4 reviews for Diana's Mexican Food Restaurant & Deli
diana's is quirky. it's like eating family style mexican food in the twilight zone . they have a nativity scene inside. across from a giant swordfish.
they have horchata.
I really mean 3.5 because I'm erring on the good side. Diana's is pretty clean and homey restaurant in Huntington Park. Not the best neighborhood, but that's where you get the BEST food. They have a big seafood and breakfast menu. I got two enchiladas, which were decent, but if you like fajitas you should definitely give this place a try.
Granted, I haven't had good mexican in a while but this place is for sure somewhere I would come back again. The salsa is really spicey and the green sauce really just put my mouth on fire. It was hearty and the portions were good. The only thing is, after I was done I felt so fat and unhealthy. =P Oh, and they serve alcohol. Nice.
So this one is fairly well out of my neighborhood but we were out at a friends daughters 15th birthday party and afterward were looking for a place to grab a bite..and a beer. We saw this place and did a random drop in a la Jonathan Gold of Counter Intelligence.
It was very nice and welcoming..big...clean...smelling really good. Family type place. Family run and catering to families. Boisterous and laughing good times sort of place if you know what I mean.
The menu is central (probably Jalisco) Mexican with some regional twists. We tried the fried tacos (Tacos Dorados), a chile relleno, and the Carnitas. All were large and delicious...especially the carnitas which could have fed two easily and were what they are supposed to be. This was exactly what I needed after too many shots and beer and sun and dancing etc.
Affordable prices, great service, cheap beer.... and one more Tequila shot to kill the beast.
Bonus was the music thing going on. A guy (perhaps blind? not sure) playing an reverbish electric guitar finger style (which sort of created a hawaiian thing which was interesting) while a woman sang. Holy Crap!...this woman could really sing! I don't know if she is an amateur or a pro or what but I have heard some Mexican female singers in my time...even saw Rocio Durcal once live...and this woman has that kind of purity in her tone. We hung out an extra 45 minutes just to hear her sing and that is saying something for jaded old me.
I did ask the waitress who the singer was and she said "Alicia" like she was a friend so maybe she is a neighborhood lady. I should have asked how often she sang but did not. I will update this post if I can find out more just in case there are romantic music fans out there.
My friends took me here for lunch one day. It's an average Mexican restaurant. All the UPS men congregate here for lunch, and one of my pals dragged us here to scam on him. Anyway, I had the nachos. They were all right. I sampled my friend's pozole. Aight. The next day we went to Avila's and Diana's was blown out of the water. Avila's is SO much better.
