Great blackened fresh fish sandwich, great small little delicate flavorful oysters and wonderful corn on the cob.  Ordered extras on the corn, cause it was that good.  Thank you.

Cold beer, fresh fish, good seasoning, great corn.

Funky Dive bar. DSOB has decent food at fairly reasonable prices. We paid about $18 for a seafood platter with crab legs and shrimp. We had really really delicious oysters that were salty and fresh and came shucked so we didn't have to work for them.

Our table was sat quickly and the waitress was attentive without being overbearing. In addition to the platter, we had the Trio (scallops, calamari, and shrimp), shrimp tacos, and shrimp burger. Each were tasty but not so great that we would return. Plus, there isn't much parking downtown unless you are willing to pay $7.

Both my husband and I liked this place. It was a little pricey but it's seafood and this is a tourist town soooo it's to be expected.

We started with a seafood quesadilla which was served on top of a yellow rice. It was really good. The shrimp was juicy and tasty, the cheese wasn't too much and the calamari was tender. The rice was just rice but it was good. We also started with 1/4 lb. of crawfish. We've never had crawfish so we decided to try it. I'm not sure if they always taste the way they did or not but I was definitely not a fan. They tasted like dried out, rotten lobster.

For dinner I had a HUGE platter with shrimp and crab legs. It came with potatoes and a small corn on the cob. The shrimp was very good. The crab was not the best crab I've ever had and I didn't get much meat from them but what I did get was very tasty. The potatoes and corn were boiled and they were seasoned with some old bay. My husband got a shrimp burger which was just a hamburger with some shrimp on top. He liked it. This place is pretty much exactly like a Joe's Crab Shack but not as expensive.

Overall, it was pretty good for what it is. I'd probably go back again.

Looking at the other yelpers, seemed like me and my friends were one of the few people that had an awesome experience at this place. The staff was super friendly and nice. They showed me how to shuck an oyster, but they don't get points for that.

They get points for the huge seafood plate you see in the other pictures! We ordered it between me and my friend. We were all in shock how massive this thing is. Did it taste good? You bet it did!

If you're in the area and looking for a good casual seafood restaurant, give this place a shot despite the other reviews. I had a positive experience here. Good food (and lots of it) with a friendly staff to boot.

    Was this review …?

the Quick:  WAY overpriced dirty little oysters

    the Dirty:

We love seafood and thought we'd pop in for some oysters, as that's what this place is popular for....

We sat at the bar and ordered a dozen steamed oysters and were not impressed.  The flavor was fine, though the oysters were a bit small.  However, the shells were very dirty and about a third of them were still too closed to open with the shucking knives we were provided.  Our server was quite helpful and had them open in a jiffy but....

Here's the problem:  having to shuck your own oysters is fun when you're at an oyster roast and there's loads and loads of them for cheap.  When you're paying $18 a dozen (!!??) and shucking some dirty oysters where the muck makes it's way into the shell and you're hands are instantly a freaking mess is not acceptable.

Recommendations:  serve dirty, small, half-open oysters for $4 a dozen and let the customers feel like they're on the beach at an oyster roast

    OR

wash the oysters first, steam them, open and inspect ALL the shells to make sure nothing is amiss, throw in a couple extra to make up for the small ones and overcharge slightly because you're in downtown Wilmington.

    Ah, Squids....you've spoiled us!

Five of my dozen oysters has broken pieces of shells in them. The place was nearly empty but service was still bad.  And they either over charged me or they have the worlds most expensive oysters. Stay away.

I spent the day on Cape Fear and the only Pirates I saw was behind the desk of the dive Hotel I was booked into. And when Black Beard came out from the back room to check me in, she didn't seem too happy to see me. But I digress, this is a restaurant review.

Having a taste for seafood (coincidence? I think not), I dove past the two billboard advertised mega joints in Carolina Beach and headed to downtown Wilmington to the Dock Street Oyster. Why? Just look at the other Yelp reviews. Can all these people be wrong?

The Dock Street Oyster Bar is about one block north of the river in an old brick building that could have been a civil war factory, warehouse, etc. The place is narrow  with distressed brick walls and high rafter ceilings.  There are about a dozen tables inside and 6 more outside. The place is LOADED with character including the 3 man kitchen in the store front window.

And the food was great. I ordered the Steamer Platter for $20 which was loaded with large gulf shrimp, oysters, clams, mussels, snow crab, crawfish, redskins and corn on the cob. It was delish! [see the picture I posted].

This was one of the best seafood meals of my life. One I will not soon forget.

My only regret was that my college had to sit there, after he demolished his Jamaica Blackened Grouper, and watch me tear through shell after shell after shell. Do I feel guilty. No way, he made his choice.

So thank you Yelp for helping me find this place and avoiding the billboard plastered tourist traps.

Maybe I'm a spoiled Atlanta big city girl, but I'm really shocked at all the five stars reviews, especially when most places in Wilmington only have a few reviews - this place gets 18 and mostly 5 stars? Weird. Who knows, it could be the best seafood place in town, because there aren't as many as would be expected in a coastal town.

I think it's generally the mark of a potentially mediocre meal when the beer and food selection has changed and the menu has not been updated, but we saw all these great reviews so we were hoping for a good meal. We sat out on the sidewalk and people watched. The inside seemed pretty jam packed full of people in an uncomfortable way. I got the suburban coffee shop run by really well meaning friends vibe from the place.

To start out, after they were out of two beer selections I finally just gave in and ordered whatever the next beer she mentioned was. Luckily it was decent, but not worth my carbonation points. The specials looked good, so I got the shrimp and grits and Husband D. got the 1/2 lb of crawfish. The server said "Is that all?" in a tone that did not indicate she was concerned about our hunger levels, but that she was offended by the small order.

Our food came out in good time, the shrimp and grits were pretty good, but not the best I've ever had. There was quite a bit of "topping" compared to previous shrimp and grits offerings at other restaurants. The grits were inconsistent, some chewy, some creamy. And meat conscious people look out, there is sausage in the recipe.

The crawfish were edible, but only ok, pretty dry. Not a repeat. Several people walking by asked us about them and unfortunately we had to say "they're just ok". I think one of the staff overhead us giving the reviews because we started getting WAY overserviced. At least 4 different people came to our table and asked how everything was. It was super annoying, so we didn't order anything else or another drink and called it a meal.

Great selection of fresh oysters,  reasonably priced and several decent seafood specials.

This is a funky little place to go for reasonable priced seafood.
They have a daily board with a 'catch of the day' and other seafood specials.

I had the lobster & crab cakes, very good.
Others in our group of seven had the Mahi Mahi, scallops, blackened cat fish & shrimp with grits...all fresh, tasty and priced right.

The dozen oysters on the half shell are priced at $14 which is reasonable but the sizes aren't anything exceptional.

It's  a fun place, kind of small with a decent sized bar and several big screen plasmas scattered around. They have a small but professional wait staff and decent service for a small dining room.

It's on Front street near the waterfront...you'll park on the street or else park at a public garage and walk several blocks.

It's not a huge dining room and they don't take reservations so you'll have a wait if you go on a Fri or Sat nite during prime time.

This is my favorite place in Wilmington, for all kinds of reasons. Fresh catch of the day is always good. Great beer list. Great atmosphere. Friendly & efficient service.

The best part is the fact that a dozen raw oysters here are as good as any you can find in New England and they cost about 1/3 of the price you'd find here.

I adore Downtown Wilmington. It's got a mix of shops, great restaurants, trendy bars, sketchy bars, a strip club, street fairs. Love this city and love Dock St.

Like Jane H., I haven't been here often - just twice, while in Port City to visit in-laws.  The last time we were here, it was for lunch, but I don't remember it very well.  This time we came after a movie for a late-night snack and a beer.

The restaurant is very informal, with "island" décor - surfboards, license plates from the Dutch East Indies island of St. Maarten, etc.  And when we got there, of course, Jimmy Buffett was playing.  It was toward the end of the night, and the bartender was just starting to close down the bar, but she gave us great service.

I started with a Longboard lager, and my wife had a Yuengling lager, both served in Sam Adams Summer Ale glasses.  We had those almost immmediately which I liked.  My wife ordered a half pound of steamed shrimp, and the barkeep made sure to ask if she wanted Old Bay or not, saying that they go easy on the stuff when they put it on (which was true).  I ordered a half dozen raw oysters.

The presentation of the oysters surpassed that of the shrimp.  I was served a large plate of ice with 6 large oysters and a lemon slice, with plastic containers of horseradish and cocktail sauce - very inviting.  My wife's shrimp were in a bowl flanked by the same sauces, plus drawn butter.  By the time we were served I noticed that draft Guiness was available, so I ordered one to go with the oysters.  Good pour by the barkeep.

The shrimp were nicely done, came hot, and tasted great.  And the oysters, besides being large, were fresh and clean-tasting.  They went great with the Guinness.

All in all, this hit the spot and the price was right (about $12 for the shrimp and $7 for the oysters - total tab less than $35).  Would I go back?  Yes, I'll make a point the next time we're in town!

I love Dock Street! The seafood is always fresh, the assortment of beer is pretty good and the kitsy decor always makes me feel relaxed. My favorite items are the scallops, shrimp or the big boil platter to share with friends.

It's a small place that fills up quickly during peak times and like any downtown area, the parking is not easy but it is worth the trip.

I'm reluctant to give this place 5 stars after only a quick visit to grab a few dozen raw oysters en route to a wedding.

The oysters were delicious, fresh, and very fairly priced.  My bf thought they were even better than at the frou-frou Oceanaire back home in DC.  The accompanying horseradish sauce was firey and at times choke-inducing!  Our waitress was efficient and friendly, definitely a 5-star in the service category.

The decor is fun and funky, and very artsy.  I wish I could have gone back again before heading out to stay at the beach.

Only two small tables out front, so don't count on eating outside.

This is a great little seafood joint where everyone is super laid back and the food is good. They also have a great bar where the beer is cold- something that is greatly appreciated in the Southern heat.

The waitress was very nice, taking her time to ease my worries about ordering oysters in the summer months and explaining how the oysters were imported and would not kill me. I took her word for it and ordered a dozen raw shucked oyster platter. Mm mm... I'm glad I listened to her. The soup of the day was a Manhattan clam chowder with a tangy tomato base which was yummy. The pasta with clams was hearty and filling. The steamed black tiger shrimp were tender, spicy, and perfect.

My best restaurant experience in Wilmington.

The Dock St Oyster Bar's main appeal to me is the atmosphere. It has a Key West sort of feel to it, and has outside seating.

The food is good, but the menu is sparse and lacks variety. However, everything was well-prepared and tasty.

The shrimp burger is a total disappointment. The Oysters Rockefeller is very good, and the She Crab Soup was above average. I think Dock Street is a great place to take friends from out-of-town, but I rarely eat there.

Order the grilled chicken with lemon pepper. Chicken was good, broccoli had no flavor and the rice was dried out. My gf got the seafood heaven dish ( I think that's what it's called) and that had absolutely NO flavor!! Maybe their spice rack was locked and they lost the key.
The only good thing we got was the Soup of the day, the Mediterranean crab, that was very good and the only reason this place gets a star in my book.

If I was to ever go back, I would only get the steamers. As I was leaving the table next to me ordered them and they looked edible.

There is another oyster bar on the corner of Dock Street and Front Street.  The Dock Street bar is the smaller restaurant two doors down from Front Street.

We started with the horseradish and mustard muscles appetizer and felt that these muscles needed more horseradish.  For dinner, I tried the blackened tuna (rare) with cucumber dill sauce, rice, and vegetables.  The tuna and sauce were flavorful and the vegetables were steamed perfectly (still crunchy).  There were about 5 beers on draft, so I tried a pint of two different beers.  Our table also ordered pasta with catfish (the fish of the day),  house salad, vegetarian pasta, and mahi rockefeller with potatoes and a corn cob.  All meals were very good (at least what I tasted).  We also tried the very tasty key lime pie.

After seeing the reviews on Yelp I thought I'd give it a try.  This was a Tuesday night and I almost spent more time finding a parking place then eating.  One I got there it wasn't crowded so I had a choice of seating.  The special's menu looked interesting so I chose the Scicilian Seafood Pasta (hold the calamari).  The portion was enormus. The ingredients were fresh and the dish was very tasty.  I had a trainee for a server so she constantly was checking on me.  She forgot to ask me if I wanted desert but I was full anyway.

Every now and then I have a dining experience that is not just bad, not just disappointing, but that continues to make me mad for days.  My dinner at Dock Street Oyster Bar this past weekend was one such experience.

At the outset, I want to say that I don't write this without careful thought.  I appreciate that restaurants are hard to run, and that bad reviews are bad for business.  But I'm not wealthy, so when I put good money down for a meal and get served crap, I feel robbed.  That's even more true when the deficiencies are obviously known to the owners and managers of the restaurant.

Anyway, we went here with a couple of friends during a trip to the shore.  It looked like a cool place, and the Yelp reviews were mostly positive (which I can't understand, by the way.  Were those good reviews for real?).

We sat down, got a few beers (decent selection, good to average prices on drinks), and the waitress fielded our questions.  She said that the crusted haddock special was extremely popular, so both of our friends got that.  One also got the mussels special of the day, which involved a habanero pepper sauce.  My wife and I ordered the steamer platter for two.  This platter looks really impressive when you see it at other tables (it comes with crab legs, crawfish, shrimp, oysters, mussels, clams, corn, and potatoes).  My wife also got this shrimp curry soup.

The soup and the mussels special arrived first.  The soup was gloppy and nearly inedible.  There was certainly no appropriate curry seasoning in it.  The mussels were a HUGE disappointment.  This is when I started to realize that something was terribly wrong with this place, and I'll get to the basic problem in a minute.  Back to the mussels.  They were not served as most of us are used to (P.E.I. Mussels in a pot or bowl in the sauce they were steamed in).  Instead, these were previously frozen green mussels (sometimes called NZ Green Lipped Mussels), the type that you can find dirt cheap in the freezer at your local Asian food mart.  When you buy them at the Asian market, they often come frozen on the half shell, so they're basically about as far from fresh and unprocessed as can be.  To make these already mediocre mussels even more terrible, Dock Street served them on a plastic plate, on the half shell, with little glops of a somewhat sweet but not spicy at all sauce (where was the habanero?).  They were very dry and rubbery.  Disgusting.

So then our friends' haddock entrees came, and when we finally started opening up to each other about how bad the food was, they admitted that they were basically choking it down, and that it was barely edible.  It certainly didn't look good at all.

So on to our steamer platter.  It came out looking pretty awesome, except I realized that they used the same gross green mussels for the platter.  The oysters were not bad, except that about half of them were old oysters that opened while being steamed and had that funny old taste.  Sticking to the good closed oysters reduced the number of edible oysters by half.  The clams were okay.  The crab legs were pretty good.  The crawfish were previously frozen and were awful, just terrible.  They just tasted dirty and mealy.  The shrimp was not as terrible, but it would have been nice if they had cleaned them.  The potatoes were . . . potatoes.  The corn was overboiled to the point where it came off the cob in a gelatinous mess.

So midway through this meal, I realized what this place was all about.  Dock Street Oyster Bar is located a stone's throw from piers where boats are bringing in some of the best, most fresh seafood in the world.  You look at the restaurant, and you might think that they're cooking up some of that good stuff inside.  That's what lures you in.  But in reality, what they serve is frozen garbage from halfway around the world.  I've already gone over the mussels, but I'm convinced the crawfish were farmed and frozen from China.  The haddock had to be frozen.  And you know what the catch of the day was on the menu?  It was catfish, which, at restaurants, is nearly universally sourced from catfish farms.

Despite the incredible bounty at its back door, Dock Street serves cheap frozen foreign-sourced garbage.  They might as well be serving fish sticks.

This is a horrible restaurant, and if our visit was an indication of their everyday quality, I hope they close down before they dupe too many more rubes like me.

EPILOGUE EDIT:  The day after I posted this review, a new five-star review was posted for Dock Street by a "Yelper" (Melissa H.) with no previous review history.  The reviewer purported to have eaten at Dock Street over Memorial Day weekend (which is when I went) and wrote that they had ordered the haddock special, and that it was probably the best piece of fish they ever had (preposterous) and that the steamer plate was twice as good as it looked (ridiculous).  This was obviously a post by the owners or friends of the owners.  Lame.

I tried the crab melt which was pretty delicious. My husband ordered the mahi mahi but the waitress put in the wrong order, so he had to wait longer for his food. She dealt with it by giving it to him for free which was nice. The mahi mahi was very tender and fresh. This place has pretty funky decor and is a laid back place to visit. They have specials on well drinks for only $3 which is a great value.

Given the limited selection of options for dinner on a Sunday night, this wasn't a bad choice, although I'd have to say stick to the fried, steamed, broiled seafood offerings.  The jambalaya was woefully short on sausage, somewhat bland and runny and the sesame ginger seafood pasta while flavorful was rather meager in the seafood content.  It was a little too early for local steamed oysters and their oysters rockefeller and florentine preparations were pedestrian at best.  Not bad for the price and the big platters of steamed crab, mussels and shrimp looked fine.

A really good sea food restaurant, with a nice, laid back vibe.  My girlfriend and I went here after a full day at the beach after I read some good reviews about it on Yelp.   We were promptly seated, waited on, and served.  Everything we had was fresh, and cooked just right.  Especially liked the steamed shrimp.  They may look a little pricey for 24 of them, but they hit the spot for two hungry people as a appetizer...  I will make it a point to eat here when I'm in Wilmington in the future.

The absolute best Oysters Rockefeller I've ever had.  Crab legs are delicious too.

The food was pretty good, but I think a bit pricey. I was surprised how very small the place was! I would probably go here again if someone else wanted to, but it wouldn't be one of my top choices.

I cannot understand why most people have given this restaurant five stars. My husband and I were recently looking for a good seafood place and I saw that Dock Street had received very good reviews so I was so excited to go. I ordered the steamed oysters which were served with clarified butter and cocktail sauce. They were ok, nothing special. My one complaint is that they were covered in dirt. It seems like if you are going to serve oysters in the shell you should a least scrub them up a little before serving them. There was dirt all over the plate and my hands from opening the shells. It was actually pretty gross. My husband got some kind of pasta with shrimp and alfredo sauce. I tasted it and it was alright, not too different from some of those frozen dishes you buy premade from the supermarket. So over all our meals were pretty bland and we were both disappointed.

This is the best restaurant in Wilmington, in my opinion.  Extremely friendly service and OUTSTANDING food!  Very healthy options available.  LOVED IT and recommend to anyone who loves seafood.

I ordered sesame ginger shrimp with rice. It was pretty tasty but the shrimp wasn't local. Local shrimp may be out of season or something--not sure. I was still sort of hungry afterwards, but my friend got their catch of the day and was absolutely stuffed. The drinks are pretty cheap and the service is very good. Might check it out again next time I'm in the area.

Visiting from California, went to Yelp to find best seafood restaurant in area.  This was the clear choice. There must be no competition because this place is the Rockport of restaurants - comfortable, affordable, but bland and uninteresting.  We started with some appetizers - family had calamari, not fried.  Basically, it tasted like steamed calamari dressed by bottled tomato sauce; nothing interesting here.  I had raw oysters.  I didn't get sick, but other than that can't say anything positive.  The main thing I want with raw oysters is to taste of the ocean, but there was no ocean to be found on these shells.  They had no flavor.  The waitress, a very friendly soul, was a little clueless.  She could not answer my questions about the sweetness or dryness of certain wines, and which fish was local.  It's a seafood restaurant in a coastal town!  I settled on the "catch of the day," grouper, blackened.  It wasn't bad, but a little dry.  The corn on the cob was way over-cooked and soggy.  The rice was uninspiring to say the least.  I won't go on, but the seafood pastas the others had were mediocre.  I didn't hate this place; the prices are good and the atmosphere is friendly, but I was really hoping to have some good, down home seafood with flavor and character and I felt this place did not deliver.  I might return for lunch and try one of their fish sandwiches.

My wife and I have frequented Dock St. Oyster bar for the past three years and have loved going into Wilmington just for lunch there. My favorite dish is the tuna rolls. My wife nearly always orders grilled tuna and it is always done as rare as she likes. The steamed veggies and roasted potatoes are always done just right. Their seafood is always fresh tasting. The staff is very accommodating and pleasant and then there are those beer and drink specials!!!! We highly recommend that you try it.
