mug.  The last time I visited NO I was there for 4 days for a wedding, and went to Domilice's 3 times.  If that's not enough of a testament then I don't know what is.  I also introduced my fiancee to the place, and she brings it up all the time now.  You just can't get a better po-boy anywhere, and the ambiance is killer.  It's something you feel when you're there, mowing down a roast beef, gravy dripping down your chin, slurping your Miller, and checking out pictures of Peyton on the walls.  Sure there are great po-boys in other locales (I actually found a place the last time I was in Houma), but nothing matches this spot in overall appeal.

Damn, I wish I weren't 2300 miles away!  There just isn't good NO style cuisine out here in SF - no cajun, no creole, no po-boys... nothing.  There are a couple of posers, like Cajun Pacific or PJ's, but nothing solid.  I would kill for a good bowl of gumbo and a po-boy.
