I love Diesel! I've been to numerous salons in San Diego over the past 5 years and have finally found THE salon! The minute you walk into the place you can feel the positive energy. After looking on their website I randomly picked Naomi to be my stylist and have been happy with my choice. She makes you feel comfortable, listens to what you want and makes me look good! What else could you want? I love that I'm usually out of there in about an hour for a shampoo/cut/blow-dry/style and have always been happy with the results. The entire staff is friendly and I find myself laughing most of the time I'm there. If Naomi is booked I would not hesitate to go to any other stylist there. Everyone walks out of the place looking hot!

I am so happy to have found becky on yelp. i read her reviews and after having my bad experience somewhere else (see my other reviews) i needed to keep the faith!
she is a true pro!she is such a cool chick and very sweet and most importantly was gentle and did an amazing job. she was pretty quick but i never felt rushed like i did other places.my brows and bikini have never looked so good! the salon is very cool, next time i need my hair done this is going to be the place. i really enjoyed my time here, the girls were cool and fun, you could feel the great vibes! 5 star, A+++

So I have this little problem.. I get really bored with my hair. So I go somewhere and get it chopped off, and usually end up hating it, and then I grow it out for months, only to repeat the cycle all over again.
Except this time, I absolutely love it! Its stylish without being TOO trendy, and the exact length i wanted (not the usualy 3 inches shorter), which is practically a MIRACLE. I went to Phoebe, who gave me an awesome cut along with great advice and excellent service. She really knows how to make you feel comfortable, it felt like gabbing with one of my best girl friends. And she made sure I left there with some tips on how to style my new haircut. My whole experience at the salon was great - easy to find parking, and as soon as I walked in the receptionist offered me a drink- and it was like a hundred degrees out so my ice cold complimentary drink was VERY appreciated.

ok so my hair stylist was on vacation and i needed somewhere to go asap before a job interview. i have short hair so it can be really butchered really easily...so picking someone random is always super scary. but i came onto yelp and decided to go here. i had an appointment with ashlee.
first, the decor is awesome. hip, fun, colorful, feels good.
and ashlee was also awesome! not only did i get a neck massage during the wash, but she cut it EXACTLY how i wanted her to ..not even my other trusted stylists who know me have done exactly what i asked for. it was so awesome. also, the small talk wasn't painful or uncomfortable, it was totally natural. so good. as someone whose hair gets butchered easily, and as someone who has issues with hairdresser small talk, i recommend this place with all my heart. i have never ever left a haircut feeling this good.
oh and also, they offered me coffee, beer, wine or a margarita.
I wish I could give more stars cause my hair style wasnt all that bad...but the customer service was horrible! I was with "the owner" ooohhh aahhh, dont let the title fool you, she was sooooo unprofessional! and what a bi-otch! she was very catty and kept leaving me to go chit chat with the front girls, I think she maybe spent 10 minutes on my actual head! for the price she charged I should haved written my check to her poor lil trainee! sorry I wont be back, you cant keep offering me more to drink to keep this girl happy!

Diesel Salon is GREAT but the real reason I continue to go there is Jose Alfredo! He colors and cuts my hair PERFECTLY everytime. Not only is he the BEST at what he does, he is a wonderful person to talk with and share a few laughs. I always look forward to my appointment with Jose. Thanks for all you do, Jose!

I have been going to Diesel for nearly a year and have been a regular and loyal customer of Jennifer Johnson since the beginning (given that the day that I stumbled into Diesel she was the only one willing to accept a walk in.) So when Jennifer made the move to a new and arguably improved salon, I was more than delighted to follow her and keep my beloved stylist.
I was really angered and annoyed that one of the Gals from Diesel called and made me feel super uncomfortable. I receive calls from the management trying to convince me that I would be better with another stylist, even though I had told them that I was happy with Jennifer and her move to Luxe Hair Studios in North Park. Surprise, surprise all of the stylist that could possible fit me in nearly a year ago now wanted my money.

When you get down to the nitty-gritty, there are only three men in my life that really matter: my Dad, my boyfriend, and Mark at Diesel.
Why Mark Reyes? Let me break it down for you:
Because his scalp massage during the shampoo makes me want to earn a ton of money so I can buy a big house with a separate guest house in the back just so he can live with me and wash my hair every morning.
Because he shreds his fingers to give me a perfect razor cut.
Because his blow-dries make me feel like a supermodel.
Because he never forces product on me.
Because he metaphorically held my hand the first time I got color.
Because I'm almost 30 years old and I only recently learned to love my thick, unruly hair - thanks to Mark taking the time to teach me different styling techniques and making sure I really understood each step.
And most of all, because he gets me. I never say much to Mark about what I want, but somehow he reads my mind and gives me exactly what I need, whether it's funky or more conservative. I'm not going to lie - on more than one occasion I've had to wait 30 minutes past our appointment time, but I still give him 5 stars because he's worth the wait. Besides, the receptionist keeps the drinks flowing while you wait.

I went to the salon with my mom and ashlee did our hair and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Ashlee had so many fun ideas for my hair and I have thick hair that is really hard to flat iron but ashlee flatttend it like it had never been flattened before. My mom and i are so happy to have found this salon and ashlee. We love you girl you rock!!!!

i was sitting in class one day and noticed this girls brows wre perfect, literally perfect, and followed her after class. she told me that she got them done with becky at desel salon. i let my eyebrows get a little crazy through finals and needed a master! Becky was my destiny. she was really sweet and friendly and knew exactly what she was doing! now i have the perect eyebrows! i have since gone back and had my brazilian done and damn there is nothing that this girl isnt good at! she is quick AND painless and a great price for a student like me.

Mark at Diesel Salon is just plain old great at his craft.
He takes the time to help you figure out what's personally best for your hair: health-wise and complementary to your overall appearance:
I went into my appointment thinking I wanted one thing, and he helped me to see and consider other options that were better aesthetically fitting for my hair color and skin color.
It's not that he was trying to tell me what I wanted, but as a professional, he could give me a better picture of what the outcome would actually be. I trusted his advice and my hair came out wonderful! This guy just knows what he's doing.
The salon as a whole is really cool. The people are friendly, and the prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the service you receive in exchange.

My friend recommended Diesel so I hopped on Google to check it out. After reading some great Yelp reviews, I figured I'd give it a try.
I arrived at my appointment a little early but waited no more than fifteen minutes to be seen. After Phoebe finished with her previous appointment I went back and told her my issues with my hair, along with the fact that I spend very little time working with it. I also made it clear that I hate getting my hair done, so I want highlights that will last as long as possible. She went right to it and, um, hello? A stylist who actually listens when I say my hair is stick straight and no amount of product or time spent with a curling iron will change that? I am in love. Phoebe gave me exactly what I didn't know I wanted. Unlike most cuts I've gotten in the past, this is something that I can style at home with my next-to-no-talent in the hair styling department.
For those concerned with the prices at Diesel, all I can say is that by the time Phoebe was finished coloring and cutting my hair, I definitely felt like she earned every penny. Go see her! She's awesome!

I have to say that I really love my haircut from Stephanie at Diesel. I never color my hair so it was important for me to find a master stylist and Stephanie definitely is one.
I have really long, thick hair and I wanted to lighten it up with a shorter (though still long) haircut with seventies bangs! And I got the best haircut from this place. The service from the other staff is great too, I was greeted when I arrived and asked if I wanted a beverage - water, coffee, tea, wine or beer...LOVE IT - a little glass of white wine later and I was pleased as punch!
They also sell Bumble and bumble products...bonus!

I have gone to many stylists and have received many different cuts, but have never really felt assured about how my hair was cut - that is until about a year ago when I heard from a friend about "Diesel salon".
I was very reluctant to get a haircut so i decided to go with a friend while she got her hair colored, cut, and styled. I was standoffish at first but once I entered the doors I immediately enjoyed the atmosphere and the friendly - not fake friendly - people I met there.
I decided one last time to "throw in the towel" and give a haircut another try.
My hair stylist Candice listened to my wants and needs in a hairstyle, thoroughly explained how to produce that styled haircut, and gave detail by detail summaries of what exactly she was doing - while at the same time keeping up with genuinely fun and laid back conversation. The finished product was exactly what I wanted. I went in there fearing haircuts and came out ecstatic about my hairstyle. Needless to say I have been going to Diesel Salon (and Candice) ever since.
Also, thanks to my stylist Candice I have received many compliments from friends, strangers, and even received offers to even do hair photos - Thank you Candice.

Phoebe is such a great stylist.
I have been getting my hair cut from her since I moved here.
I usually do not trust anyone with my hair, but she always does a great job.
The products the salon offers are great too and everyone is really nice.

I think it's funny how most of these reviews are from people with less than 10 reviews... ehhh? What gives?

Why Diesel:
Because the website was informative and they carried bumble &bumble products. If Tonic and Rinse (bumble bumble salons too) had more information on their website, I might have gone there. I chose Jennifer because from her bio, I thought she was well-experienced (6 years) and she trained at bumble and bumble.
Why Jennifer was 4 stars:
She was easy to talk to, very nice, sweet, accommodating, gentle and was a damn pleasure to talk to!! Plus, she was willing to stay after her hours to cut my hair = dedication and great customer service. Plus I was late and she was sweet anyways.
edit: And although she is a good person (like all hairstylists are suppose to act), I don't think she is a great hairstylist. With 6 years, I think she has tons to learn.
Why the haircut was 1 star:
Let me say this: I REALLY like getting my hair cut with a RAZOR. I like how it feathers through my hair and I like the fact that it splits the end of my hair thin enough to give it less weight. My hair is super crazy heavy when I don't cut it so I always want to lose as much weight as possible. But I respect those who prefer cutting shears.
And Jennifer was one of them.
I haven't had my hair cut with sheers in a long time so I thought, maybe it'll turn out okay after and it was too late to ask for someone else. I have super long, straight soft Asian hair. I asked for 3 inches off and lots of layers.
And my haircut at the end looked like someone took a pair of scissors and just cut it straight in the back. I wanted more layers. I wanted more weight off since it was bulky at the ends. Which is why I prefer razors (my own preference). The ends are blunt, ugly and the haircut was just HORRIBLE over all.
Why price was 2 stars:
$50 for Jennifer. *Edit. Bumped it down to 2stars because my haircut is really bad. The edges are sooo gross (I just took a shower) and I absolutely hate it. Sorry girl, learn to love razors!
Conclusion:
I don't blame Jennifer because I'm positive she is OKAY at what she does but she just wasn't for me. And if you're reading this, don't hate me! I'm sorry I lied but the truth hurts.
I'm moving away anyways but if I came back to SD and wanted to get a haircut (which is possible, believe me), I would definitely try Tonic Or Rinse first!!!

I've been walking past this salon since it opened. I wanted to check it out since it didn't seem as stuffy as the other salons in Kensington but I'm skittish about new hair places. I read the reviews on here and decided it was time to go for it.
I called Wednesday night and made an appointment for Saturday morning. When I arrived at 9am there were 2 girls at the front desk, both seemed very friendly. I got checked in, offered a beverage and barely had time for a sip before my stylist Phoebe came to take me back.
Phoebe was super nice and I had fun talking to her about music and local clubs.
I got my hair cut with layers and it looks really cute. I'm using the Bumble and Bumble surf spray and it's giving my baby fine hair some texture and playing up the slight waviness that usually hides.
Only gave 4 stars because my haircut isn't a major change, I would have appreciated some more ideas or feedback for what might look good on me and work with my hair. Definitely going back though and will ask for suggestions to see what they come up with.

Yes, fo' real, Diesel is awesome. Been going to Robert Cromean for 7+ years and FINALLY broke free, only to find **Mark**...cue harps and angels singing. He asked questions, let me know exactly what his plans were and he listened to my needs. The perfect man! ; ) I left looking pretty and fresh...hard to do after a 10 hour day! Then saw Becky for a brow wax, and volia, all was good in the universe again.
The atmosphere is warm, the peeps are chill, the wine is ready. What could be bad?

Since moving to San Diego 3 years ago I have been jumping from salon to salon not being able to find a stylist I love. I had been getting my hair done when I flew home 2 or 3 times a year until i went to Diesel. I'm so happy not be be making SF hair trips now. :)
I drive by all the time since I live in the neighborhood and read good things about it on here. I checked out the web site and was delightfully surprised to see that they sell Bumble & Bumble which is the way I determine a good salon from the rest. Bumble reps will not sell their products in a salon they don't believe is worthy... Diesel definitely measures up.
I have not had bangs since I was 6 years old. I wanted to change things up and Phoebe could not have nailed it better. She was friendly from the start and we chatted the entire time she did my hair. I love my hair. I love my bangs. I love Phoebe!
My fave part was that she suggested products for my hair that would actually work, not ones she would make the most commission off of.
The entire staff was so friendly and took the time with me even when making my appointment to make sure I was happy.
There was even candy at the front desk when i was checking out... which always wins points with me.

This place is great! I love my hair and my brows! I must say after leavin there, I look pretty damn fine! My sis and I went in for a consultation for just her, while i was waiting saw they had face stuff too, so I was able to get in for a wax, i forgot her name but she was sooo freakin cute! best brows ever. My sis went back the next week and I went with her!!! Our stylist was so cool and friendly, dang wish I remembered her name, I;m so bad.
Anyway GO THERE if you want to be as HOT as ME!!

a few weeks ago, I had the first facial of my life. ever since i had my baby my skin has been a mess! I found Becky on Yelp, and went to see her. She is soo great, her products that she uses are fantastic too! i was always worried with facials about breaking out with all the oils and other stuff, but she told me all about the differences and what she could doo to help me. My skin looks so much better, I'm going to continue seeing her to keep it this way! She has a gentle , magic touch. plus when i walked out i felt so refreshed and relaxed.
I love my conditioning solution she sold me, i now can't live without it :)

I seriusly love this place! I personally love Mark Reyes. I think he is the most knowledgible hairstylist/artist I ever had. I am asian and when I wanted to go blond he totally hooked it up and it looked great! NO COPPER, NO RED tint..it was prefect. He is really great a doing creative things with your hair and is always giving me exactly what I want, actually it always comes out better then I expect it to. My little sister lives in San Jose and will absolutely not get her hair cut by any body else but MR.MARK REYES. He is so awesome.

I have crazy Asian hair - you know, too much of this thick stick straight flop. It's well tamed by gravity when it's long, but short cuts require incredible skill.
As part of my near annual Locks of Love donation, I chop off all of my long locks, and I almost always end up dealing with an awful growing out period. In recent years, I've become more picky about where I go to get my chop, so I picked Diesel after extensive yelp research.
The results? Pretty good, but way too far from my house and pricier than I'm used to. Not to mention my stylist was 30 minutes late to my appointment. The quality of the cut I got is good, but not completely out of this world. I could get an equivalent cut closer to home for half the price.
I like Diesel's funky decor and my chatty, but inexperienced hairstylist Phoebe. She had help from Stephanie, who though a bit impatient, seemed well seasoned and skilled in her craft.
That's all fine and dandy, it's just not enough for me... sorry, I won't be making another trip.

Oh how lucky I am to have found Becky! She has transformed my skin and eyebrows. I didn't realize how bad they were till I recently looked at an older picture, wow, can you say I used to be " tweezer happy"! Becky guided me on the path to beautiful perfect eyebrows. She got me using better skin stuff with facials once a month and she was so positive about what results I was gonna see. Well I have! And I am sooo very happy! She did my makeup for a holiday party and I never had so many compliments! Shes got the skill and touch to make anything beautiful. Thnks again Becky!

This was my first time to Diesel...found it from other Yelpers! I saw Megan Tew for highlites and a cut. She listened to what I had to say and made some suggestions and away she went. She was very efficient and quick with the highlites and did a great job with the blowout and styling when done. The cut was very precise. I made a second appt for February so I will give you an update then! Also the girls up front are so nice and really helpful!!
UPDATE 1/6 - It has been a little over a week. I have never had so many compliments in my life! Thanks Megan!

I just had my hair cut at Diesel yesterday by Jennifer and thanks to my fellow Yelpers. From the moment I walked in, everyone was super friendly. Upon entering your offered a drink and let me tell you, there is no pretension here. Everyone is truly great and helpful. From the moment Jennifer greeted me, she made me feel like an old friend. Having my haircut and styled by here was like hanging out with my girlfriends and but ending up with awesome hair. She did a great job listening to me and I gave her pretty much free reign over my hair. The end result was spectacular. I've been to quite a few nice salons in San Diego and my experience with Jennifer and staff was just top notch.
Also, Diesel is just a cool salon. I've become wary by places that look to cool because often times along with that comes attitude, almost like you are not hip enough to be there. Well that's not the case here. I highly recommend the salon and especially Jennifer. I've left salons before where I was happy with my hair, but I have to say that for after leaving Diesel, I felt giddy. Seriously, it was the same way I feel after having cocktails with the girls.

I saw Jennifer on Saturday and have had a ton of compliments since then. Everything from "Very Posh" to that just suits you.
She and I did have a long discussion on the changes my hair goes through during the summer/fall months and how to keep it from going "peachy" (think bad sun-in color). She's sweet, hates to keep you waiting (YEAH!!!) listens and just works miracles.

After reading all the excellent reviews on Yelp! I decided to give Diesel a shot.
I booked an appointment (online! how convenient!).
My stylist Phoebe was friendly and chatty - without being annoyingly fake cheerful. We chopped off 4-5 inches of my hair and added some side sweeping bangs. It was painless and turned out great!
I've received a few compliments on the cut already! Definitely would recommend.
Not that is contributes to my cut, but the decor was very cool and trendy...I liked a lot of the pieces of art hung about.

I've lived in San Diego for years and tried every salon out there! Not happy with my hair and without a regular stylist a friend reccommended Diesel.
I was impressed with the customer service from the moment I called to book my appointment. (which you can also easily do online) I arrived and found plenty of parking....had a corona while I waited about a minute... and as Diesel is set up craftsman style, I actually felt comfortable being a guy in a salon.
I saw Jennifer for my haircut and will now continue to see her every 3 weeks until I die! She listened to everything I liked / disliked / wanted / needed and brought great suggestions to the consultation.
On top of her being completely particular and thorough with my cut, it was awesome to hang out with her for 45 minutes. She gives an awesome head massage and by far the best haircut I've ever had! Jennifer is the best! Diesel is the place to go!

I found Diesel salon while on a business trip to San Diego. I instantly fell in love the decor and their Margarita Fridays!
I walked in and was greeted with a smile, there was great music and a friendly non-pretentious vibe. They offered me just about anything to drink and I completely forgot about work, had a glass of snooty wine and relaxed.
First impression was that all the stylists were busy and smiling. There are a lot of different styles at Diesel....I've learned thats why they are the best! They cover every spectrum...punky to professional.
Jennifer was my stylist and I have never been so in love with my hair! Her use of color is gorgeous and I have never received so many compliments on my cut before she worked her magic. She really knows her stuff...she took the time to educate me about the products and how to recreate my style at home. Besides being an awesome stylist, I always feel great about myself in her chair....she is full of this magnetic energy!
As I live in Colorado, I have been scheduling my business trips to California around my hair appointments...shes that great!
What a difference she has made to my hair...so thankful for Jennifer. Diesel is awesome, give it a try!

I love getting my hair done at Diesel. Everyone is so friendly, and willing to serve me a refreshing drink every time I am there. I drive all the way from Yuma AZ, over 2 hours just to have Candice do my hair. When you constantly get compliments from strangers on how great your color and style looks, you know you have a terrific stylist, and worth the drive!! Candice always has amazing ideas, she has made me look 10 years younger! Her vivacious personality also lifts my mood as we chat. Visiting Diesel Salon is one of the highlights of my month!!

Just moved from San Francisco, where I was fiercley loyal, and desperately reliant on the infamous skills of the to EDO salon artists. So after putting off for one too many split ends I decided to try out a new salon. I decided on Diesel after recieving a stellar review from a friend and checking out what yelp had to say. I called on a Saturday and got in the same day! MARK was absolutely awsome; and answered my never ending line of questions, showed me multiple ways to style my hair, was fun to hang out with, and helped me decide how to undergo my next big veture...hightlights!
I paid $60 for the wash/cut/style, plus $10 tip... and worth it!
street parking was easy and i didn't have to worry about a meter or anything.

I get so many compliments on my highlights. Even strangers have stopped me to ask where i get my hair colored. The answer: Vinnie at Diesel. He's quite a talker, so don't go in expecting to enter a zen place. But he really knows his stuff. He is a good person, too. The people at the front desk are very courteous and friendly, too. They always make you feel welcome.

Today I decided to get a hair cut, after much a do with my wife she dared me to attempt to find a comparable stylist here in sunny San Diego. I have not had much luck. With that said, my search led me to the numerously reviewed but never understated Diesel Salon in Kensington. I called at about 11:30am after a brief but overtly cordial conversation with the receptionist they booked me for a 12pm haircut. Parking was easy and the staff was uber friendly. When I got there...they even offered me a signature Corona while I waited for my appointment with Stephanie. Nice touch. Stephanie was wonderful and she definitely has some skills. All in all, my experience was superb and I will definitely come back. Bring your checkbooks.
I went there with disastrous hair and came out with beautiful hair! Naomi is great! I'll def. be going there again! Probably my new fav. salon! Kind of pricey but absolutely worth it! Plus drinks are complimentary thank you very much! xD

I love this place. Megan is the cutest, sweetest thing EVER! When I first moved to San Diego I had no idea where the heck to get my hair cut and it was a sad state of affairs when I finally came upon Diesel. I went to her and I haven't been to anyone else in the 2 years since I've lived here. They always make me feel comfortable and they don't have the "we're so much cooler than you cuz we cut people's hair and you don't" vibe. Always a plus.
I truely believe when it comes to hair, you get what you pay for. If you got to a "salon" that's tring to pass off $16 weedwhacker sessions, (I'm not naming names, we'll just say it rhymes with Shmupercuts) as haircuts, this is not the place for you. You will be offended by paying $50+ for a haircut. The products are another story...I love that Diesel uses Bumble & Bumble. A little goes a long way and it's super high quality.
So come on Girl, you're ready to be a grown up! Go get a fancy pants haircut. You'll feel great!
