They have an okay selection of music. If you're Korean though, they have a pretty good selection, I believe. The staff are really nice. The prices are reasonable if you have people to go with you, but if you don't, it can really be costly.

The rooms are small and the TVs are small as well. It can get really hot inside if everyone is going crazy with energy. I have higher expectations since it's in Japantown, but regardless, if you're bored and it's late and you're in the area, DoReMi is a fun place to go.

The good: Several private karaoke rooms, a wide selection of top hits in a variety of languages (including many current Top 40 hits), good sound systems and a really reasonable price--only $30 per hour for a room with six people. Plus, they have a healthy supply of toy tambourines and drums if you decide that you really want to get into it.

The bad: The rooms are a bit small, the TV could be larger, and the facilities aren't exactly the most pristine.

The ugly: No alcohol (who the hell does karaoke sober?) and no food (a problem when you have the munchies and most food spots in Japantown are closed after 10pm). Luckily, if you BYOB and do at least a somewhat good job of keeping it hidden, staff will likely to pretend not to notice.

All I wanted in a private karaoke room. Cheap-ish, open late, dark & dingy with an amusing selection of mid 90s-hits.

The crew went wild for "Hunger Strike." Dancing on the tiny center table, and so forth.

Killer!

Don't get me wrong, I think singing karaoke in private rooms with your friends is fun. Lots of fun. My biggest gripe with this place is the piss-poor selection of songs. And I'm not talking about obscure songs, or the latest Radiohead... I'm talking about a lack of simple classic pop songs. Valerie by Steve Winwood. Nope. Kiss is on my List by Hall and Oates. Nope. Down Under by Men at Work. Nope. I just wanted to sing a few crappy 80s tracks but every song I looked for just wasn't there.

It also sucks that you can only search by song title, not artist. So if you know you want to sing a Michael Jackson song but you're not sure which one, you can't just browse. You need to specifically know what song you want to sing.

You're not supposed to drink alcohol but to be honest you can. The fact that they don't really care (or they just turn a blind eye) is actually quite good as it makes the evening much cheaper than if they had a bar and you had to buy your drinks.

All in all, you can have fun in this place, but I've been to much better Karaoke clubs before. Unfortunately San Francisco just doesn't have many so this place will have to do for now...

Typical Asian style karaoke parlor with private rooms, binders of songs, and remote control system.  It seems Korean-run, and was somewhat limited in Japanese and OK English song selection with a section on new songs.

Make a reservation for your room as they seem to fill up.  If you are late, they will also cancel your reservation on the dot, so be sure get there or call if you will not make it.  There are signs for 'no alcohol' though looked pretty easy to BYO.

One of few places with Karaoke like back in Japan, but because of that, they don't need to do much to compete.  It feels dirty and cheap, but they charge prices like right across street from Shinjuku station.  However, Doremi is shitamachi Oosaka.  They don't even have Misora Hibari Omatsuri Mambo!  A classic must-have song.  Also, where is Hamasaki Ayumi BEST medley?  I cannot find.

Last, where is alcohol?

Still, when I feel homesick, I go to Doremi to sing sing sing like Teresa Ten.  I miss Harajuku...

We all cabbed it over to Japan town after dinner to exercise our vocal chops. Lost my voice but had a great time in the process!
(+) All song lyrics are in English & are actually correct!!!
Music was as close as you could get to the song
Musical instruments provided
They take reservations
Inexpensive
(-) Rating/score keeper broken
Remote control only works if you point it directly at the machine
No alcohol

Do Re Mi Fa So...oh man..you gotta come here blasted

fyi: you cannot judge a place on how much fun it provides you...rather..it is the company you keep that makes it fun...and last night was pretty unreal

i've never been to a karaoke place before and i warned the attendant that if there was a large throng of people outside supplicating or having their ear to the door, that it was a normal occurrence and let them be....

the rad thing about this place is that it closes at 5 so when you are properly liquoured up until 2 a.m. of last call, there is still a place where you can dick around.  we were drinking at a nearby hole which was something out of a dream.  we were led by a butler in a red vest through a kitchen into a den bar down below....it was quite sketchy and we could have been slaughtered.  anyways, do re mi is a pretty chill place...they put up with you no matter how blasted you are.  being witty often helps tho.  we reserved a room in advance.  what ensued in that room borderlines on madness.  when you have a motley crew teetering on the brink of insanity.....

we were stomping on the tables, couches, punching disco balls, kicking furniture over.  it was like the backstage of a rock show minus the groupies.  what came out our throats weren't even the sweet serene melodies i am accustomed too...just gutteral screams that left all of us hoarse.  We were just screaming at the tv....jigging, square dancing...peeing in garbage cans....truly unreal night.  i am sure they have cameras inside and were totally good human beings to not kick us out.

to sum it up, a karaoke bar is definitely a good idea to hit up only if you are totally shitfaced.  shitfaced=you think you are invincible like lou furigno.  there is also ample space outside of the place where you can play leapfrog and bowl into unsuspecting victims...

--cheap if you have a large party; pretty downzo in that they won't kick you out; pretty big room to shag and sing if that's what you want too

If you like Korean music, this is truly the place for you. The English selection is pretty good, but not as up-to-date as other place probably are. There's music from everywhere. Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Thai, Tagalog and more. I haven't seen their playbooks, but the Korean one is definitely the largest!

The prices are pretty good if you come with a group. $20, $40, $50 for small, large, and VIP respectively before 7PM. Then everything's raised $10 I think. The small room just fits 4 to sit in. Large 6-8. VIP probably 12-16, maybe more depending how much room you want to use for dancing along. The lights in the room are a little dim because of a colored disco ball which is nice but not too noticeable. The owners are pretty nice and a lenient about timing. Staying 10 minutes later is usually okay.

You can hear people in the rooms next to you because the speakers are so loud and the rooms are so close to each other, but once you started playing YOUR music, you couldn't hear anything else. The microphone scoring doesn't work, and the mics are wired to the machine. It stretches pretty far though. A good plan is to have one person singing while another looks for songs and inputs them to save as the next song to sing. Then you'll have nonstop singing and really get your money's worth. Bring LOTS of water because your voice WILL get tired! Two hours is the ideal amount of time before you start getting woozy. Three hours and all you'l only be singing slow songs.

The place is kind of mediocre, but in San Francisco, it's the best you'll probably get for Korean Pop!

Like all Karaoke places, Do Re Mi is what you make of it. If you are there to have a good time, then you will. I'm giving an extra star because we missed our reservation by 45 minutes and they were nice enough to squeeze us in.

pros
private room
you can sneak in drinks
friendly staff

cons
TV and setup are ol school
remote control kept acting up
sound quality wasn't great
need more current songs
messy bathroom

It's fun to come with friends, but sorry, the place is disgustingly dirty. I've never noticed it before but the carpets are gross, the mikes are dirty and it just feels like it needs a good cleaning. They do have a good selection of music, but it can be pricey.

i think this place was pretty good.
it didnt look that great from the outside, but the inside was actually a lot better than i thought.

-if you go in a group, the price is really good.
-they had recent songs.
-rooms were big.
-and you can bring in alcohol.. kinda. we brought some in and had it on the table in the karaoke room. they saw it and told us that if they SEE it again then they will have to throw it out, so we just left it under the table and they didn't bother us after that.
-the remote was kinda hard to use. you have to point directly at the machine or it won't work at all.

parking is kinda hard but we still managed to find a spot in like 5 minutes. it's like any other korean karaoke place.

The best thing about this place was the pug puppy we played with at the front counter.

The worst thing was that our remote controller pad was faulty, which was a big time sink. We called a dude in to aid us with it-- he jabbed the numbers with it right up in front of the machine and looked at us with that "girls can't aim" gleam in his eye.

Also the mics sucked.

Asians love Karaoke, as evidenced by the abundance of Asian Karaoke joints around the world.  Where you will find Asians, you will find Karaoke.  Karaoke isn't restricted to Japan, or China, it is a cross cultural Asian phenomenon.  Perhaps it is because we are taught to be quiet and demure as children.  Karaoke is a great opportunity to be loud and boisterous.

I remember being a little girl in Thailand and singing a version of 'The Greatest Love' of All by Whitney Houston with my crush.  He was eighteen and I was twelve.  Oh the fond memories of an off pitch serenade.  Fellas, if you want to get a lady to love you, what better declaration than humiliating yourself by singing her a tune?

Another time at Universal Studios, my mom and I donned matching outfits and sang two Madonna songs, and took home a video of it as a souvenir.  We were real performers.

When I was a kid, we had a great home stereo where you could record your voice over popular songs on tape.  You could take a Fleetwood Mac tape and use the music for your own version, Fleetwood Apple.  Or Apple Mac, but that is a computer.  I would make tapes of myself singing Carly Simon songs and pretend I was in a recordings studio.

Unlike white people, we Asians aren't exhibitionists.  This is why you will often find us in Karaoke places like Do Re Mi studio, where you can sing in your own private room with your friends.  Hidden talents are often displayed in these places.  You may have a real Celine Dion on your hands, a friend you never knew could sing.  Or you may have a friend who is a screaming cat.  Either way it is confined to the privacy of your own room.  What happens in Karaoke, stays in Karaoke.

Another great benefit of these places is that you can sing an abundance of songs without disturbance from the other bar patrons on a bender.  You can pick as many songs as you want without having to wait your turn.  Every turn is your turn.  Madonna?  Bon Jovi?  50 cent?  They've got everything.  Perfect for the avid singer.

How many times have you been to the Mint and suffered through endless renditions of 'I Will Survive'  or 'Brown Eyed Girl?'  Who really wants to see people they don't know screaming into a microphone and doing odd dance routines with their friends?  The only time this was fun was on our company ski trip where my male coworker put on a Madonna wig and paraded around singing 'Like a Virgin.'  Unless you are prepared to be really funny, Karaoke is probably best kept in the confines of a room.

This place is open til the wee hours of the morning.  It's always a fun night so rest up your voices and come on over and sing a Do Re Mi.  Or a Fa So La Ti.

I used to really love coming to Do Re Mi.  It was one of the first Karaoke places I'd been to, had a great selection of songs, and was in a decent location.

Fast forward 15 years, and Do Re Mi hasn't changed at all.  It's the same freakin' thing, and that's bad.  I've been to a lot of Karaoke joints decked out with flat screen TV's, full bar and room service, and three times the song list.  Do Re Mi has fallen behind the times.

I don't really want to have to smuggle in my liquor.  Nor do I want to find myself cramped in a room with 8 people for a room that's really suited for four after we already made reservations, reading the lyrics off a paltry 20-inch CRT.

If you're into karaoke, save your time, take your money, and go someplace else.  I don't think I'm ever coming back.

Imagine you're in a small room with four other people.  At first, you're sitting idly, thinking that if you took a black light to the couches and carpet, you would never come back to Do Re Mi Music Studio.

But then, all of a sudden, the light hits you, you're an American Idol Contestant, and you blast the words "Black Velvettttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt" over everyone's ears.

Then there's a calm, "Like A Prayer" makes you humbled, but "Sunday Bloody Sunday" wants to make you kill yourself.  And then, no one knows the fast-paced beat of "The Thong Song," however, at the last moments of ill-fated looming death, the finale of "Mambo No. 5" hits you.

Karaoke joints don't have a difficult time pleasing me.  But it would be nice if the microphones worked once in a while.  Minus one star for the faulty mics!!

Other than that this place is cool.  Been here for a couple of birthdays and good times were always had by all.  The last time I went, there was only one room left and we squeezed 11 of us into this closet-sized room but we just rocked out all the more.

Okay selection of songs.. would have liked a little more RHCP though.  I'm realizing more and more how out of touch I'm becoming with current music trends.  Who is Leona Lewis???  What happened to the 90's??  WHERE AM I??

One more thing: if you're the lone Chinese guy in a group full of Koreans be prepared for plenty of k-rapping that you don't understand.

This place rocks! The people who work here are super nice and chill. I love coming here and it's amazing for pre-partying before dancing later.

FYI, they used to have an amazing music collection. Now, they barely have any Diana Ross and the Supremes OR Hall & Oates. I know. How can you call yourself a karaoke joint without them?!!! I had practiced my Diana Ross and Hall & Oates songs all weekend in preparation for my chance to show the world (ie, my friends in the karaoke booth) my talents. Words can't quite capture my shattered dreams.

Do Re Mi--- get back your full Hall & Oates and Diana Ross collection!!!!  For realz!!!!

With almost unlimited song selections (later on when we were heading out I realized that they even had Russian songs... uh...), Do Re Mi is the perfect avenue to unleash your inner rocker chick, gangsta rapper, lycra / spandex-tight-sportin' 80's bombshell, and of course, the closet American Idol in all of us.

The plastic-covered remote control with myriad of brightly-colored buttons  with Korean writing may seem intimidating at first, but once you've mastered it (thanks to the friendly proprietor who was never hesitant in giving us a 5-minute crash course in karaoke machine operation), the world (or at least, the private room that is yours for two hours) is your oyster.

And... they have that song by Meredith Brooks.  PM me for the title.

I heart Do Re Mi.

Your standard, run-of-the-mill Karaoke spot in Japan Town.

Pros: private rooms, good selection of songs, opens late, good service.

Cons: mike quality not as good as other places, shady characters walking around at 2am, random people coming in your room mid-song (altho' that can be funny), a little on the $$ side.

I didn't get to try the Chinese songs as I was with my English only crowd... would be interested to see what their Chinese song selection is like.

All in all, we still had a ton of fun and would go again.

I've had some great times at Do Re Mi.  There were the times we did all-you-can-drink @ Cafe Mums then stumbled over.  There was the time we came a bit before the bars closed and stayed until 7 in the morning.  Do Re Mi was only the second place I have ever done karaoke, and it seemed amazing until I went to the third, fourth and fifth karaoke places.  Those places aren't in SF, two are in NYC and one is in Atlanta, but in comparison to those places Do Re Mi doesn't seem like the best value.  I think it's a 2.5-star kinda place.

First off, there's the song list.  The English song list, despite getting several new songs every month, seems like it wasn't that expansive to begin with.  At first I figured oh, these songs I want just haven't been made for karaoke yet, but after seeing many of these songs in NYC I realized that's just not true.

There's also the equipment.  Even the biggest room, meant to fit like 12-15 people, has you reading off a 20 or 24 " CRT screen.  What the hell?  The other places I've been have huge lcd screens in even the smallest rooms.  The lighting has also been messed up before, although the remotes, players and mics (most important parts) have always worked fine.  The decor of the rooms is pretty weak too, although that's by far the least important part.

I like that Do Re Mi stays open late, but don't like that they don't serve alcohol and that their prices are pretty high.  I'll still be coming back, because there aren't many options for private room karaoke in SF, but I hope that Do Re Mi either does an overhaul or that some competition opens up soon.

A decent private room/asian style karaoke option in J-town.

Had originally booked Playground, which is as far as I know, the only asian style karaoke place that legally serves alcohol in SF. But with a $20 minimum per person charge in addition to the $30/hr room fee, we switched to Do Re Mi as we had a few non-drinkers.

We got the big room (up to 12 people) for $60 an hour. Not too bad, but I believe more expensive than Fillmore Karaoke which was the option (it was booked by the time I called).

The English song selection is decent, with some new stuff e.g. "Single Girls", some unexpected stuff "Paranoid Android", and the obligatory karaoke classics like "Livin' on a Prayer".

Re: the drink situation, yes you can sneak stuff in. Beer is obviously hard due to it's volume. They used to give you plastic cups which made mixing drinks easy but now you just get cans which means you have to do some ghetto mixing of hard liquor in your $2 can of coke. The easiest thing to do is show up drunk anyways, so that you don't waste time while people are too shy to start singing :)

One thing I really liked is that remote control had English translations on it and was super easy to use. I swear I've wasted half an hour of singing time at other places trying to decipher something which looks more like it should control the Korean Starship Enterprise, rather than play a song on a TV.  Sadly the "scoring" wasn't working. I guess it doesn't really matter as your score seems directly correlated to volume anyways rather than correct pitch.

I think Playground is still a better option if you are going with drinkers and want to eat food (they have a telephone you can use in the room to order food/drinks with - v cool!). But if you're not planning to drink then Do Re Mi or Fillmore Karaoke are decent options.

Sure, everybody kept stealing the mics from Nicky T and I when Limp Bizkit songs came on, but singing karaoke here was buckets of fun.

Like Elvis?! (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) in Huntington Beach, you bring your own supply of booze. But unique to Do Re Mi, they pour your whiskey in covert Vitamin Water bottles for your Prohibition-like enjoyment.

4 stars. I'm still butthurt we couldn't finish singing "Break Stuff".

$20...really?!??! 1 hour here is enough to make you sound like a lifetime smoker, or a really bad version of Bryan Adams....either way, your voice and your wallet is lightened.

The rooms are kinda janky...cause you can hear someone else down the hall...but when you're wickedly tipsy and belting out to Pink's So What...all is good.

Their selection is not really categorized by artists but just songs...so if you want to sing something from The Pretenders, you gotta skim through a lot of stuff to get there.

Nice portions of korean, japanese, and chinese...can't read any of it but still good to know they have something for my ethnic sisters (MA and co...)

Be warned, there have been songs known to have caused lit cig lighter swaying syndrome...be prepared.

I cannot sing. In fact, I was once booed off of the stage in a bar in San Jose's Japantown. It was a little embarrassing and I vowed never to sing karaoke again.

Do Re Mi has allowed me to change that vow. Since it is a private room with just friends, I can sing whatever I want with no worries of utter humiliation. Whose friends don't love when you scream out "oh-OH, Livin' on a Praaaayer" at the top of your lungs?

The staff was super friendly both over the phone and when we came in.
The "no alcohol policy" translates to BYOB, no glass, and be a little sly about it. C'mon, even amongst friends I need to be drunk!

So much better than it's more popular counterpart over in Japantown that rhymes with "shmayground."  Usually able to accommodate a party pretty quickly even on a busy Saturday night.  The music selection is good and the prices are normal.  I do always end up having a good time here but usually only when I'm able to sneak in alcohol.  Oh yeah, they don't serve alcohol and they don't allow it.  And what I mean by they don't allow it is that they'll come by and tell you to put your nasty handle of skyy under the table instead of on top of it in plain view.

All in all, a fine place to kareoke and better than most of your other options in the area.

We come here for the special b-day occasion and have been in the small room and the larger "vip" room. Both have the disco ball and colored lighting to make you look as cool as your feel.

In the last few years I've seen them update their English music selection - which is awesome. You have your standard songs plus the latest that Greg and Fernando pump out in the morning.

woman womanizer your a womanizer ah ah yeah . . .

uhm, bring foods and drinks and don't be an ass and you'll be well taken care of. The small room was $30 per hour and we got a heads up when it was time to leave so no overtime. All in all a decent spot to throw a party.

I love singing but for some reason I've never been karaokeing before.  I've played Karaoke Revolution and sang in Rock Band, but I've never been to a karaoke establishment.  Until last week...

Do Re Mi was amazing and a perfect introduction to Karaoke.  We had a rather small group, only five singers, but that meant more mic time, which was fine by me...  We brought in some beer and stayed for about 2.5 hours singing and dancing our way through:  We Built this City on Rock'n'Roll (Jefferson Starship), Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now (Starship), The Glory of Love (Peter Cetera), On Bended Knee (Boyz II Men), Take a Bow (Madonna) and many, many others.

Do Re Mi can get a little pricey, but it's fun and unlike other karaoke joints, you're guaranteed mic time.  They also have a pretty solid song selection and we were able to find every song we were looking to sing.  Two recommendations though, make a reservation and bring beer and snacks, all that intense karaokeing is bound to work up some appetites.

We usually come here after the clubs to get a little more "party" on... Overall typical asian karaoke place.. more asian songs than english; however, they did have a few current hits like poker face (no, i didn't sing that haha). Private rooms, ample seating in the rooms, and tables to accommodate a lot of bottles of water that we smuggle in (what else would you drink after 2am? beer? HAHA) So.. good place to come kick it and get your song on...

Revisiting those old high school and early college day's loved this place. So many fond and at times awkward memories. I love to sing and so I was also the first one in line to suggest going karaoke. This place has a great selection of songs, including Japanese and Korean.

Only thing I have to complain about is that they don't enforce the "No Smoking" policy which is LAW in California. It also makes it difficult for those of us with allergies and asthma to enjoy ourselves. Plus, since when do smoking and singing go hand in hand? Have these people ever heard of second hand smoke which they are causing their non smoking clients (who might I add just want to sing without worrying about losing their lungs) will be affected by it.

And so is the reason I have not been back in a very long time. It's a crying shame of you ask me!

Really, really needs more songs.  Isn't that what karaoke's about?  The english song book was less than an inch thick, southbay karaoke songs have a far more comprehensive list.  The fact it's not in artist name order irks me too, because it makes things complicated if you have a bunch of songs you want to sing from your favorite artist.  These are common complaints for most karaoke joints tho.

The remotes are also lackluster, you have to stretch the remote to within two feet of the deck to get the numbers to register.  Wasn't the definition of remote control, to allow you to control remotely?

Other than that though, we had plenty of fun and the price wasn't too bad.  The staff was friendly and let us stay pretty late.  It's your average karaoke place, with a good location for when ur out in the j-town partying.

Do Re Mi is a little bit ghetto, a little bit claustrophobia-inducing, & a whole lot of bizarre. I arrived at about 3am after a birthday party with a crew of drunk friends who had reserved a spot. We got a couple hours of mic-rockin' in, & shredded some of the more ridiculous hits of yesteryear (a tip of the cap to the birthday girl, who made songs from any & all eras into her personal bitch).

Particularly impressive were the strange scenescapes that scrolled across the screen behind the lyrics. Pristine sunsets, grazing animals, rich people on sailboats, you name it. No rhyme, no reason. Just stock footage from the 80s & people's home videos finally put to good use.

There were lots of people smoking in the halls, & it was bring your own booze: Part 'Lost in Translation', part Asian gangster flick. Campy & cheesy, but ultimately expensive. When we finally checked out after a few hours, the bill came to more than $100. Yikes. It would come a lot more highly recommended without that price tag.

I had a rockin' good time here last night. If you're afraid of the bar-typed karaoke, this is perfect for you and a group of friends. It costs $30 per hour, and you can easily stay for 2 or 3 hours. Get a bunch of friends together for the fun, and to lower the costs.

No alcohol is served, but it's pretty easy to sneak it in. They sell soft drinks for $2.00.

It's hot in the little rooms, so dress appropriately.

i don't get it, there's no booze?

what's that word that usually comes after karaoke? oh, you know... oh it's right on the tip of my tongue. oh right, BAR!!! bar implying booze, liquor, beer, that golden nectar of the gods that makes karaoke possible in the first place.

i'm not really sure i get what's goin' on in this place; small rooms with dirty carpet, a crap selection of pop songs (listed in alpha order by title, not artist, WTF), music that sounded like it was played by a retarded monkey with a casio keyboard and no alcohol to be found. am i missing something?

I have to give props to the guys who work the cashier at Do Re Mi for their acoustic patience.  The rooms are not exactly sound proof, and as I purchased a few bottles of water I clearly heard 2 separate rooms trying in vain to sing "Creep" at the same time, though of course out of sync.  I can't imagine having to work all night having to hear that!

Lots of fun to go to with friends.  I wish they served alcohol, though, since that's what's usually needed to get folks to actually sing.  Pretty good musical selection, but the biggest benefit is that it's private rooms so that you can croon to your hearts content to an audience of friends who hopefully won't hold your performance against you.

Another plus is that it's open super-late; We left at 3:30 AM and they were still going!
