Tuesday night is trivia night with "Geekswhodrink", good fun for an hour or so.  Watch out for the teams who use their Iphone's to cheat.

Love the waitstaff and bartenders, tip well and you'll get the best drinks around.

The eats are bar food, so it's alright if that's all your expecting.

Doc's is my favorite chill-out bar. Whether it's cool outside and you sit by the outdoor fire pit, or it's warm and they have the fans going, a pint of Blue Moon and some chips and queso make for a fine night. I've tried some of the sandwiches and they are good but a little pricey. Wednesday night is taco night. The $1 tacos taste like they're $1, but hey, who can complain when they're that cheap? Plus they have $2 Mexican beers on Wednesday's, too.

I went to Houston recently and almost cried because I wanted to go to Doc's and there isn't anything like it in Houston. Wah...

Ive been to Doc's Backyard numerous times over the past few months and believe it gets better each time.  They have plenty of televisions to catch any game and a huge draft list too.

There was a steady crowd there for NFL Sunday Ticket and luckily I was able to secure the audio to the Texans/Titans Game before anyone else made a request for audio.

The food and staff is great too..

My hubby and I really frequented this place when we first moved down here.  We loved the Texas Beer Nights...it was a decent value and the beer was good and cold.

We tried some of the food here, and it was just typical food.  My hubby got pretty sick on it one night.

I think that we stopped frequenting here once I got pregnant, but honestly I think that there are better bars in Austin.

I have really, really wanted to like Doc's more than I do, but I'll level with you and be as fair as I can.

On the upside they've got a great beer selection and it's pretty reasonably priced. The specials they run are pretty good, and if you sit at the bar your service is usually pretty good. I'll also give them points for having a bunch of TVs and providing me a place to watch the Mavericks get killed again in the playoffs. Then again, the Spurs got killed too, so it's not all bad.

On the downside, after many visits there, I've determined that the service really sometimes lacks if you're not sitting in the immediate vicinity of the bar or the waitstaff-terminal-computer-thing where you have a good chance of making eye contact with your server. I know the place gets slammed, but that's when you ramp up staff, right? It really depends on who you get as a server - some are much more attentive than others.

The food is inconsistent. I've had great burgers there, and I've had so-so burgers there. I've had good chicken sandwiches there, and bad ones. Good tacos and bad tacos.

I guess it's the inconsistency that bugs me. You don't always know what you're going to get, and when the place is an X-factor, it knocks a star for me.

Anticipation and optimism is something I experience with every new restaurant I try because I honestly want every new place I go to become my new favorite restaurant.  However, it usually seems that something goes awry once an order has been taken and food has arrived at the table.  Such was my experience with Doc's Backyard.

The first problem of the night was the waitress.  She seemed nice enough, and even attentive on a busy Friday night, but didn't write down our order and subsequently got it wrong.  I guess you could say it's a big pet peeve of mine when someone takes your order, attempts to show you they're talented by memorizing it, but ultimately gets it wrong.  Three words:  Pen and paper.  There's nothing wrong with writing it down and I'll give you just as good (if not a better) tip for getting right on the first shot.

On to the food.

The burgers were average.  Both came cooked well done to the point they were a little dry.  They weren't bad though--just unspectacular.  The buns were a flour dusted wheat bread, I believe, which was a nice touch and the veggies were fresh.  It was big and I was hungry, so perhaps it just tasted better at the moment?

The onion rings, which arrived on the second try, were unique.  They had a taste and flavor that was like something I've never experienced before--similar to dish soap is the only way I can describe it.  Not a shining moment for sure.

The manager informed me that "everything back there is fresh", but I think I'll trust my nose and tongue over his assurance.

I ended up ordering the fries and, surprise!, they were actually quite good.  For something as simple as fried potatoes, you'd be surprised at how easy it is to screw up.  Doc's were very tasty though.  A good amount of saltiness, firm texture, a little crunchy, and just out of the fryer hot--near perfection.

Overall, I was just left wanting more.  For a sports bar, Doc's does the job--they have lots of HD TVs, beer, and fried foods galore on the menu.  It just wasn't anything special--not the worst place I've ever been, but not the best either.  Additionally, the whole fiasco with the food and service left a bad taste in my mouth--pardon the pun.  (I should note that the manager was helpful in fixing our order and ended up comping us one burger.  A very nice gesture and we left a nice tip as a result.)

Monday nights are half price hamburger nights! Woohoo! Kinda like at Thursday nights at Sonic but not...

I went there last night with my sister and brother in law... we're easy to please when there's a discount involved, but I'll happily come back and pay full price any time. There is an amazing wall of draft beer--they had my beloved HARP on tap! Yay! That always excites me. My sister had a Fireman's 4 (another fave) and brother in law had a stinky heiny... to each his own... but there are probably 20+ beers on tap. Very nice! Sonic doesn't have beer on tap... hmmm... that would make me go there more... hmmm... but they do have diet cherry limeade.... I digress...

We ordered the onion rings for an appetizer. They are cut and battered in house, not frozen. Not like at Sonic. You should ask for ranch dressing on the side to dip them in. Ranch on the side is the way to go. Gives it that special, "I'm eating a ton of fat and might have a stroke feeling". Yumm...Sonic makes you feel that way too...

I generally don't like the greasiness of the usual hamburger and usually get the chickenburger/turkeyburger/veggieburger option when I go out. I had the veggieburger this time. It's actually a Morningstar and was very good. I didn't miss the meat at all! I had it plain (no mayo/mustard) but added cheddar cheese. The lettuce is cut up like at Sonic. I love that. Not enough places cut up their lettuce like that.

My sister got the blue cheese burger and brother in law got the bar-b-q hamburger (with bacon, cheese and "hickory sauce"... what IS this "hickory"??). Both thought they were great. They did look good... and slightly better than my veggieburger... maybe I can go next time and just have half??

The special (as with the usual burgers) comes with French fries that are yum if not a little greasy. They came to me in a basket with the hamburger on top. Eh. That was okay and it worked out well but definitely added to the smoosh/greasyness factor. Maybe they could look into serving them in a little paper sack, like at Sonic...

They did have a cool outside sitting area. That will be nice when it's not blaring a blasted 120 degrees outside. There's a fire pit--that will be really nice in 8 months when it cools off again!

Some places just get it.

I have had a hankering for decent place to watch a game in south Austin for a long time now, and Doc's Backyard really hits the spot.

They haven't tried to be 8 different things to please everybody.  They just went out and tried to make a good place to meet up with some friends and have a few beers, or maybe even a few pitchers depending on the event.

Would I go to this place and not drink alcohol?  Hell no!  Then again, that would rule out most places for me.  That's why I live in Texas!

The food is sub par, but as bar food goes it's fine.  The beer selection is top notch by the bottle and tap with some decent happy hour specials.  They also do a great job of getting their horns up for the longhorn crowd on gamedays.  There is a great outdoor patio, along with a couple of shuffle board tables inside for those of you not enarmored with the game.

Above and beyond the beer selection they also offer a full bar, which really comes in handy for those 11 am UT games where a bloody mary is my beverage of choice.  Although I think that the Little Woodrows down south has decent game watching, they don't offer a full bar and I've also liked the crowds at Doc's a bit better.

So, I just read this review before submitting it.  Did I really bump this place up to four stars because I can get hard liquor there before noon?  I might be admitting too much about myself with this one!

Cheap booze, washers and a smoking area!  Count me in!

I have actually been to Doc's Backyard a handful of times, and I must say I enjoy it.  They have decent nightly drink specials (my fave is Texas Tuesday--$2.50 Texas beers all day long--love me some Fireman's Four, Live Oak Pilz or a Shiner Black).

The food is pretty good as well.  I highly recommend their fries, as they are quite delish.  However, I had a chicken salad that I was not crazy about.  The chicken was good, but it was on a bed of lettuce, and while this may sound normal, that was ALL it came on.  Yes, crispy, tasteless lettuce, one wedge of tomato and a sad little round of cucumber.  I am no salad nazi, but could I get a few more toppins?  How about some MORE veggies, throw on sprinkle of cheese or bacon or a handful of croutons.  In leiu of the lettuce fiasco, I must say that the salad dressings were good (I always get like 2 to 3--it is my way of sampling the goods).  Loved the jalapeno ranch and the vinegrette.  The nachos are decent, and I have been dying to try the cheese fries (no one will go there with me--too many calories, I guess).

The vibe at Doc's is that of a laid back watering hole, so I wouldn't recommend bringing the little ones.  Oh, but people do anyway.  I would feel more comfy boozin and chillin without the ninos, but that's just me.

Overall, if you want to drink reasonably priced beer, have a snack, and kickback with your peeps, I would say, "Head to Doc's".

Good service, great atmosphere and a true happy hour. Sipping $2 beers  while sitting on a kick ass patio with lots of people watching is my idea of relaxing after work. Doc's is a fine place to do this and get $1 tacos that will remind you of the Old El Paso ones from your childhood.  One tip: order the chicken tacos, the bean tacos blow.

This is the closest thing to a neighborhood bar for me, and for that it automatically gets 5 stars.  I've never munched on their food but the vodka was DELICIOUS.  Out back with the firepit makes me think there are some very good times to be had here in my future, hopefully when I'm not running out of steam from a long day of kickball followed by a long movie at the alamo.

Loved it, loved it.  This is what I hoped Uncle Billy's would be--a great beer joint, cool place to hang out, but with a more developed menu.  The back patio was awesome tonight, the red/white chairs & umbrellas are so fun and cheery my 3-year old started giggling maniacally just because she was so excited to sit in such an environment.  And if I you're a big sports nut you'll love the bazillion huge TVs tuned to 14 different events/games around the bar.  Very cool.

But back to the food.  Like I said, super fresh wheat buns on the burgers.  My husband said his was the best chilli burger he's ever had, my BBQ bacon cheddar burger was pretty great too and the fries were to die for.  I don't know if this was a regular special or not, but they were offering up BOGO burgers tonight (Monday), with monster baskets of fries for $3.  One basket of fries could easily feed 3-4 people as a side.  Pretty good deal.  They also had $2 Tecates.

We were super impressed.  Until the dessert.  It wasn't horrible but it didn't live up to the rest of the food.

Service was great and friendly.  We got there later than happy hour so we must've missed the majority of the meat market (yea).  We figure we won't dig it as much on a weekend night for precisely that reason...looks like a good place to hook up.  But we'll go again on a weeknight fo' sho!

This is truly what you imagine a neighborhood bar to be. I've been here with friends for happy hour, to watch Monday night football, and  late night pub crawling, but Doc's really shines most in the early afternoon on weekends when it's warm outside. Four stars for cheap beer and a wide selection, above average bar food, Ms. Pacman and washers, and a great backyard. It's attached to a strip mall though, and I can't give it the fifth simply for that reason.

Four stars for beer happy  hour deals (and selection) and atmosphere. Got to love the outdoorsy feel inside and the great patio that saddles up to the lush greenery that still exists in south Austin.
Two stars to the mediocre bar food that could clog my arteries if I ate here every time I wanted to catch a game from the well placed plasma tvs.

Nice replication of the one on South Congress, even down to the mediocre food.  But, it's close to home, it has a nice "backyard" patio that overlooks an actual greenspace.  Well, until some greedy bastard developer cuts down the trees, paves it, and puts up a Chile's or a Super Wal-Mart or a Stuff-Yourself chain restaurant or something.

Hey, they have NFL Sunday Ticket and we can see all the Colts games there and drink reasonably-priced beers.   We'll be back.

I had been here a couple of times during the summer and was disappointed the "backyard" was not open yet.  So, I kinda forgot about this place as a dinning destination..

Then this past Saturday I find myself stuck in a traffic jam on Brodie Ln. on my way to Sunset Valley Farmers Market and starving after a 3 hour hike at Bull Creek.  And what do I see but Human signs advertising 2.00 burgers all day at Doc's. So, I turn in to the new shopping complex and park far away since 2.00 burgers are popular...

I had my Pup with me so I had to tie her to the fence while I went in and ordered - praying the whole time no one would kidnap her.   I was not sure if the backyard was dog friendly so I ate my burger on a stone bench outside the backyard. It was good and hit the spot.  But it was greasy and it put me to sleep after a long hike and I forgot to get on Yelp and announce 2.00 burgers - sorry guys..

I rarely eat burgers so I wont be back for one.  But there are 2 things I highly recommend here

#1 Chicken and Cheese stuffed Fried Jalapenos

#2 Fried Avocado stuffed with Chicken and Cheese and topped with Tomatillo cream sauce

If you are passing by Sunset Valley or live in 78745, 78748 or 78749 I highly recommend this place.

Ever heard the phrase: 78745, because you are priced out of 78704?

It's funny, because it is true.

Luckily for us '45'ers, some of the 78704 businesses are moving closer to us. So there finally is a neighborhood bar in my neighborhood! Unfortunately, all the rain this summer put a delay on the building of the patio, but it should be open in late October. For the time being, it is all indoor. Same great food and beer selection as South Congress, but with maybe even better service!

I've been meaning to check this place out ever since they opened this second location in my neighborhood. I stopped by last Wednesday for the dollar taco night. The garden/patio area is nice and spacious. The taco's are kinda what you would make your kids, but still good. We shared some bean/queso dip that was tasty. I had a good Hi-Lo Margarita and we still got out of there for about twenty bucks. Service is young & friendly. I love a bargain and will be back to check out some other nights like half price burgers on Mondays, especially as the weather cools and the patio becomes more enjoyable. Welcome to the neighborhood Doc's and sorry it took me so long to stop by.

Two stars may be a little low but this is the dinner rating.  I could totally rationalize a higher rating for an after work Happy Hour.  We went on a Monday night 1/2 price burgers night.  They have a good selection of draft beers.  The kids menu was one of the better ones I've seen.  While waiting for the burgers, the kids and I went out to play washers.  Now if you are in for beer, appetizers and washers, this is your place.  The fried sliced dill pickles were spicy tasty.  The hamburger was not.  The fries were, hmmm, droopy.  I had the Blue Cheese and Peppercorn Sauce burger.  Even at half price, I overpaid.  Dry hamburger patty and dry sauce (?).  Go back for the happy hour specials and washers and you won't be disappointed.
