While on the Big Island, we decided one of the main things we wanted to do was to go snorkeling at  Kealakekua Bay which was the site where Captain Cook was killed (over a stolen boat no less).

Fair Wind Cruises and SeaQuest appeared to be the largest operators on island but as a rule, I like to get a local opinion. With some additional research, it looked like Fair Wind had too many passengers at a time and SeaQuest had somewhat of a yahoo reputation. Your Mileage May Vary.

Per the advice of hawaiidan on Tripadvisor's forums, we decided to try Dolphin Discoveries out and were very happy with the results. They were one of the first ones out in the morning (7:45AM) which is a good thing as we were able to arrive before things got crowded. They make two stops at Kealakekua Bay and Honaunau Place of Refuge, two of the best places to snorkel at. The boat itself was an inflatable rib carrying 10 passengers and 2 crew members.

I did not have an underwater camera but the waters in Kealakekua Bay were calm and crystal clear as well as Place of Refuge. Do use lots of strong sunscreen as you will be out in the open for several hours.

On the way back, we had an unexpected sighting of a pod of false killer whales, which apparently is an uncommon sighting this time of the year.

In any case, we really enjoyed this trip and would do it again.

PS.  Kealakekua Bay is considered a sanctuary and therefore the only other way to get to it is via kayaks.
