I went here with a few friends, the way I read that it should be done and it couldn't have been better- I think 3+ is the best number but it could be a fun date spot. This location is set out more like your average restaurant, with a full bar.
We ordered a bottle of chardonnay from california, unfortunately I can't recall by whom to pair with the meal- to start was the grilled octopus since it's raved about, and it delivered! It wasn't too charred or undercooked. Also we got the hummus to pair with the grilled pita (yum!) as well as the feta and olives, which came with a great assortment of olives and the feta was ridiculously good. Next we got the seafood fettuccine and it was the perfect portion for three. We finished everything off with the whole fish of the night, branzino. It was cooked perfectly on the grill, we ate every bit of it and filet'd it ourselves but the kitchen does offer to filet it for you if you're not up for the challenge. We ordered cocktails and a delicious caramel dessert. The service was on point, each course was brought out in a timely matter and our water and wine glasses never fell under half full :)
The first time I ate at Dmitri's was over 3 year ago (on a visit to Philly) and I love it so I was overjoyed to discover it is only about 2 blocks from our new apartment :-)
I talked the honey into taking me out on our first Saturday night in town -- something of a mistake because the space was ridiculously crowded (we got there a little after 8pm) but I think the food was even better than I remembered and I can't wait to go back (just as soon as I figure out when the non-popular hours are)
my old review (that some how went to the other location)
Another Philly gem -- this is definitely a town to go to if you like food (and I do.)
Not sure what was meant by unique seafood -- it seemed like pretty standard greek fare when I was there. Tasty hummus and mixed spreads. Wonderful fresh pita. Great octopus salad and yummy little fried smelts. The wines by the glass were a bit disappointing (and for some reason they were out of retsina) but that didn't stop me from drinking a few.
Honestly it is no where near as good as the Greek places in Queens (primarily because Dmitri's 'whites' down the garlic, i.e. way too stingy on the garlic) but then again its heads and tails above any Greek place in the Bay Area (primarily because there are no Greek places in the B.A.)
Dmitri's has really become a staple for our household when guests are around, and i'll explain why: it's a group establishment. To go here with several of your friends is the way to experience this place. To go it alone, or with just one other person becomes way more complicated. It starts to look lackluster.
To do it right, come with at least 4.
Order from the first portion of the menu, and each get something as you will be overwhelmed with food by the time you're done.
Example:
the appetizer sampler
smelts
snap peas
meatballs
a salad
the occasional addition: fresh mozarella with tomatoes
The smelts are consistently delicious, batter fried, and come with a dipping sauce that balances the fried well.
The snap peas come with some sweet acidic tomato sauce and salty soft feta and is truly one of my favorite dishes on the menu.
The appetizer sampler includes the six traditional greek pita toppings plus some beets. I personally don't like the beets, but there is usually someone at the table willing to take those for the team.
The greek salad is a traditional one with cucumbers, feta and some green peppers, topped with a greek style vinagrette dressing.
Meatballs come specially designed with a beef lamb mixture of meats, offering a unique flavor and topped with a side sauce of that sweet acidic tomato sauce again that balances their richness.
Also tried the whole branzino, which is enormous, and really well cooked. Those guys in the kitchen have failed to disappoint me.
Alcohol is also not in short supply, despite looking like a small bar. Don't be afraid of the house red. It's actually perfectly passable, and also extremely reasonably priced.
Expect a really good family style greek seafood place here. Service can sometimes seem inattentive, but the crowds will show that the food, which is consistent (so far) and reasonably priced for what you get, is worth the wait.
Meh... stopped by on a Friday around 9:30.
Out of spinach pie AGAIN. Our server was too busy enjoying his staff meal to check on our outside table. If I dine here again, it will be early and inside.

Judging from previous reviews I can tell the same flighty waitress still works here.

This is my new favorite place. The food is always amazing. Be sure to get the calamari. I wasn't in the mood for it the first time I came here, assuming that it would be the standard super greasy and super heavily breaded calamari that you normally get. Instead, little pillows of heaven (yes, I'm pulling out the dramatics on this one) came to the table. My boyfriend dies for their seafood pasta dish (I think it's just good). And I always alternate a fresh fish entree whenever I go. They are always cooked perfectly and come with plenty of lemons. I know there is another Dimitri's across town which is byob but this one is in my neighborhood so I will probably never get to the other.
The only downside is the service. Well, one waitress in particular. I went here on my birthday and she forgot us four separate times. The bartender took pity on us though as she saw what was happening and made sure we got water and utensils and our food. Eventually I think the other waitresses noticed our waitress was, what appeared to be, drunk and so they relieved her and got us our check an took over her other tables. Just a heads up.
But like I said, new favorite place just don't expect the best service every time.
I must say that this should be 4 stars but the service I received was enough to move this from 4 to 3.
This is a nice, comfortable nook, for some great food. I had the hummus, the roasted vegetables and shared a seafood combo. The food was well cooked and it was very fresh and flavorful. The waiter was not so helpful. He seemed rushed (even though it wasn't crowded) and annoyed to answer questions.
I don't want to write off Dmitri's yet. I will go back and review again
I'm more of a fan of the other location but since this place is about a block from my office I make it there fairly often. Similar menu as the other location (maybe even the same) except that they have a liquor license here so it's not BYO. They have a solid selection of wine and beer. The only knock I have on this place (and the other location) is that if you're a regular the rice and spinach sides get old after a little while. That said, the hummus is great and the octopus is unparalleled. It's also the only place I've been to that actually knows how to cook bluefish correctly.
Good place for a casual meal. Food was great. Waitress was gruff by nature but warmed up quickly after I made a few sarcastic comments.
Went with a friend recently. A+
Staff was polite and attentive. We ordered three plates and they all rocked. Fried calamari was fried lightly and had a great olive oil/salt/pepper seasoning. The avocado and citrus fruit salad was additively good -- the fruit had a light pepper covering on it that brought out a lot of flavor. We also had an appetizer combo plate (hummus, tzatziki, beets, etc).
We had a great dinner. I'd love to go back
Great restaurant! Try the fried scallops - amazing. Definitely more of a nice-night-out type of place. Perfect for a date or small group of friends. They have outdoor seating on 23rd when the weather's nice.
Most neighbors around here will complain about the fish smell from this place. But that's because they are cooking some delicious food. I like to come here for appetizers and mixed drinks.
The atmosphere is lively and energetic without being too much.
I also want to add that the seafood combo is amazing. This is priced so well and tastes wonderful. Get it!
Visited Dmitri's recently on a Friday. We had hoped to be seated outside but opted for the short wait for an indoor table. Even at 6:30 the place was louder than I expected, but definitely lively.
Pluses:
- Grilled scallop entree was wonderful. Big, tender scallops, seasoned just right.
- Nice atmosphere, despite the noise level. Definitely has that buzzing neighborhood-restaurant vibe, and I like the open kitchen.
- Big portions. Leftovers made a generous lunch the next day.
Minuses:
- My boyfriend had the grilled squid entree and was underwhelmed. Should have gotten fried.
- The meals both came with greens which were too bitter for my taste. Cooked just right (not too soggy) but just not the right flavor.
- The service was about on par with what everyone else says about this place.
- A bit pricey for what we got. Might try a combination of small plates next time.
This is where you get real Greek cuisine. Grilled seafood with lemon juice. Clean simple flavoring with explosive flavors. The philosophy, why mess with what God has already created for you to enjoy. No fluff, no truffle butter oil with saffron, just pure ingredients.
Fantastic. Another successful stop on Philly's culinary circuit of delights. Dmitri's occupies a corner right across from Fitler Square, which is beautiful night and day. Like Roberto's, it is beautifully decorated inside, with a cozy, lively feel lent by the relatively close-set tables. Not too noisy, though.
I thought the menu was great; several seafood options as entrées with many traditional Greek dishes as appetizers. We had a $15 appetizer sampler plate that included hummus, baba ghanoush, a beet concoction, cucumbers with yogurt, and some others, which was a lot for three people. I had the sauteed scallop entrée, which was plentiful and delicious, accompanied by lightly cooked greens and flavorful rice.
We shared a bottle of wine, and the service was fine. There is also a bar with casual seating behind it. The kitchen is open and faces the main restaurant.
I love the atmosphere here and being right off the park is very nice.
All the food had a very fresh taste to it and the price was definitely right.
I wish their menu was a little more interesting though. I feel like salmon, tilapia and flounder are all kind of boring options.
The scallops were tasty and I hear the squid is too. Their caprese salad was chunky and much more fun to look at than your traditional slices of tomato and mozz. Hummus was fresh and flavorful. I can't wait to move to this neighborhood!
I had heard great things about Dmitri's before going and every single word was true. This place is excellent. Went with two of my girlfriends on Friday night. We sat at the bar and had a couple glasses of wine while we waited for a table. The wine is all very fairly priced, around $6 - $7 a glass, so we took advantage and drank twice as much throughout the night!
Once we were seated, we decided to order a bunch of appetizers and two entrees and just split everything. We ordered a Greek plate, a Greek salad and grilled octopus, followed by an entrée of grilled squid and another with some type of spicy fried shrimp. There was probably enough food on our table to easily feed three more people--the portions were huge! Perhaps we went a little overboard, but at the same time, no one could think of one thing that we would have given up when it was all said and done.
Places like this make me wish I lived in the city so I could go more frequently. Can't wait to go back!
I went to the Fitler Square Dmitri's last night while visiting an old friend in Philly. And I remembered why my husband and I always used to eat in the original Queen Village location.
This spot lacks the charm of the original location (its bigger, colder, and always less crowded) and the food is, for some reason, never as good.
We ordered a perennial favorite of mine - the shrimp scampi - along with grilled octopus and hummus. Everything was fine (though the octopus was tough, in my opinion), but not fabulous. We also ordered wine which our server completely forgot and never brought us.
Eh.
I used to absolutely love Dmitri's, mainly because of their octopus, until I went to Estia, where the octopus is consistently tender. Back to Dmitri's...
I do love the small plates, with my favorites being the octopus (even though it's often tough, but hey, it is octopus), hummus with grilled pita, and the grilled vegetables. The squid is good too, but I prefer it grilled instead of fried. Two small plates are enough for two people to share, but since the prices are so reasonable, why not add a third for more variety!
The Pine Street location is larger, has a liquor license, and they accept plastic, unlike the original in Queen Village (BYOB, cash only). The restaurant can get loud with patrons ignoring their unruly children.
I wish either I was in Philadelphia, near Dmitri's, or Dmitri's was in Boston, near me. Perfect hummus, taramousalata, baba, etc (we got the mixed dip plate, served with perfect grilled pita slices, and got a bit hazy on which was which after a while). The grilled octopus is fantastic, and I think we also got a pan fried shrimp dish (also great). SO SO SO great, all of it.
Some good fresh Greek food. Nummy.
I have always loved Dmitri's. If you love octopus and calamari, then this is the place for you!! Cozy and unpretentious but not shabby. Viva garlic and olive oil - delicious food for the serious eater! Located in a quiet part of the Rittenhouse vicinity, great for a semi-casual dinner with friends (or a 3rd date?). Never had a bad meal here.
On weekends for dinner, I often end up sitting at the bar because I'm too impatient to wait while smelling the tantalizing aromas and seeing other people eating the delicious food - talk about torture.
Delicious!
Expect a wait on weekends. Sit at the bar and you're wait will be a bit shorter. It's a small place, so it can get a bit cramped on busy nights. Good for couples but not for a group (unless you enjoy shouting and squishing.)
Dmitri's does seafood right. Prices are moderate and the food is excellent.
The Greek salad was delicious and quite big. So was the pasta entree that I ordered. I didn't expect the portions to be so large, so I ended up with lunch for two the next day!
A delicious sampler platter is the way to go if you can't choose between all the pita dipping goodies. You get different hummuses, olives and other food that I don't know the name for. For Mediterranean fare, you'll be satisfied. Not anything spectacular but pleasant enough. They also serve seafood so one should definitely check out the octopus dish. Mmm...
Complaints? The gazpacho was a little to salsa-y... Not a fan. But other than that, and being the first outdoor seating customers of the year (gotta love the random warm Philly spring nights) I would go back...whenever I'm in Philly again.
Oh my goodness. No complaints here. The great smells and the warmth from the open kitchen are so welcoming. I like to linger over a meal and savor the food, the atmosphere and the people surrounding me. There was no attempt whatsoever to rush us out on a Saturday night. We shared the appetizer sampler which was abundant and tasty. For our dinner, we shared the salmon and the Moussaka. The fish was fresh and the Moussaka was enough to feed an army (ok, maybe not an army, but 2 people for 2 meals.) The Bechamel on the Moussaka was perfectly creamy and perfectly browned. The brick walls and low lighting make for a very intimate feeling.
I'm not sure if this is the same ownership as the one in Olde City, but I gather so, reading the reviews.
This is one of the crown jewels of Fitler Square. Dmitris is a snazzy bar and restaurant that is one of the coziest places in Philly. Being that they specialize in more exotic seafood, that scares enough people away that this isn't the typical crowded/highly-publicized restaurant like so many in Center City.
Instead, you've got a neighborhood place that's classy, romantic, and always over-serves you on personalized, homemade dishes, great drinks, and a top notch atmosphere.
My favorite thing to do back in the day was go here, get whatever was left to go (something I typically cringe at), and feeding some grateful/hungry dogs across the street in the park.
I stand by anything here that combines their excellent pasta with their superb seafood.
Love this place. Every time I come here I get way too much food, because I can't bear to pass up any of my favorite dishes. Love the hummus, olives, feta, smelts (try them!), grilled octopus...I could go on. Very reasonable prices.
For neighborhood restaurants, it doesn't get much better than this. The waiters are great, the food is great (specifically, the greek with greens salad, the hummus, the smelts, the shrimp...), and the atmosphere is warm. There are stretches when I'm here once a week.
It's located at Fitler Square, a really cute part of town. The atmosphere is chill and relaxed, and I can't really complain about the service, other than the fact that we can't combine the bill at the bar with the bill at the restaurant (we had to pay twice).
We ordered the grilled octopus, which wasn't as great as other people recommended. I was salivating over my friends' fried octopus instead. I also ordered the bluefish pasta, which had tomato sauce and capers, and was only ok. The seafood was definitely fresh, but the food wasn't that exciting. This place also isn't BYO.
The thing I didn't like about this location was the service in regards to there attitude as well as how slow the food takes to come out. Make sure you don't order the seafood plate. That took about 45 minutes before it finally arrived.
The positives: the food is great and relaxing atmosphere.
My recommendation would to go to the location in Queen's Village since the service is much better and it's a BYOB.
Food was pretty good, hostess was grumpy, waitress was apologetic for the speed of service. Seemed like the kitchen was always way ahead of the servers in getting food out to customers. We ordered lemon drops from the bar, and the waitress came back to tell us they couldn't do that (no lemons or sugar - kind of hard to believe given the slices of lemon that were being served with meals). They had a softshell crab special that was pretty tasty the night we were there...
D'mitri locates in the nice area, right across from the park and very easy to spot. I love how they decorate the walls with paintings and how they arrange their tables. You can sit outside if the weather is nice or if you love to see the bar you can sit on those tall tables in the front of the restaurant. If not, you can sit in the back, on the short tables near the kitchen.
I loves the food and the variety they have. For the small plates, they have protein kindda food on one side and veggies on the other. They have 4 or 5 different kind of pastas and many seafood plates.
I ordered a grilled octopus which is very good and a mediterranean plates which has different kind of hummus.
Our entree was the pasta with blue fish which was good and tasty. I never have pasta with fish before and i was thrilled because the fish was fresh and it taste interesting with the chunky tomatoes/red pepper sauce.
i'd give it 3.5. i've been here twice now, as it's fairly close to where i live.
food? excellent. a bit on the pricey side, but quite tasty. the calamari is some of the best i've had in the city. and i'd stick with the appetizer portion.
but it gets crowded. and loud. i'm not one of those people who wants to eat my meal in silence, but i feel like if i show up there with friends, i'd like to hear them talk...and not walk out of there feeling like my ears are buzzing. maybe i'll go there on a non-weekend and it won't be so bad.
This is one of my all time favorite places to go for a good spoil.. I took my mom and sister there and they loved it.. I would recommend ordering a bunch of the little dishes instead of a full blown entree.. It's more fun to share the little dishes with others ! The only downside is all of the yuppies who frequent there and kind of give me and my boyfriend (who just happens to be black) the hairy eyeball when we go in there..not too much in the way of a diverse crowd
By far one of my favorites in the city. It def helps that I live 4 blocks from it. Best Octopus I have ever had. Amazing Shrimp scampy and great wine list. Extremely affordable - diner for 2 with a bottle of wine was all of about $50.
This was a great experience in Greek dining. Had we known that platters where to be shaped we would have not needed so many boxes but it was vary good.
Shrimp pil pil. OMG! Fabulous. The staff are all absolutely sweethearts. I agree with the other yelpers that it does get crazy busy, so we stay away from the back and either eat at the bar area or outside during the summer. Always have a great time in here.
The food is really good here. My favorite is the grilled octopus (app), avocado citrus salad, and the chocolate pot (small chocolate moose). Sometimes it gets a bit crowded on Fri and Sat nights but there is usually very little waiting on the other nights.
food was great. had a feta cheese and olive appetizer. main dish was some sort of fish. wasn't filleted. so i had to eat around bones. i HATE fish bones. but besides that, i liked it. very small, comfy place. wait staff was great, very friendly. liked the after dinner coffee also. besides the bones in the fish, i have no other bones to pick about this place. =)
