This place is friggin' amazing. I just moved out here from NY and have to say that what I'll miss most about LA when I return to the east coast is Diddy Riese. Never before have I waited in line for something so inexpensive and yet so worth it. Its actually quite simple but at the same time not so as I've never encountered a place like this before and I crave cookies and ice cream.
Word of wisdom: As you know there are lines. It rains once in a blue moon in LA. Hit up Diddy Reiss on those rainy days. No line.
"mMm Mmm good."
[First impression]
Ice Cream Sandwiches for $1.50!
More lines in LA. Get use to it especially if you're going to hit the tourist hot spots. It's not like it's the world's best or anything. But the price, the concept-- it adds something special to this little joint. And it's by far the cheapest and most satisfying dessert in town.
[Suggestion]
*Vanilla ice cream sandwiched between oatmeal raisin and white chocolate macadamia!
[Tip(s)]
*Pick two different cookies.
Perfect for a budget conscious sweet tooth fix!
I have no idea how Diddy Riese stays in business with prices like $1.50 for a choose your own cookie and ice cream filling to make a sandwich, cheap delicious warm muffins, or $1.00 for 3 cookies. However, if you are college student or stopping by UCLA for a medical appointment (and this is walking distance from UCLA) or just budget conscious in these economic times, Diddy's will hit the spot.
The line moves fast, they have wonderful coffee ice cream and my favorite cookie is the white chocolate macadamia nut. They do also have a snazzy peanut butter cookie, and some love the M & M cookies.
And men, you know many ladies have a fixin for chocolate... save a bit of money and tell her you're gonna skip dessert at the restaurant and take her to a favorite of the locals. She will think it's kitchy (in a good way) and you'll save some moola. :)
This place is super good, cookies are all warm and fresh, and they have great ice cream. Defiantly get an ice cream sandwich, you get to choose 2 cookies, any style you want, then you get to choose whatever ice cream you want, and it only cost $1.50. Definitely take an assorted dozen to whomever you love and they will love you back.
BTW the parking sucks around here so expect to do some looking for it.
Seriously.. how can you go wrong with two cookies holding together a big slab of ice cream? Mmmmm
Okay, before I say this, I must warn all Diddy Riese groupies that I am armed w/ pepper spray & a rock hard Lee Sandwiches baguette in case the mob of you guys (who are lining outside of Diddy Riese right now) plan on marching to Garden Grove & attacking me for this review.
Yes, there are a variety of cookies and ice cream flavors at this place but I find all of them pretty mediocre. The cookies are freshly made and pretty soft but the ice cream is standard, out of the tub Rite-Aid ice cream. Is that a bad thing? Not at all, but it ain't amazing either.
The thing that brings this place to 4 stars are the prices! A buck 50 for a big ice cream sandwich that you can make any way you'd like?! Well, sign me up! At that price I don't care where you got the ice cream from! So yes, if I was in the area, I would definitely hop into the intimidatingly long line that actually moves faster than you think. But living as far as I do from the place, I won't be visiting as much.
Good ice cream and cookies for the prices! It's a $1.50 for two cookies and a big scoop of ice cream. I actually couldn't finish the whole ice cream sandwich bc it was a little on the sweet side. I think it wouldn't hurt if the cookies were a little more on the chewy side, but I can't really complain for a $1.50 dessert which is hard to find anywhere nowadays.
The workers are pretty fast so it the line goes by quickly. Parking is a bit difficult in the area as well.
the price is right. would never wait in line for ice cream. and the cookies were wayyyyy too sweeet. i mean, if you can eat frosted flakes and lucky charms and crap your tongue could probably tolerate such insults.
but for me? its a bit too much. i would have to drink at least TEN glasses of milk to finish one sandwhich.
i had chocolate chip and white macadamia with vanilla. and i split it. and i still couldnt handle it. perhaps im just weak. i also dont want diabetes in a cup
This is really just an ice cream parlor of sorts. With the addition of baked goods, namely cookies. This place can have very long waits sometimes, especially during dinner time and afterward. The place is extraordinarily popular with the UCLA students.
The ice cream isn't anything spectacular, so don't expect too much. They don't have that many flavors, but have enough to fit a majority of favorites. I had the coffee ice cream sandwich with white chocolate macadamia cookies. The ice cream wasn't bad, but nothing amazing. The cookies were actually not that pleasing to me. They have a unique texture that is neither soft, chewy, hard, nor crunchy. It's more like a.. Crisp.. Texture. Very odd to describe. Not one I would expect from a cookie, but not exactly a great one either. When I have an ice cream sandwich with cookies, I expect the cookies to be somewhat soft. Nope. The ice cream sandwich was very hard to eat. Almost impossible to bite from top to bottom comfortably, and they give it to you in a cup with a spoon. So, it's not really an ice cream sandwich anymore, but more like a scoop of ice cream with two cookies on the side.
Not that great of an experience. I do think their prices are awesome though. If I ever come back, I'd probably just go for a scoop of ice cream.
Dear Mr. Diddy,
I love you. Your excellent cookies will make me happy for the rest of the week. 1 dozen cookies on my counter and yet still have money in my wallet. Thank you oh master of cookies, Thank you.
Sincerely,
Your 1181th Review
HELLLOOOOO SWEETS!!!
the cookies appear all plain jane..but they taste like absolute heaven!
My personal favorite is the cinnamon sugar and the chocolate chip with walnuts!!!
but all types are delicious and I am pretty sure you will come back for more!!
ice cream cookie sandwich: 1.50!!
a brownie: 45 cents.
a cookie: 35 cents.
a dozen: 3.50..i think.
I got a dozen cookies, a cookie sandwich & a brownie for 5.50ish...
what more can you ask for? :)
Ice cream sandwiches for $1.50? Nothing fancy about it, but you know exactly what you're getting: two normal cookies with Dreyers ice cream in between. Plus it's super cheap.
You can choose from around 10 different kinds of cookies and 12 different types of ice cream. I'd recommend something but it's all about preference, so anything's a safe bet!
Throw in a cup of coffee for like 85 cents or something. Then walk around Westwood Village while enjoying your cheap goodies!
On a side note, people have "warned" me that these ice cream sandwiches are big. Call me a glutton, but I didn't think it was that big. I can easily have one by myself.
My friends were REALLY excited to take me here. $1.50 for a build-your-own cookie ice cream sandwich. Or 3 fresh-baked cookies for $1.00. The prices speak for themselves!!
The store isn't very big, so of course there was a line out the door. But the line moved very quickly because they have multiple cashiers. The sweet smell of the cookies wafts out the door as you're waiting in line. I was so surprised that a dozen cookies and an ice cream sandwich didn't cost me an arm and a leg at a place like this. I had a chocolate chip cookie and strawberry cheesecake chunk sandwich. Of course my friend made fun of me- he said it was a brave combination for a first experience. But hey, I've had chocolate chip cookies and I've had strawberry cheesecake ice cream (one of my favorite flavors of ice cream) before... so why not?!
It's such a simple, but genius idea!! The only downside is that parking is a headache. Good thing I was able to park at my friend's apartment complex at The Plaza! We walked over and back, so it makes me feel less guilty about all the sweets I scarfed down along the way.
Holy sweet snacks, Batman!
Okay, so it's *just* a variety of cookies, and *just* some selections of ice cream. What's the big deal? The big deal is that you get to pick out two cookies (two different flavors, if you feel like it) and they wedge a serious scoop of whatever ice cream you want in the middle, wrap it in a napkin, and sell you the ambrosia for only $1.50.
$1.50! C'mon, what's not to love about that? Oh, ice cream's not your thing? Then you can get a dozen of their homemade cookies for $3.75. BAM, take that!
I know Diddy Riese isn't loved by all, but the line out the door suggests most people will come away happy. I make a point to go out of my way and swing by here every time I'm driving through LA.
This place is great, cheap and quick (kinda like a good date)!
The prices are almost too low it's hard to believe. I prefer the Chocolate Chip with Vanilla ice cream combo. You can bring your date here after dinner and it wont set you back more than $5.
You must try if you havent been.
Came here for one of their infamous ice cream sandwiches... the line was out the door, which I bet is normal and the wait wasn't too bad. But the cookies are way too sweet... and I LOVE sugar! I felt my teeth rotting with every bite that the hub and I sharing one couldn't even fish half. The price is totally worth coming and trying though.
OH my. If you want to see a grown woman turn into a giddy little school girl, just take her to Diddy Riese. This place is amazing - your choice of a heaping helping of ice cream between two huge, freshly baked cookies for $1.50?! Thank goodness this place is almost 400 miles away from me 'cause I'd be in line everyday!
Bottom line, this place is definitely worth the detour (and subsequent waiting in line) when you're in LA, can't wait to go back!
A friend of mine told me about this place and how famous it is. Being that I am from Arizona I never heard of it. On a trip to LA he took me here and It was the best ice cream sandwich I ever had. It is one of those places you just keep hearing about, possibly will even see on tv.
We went on a weekday in the middle of the day so there was no line. The atmosphere of this college area is a great addition to the cookies and the freshness of the cookies just add to the experience.
The prices are amazing, especially in this economy right now. It's a relief to see that this place is so popular and still cheap. I recommend this place to anyone who is in the area or willing to make a drive. I mean I drove all the way from Phoenix must be good right? YES!!!
I'm a believer!! I never thought a cookie could taste so good! We passed by Diddy Riese on our way to lunch and there was a huge line...we came back after lunch and there was still a line! Fortunately, the line goes by real fast thanks to the quick and friendly employees who greet you with a big smile instead of rushing for your order to get to the next customer.
I got the ice cream/cookie sandwich for only $1.50!!! Yes, it used to be $1 or so I heard, but $1.50 is still a really good deal. It'd still be packed if they charged more because their cookies are fresh and their ice cream is amazing! I decided on a cinnamon cookie and a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie with mint chocolate chip. WOW. I don't know how to explain it. I loved the texture of everything. Not too hard, not too soft. Melts in your mouth!!
The only problem I had was actually eating it. The ice cream isn't hard so biting into the sandwich causes the ice cream to ooze. BUT I'M NOT COMPLAINING!! I'll definitely be back everytime I visit my sister at UCLA. Another thing is that it's a big dessert to eat after a huge meal. I suggest getting Diddy Riese as a snack or dessert after a long walk around Westwood. It was too much for me to finish on a full stomach.
This place is incredible!!!
i usually order the ice cream sandwich with a chocolate chip and white chocolate chip cookie and cookies and cream ice cream and it always hits the spot. The cookie taste really fresh and the ice cream is really good too and it only cost 1.50!
i live in baldwin park and i sometimes make the drive all the way out there just to get their ice cream sandwiches.
After Q-Cina Green Cafe Dessert
My friend who lived in L.A. had never heard of Diddy Riese, so I told her about it and told her it was in the hip and trendy college town of Westwood and that we had to go!
There is always a super long line at Diddy Riese and for good reason. You get delicious ice cream sandwiches for only a $1.50! Hell yeah! Always worth the wait in line as the employees do move rather quickly plus the line gives you the opportunity to schmooze it up with the UCLA peeps.
Those who have read my previous reviews know that I am a lover of choices. Well there is no shortage here. They have brownies, Italian Ice, Hot Dogs, and the Star of the Show their Ice Cream Sandwiches, which provide you with even more choices. You choose what type of cookies you want (you can even choose two different types if you want!) and you choose one ice cream, which they have quite a few choices (not like 31 Flavors or anything, but still plenty) I chose the Chocolate Cookies with White Chocolate Chips and Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream. http://www.yelp.com/bi... The contrast between the warm chocolaty cookie and the cold strawberry cheesecake IC was amazing! I had hit a dessert home run!
The place only accepts cash, so make sure that before you jump in that long line that you at least have a couple bucks on you! Also parking in this city can prove to be difficult.
I love the idea! But, why so cheap? Heck..why would I complain? It's good! I tried this place with a group of friends when I went to LA. They were saying how good it was and all i needed was $1.50 to buy myself a delicious sandwich ice cream. There were a variety of cookie and ice cream choices. If I remember correctly I had the oatmeal cookie with vanilla ice cream. It was YUM. You can tell the cookie was freshly baked and not some old stale or hard one. With the crowd they get it is impossible to not get fresh cookies anyway. Great for those with a sweet tooth!
I have been eating these cookies for awhile now ever since my sis' girlfriend brought them back to SF for us. But even though I tasted them many many times I always wanted to come in and see the store.
So finallllly, my bday was spent in LA and of course I had to bring 2 dozen home. Oh and I got a ice cream sandwich (cookie dough).
Line is always out the door, (so I've seen and heard) but it did not take long to get it. They were fast and wanted you out. Small shop.
For the price it cannot be beat: although they tasted different from last time they were still yummy.
I have these Alzheimer moments. Whenever I want to come here I can never remember the name. I have to back my way into it. Sean Combs ... Puffy ... P. Diddy ..... Diddy Riese. I'm there.
In these inflationary times I can never remember the price either. Dollah ..... Dollah twenty-five .... Dollah Fiddy.
I'm an original customer, so when they raised the price to $1.50 I was mad. But I'm a customer for life. They are not going to drive me off to Coolhaus. I like my ice cream sandwiches stationary, not on the roll.
The guys that work here are just great. The crowds and the pressure never get to them. The line always appears interminable, but they scoop super fast, and move it right along.
Regretfully I have to take 1 Star off for Dryers ice cream. Still the combination with their cookies tastes incredibly good. Maybe 4.5.
ICE CREAM OR COOKIES? WHY NOT BOTH?! =D
Pros:
-I don't ever remember them shaving shaved ice but now they do.
-Assorted cookies to buy separate or put them together to make an ice cream sandwich.
-You can mix and match your cookies for the ice cream sandwich.
-It's thick! They put one scoop of ice cream on the cookie and squish it together. YUUMMMM... =)
-They also have specials at the end of the night or day old cookies for sale.
-I always come here at night when it's freezing cold and it still hits the spot.
Cons:
-Trying to find parking in this college area sucks!
New career opportunities? - the relentlessly glorious weather? - palm trees every which way you look? All worthy reasons to move to Southern California, sure - but not for me.
When I tell people I'm leaning hard towards moving to LA for the fast food, they at first think I'm joking, looking for an impish glint in my eye - but all they are met with is steely eyed seriousness. When I reiterate my determination and the reasons for it, and they realize that I'm being 100% on the level, they either laugh incredulously, or shake their head derisively, or pat me condescendingly on the head and reassure me that I'm doing SO well for someone just released from institutional care.
Well, screw 'em - all the more In n Out Burger for me. And ALL the more Diddy Riese for me too, bitches! This shit is beyond belief, and I can't believe I missed it my first time out. Exhibit 1A in the "Sum is Greater than Its Parts" Hall of Fame, Diddy Riese's famed ice cream sandwiches are divine perfection made out of less than perfect parts. Not the best ice cream you've ever had - nor the best cookies you've ever had (but they are very very good). But fused together, they complement each other to the point of being an adequate proof of the harmonic convergence of all things in the universe.
Add to that the price - $1.50 for this monstrous thing - are you shitting me! and LA denizens have the audacity to bitch about the price having gone up. In Boston, I could safely get away with a 300% markup on these things and people would lap it up.... On second thought, maybe I'll make my millions here first in the knock off ice cream sandwich racket before pulling up stakes. That bungalow in Santa Monica I had my eye on isn't going to buy itself on the paraprofessional wages I plan on earning after my migration.
Very good and very cheap. Excellent cookies. A one of a kind place.
Meh.
Cookies = cold (not even warm) & avg. Ice cream (Dreyers) = avg.
honestly was very underwhelmed considering the rave reviews. Trader Joe's sells ice cream cookie sandwiches which are actually far better. Try the TJ's version and compare it to Diddy Riese & u'll see.
About a month ago I moved out to L.A. A week after my moving one of my BFF's comes to town for a visit. We go to dinner at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles and trek over here to Diddy Riese.
I'd never heard of it at the time, but was more than willing to try it. Who'd ever turn town an ice-cream sandwich. I probably should have gotten the staple and gotten the sandwich, but I hadn't had shaved ice in awhile so I went for it. I was actually hesitant at first because there was vanilla ice cream underneath the Ice. Ice and Vanilla? Didn't seem like a good match, but those syrups on top of all of it made it so delicious. Not only was that great, I got to try the sandwiches my friend bought and she ended up buying me a cookie. The prices here are unbeliveably cheap.
I've been wanting to come back here since then, but have not had the time. I plan on taking some classmates one night we take a break from Studio at sci-arc.
I feel old saying this but I remember when their Ice Cream Sanwiches were an even $1.00! But then again it wasn't that long ago and I guess I'm getting old!
I used to work in Westwood and one of my favorite things was these addictive and cheap (now $1.50) Ice Cream Sandwiches! So here is the deal, park at the lot on Broxton generally the parking is free for the first two hours...and even though there will be a line at Diddy Riese, it won't take you two hours to get this little treat!
For those that don't know why these are so special is 1- the price 2- you pick any two cookies you want (and they are nice sized cookies) and any scoop of ice cream you want...the world is your oyster!
I am a fan of Diddy Riese and it is worth stopping by if you are in the area.
SLEEPER ALERT
I know the ice cream sandwich is the favorite here, but a good sleeper item is the shaved ice. It's like Hawaiian ice, and you can get a scoop of ice cream on top.
Look, let's face it, you and I have nothing in common.
You're a simpleton and I'm a sophistiqué.
To you, a salad is iceberg and thousand island.
To you, Disneyland is a vacation.
To you, Kraft slices are "cheese."
As I said, we have NOTHING in common.
Until now.
Oh my flipping goodness how good are these Diddy Riese cookies!!!? YUM! Aren't they great!? Do you mind if I sit next to you? I have some extra napkins!
I got one with a chocolate chip cookie on one side and a flaky, rich peanut butter cookie on the other side and peanut cup ice-cream in the middle and it was sooooooo good. SO good! Wow.
Sorry about what I said before about us having nothing in common. I've learned now that just because something is popular, doesn't mean it's bad
So, let me ask you, what is "NASCAR?"
As has been stated: $1.50, yummy ice cream, cold/hard cookies, long line.
I got the chocolate chip cookie dough between chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies. It was good once it got into my mouth, but its journey there was a bit of a struggle. How is one supposed to brave two hard cookies with one plastic spoon? What really would have sent me home is waaarm gooey eye-rolling-to-back-of-head cookies. I found myself a bit disappointed, to my chagrin, 'cause I reaaally wanted to LOVE this place for the price alone.
Oh, and the line wasn't so bad for me. Firstly, it gave my indecisive ass a nice, thorough chance to figure out what I wanted; Secondly, watching the drunkards of UCLA howling profanities into the moon was smuch fun yay; Finally, I suppose it's a part of the whole "experience". Plus, I did go on a Saturday night.
I don't get it. I just don't. How are there not hundreds of these places?!?
Cookie ice cream sandwiches are some of the best desserts ever. At Diddy Riese you pick the homemade cookies you want on each side and pick the ice cream you put in the middle.
Did I mention it's only $1.50 for a huge dessert? That's why there is a line down the street at all hours. It moves quickly though - don't let it deter you. Wait for any amount of time to experience DR.
I'm going to go ahead and say this place is BRILLIANT!!!
The kabillion good reviews tell it like it is. Our experience:
1) line out the door
2) worth it
Will be back as often as possible.
How can such an easy concept attract 1000+ reviewers, plus the additional million people who have tried this place? 1.50 with no tax for two cookies, ice cream AND at no additional charge: a potential muffin top. Freakin' amazing place, but I'm so glad i'm not within distance of this place because although my pockets would be full... so would my pants and waistline.
These cookies are simply amazing. So soft and yummy. And they go perfectly into the ice cream sandwiches they make there. At 3 cookies for a dollar, they're relatively cheap. I almost always buy a dozen to take home. There's always a line out the door, but the wait is most definitely worth it. You should eat these cookies now.
Now that's what I'm talking about!
Strawberry cheesecake chunk ice cream in between a white chocolate macadamia nut and oatmeal raisin cookie.
All for only a buck 50!
Alright Mr. Diddy.. now hurry and open one up in northeastern Los Angeles already!
Love this place. Okay, truth be told, I don't like the long line but it is well worth the wait.
The cookies are super and gigantic. I think the price is great too.
I'd recently visited a cousin of mine who's a PhD student at UCLA. She wanted to make sure I tried this place before I returned to Nor-Cal.
Create your own ice cream sandwich for $1.50? Cool concept!
I had a white chocolate macadamia/snickerdoodle sandwich with vanilla ice cream.
WOW.
The cookies were hella tasty which let me bypass the fact that they serve Dryer's ice cream (meh). You can also by a batch of cookies as well (they're made on-site). I plan to do that when I visit her during holiday break and bring a few batches home. I'm greedy like that.... :-)
