Went through a REALLY shitty, poorly layered haircut a couple weeks before I came here. Come on, I'm an Asian girl with Asian hair and I want your typical Asian girl haircut: razored layers. No bangs, no color, no other shits & giggles. The stylist somehow managed to screw up giving my hair layers, so I remembered that I had a Yelp deal for Diesel and I came here.
BEST. CHOICE. EVER. I love the interior of this place - it's so non-pretentious (no ultra-futuristic, we're-the-shit salon decor) and so is the service. Everything from booking my appointment over the phone to chitchat with Amber throughout my haircut was on point. And she gave the most amazing head/neck massage when she shampooed my hair... OMGGGGGG none of my stylists before gave massages, but it should be frickin' mandated for all hair stylists to do that now because it was bliss.
As for my haircut, I was really impressed. Not only did she manage to reverse the idiocracy of the previous stylist, but she managed to make my razored layers look GOOD - better than all my stylists have before.
I would love to come back if I wasn't on a tight college student budget, but trust me, if you really want to treat yourself and your hair, come here and get Amber to do it (but you might have to book like a month in advance.. she's a popular choice!) -

I like my hair. I do. I comb it every day, brag about how healthy it is to everybody I know and use the ends for a fake mustache occasionally. But I don't think my hair is worth the costs of this place! A 3-inch cut and all-over highlights cost me $225! That's a months worth of gas!!!
What annoyed me the most is there hair stylist 'levels' of skills. What ninja obstacles they had to take on, one may never know. But the price goes up by how experienced they are. I rescheduled my hair appointment with a 2nd level ninja and then without telling me, they bumped me up to a Director, which is the most experienced and expensive stylist. So lame. Melissa H. was nice, but I don't know, I just thought my hair cut was OK. I didn't feel like I just walked off Extreme Makeover or anything.
I don't think I'll give them a second chance, but just be careful of your booking and know what stylist you want beforehand. -

I bought a Yelp Deal for a New Customer haircut and was extremely happy to use the salon's website to book my appointment online. If only everything else had been smooth sailing...
Street parking was OK. Waiting for my appointment with some other client's two unattended children - not so much. Asking whether the client is (1) coloring grey hair and (2) dyeing her hair at home is not exactly the best start to a productive relationship, particularly when the answer is NO to both questions.
The cut was only so-so, but I won't be back. -

I got my hair done by Amber and I absolutely love it! I decided to go blonde back in April, which in retrospect was a huge mistake. Amber took my blonde disaster and made me dark brown fabulous again! Even better now with the awesome medium length bob she gave me. Also the grey coverage is phenomenal. I am way too young to have grey hair so that is my biggest pet peeve- even if the color fades those greys better not show! Glad to say my hair is bleach free for three months and on the road to recovery, one day at a time (shed tear).
Yes it is kind of pricy but there is a yelp deal to get you started and a "reward program" that gives client discounts. When you factor in the quality you receive its totally worth it.
I highly recommend Diesel Salon and especially Amber! -

Short story to preface: Before moving to San Diego, I lived in New York City, the land of $300 haircuts. I myself was used to paying upwards of $100 for a decent 'do, but the really great cuts - the ones that look amazing even after 3 months - were reserved for places like Bumble & Bumble and Sally Hershberger, who, HELLO, charges a mere $600 per cut. SO. Preface over, moving on...
Fast forward to 7 years after my last New York coiff....I have been trying to find a great-but-economical stylist here in San Diego. Of NYC standards but Occupy-Wall-Street prices. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. I HAVE FOUND HER. Her name is Jessica and she is employed by Diesel Salon in Kensington, THANK GOD. Because this means she can bestow her magic on me and I only have to zip up the 15 North! Exit Adams! Turn right!
Anyhoo, I waited until 2 weeks after the actual cut to write this review because I needed to see how I could manage it on my own, which to me is the sure sign of a good cut. Well, I walked out of the shower, tousled it, and it looked amazing. I mean, I don't even have to work for my good hair days anymore. Well, I mean I still WERK. You know whattamean.
Jessica, you are a hair goddess, and I am thankful you helped me look so fabulous. Thank you for leaving me enough cash to buy my children Christmas presents. MWAH!! -

WooHOO!!! I'm new to SD and finding a new salon was not easy until I happened upon Diesel Salon. The Yelp special, on top of the EXCELLENT customer service (both on the phone and in person), plus the cool decor, plus the knowledgeable staff, plus Jessica...oh Jessica...you are amazing! Thank you so much for my extra layers, new color, your wicked great balayage skills, and very California feel! I'm so happy that other salon didn't call back in time and I went with Diesel Salon! I will be a loyal customer of Diesel for a long time as long as they keep doin' what their doin'!!
Keep in mind, it's street parking, so you might want to leave a little extra time to find a spot. It wasn't hard...even at 5:30...but still not as easy as a parking lot. If you're new, check out the YELP special and then also do a YELP check-in on your phone for a fun little grab bag type gift.
I think the prices are pretty moderate...I didn't feel like I was paying an arm and a leg. I also liked the friendly feel of the salon...definitely didn't get a pretentious vibe at all. Yay for friendly, customer service oriented businesses that care about their clients!!! -

Have had nothing but a great experience here....being new to sd and a bit of a commitment phobe, it took me forever to find a cool salon with an even cooler stylist. You know how it is when you just get someone? Yep, Melissa H and I just clicked and she is now the recipient of all my loyalty and referrals. She did an incredible job fixing some of the "trouble" areas my old stylist left behind. She's talkative, patient and upfront. I appreciate that in a stylist! Not to mention, she's extremely talented. I'll definitely be back.

I've honestly never enjoyed my hair until I came into Diesel Salon and I've gone through a fair share of bad hairstylist. Kaitlyn has been doing my hair for over a year now and she always understands what I want. I get compliments on my cut and color even on days I do nothing to my hair. I work as a Dental Assistant so I'm in scrubs all the time and my hair is always up so I'm surprised that people still comment on my color. I guess THAT'S how good she is! In 2010, I did all over red and by the end of that year I did a brown/blonde ombre, and right now my hair is red/blonde ombre. The ambiance of the salon is also pretty cool and relaxing. I'm usually asked if I would like water or a glass of wine so that is a plus for me. I've been more than satisfied with my choices here so if you really want someone who understands what you want and does an amazing job - go to her. She also gives good massages while she's rinsing you out! hahah, thanks Kaitlyn :)

I love love my hair cut! I didn't request a stylist, just chose one that was a higher level? I don't remember exactly what the levels were but theyll walk you through it when you make an appointment.
Anyways, I got Renee Paris and she was awesome. I brought some pictures of what I wanted, we talked about what she thought I should get, and she made sure to explain what she was doing while cutting my hair. Made me feel comfortable putting my hair in her hands.
The hair cut I ended up with is great, definitely got positive comments on it. I've had bangs before but the way she cut mine made them much more versatile and I love how easy it is to get volume now in my typically flat hair.
Prices are higher than I'm used to (I had a groupon so that helped) but if you have the money, this place is worth it. Oh and I highly recommend Renee, shes super chill and did a fantastic job on my hair. I'm sad I moved out of SD soon after this cut, I can only hope to find a place as good as this one in san jose! -

I should have written this review weeks ago when I actually got my haircut and was walking around flipping it very subtly and showing it off at as many social events I could squeeze in before I had to wash it. But things happened and I'm reviewing now, two weeks before my next cut/color/styling.
I discovered Deisel Salon through a Yelp deal, when I bought a certificate for myself and a girlfriend. I took my sweet time scheduling my appointment because I felt kind of bad cheating on my stylist of 7 years.
I'm glad I gave them a try. From the minute we walked in, everything was WONDERFUL. We were offered coffee as we waited (bless), were taken back to our stylists who were assigned to us since we were first timers and had great consults. Sometimes, it's the little things you notice. Maybe it's just because my old stylist was comfortable with me, but she always had me prep the foils for my highlights. Not here. I got to giggle and chat with my friend, enjoy the cool decor and not do a thing. The hair styling and coloring was LOVELY. I literally couldn't stop showing off my hair all day (and night and next day). However, the very best part was the scalp massages we got during/after our hair was washed. There may have been marriage proposals bandied about.
All in all, I'm thrilled. Everyone was friendly, the decor was cool, the service was great and I can't wait to go back. -

Based on the level of poor service and attitude I received, I would not recommend this place nor would I return.
All I did was walk in to buy shampoo.
The two women behind the desk couldn't be bothered to stop talking when we walked in. Not a big deal. When we were finally addressed, the woman was rude, pushy and indifferent. Upon bringing my purchases to the counter I was told I would not be able to use my debit card unless I provided my full address. Fine. I thanked the nicer of the two women and left without the shampoo I specifically came into their salon to purchase.
Again, I only wanted to buy shampoo. This review is NOT based on a haircut since I didn't actually make it that far in my interaction with the staff. -

Disclaimer: My bf and I have had a slew of interesting (in a bad way) visits to salons. Between my wavy and thick hair and my bf's curly hair, far too many stylists have claimed knowing how to cut our hair, with appointments only ending in trauma.
With that being said, we've been looking around for hair stylists who could tame our mane and that opportunity opened up when Groupon and Diesel made a sweet connection.
THE TURN ON
1. My boyfriend had a really great experience with Melissa. She made his curls look fab! She even had straightforward advice for my hair.
2. Very accommodating and genuine staff
3. My stylist was patient
THE TURN OFF:
This place lost a star, because I got rushed out of my appointment. I wanted a drastically shorter cut to get the bad juju out of my sun-ridden and tired hair, though my stylist insisted that I wasn't ready for "the bob." (I've had it before and rocked it just fine.) Toward the middle of my appointment, I spoke up and let her know that I felt her current choice of cut on my hair was too long. She said she had an appointment shortly after mine and another after that and another after that... and I had to come in another day to get the desired cut.
Needless to say, I settled on a $6 bottle of hair dye in lieu of paying more $$$ to get my hair cut done the way I originally wanted it.
Overall, this place was "too fancy huh!" for me, and they are pumpin' out Groupon first-time clients like a factory. I continue to await the day when I will be reunited with Jenn (from former Rocco's Salon). -

Just went to Diesel this past week for my haircut.
I just started seeing Christina about 6 months ago and am very happy with my haircuts - she does a really good job & is very sweet and listens to your needs before starting. I would totally recommend her -and really am going to Diesel because of her.
There was a little confusion because I had bought the "coupon deal" for $35 that gave you $75 dollars of service - when I made my appt I told them I had this coupon and there seemed to be no problems - but alas when I got there was told that since this coupon was only for new clients that I couldn't use it but they did give me back my $35 that I originally paid for it - which is was nice of them so I didn't lose any money on it.
The only problems I have had with Diesel is scheduling appointments & front desk - the first time I went to them I tried to put an appointment in online and there was confusion on if the stylist I wanted was available or not - resulting in a few back and forth phones to figure it all out. The second time I was there the computers were down so payment was a little difficult but they just took my information and ran the card later and of course this last time there was coupon issues. Even though everything seemed to work out at the end I wouldn't call the front desk person...the "friendliest" person or welcoming at all - in reality I feel like she is a little off putting and kind of makes you feel like you are bothering her. But, I will gladly go through the desk to get to my haircut & Christina does make up for it with what a great job she does. -

Love my hair cut! I was reluctant to try a new stylist, but definitely needed a change so I tried this salon after seeing the reviews and the deal they were offering. I chose the $50 level and the salon booked me with Renee since I didn't know who to request. Will definitely make an appointment with her again since she totally knows what she's doing! Friendly, knows what she's doing and best of all, really great at making you feel at ease. I told her that I was wary of trying a new salon and she made sure that I was comfortable with everything before making a big cut. Renee also gave me some great tips for caring for my hair so that it's healthy and strong. Definitely looking forward to my next visit!

So, I'm fairly new to San Diego, and, being a female with an unbearably thick head of hair, I needed to find a quality place to fit my hair-grooming needs. I stumbled upon this little gem not too long ago, and I can tell you that it is one of the coolest hair salons... nay, coolest PLACES in this city that I've seen. The atmosphere is laid-back, yet extremely professional. Youthful, yet mature and sophisticated. I love the layout and decor of the salon, and the whole vibe makes me excited to go there. And they offer beer! I don't even like beer! But it's cool enough to warrant multiple exclamation marks!!!
Anyway, I highly recommend Christina, who truly offers an individualized hair-styling experience. I am one of the most indecisive people ever, and even if I often find that I have no idea what I really want to do with my hair, Christina never fails to use her expertise in suggesting hairstyles and colors that really flatter my face. She's super sweet, cute, and it definitely shows that styling hair is her passion and that she cares about meeting others' personal needs. Her open-mindedness allows her to get creative if you want some funky new 'do, but no matter what you're looking for, she will definitely listen and deliver awesome results. So what are you waiting for? Go sexify your hair today! ;) -

This place is like a living room couch! I love it. Ashlee, my stylist, is so sweet and fun to talk to. Usually, when I have a haircut, I feel really tense, but Ashlee was so calming that I didn't even think about my cut! Moreover, she made me love my hair again! My hair is super thick and by the time she was done....it was fabulous! I couldn't believe it. When I saw myself in the mirror, my jaw dropped! "is that really me?" I squeeked speechlessly. hahhahah.
I gave it five stars because they always have some discount and the stylists here are awesome! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! :) -

I have been around San Diego salons - I have tried many of the "top" salons...I must say this is my favorite. I even got my fiancée to convert and go here now.
It's not a fancy salon, but the hair stylists are top notch and super professional.
And their prices are very reasonable and fair. -

I came to Diesel after a particular disfiguring haircut from my long-time prior hairdresser. I was contemplating looking for a new salon, so this forced me to act. I checked Yelp first (of course), and then made the rounds to about 4 well-rated salons. I asked each one for a consultation first.
Because I have short hair, it's v-e-r-y important to have a skilled stylist. Most of the people I spoke w/ at the other salons were so new to the business I wouldn't trust them to cut my dogs's hair. It was clear that many stylists in San Diego just don't have the skills to create a precision "east coast" haircut. After interviewing several folks, I booked time w/ Amber, and I'm glad that I did.
The Salon is clean, well-run and totally professional. It's clear that the people who work there are passionate about hair and dedicated to improving their craft. I'm very happy with my cut(s) from Amber, but I feel certain that the other stylist there would also be just as competent.
Also, on-line scheduling is super-convenient. 5 stars from me. -
Review from Danny W.
I can only speak from a male perspective on this place, but I really dug the Diesel.
My hair isn't that long. I could probably get it cut almost anywhere and the end result would be pretty much the same. While I totally enjoyed the cut... really the only reason I go to salons is the chance of a having a cute and flirtatious stylist to chat with.
With Diesel the chances of hitting that jackpot are very high. Of the 3 that I saw on the floor, all were lookers and the one who did my hair in particular was adorable. She was literally a spitting image of Kelly Kapowski from Saved By The Bell and really fun to talk to. Between the hotties, the head massage they give while shampooing your hair, the free beverage, (alcoholic or NA) and walking out of there with the confidence of Zach Morris from my new doo...I'd say this salon is certainly 5 star worthy.Listed in: Hair We Go, For Your Dome

After a year (YES a whole year!) without a haircut I knew that it was time for a change even though I had no idea what I wanted. Enter Kaitlyn at Diesel Salon.
On a referral / recommendation from a friend and coworker I called to make an appointment. They answered the phone promptly and it was easy to make the appointment. I was all set, now I just needed to know what I wanted.
Against the advice of my friends and boyfriend, and my better judgment, I decided that I would just let Kate do what she thought was best for my hair texture (it's straight as could be and pretty fine) and my face shape. I gave her the basics about what I wanted (i.e. no pixie cuts and no thinning) and let her do what she wanted, after all she is the professional.
Kate was sweet, polite and very friendly and it was easy to trust that she really was going to know best. Even thought I pretty much gave her free reign she consulted with me and got my feedback before starting anything. We quickly agreed that many many inches needed to be cut off and I ended up walking out happier with my hair than I have ever been before. My hair looked thicker, had more body and was the shiniest it's ever been. Even my color, which wasn't touched, looked better!
Everyone loved it (so much so that some were compelled to touch it) and even my boyfriend was happy with it. I didn't hesitate to make my next appointment right then and there, which for a stylist commitment phob like me that says a lot. Weeks later I'm just as happy with my hair as I was when I walked out and I'm glad that I've found someone I'm looking forward to going back to see. -
Review from Sarah G.
I've been thinking long and hard about this review, but it's finally time to toughen up and let people know I simply had a mediocre experience here.
About a month ago, I came in for my first cut in 6 months. Yes, I know it's probably bad to wait so many months, but I have this really nice long blond hair I enjoy to keep, well, long.
Anyways, my stylist came out and she was the typical hairdresser slash bartender I've come to be accustomed with here in San Diego. She then said they have drinks, but then didn't offer me one. OK, thanks. I showed her a picture of a cut I wanted and she scoffed, "Ugh, you brought a picture." Uh, okay, sorry I needed to show you exactly what I wanted.
Then she proceeded to tell me my hair can't "handle" layers, and instead gave me a quick cut across, all the same length. Now, I've had layers before and they always look incredible. Maybe she was being lazy? I don't know. The actual cut took about 10 to 15 minutes, and then she proceeded to take the remainder of the hour blowdrying it.
So, my hair turned out looking alright, nothing special, and certainly nowhere near where I wanted it to be. Again, I have had layers before and they always look great. I just don't know what was going on with this girl.
The only good thing that came out of this experience was the deep conditioner I purchased while I was there. This stuff has made my hair so shiny, strangers on the street have said something. I think it's L'oreal absolut repair or something like that.
Needless to say, I probably won't be coming back again. I should probably just stick to Hillcrest where there are hair salons galore. -

I just came back here for a haircut a few days ago. I really like this place! I first came here to get my hair colored when they had the Hot on Yelp Deal. Such an awesome deal!! Got my hair colored by Joshlyn and it came out looking great!! I'd definitely come back for a color!
I came to Melissa for my cut. I asked for a trim, keeping the length, with more layers. She definitely delivered!! I have never been SO HAPPY with my hair cut! It looks so good. I can tell that Melissa is passionate about her work - she, too, loved my cut! She also styled my hair and added so much volume (I have REALLY flat hair), it looked great! I am definitely coming back!
I recommend Melissa for your haircuts! She did an AMAZING job!! I got so many compliments on my hair already! -

Diesel Salon is the best! It's blocks from home, easy to park at, easy to make appointments with and I love my Stylist, Renee Paris.
She is personable, fun, and reasonably priced.
I recommend Renee and Diesel Salon to anyone looking to get styled, wanting to save some cash, and avoid parking frenzies. -

I have made this a regular spot for my hair needs, hair products and most of all Amber/ my stylist keeps me coming back over and over.
She is efficient, not overly friendly, never pushy, great with hair and i have been very pleased each and every time. She is the reason i go here, two hair products she recommended have been terrific on my hair.
Ask for Amber if you go here, you will thank me : )1 Previous Review: Show all »

So, as far as customers go, Im kind of an a**hole.
BUT the first step to fixing a problem is admitting you have one, riight??
Alright. Here is the story: The Hawt On Yelp deals came out last week. I saw Diesel was doing a special for Brazilian Blowouts ($175...ftw?!?!) and Im like "Shityeah, I am making an appointment!" Little did I notice that the deals arent effective until Nov. (oops!) (of course, the girl that booked me didnt say anything and confirmed my price would be the deal price....Good to know I am not the only one that is a lil cray cray!)
...Also, I pulled the lame customer move of canceling one of my services when I showed up. I had such a busy day planned I didnt really have time for a facial, so I canceled that. Totally annoying, I know. Lo siento...
ANYWAYS. Stephanie T. was my stylist for the day and was SO AWESOME cutting me a break for not paying attention to the fine print. Her (and Kaitlyn!) tag-teamed my hair and gave me a salon day to remember. My hair is so soft and so shiny, everyone has been ooh-ing and aah-ing at it. Pretty sure I will be investing in the Brazilian Blowouts throughout the year (as my bank acct permits...)
Stephanie also hooked me up with some awesome apps to download on my Droid and Im now addicted. (Wordfeud, anyone?) But I digress...
DEFINITELY take advantage of their deals coming up in Nov for the Hawt On Yelp specials...I am already going to book an appt for my mom and I to come and get pampered.
Not only are the services worth the prices, but they serve wine and beer. Kind of a no-brainer to check em out, right? -

I've had my hair cut here twice by Jocelyn.
When I first came in, I was a bit nervous because I hate going to new salons, but everyone was so friendly. Once I got in, I was immediately asked if I wanted a beverage.
I didn't have to wait long until Jocelyn came out to greet me. I seriously do not know anything about hair at all, but Jocelyn gave me a lot of simple tips to keep my hair healthier and volumized.
My haircut was really cute and easy to maintain. Too bad I can't blow dry my hair as well as they do.
Definitely would recommend it. Everyone at this salon is super friendly. Also, I really like the way the place is set up - very different and modern compared to any other hair salon you can go too. If you go there, check out the bathrooms, I think its pretty clever haha :) -

You can literally drive down my street and go past about 6 different hair salons but they all seem to only reach that "eh..good" level and never that EXTRAORDINARY level. That seems to be the case for all the salons I have tried here in San Diego. That is including driving as far away as 35 minutes to North County.
Finally, on another attempt to try another new salon in hopes I don't become like my friend who drives up to LA everytime she is due for color. I tried Diesel.
(insert loud applause and cheering)
Casey was so awesome. She knew her color stuff and brought my hair back to natural and not "yellow" like so many colorist were doing to me, and I think it is because she actually heard me and didn't automatically go for "just another california blonde" look.
The people there were really welcoming and informative when i asked their opinion on a whole new color change and Casey's personality is so cool and upbeat/hyper/funny that she washed my bad-work-mood right off and I left feeling like the rockstar I should have grown up to be. -

I love this place. Megan is the cutest, sweetest thing EVER! When I first moved to San Diego I had no idea where the heck to get my hair cut and it was a sad state of affairs when I finally came upon Diesel. I went to her and I haven't been to anyone else in the 2 years since I've lived here. They always make me feel comfortable and they don't have the "we're so much cooler than you cuz we cut people's hair and you don't" vibe. Always a plus.
I truely believe when it comes to hair, you get what you pay for. If you got to a "salon" that's tring to pass off $16 weedwhacker sessions, (I'm not naming names, we'll just say it rhymes with Shmupercuts) as haircuts, this is not the place for you. You will be offended by paying $50+ for a haircut. The products are another story...I love that Diesel uses Bumble & Bumble. A little goes a long way and it's super high quality.
So come on Girl, you're ready to be a grown up! Go get a fancy pants haircut. You'll feel great! -

At the request of the owner, I am reflecting the EXACT dollar amount I spent for getting my hair fried...$752.20!!! This included deep conditioner that was recommended along with B&B conditioner to help keep my color-that's maybe $80 of that total amount.
No matter how you slice it, that's just plain ridiculous....I am very disappointed with how they operate...
-------------------------------------------------- -------------
Unfortunately, I can only give this place 2 stars. I first started going to Diesel about 3 years ago, I loved Candice and always thought she did a great job. Then I moved to San Francisco for 2 years...
So, I recently moved back and thought I would just go back to Candice since she always did an awesome job...I don't know what has happened since I've been gone. Whatever it is, it's not good.
I ended up paying over $700 for a style that was pretty good...It may have seemed a lot better had I not paid an arm and a leg. I ask Candice to give me partial highlights and a trim---the first time, I was charged almost $200. I wasn't sure about the color but I went home and decided to give it a few days. Once I saw unstyled (she always give me big hair, I love that!), it looked ORANGE.
So I called and told them I was not happy with my hair and wanted to come get it fixed. So I went in. Now at my second visit, I sat in a chair for over 4 hours and became a blonde. There are so many things wrong with this...1) I asked for HIGHLIGHTS, 2) My hair is completely FRIED, 3) She charged my AGAIN!!! Not just a small fee...she charged me over $200 to FRY my hair AFTER I came back because I was unhappy with the first job.
So I'm irritated, my boyfriend was furious that they would charge me again. So I figure whatever, move on. Well, 3-4 weeks later, I was starting to get major roots and needed a touch up. I thought I would give them one last chance to redeem themselves...Candice was out of town so I saw Becky. She was MUCH better and brought my hair back to looking much more like what I had wanted originally though I was still charged almost $200 for a cut and partial.
I went to one of the best salon's when I lived in San Francisco. Best meaning well-known, customer service oriented, and very knowledgeable. I paid about $250-$300 for a cut and color. But everytime I came in to get more product, Edgardo would give me a trim or fix a few fly-aways at NO charge. He realized the importance of a happy customer and that each customer is a walking billboard for his expertise.
Now I go to UYEN TRAN at Gloss Salon in Little Italy...She is SOOO MUCH BETTER. After comparing the two, Diesel is wayyy over-priced (don't bother paying attention to their menu of services, you'll never figure out how they came up with the price of services provided), they don't pay attention to what the customer wants, their color doesn't last (see my review for Uyen!) and even if they mess up your hair, you'll most likely be charged all over again.
I hate to rip into them so bad, but it was that terrible of an experience. -

Love my stylist Renee. Yes, the place is a little pricey, but not more so than similarly nice salons.
They are fully equipped to give ultra stylish cuts to those who lean that way.
Personally, I just wanted a reliable stylist for my trims and I'll admit to hide the grays. Nothing fancy, after all I'm chasing a two year old around most of the time and frankly don't care. Renee was so responsive to that - she didn't force a high maintenance crazy beautiful cut and color regimen on me. She just does the single process on my worst gray area and trims it with the same style I've had for years and happen to like. I might be her most boring client, but this is the first time a stylist has actually listened to my needs and made recommendations accordingly.
So to those who want to walk out of the salon gorgeous, this is your place. And for those of us who just want simple reliable styling at a nice facility, I am so impressed that this is also our place! -

MARK REYES IS NOW AT HAIRLAB DOWN THE STREET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I seriusly love this place! I personally love Mark Reyes. I think he is the most knowledgible hairstylist/artist I ever had. I am asian and when I wanted to go blond he totally hooked it up and it looked great! NO COPPER, NO RED tint..it was prefect. He is really great a doing creative things with your hair and is always giving me exactly what I want, actually it always comes out better then I expect it to. My little sister lives in San Jose and will absolutely not get her hair cut by any body else but MR.MARK REYES. He is so awesome.
update: still love mark he's so wonderful
can i adopt you mark? will you be my bff? hahahahaha
i always look forward to our conversations about anything and everything. god bless your magic hands. -

Just moved from San Francisco, where I was fiercley loyal, and desperately reliant on the infamous skills of the to EDO salon artists. So after putting off for one too many split ends I decided to try out a new salon. I decided on Diesel after recieving a stellar review from a friend and checking out what yelp had to say. I called on a Saturday and got in the same day! MARK was absolutely awsome; and answered my never ending line of questions, showed me multiple ways to style my hair, was fun to hang out with, and helped me decide how to undergo my next big veture...hightlights!
I paid $60 for the wash/cut/style, plus $10 tip... and worth it!
street parking was easy and i didn't have to worry about a meter or anything. -

You ever wake up and just need a new look?
Well... if that's the case - this place is NOT one for disappointment.
I called and was scheduled in a snap, and had the wonderful delight of having my hair done by Norma... an amazing, down-to-earth, talented and receptive part of their staff.
Unlike many other places - where I walk in and out, feeling like nothing really happened to my hair - she totally took in what I wanted my hair to look like and brought it to life!
Thankyou.thankyou.thankyou!
I think my new do is sooooooooooo cute and can't wait to tell people all about the place that actually listened to what I wanted AND gave me wine, to boot!
...and for us yelpers, ...everyone knows... whine or wine~ I'll be where the latter is, especially when there's amazing service!!
YAY DIESEL!! I'm SO glad I live SO close to you guys!Listed in: My Neighborhood

Much like Samson, my hair is the source of my strength. When it isn't kept up, I will experience periods of moodiness and basically be in a slump all day.
I've always just either cut my own hair or gone to a barber shop but I decided it was time to let a professional cut my hair. I wasn't disappointed.
I recently caught up with Phoebe from Diesel at one of Yelp's parties last year, we had went to elementary school and high school together but never really kept in touch, what a small world!
Diesel is a cool salon, but not pretentious at all. Phoebe and everyone seemed really laid back and casual. She was very thorough and my hair looks great.
So on behalf of all my friends who have had to put up with my moodiness this week, thanks Phoebe and thanks Diesel! -

I think it's funny how most of these reviews are from people with less than 10 reviews... ehhh? What gives?
Cliff notes:
Jennifer =4stars, haircut =1stars, price =2stars. Read more for the explanation.
Why Diesel:
Because the website was informative and they carried bumble &bumble products. If Tonic and Rinse (bumble bumble salons too) had more information on their website, I might have gone there. I chose Jennifer because from her bio, I thought she was well-experienced (6 years) and she trained at bumble and bumble.
Why Jennifer was 4 stars:
She was easy to talk to, very nice, sweet, accommodating, gentle and was a damn pleasure to talk to!! Plus, she was willing to stay after her hours to cut my hair = dedication and great customer service. Plus I was late and she was sweet anyways.
edit: And although she is a good person (like all hairstylists are suppose to act), I don't think she is a great hairstylist. With 6 years, I think she has tons to learn.
Why the haircut was 1 star:
Let me say this: I REALLY like getting my hair cut with a RAZOR. I like how it feathers through my hair and I like the fact that it splits the end of my hair thin enough to give it less weight. My hair is super crazy heavy when I don't cut it so I always want to lose as much weight as possible. But I respect those who prefer cutting shears.
And Jennifer was one of them.
I haven't had my hair cut with sheers in a long time so I thought, maybe it'll turn out okay after and it was too late to ask for someone else. I have super long, straight soft Asian hair. I asked for 3 inches off and lots of layers.
And my haircut at the end looked like someone took a pair of scissors and just cut it straight in the back. I wanted more layers. I wanted more weight off since it was bulky at the ends. Which is why I prefer razors (my own preference). The ends are blunt, ugly and the haircut was just HORRIBLE over all.
Why price was 2 stars:
$50 for Jennifer. *Edit. Bumped it down to 2stars because my haircut is really bad. The edges are sooo gross (I just took a shower) and I absolutely hate it. Sorry girl, learn to love razors!
Conclusion:
I don't blame Jennifer because I'm positive she is OKAY at what she does but she just wasn't for me. And if you're reading this, don't hate me! I'm sorry I lied but the truth hurts.
I'm moving away anyways but if I came back to SD and wanted to get a haircut (which is possible, believe me), I would definitely try Tonic Or Rinse first!!! -

I had the pleasure to return to Diesel Salon today for a little cleanup of the fabulous haircut that I received a few weeks ago.
My fabulous mop of Jew-fro was handled by Phoebe this time. We had a little consultation session to talk about the direction that I would like to go in... I really liked the style that Lisa had given me on my trip before, and Phoebe agreed that it was a really good style for my hair, although she suggested a more messy look; one that screams "I just rolled out of bed and yet my hair looks that good."
We went to the back to shampoo and condition, and Phoebe used a shampoo that she claimed helped thinning hair. "What??? Are you saying I have thinning hair?" I questioned
"Oh no, Your hair is not thinning, but you'll love this shampoo, trust me."
"Oh nose! I don't know if I can deal with thicker hair"
Then I realized why Phoebe uses that particular shampoo: it makes your whole head tingle and feel fresh, almost like there was eucalyptus in it. The combination of the shampoo and the excellent scalp massage had me purring like a kitty cat laid out in the sunshine.
Phoebe took care in cutting my hair and when she was done she gave it a really cool, messy styling that fits me great.
Diesel salon helps me maintain my status as one of North Park's most handsome men.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Wow- Gianina transformed my color! I walked in with brassy, streaky highlights and walked out with a wonderful blend of caramel, auburn and chocolate browns. I really can't believe how great it looks. I haven't been this happy since I left my long-time stylist in Chicago almost three years ago.
However, for me $150 is pricey, so I can't do this every six weeks :( -

When you get down to the nitty-gritty, there are only three men in my life that really matter: my Dad, my boyfriend, and Mark at Diesel.
Why Mark Reyes? Let me break it down for you:
Because his scalp massage during the shampoo makes me want to earn a ton of money so I can buy a big house with a separate guest house in the back just so he can live with me and wash my hair every morning.
Because he shreds his fingers to give me a perfect razor cut.
Because his blow-dries make me feel like a supermodel.
Because he never forces product on me.
Because he metaphorically held my hand the first time I got color.
Because I'm almost 30 years old and I only recently learned to love my thick, unruly hair - thanks to Mark taking the time to teach me different styling techniques and making sure I really understood each step.
And most of all, because he gets me. I never say much to Mark about what I want, but somehow he reads my mind and gives me exactly what I need, whether it's funky or more conservative. I'm not going to lie - on more than one occasion I've had to wait 30 minutes past our appointment time, but I still give him 5 stars because he's worth the wait. Besides, the receptionist keeps the drinks flowing while you wait. -

I've been going to Diesel Salon for well over 5 years, and think I am super lucky for "accidentally" discovering the greatest salon in San Diego. I had just moved back to San Diego from out of state, and asked a friend where she got her hair done. She told me Diesel, but recommended someone who was no longer there. When I called to make my appointment they offered me one with Candice, and I've been seeing her every 8 weeks since.
I have a ton of thick, semi-wavy hair that looks like a really old perm when it air dries... Since seeing Candice, I have received more compliments on my hair that ever before! I refer people to her all the time, and think that the ambience in her salon is friendly, upbeat and relaxing all at the same time.
I have also been seeing Becky for waxing services for years. She does a great job on my brows, never keeps me waiting, and often times works my waxing into the "processing time" of my highlights.
Diesel is a full service, upscale salon. I keep referring friends, and have yet to be disappointed!
