As the DIY and crafty craze is sweeping the nation, and suddenly its hip to knit, crochet, and sew, Portland has always maintained its sure fit at the helm of the movement.

And for those of us whose interest is sparked by the many craft fairs around town that showcase homemade goods of Portland crafters, the DIY Lounge is a great, and perfectly Portland, place to pick up these skills.

I took a DIY embroidery class here when they were at their old location adjacent to frock.  It was an intimate setting, with a knowledgeable teacher and five students.  They provided the materials, the know-how, and even a little zine that they had put together with the various stitches.

I never did embroider that project with a cat in front of the Egyptian pyramids, but I was happy to shell my money out to the DIY Lounge--one of Portland's coolest craft institutions.
