Called at 9:00 AM and was able to get in at 9:30
Did not have strep throat.
All is well
Thought I had the swine flu, they did a throat swab and said it was just a sinus infection. Dr Kini is a very smart woman, doesn't over prescribe crap you don't need... it seemed like other doctors are always itching to give antibiotics for every ailment. Your back is itchy? try some antibiotics!
They don't do their own blood draw and analysis, but there is a blood lab just a block away they send patients to.
My cholestrol was 230, she asked me if I wanted exercise advice or wanted any cholestrol lowering drugs, I answered no to both and went on my merry way.
I've been to her office about 3 times and made the appointment either same afternoon or within 2 days.
Nice friendly Filipino receptionist/assistant
I used to have Kini as my doctor. She was OK and I hate going to the doctor anyway and try to avoid it at all costs.
Anyway I ended up going in for extreme shoulder pain when I was 6 months pregnant. I was so obviously pregnant that I didn't think I had to tell her, hey, by the way, if you have not noticed, I'm 6 months pregnant. I figured a doctor would realize or at least ask the question if she was not sure.
So anyway we went through all the shoulder pain things and she started to write me a script for pain killers. I said I couldn't take them because I was pregnant. She looked sort of stunned and said in that case she couldn't do much for me.
There was no suggestion of alternative treatment such as a chiropractic referral or massage treatment.
A previous review said she did not proffer info on things you do not specifically ask. Frankly I think her problem is that she is not very observant. To me, that is scary as I think a good doctor sees things the patient does not. What if the problem was more serious? That thought was enough to make me change doctors.
PROs: quick appointment, really nice doctor, very understanding of your needs, give referrals quick, great office staff.
CON: she doesn't answer questions you don't ask. Go in ready with your list of questions. You may have to remind her of things you talked about in your previous visits.
Overall, I've had good experiences with Dr. Kini. My visits with her can be described as EFFICIENT. But be sure to go in with whatever questions/concerns you may have.
Dr. Kini is everything you want in a family practitioner. My wife started going to her a couple of years ago, and I was so impressed that I switched to her soon after. She is caring, compassionate, and personable while being a smart business person who understands how to manage and administer a successful practice as well. I rest very easy knowing that Dr. Kini will take good care of me should I ever need it. I am very happy to have found such a good doctor early enough in her career to be current on latest practices and so that I can stay with her for a long time, but experienced enough to confidently practice medicine.
No more crabby receptionists. No more "in two weeks the doctor has time in their schedule to check on your flu if it isn't gone by then". No more "you have to schedule an appointment and come in before the doctor will authorize a refill on that totally innocuous acne medication prescription which you have been taking for ten years and the doctor could just call in to the pharmacy if they weren't so money grubbing." No more "we could refer you to a specialist in this case where you are obviously concerned and probably should see a specialist, but then we wouldn't make as much money from your hmo, so we don't want to." And no more "I touched you so I can bill you but now I am moving to the next patient so I can bill them too, no time to talk about your health."
Dr Kini is really great because I can usually get into see her very quickly - same day appointments and she's not cheap with the specialist referrals at all. Whenever I need to see a specialist she does not make it an ordeal to get a referral.
Dr. Kini saw me with little delay on my first visit, and it has been easy to get an appointment as needed ever since. While my first visit was not as long as I would hope for in an introduction with my new primary care doctor, she does stay in the room to answer questions as needed, and as mentioned in other yelps- gives referrals as needed.
Another note of appreciation, she gave me my pap-was nice NOT to have to go to a new doctor for that...
Final thought- Her practice would really be stepped up, if there was a bridge between Eastern and Western medicine. She is all Western- my preference is holistic care. Overall though, I get a sense of genuine caring and compassion from her- she is a good person and a good doctor.
I'm a new patient of Dr. Kini. On my first appointment, she probably spent less than 10 minutes with me. I was hoping she'd spend more time asking questions and reviewing my health history. I have another appointment coming soon so we'll see if things get better.
