6 reviews for Discovery Inn
I like old timey motels. For that, Discovery Inn is a great prototype.
Decor is all '80s, world class bear-tree-trunk sculpture garden, "complementary" morning waffles, pool, hot tub, etc. (Emphasis on the redwood sculptures.)
A lesser hotel would have died long ago, whenever the 101 bypass was constructed, but Discovery Inn clearly has its groupies. When I stayed here, there were scads of police cars in the lot, all of which seemed to belong to guests. A comforting sign, at least if you're not carrying anything you shouldn't be carrying. Or if you're not in Ukiah for a court date. (It's the county seat, apparently.)

This use to be a great hotel. NEW owners in 2008 . The place has gone down hill. , not well maintained. The front desk manager tried to improperly charge credit card , RUDE manager. Breakfast attendant always very nice but it doesn't make up for the bad service and rude managment. My family use to love staying here. Not any more. Its too bad the old owners sold. Rented suite , $225/ night , broken toilet , missing TV , unclean room.
So I just got back from a trip up to the Redwoods for a day and a half. We decided to stay at the Discovery Inn in Ukiah, which is just about an hour away from the touristy drive thru tree and not too far from a hike through the Redwoods. And this way our ride back to San Francisco wouldn't seem so long.
The lady at the front desk was very nice. The pool was huge and refreshing. We didn't try out the hot tubs, but it's good that they even have them. The room was surprisingly large and clean smelling. We stayed in the pet owners section of the motel and you'd think there would be an animal/pet store smell to the room, but there wasn't. Although, I must say, the room was unusually hot during the day even with the AC on, but it did it's job at night.
We chose the Discovery Inn mostly because they accepted dogs for just an extra $25 a night and we were only there for 1 night, so it wasn't too bad. The "pet area" was sad though. It had this little path behind one of the buildings that lead to nowhere, was full of dead grass and was small. They provided a trash can with a pooper scooper, but it didn't look like owners were picking up after their pets. So that was gross.
Overall, I'd stay again. There was nothing huge to rant and complain about. It did it's job.
Heading south on US 101. You've been driving since Lincoln City in Oregon. Now, you're tired, and the whole 101 thing of "TwistyMountainRoad FREEWAY TwistyMountainRoad TwistyMountainRoad FREEWAY TwistyMountainRoad TwistyMountainRoad TwistyMountainRoad TwistyMountainRoad FREEWAY FREEWAY TwistyMountainRoad FREEWAY TwistyMountainRoad FREEWAY......etc" has finally gotten to you.
Ah, there's hope for the road-weary traveler. The Discovery Inn.
Clean, nice rooms. Air Conditioning. WiFi. Hot Tubs and swimming pools to soak your bones. A soft bed to curl up and explore the highway of dreams in.
The next morning? Breakfast. Waffles, oatmeal, rolls, juices, and coffee. All to send you on your way again, well rested and fed.
Heading south, or heading north to see the Redwoods, this is worth the stop.

The Discovery Inn is one of the oldest motels in Ukiah, and that's saying something. The restaurant at the front of the property is now closed for renovation, but it used to be a Sambo's when I was a kid. Seriously. Google if you don't recognize.
Discovery Inn is massive for a motel, and recently underwent a renovation of sorts. The rooms have been re-painted, and there are nice new beds, bad oil paintings and fixtures; but the outlets seem to be the originals. Here's a tip: if you paint a room, replace all of the outlets - the buck you spend will go a long ways.
The staff at Discovery were friendly, and the heater worked wonders, once I figured out its counter-intuitive instructions. They even have a sculpture garden of large-scale wood carvings around a pond out front, so you can gaze across the street at the now defunct Fjords, while contemplating two-foot long wooden frogs carved into tree stumps.
Discovery Inn is a good place to stay if you are just looking to get off of the freeway for a night. But it's not in a part of town that I'd like to discover, or would recommend really getting to know.
My daughter and I love staying in motels, so it was a treat to be able to stay overnight at the Discovery Inn in Ukiah, even if it was only 20 miles from home. We were afraid of being snowed in for Valentines Day at school and decided to take a little mini vacation there right in the middle of the week. In the winter, either a hot tub or an indoor pool is a must, and I didn't want to spend a fortune just for a place to sleep, so I did some research before we shelled out the dough. Only a small amount above a Motel 6, we got a huge room filled with hot tubs (one even big enough to swim in, another with a waterfall), a huge room big enough for five people instead of just us two, a refrigerator, a desk, HBO, a wake up call, and a great breakfast for free. My daughter loved the wood carvings outside (so do I!) and the girl at the desk was super friendly. The continental breakfast had just about everything you could want, and the woman working there even made our waffles for us. Unfortunately I didn't notice that she had come to work sick before accepting that offer...but hey, it's the thought that counts and it was still yummy.
