Like fire, motorcycles are beautiful, mesmerizing, useful, and capable of messing you up but good.

Unlike fire, most people aren't educated from earliest childhood how to handle motorcycles. And motorcycles aren't particularly forgiving or easy to handle. That's why in Japan to get a license for motorcycles 400 CCs and above (pretty much the only kind sold here) you take a test with a pass rate of around 5%, and in France and Germany you need at least a year of experience on smaller bikes and to pass a hard test. Here, you take a three day just-enough-knowledge-to-be-dangerous course and you are welcome to any bike you can make the easy monthly payments on. No wonder bikes have such a bad safety rep.

OK, you'd like to improve your skills, what to do? Here in the Bay Area, no problem. Just head over to Doc Wong's free street riding clinics. That's right, free.

The clinics start with at 8:30AM with a talk at Doc Wong's clinic in Redwood city on what ever the topic for that day happens to be, say body position or cornering. You learn a couple of techniques, attendees then divide into groups of similar skill (and don't worry, there are always people of all levels) and, with a group leader, go out on a ride over beautiful skyline boulevard and put into practice whatever skils taught earlier that day. Doc also does first aid, off road and maintenance workshops, all also free.

I've been going on-and-off for a couple of years and can promise you there is no hidden agenda, though your name may wind up on the mailing list of Doc's medical practice (which boasts MDs and DCs).  The clinics are great fun, a good chance to meet people, ride some beautiful roads and, most important, gain skills you need to avoid being burned.

I've done the Doc's Dual Sport/ Offroad clinic 3 times, and I get better every time. They are well organized, fun, free, and you get your a$$ kicked into riding better than you could learning on your own. I've been riding for over 20 years, and I am better than ever thanks to Doc. BTW riding in Clear Creek is incredible. Goooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I ride street, offroad, and anywhere and everywhere...I ride safely and with confidence. Thanks Doc!

On top of that he knows his stuff in his area of expertise...healthcare!

WOW
I have wanted to do this ride for a long time and it was everything I expected it to be.  This is not a sunday ride with some buds. This is a chance to expand your skills and learn that will keep the rubber side down.

The crowd is huge and the roads are challenging, but it is worth the time and effort.
