Our second visit to Dobbes was this past weekend (8/12/11) for a winemakers dinner with a menu provided by tina's (excellent food and well paired with the wine, but this review is about Dobbes). I think their wines are great...and I think part of the reason is that we always enjoy the people there. Charles, the marketing person does an outstanding job of making people feel welcome, imparting some information without being overbearing, and just giving you the feeling that these people all love their work. Joe Dobbes is a very personable, interesting guy whose presence lent a special touch to the dinner, which was held in one of the barrel rooms. It was an excellent evening, and we're already looking forward to our next trip up there and another visit to Dobbes. The wine is very good...but I can't help but think that a big part of our enjoyment of the Dobbes wines is the hospitality we're shown when we visit.

This ended up being our first stop and our favorite winery this last weekend (Memorial Day). Favorite HANDS DOWN.
Service was incredibly friendly and knowledgable.
The tasting room was inviting and warm, not stuffy and full of arrogant oenophile assholes. Just good people tasting delicious wine in what apparently used to be part of a lumber mill office.
The woman helping us was just so.....awesome. I tried to tip her even, on account of her extensive knowledge and friendly demeanor and she wouldn't let me!
Oh man, and their Estate Select (?) syrah was absolutely delicious. I've never dropped over $30 on a bottle of wine in my adult life and I did for the first time last weekend. WORTH IT. It's now sitting on my wine rack, winking at me until I come up with an appropriate dinner menu to showcase it.
Please visit this place! We went to another winery in the area (very large and slightly commerical; everybody knows this place if you buy wine at Costco) and were not nearly as impressed as we were with Dobbes. Friendly people, and downright insanely delicious wines. Inspiring, even. -

Great pinot noirs and offerings across the price spectrum.
The service was excellent. -

They might not have the views as some of the other area wineries, but they definitely make up for that in the quality of wine and character of the staff. It was a pleasure all around to visit the Dobbs Winery.

This tasting room is awesome and the staff is so friendly!!! Believe it or not they actually have a port which not many Oregon vineyards offer. I would go back to this place in a heartbeat!!

Wineries should not be closing at 5:00. That is just ridiculous and the Dobbes Family (all of 'em) agree with me and keep their tasting room open to 6:00 PM. Hurrah!
You can, of course, taste their namesake wines but you can also sample a flight of their new label, Wines by Joe. Definitely try the pinot blanc, even if you don't like white wines; you just might be tempted to pick up a couple of these surprisingly delicious $12 bottles.
Plus, it's not like you have anything else to do after 5:00.Listed in: Oregon Wine Country

This was not the nicest of all the wineries, but I think this is were we had the most fun.
Our server was very knowledgeable, but more than that, she was very genuine. She didn't have that hint of arrogance that some of the previous servers had.
The Viognier had some balls. Definitely a wine that has an awesome kick of testosterone.
O.k. I know that's not the right terminology or a way to describe a wine. But this is a great wine that continues to blossom in your palate.
We bought 6 bottles between the five of us.Listed in: Wines on the Road

A staff member at our hotel, the Allison Inn, had recommended Dobbes Family Estate as her "favorite" winery by far. Based on her recommendation and positive Yelp reviews, we decided to visit the tasting room. Boy, are we glad we did! The grounds are so pretty and relaxing, like from a storybook, complete with a babbling brook and small bridge over it. We walked in and a larger group was tasting wine, which could've been intimidating for first-timers like us, but Jessica (staff member in the tasting room) was wonderful, informative, and so welcoming! She made our experience there fantastic. She even told us we didn't have to whisper because of the group, which made us feel more relaxed. When we later asked if she had samples of the Wine by Joe Pinot Noir, she opened a bottle and said, "I do now!" We bought a bottle of the Dobbes Family Estate 2007 Pinot Noir for $28 and felt it was just about the best wine we've ever had. We bought some more Dobbes Family Estate 2008 Pinot Noir at the airport before we left town and couldn't have been happier with both wines. All of the wines were of top quality and tasted great. We hope to order more wines online soon. I was also impressed with Joe Dobbes' story; he gave up pursuing a career in medicine to learn about making wine (important to follow your passion!), and he gives to charities including a suicide prevention organization.
This was the only winery we visited, as we also were worried we'd be disappointed visiting anywhere else after our great experience here. -

This is our favorite winery. Hands down. We first stared going because it's the latest one open and if you have ever headed to the central coast through Newberg on a Friday... you know what I mean. Buuuuuuut... after just a couple visits, we decided to become members.
They have delicious wines for any price range ($12-$65ish). The most laid back friendly atmosphere and incredibly knowledgeable wine experts! -

I don't know that much about wine. I just know what I do and don't like when I taste it.
Wine by Joe is a good place for those of us who are trying to expand our wine knowledge. The place is not a fancy winery. They cut out all the frilly stuff to keep costs down. It's very laid back and the staff is easy going and informative. They answered our questions and encouraged our wine curiosity.
They offer free samplings, and like Michelle B. pointed out, they are open until 6:00pm. We picked up a bottle of the "Really Good" 2007 Pinot Noir. When you are happily sampling your free tasting you can also try the Dobbes estate wine. This is the wine to get if you like the fancy schmancy wines. I found the 2005 Griffin's Cuvee Pinot Noir especially pleasing.
In conclusion, Dobbes/Wine by Joe is a great way to wine down your day of tastings and pick up some good bottles and prices. -

Oh my. I loved this place. We did have this as our 2nd stop on our wine tour- first stop having tasted 14 wines, Dobbes was already going to look good.
It was a beautiful Sept. day and we sat outside at a big table since there were 10 of us. We had the most charming server, Charles, and he took great care of us! We tasted (I think) around 6 wines at the table- mixing up between Dobbes and Wines by Joe. The wines were wonderful! I've done the Napa thing and really, Oregon Pinot Noir is incredible, especially at Dobbes.
Charles then took us on a tour and really had some great history to share. He was a great leader and again, really entertained 10 tipsy 25 year old girlfriends!
I bought a $65 dollar of reserve dobbes pinot noir....on a young professionals budget. So, that tells you that 1. they sufficiently got me tipsy and 2. the wine was good enough to splurge on!
Plus, Charles then met us for lunch at the Farm and the Fork (or something, but another GREAT spot) and he was still wonderful :)
I think I have a crush!
