There is something fantastic about looking over one shoulder at the Carson Valley, and then over the other at Lake Tahoe after stepping off a lift.

No -- there is a lot fantastic about that.

Diamond Peak is a great little gem of a mountain; not very big, but very vertical; and that is what matters.  My second time there reinforced just what a nice little place it is; if you're doing a ski holiday, pick up some tickets at costco -- you'll have a good time.

On the weekend after christmas, there were lines at the lower lifts, but never more than 5 minutes.  Love that the lifts use moving sidewalks to help you on -- definitely good for the beginners and kiddies.

The view from the top is fantastic; beautiful panoramic on top of the Sierras.  The ride down is fun -- the trails tend to pull towards powdery, imo, even when other resorts are, well, icy.

The runs are fun, there's not a ton of them, but there are plenty for a day out in the snow.  Staff, in general, seems friendlier and happier than the other resorts I've been to.

I'm a newb and Diamond Peak was my Everest. This was my second time skiing in my life. Diamond Peak knew that and didn't make fun. The bunny slopes was where my ass was planted most of the time. We did a half-day, and the snow was still pretty good. Not icey and not too choppy. My experienced friend told me that, cos how would I know right?

The staff was really nice. I didn't get off the ski lift the first time and the guy behind the controls was cool about it. Anyway, I'm not one to be embarrased. I fell enough times to knock any dignity out of me.

The prices were the best part--$23 for beginners half day!

NEWB-CERTIFIED!

Everyone decided to jack up their rates for New Years, except for Diamond Peak which stayed at a wallet-friendly $49.

They advertise themselves as family friendly, which I think means "we don't have to be that great because we say we're family oriented." There's one run worth doing, the Great Flume, and I ended up doing this one over and over again: some good downhills, a small terrain park, and plenty of opportunity to get lost in the trees. Crystal Ridge is neat once or twice to see the lake as you're coming down, but it's way too crowded and doesn't have much interesting on the trail. It didn't look like they had any black diamonds without moguls, so I avoided those completely.

If you're nearby, looking to save some scrilla, and there's some fresh snow, it's worth checking out.  Under any other conditions, I'd probably check out somewhere else.

I like the smaller resorts. Less of a line and the staff is more friendly. And the best part is that the tickets are prices way more reasonably than other big ski resorts.

Diamond Peak also offers great beginner classes for the first-timers. Their green runs are do-able and I was happy to discover that the double blacks are JUST AS CRAZY as the other resorts'. (Needless to say I turned around and went down a blue instead!)

There isn't much food selection, but parents, if you want to sit at the lodge and watch your kids fall on their tushies, Diamond Peak's got that as well.

I will definitely re-visit this place! :)

I had not skied since childhood, and came here with the sister and the (now) ex. I was worried and thought I might take a lesson, but ended up renting and getting  a pass instead. I did a few runs down the easiest green run (the ones that the kiddies learn on), and then did the wide green run a time or two. For a green run, Lodgepole was quite steep and fast. But, nonetheless I tackled a few of the blue runs that go along the top, and had no problem with those. A great place to learn, I had a lot of fun without feeling overwhelmed. Never had to consult a trail map, didn't feel like I wasn't keeping up, there weren't recklessss skiers or boarders, etc. Plus, it is close to home and doesn't need to be an all day affair.

Not that many trails at this place.  But if you get to the top, the view is amazing.  Try to get to the top at 3 different times of the day - morning, noon, and late afternoon.  Great, unique views each time.

There are only 2 green trails so if you bring beginners, it can get boring fast.  The blues are not bad - felt like I was skiing in the East coast again as it was so flat and slick.

As the day went by, the temperature kept going up.  By 2 pm, I recall seeing the temp at 41 degrees F.  Wow!

Overall, decent place.  But with any ski resort, I go to another one before coming here again.

Went boarding after few days of storming, lovely powder on a sunny day in the middle of the week.  The views cannot be beat, the best views of Tahoe I have ever seen since coming up here as a child.   It was also nice that it was only a short 25 min. drive from the Stateline and what a beautiful drive.

There are only 6 lifts but the trails are awesome considering my intermediate skill.  The over all feel of the resort was mellow and no chips on any shoulders -workers or other patrons. This was the only resort with conveyor belts at the lifts, really weird velcro conveyor belt that catches you after a tiny jump from the gates.  As a previous poster said, the gates are like the X-games gates, 1-2-3-4 where you wait to open to move for your the chair.  Also, take lunch at the Snowflake Lodge on the mountain and eat with the most amazing view of Lake Tahoe, really, no words can describe the beauty.

Also, would definitely recommend for beginners.  They have an awesome little beginners area which is nice so they don't need to hit the slopes until they are totally comfortable.  They have Burton training for snowboarders.

I will be hitting up DP a few more times before heading back to SF, was going to check out other north shore resorts but why with this beautiful short drive, great slopes and not attitudes.

Maybe if we had better ski conditions this weekend... I won't discuss the hard packed snow conditions, it would be biased, had it we had nice fluffy snow.

The resort is situated awkwardly.  When I was there, they had 2 lifts.  One green lift and then another one to the top -- Crystal Express?      All other black diamonds were off shoots of the either Great Flume or Crystal Ridge.

For  a beginner intermediate skier, this place is freaky scary.  The runs are very narrow.  Even when we didn't have that many people there this weekend, I had a couple of close encounters and a collision with a beginner skier.  And no, I didn't cause the collisions, no could I have avoided it.

Terrain park?  More like a terrain lane.  Just 2 jumps.  Not like I was going to use them anyway... :D

But the view of north Lake Tahoe is breath taking.  I can stay there all day glaring out at the view and having a nice long relaxing picnic -- if weather holds.  So yeah, for that view, it's awesome.    Bring a camera!

Just don't expect a good ski day.

Price wise, it's $39 for 1/2 day.

Diamond Peak is an oddly shaped ski resort.  Despite a puny acreage that bests only Boreal and Donner Ski Ranch, it's actually in the top half of the class vertical-wise, beating Sugar Bowl, Homewood, Mt Rose and Alpine.  That's because it's really just one long valley and accompanying ridge.  Indeed, the trail map emphasizes this verticality, and makes it look a bit precipitous and intimidating.  True, there's really only one green run (and it's very flat and crowded), but intermediate skiers should have no problem taking The Great Flume or Ridge Run down from the top.  The Crystal Express chair really maximizes your time on the runs, too.

Now, the inclement weather prevented me from seeing Homewood's legendary lake views, but I don't see how they could beat Diamond Peak's.  Snowboarding into the watery sunset on Ridge Run, you could almost imagine you were a surfer.  Indeed, on the hot day I was here, I was getting some major SoCal deja vu (except that there weren't patches of dirt on the runs).  Another great way to take advantage of the views is to lunch at Snowflake Lodge on the ridgetop (assuming you don't mind the prices and limited selection--$12.50 for a pulled pork sandwich?!?).

One thing to watch out for: they can actually run completely out of parking here.  As in, the parking attendant will just shrug at you.  So get here early or find a shuttle from Incline Village.

Huge Storm?

Don't worry.

Go to Diamond Peak.

Even in the worst and heaviest snows, the only place you feel it is at the top of the main quad.

It's sheltered and wooded and (sadly) kinda small.  But I've had some of the best powder days here, while Alpine, Squaw and  Sugar were all on "wind-hold".

24-hour Snow Phone
775-831-3211

Intimate feel.  Great for teaching that special someone you can't live without, the only thing you REALLY can't live without.  Try getting warm alcoholic concoctions at the little Snowflake Lodge (more like a room).

3/4-5 on a weekend when everyone else got slammed on Sunday, DP rocked-it sheltered style.  Enjoyed the most incredible views from the Snowflake Lodge (seriously, the best) and the hamburgers and tri-tip at the grill, not to mention the bar, were perfect.  Like having your own private ski hut with a million-dollar view.
halfway down eagle some guy is sitting there with his two friends overlooking the lake and says "when people talk shit about DP...they just don't know..." then he looked up and saw my hat (don't ask) and goes , "see...THIS guy knows what I'm talking about."  That pretty much sums it up.
Did I mention no lines and easy in-and-out (and back again if you don't like your boots) rentals?  My girlfriend just loved their rental shop and I loved the fact that her boots fit so well and she skied until they kicked us out.

Best Views of the Lake.

Best Prices (Look for Discount Coupons at the Local Grocery Stores)

Best Place to Ski/Board when the weather is sucking (cause it's usually pretty damn good here, regardless of what's happening on those other taller peaks).

Awesome hot toddies & tasty panini sandwiches in the upper chalet (Snowflake Lodge)

Rarely crowded, friendly staff, usually not too long of wait in line for the lift (hint, get up top and stay up top if you can).

The bad:
The ski rental place here can get seriously impacted on busier days, snowboards are often completely rented out , so if you're coming up for a holiday weekend, I suggest getting your gear someplace else.

Located approximately 25 miles from South Lake Tahoe (and thus most of the other resorts/lodging/clubs/casinos).

Small ski resort on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe.  This little gem is not for advanced skiers/snowboarders outs to gets their fill.  The runs are short, narrow and nothing too difficult.  With that said, this place will satisfy other motives.

This place is great for beginners and intermediates.  I had heard the lessons and rentals are friendly and professional.  It is in close proximity to the North Shore of Tahoe and not too far from Reno, so you're lodging options are great.  It won't cost you an arm and a leg to ski here and deals are to be had through Costco and http://Snowbomb.com.  This past week, we purchased vouchers from Costco that you redeem at the Diamond Peak ticket window, 2 for $70.  Not bad, cuz most places are over $50/person, ouch!

Now along with the benefits I had just mentioned, the real reason to head on out here, is simply, the spectacular and breath-taking views of Lake Tahoe.  Diamond Peak is perched right over the lake and some of the runs appear to fall off into the lake.  So pack up them skis/snowboards, bring a sense of adventure, and do not, I repeat, do not forget the camera.

Diamond Peak.  Small place and I like to think has a lot of skiiers, but if you're in the village, a good snow day will make it good.  They don't have a lot of trails which is a bit of a bummer, but the crystal express has a nice view at the top [can see the lake], followed by two decently long trails down: go right and it's more fun, but go left for the scenic route view of the lake and lodge the entire way down.  Unfortunately this isn't the first place to get snow and in bad parts of the season will start to show brown on the trails.  I had an unfortunate day on ice when it was getting slushy midday; I was with a bunch of friends so I kept going down the runs doing disservice to my board and ended up tearing my labrum in my right shoulder on a bad fall.  Upside is that it had a BEAUTIFUL view from the top.

It is nearly impossible for me to be objective about Diamond Peak. For me this is like rating your backyard as a kid growing up. I started skiing here in 1974(it was Ski Incline then) and put in many seasons where I skied more than 100 days at this resort.

FIrst if you have kids that need to learn how to ski. This is the place. The Bee Ferrato Child Ski Center, is perhaps the best children's ski school in the country. Bee is a dynamic Kiwi who has literally written the book, in cooperation with a child education phd, on how to teach children skiing. I am a little biased since I worked for her but she and her ski school are wonderful.

Second this place is never closed because of wind or storms. I have had some epic powder days at Diamond Peak when every other resort in the basin is shut down.

But the reason for only three stars, is Diamond Peak just does not have the vertical to compete with the big resorts. It is a great family resort and you can find some challenging terrain but this is truly an intermidiate ski hill so it is stuck at three stars.

UPDATE 2:  1/15/08:  This is unofficial, but they are keeping the lifts open until 4:30 PM, so you can ride longer.  Woohoo!

UPDATE 1:  1/14/08:  Took my neice up here yesterday and it was great, as always.  Just thought I would mention the sort of weird "conveyer belts" at the lifts at the bottom of the mountain.  When the gate opens for you to approach the chair lift, you are supposed to step on the conveyer belt and NOT MOVE...for those of us who have been doing this for a while it is a little counter intuitive.  The chair comes to you and scoops you up.  Aside from that odd experience it was a banner day!  This should be a great benefit for beginners, so they don't bust ass when they are trying to get in position to get on the lift.
-------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------
4.5 STARS really...there isn't anything I dislike about Diamond Peak...

1 STAR-Location..close to Reno/Sparks & Carson City & RNO airport
1 STAR-Price point...fair pricing for lift tickets, instruction, packages
1 STAR-learn to ride/ski programs and packages
1 STAR-variety of season passes...anytime, mid-week, & beginner
1 STAR-beautiful vistas of the Lake....STUNNING!
minus 1/2 star because it can be unchallenging for advanced riders/skiers

WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT DIAMOND PEAK?
Location, Location, Location...
closest Lake Tahoe resort to Reno/Sparks and Carson City (30 miles)
If you are flying in to RNO International (lol) Airport...from RNO you can go direct to Incline Village on the North Lake Tahoe Express bus.
Another perk of its locale is the way it is situated in the mountains.  The terrain is fairly sheltered from the sometimes brutal Tahoe winds that whip the crap out of you at other places like Mt. Rose (ugh!)...or paralyze the lifts of bigger resorts like Alpine, Sqaw, et. al.

PRICE POINT....
Diamond Peak is not only a fun place to ride/ski, but the lift tickets don't cost a fortune.  Thus, if you are a student, senior, or just trying NOT to squander all your hard earned dough on some R & R time, then you should check out their packages and deals...especially on their website http://www.diamondpeak....  Don't forget about your Tahoe Card if you hold one.  You can purchase them at http://www.tahoecard.com or at Costco in Reno, Sparks, and Carson City.

Lift Ticket prices for the winter 2007-2008 season are as follows:
(they also have package pricing and family pricing)

All-Day Individual Lift Tickets...
Adult & Interchangeable Parent Pass (ages 18-59) $48
Youth (13-17) $38
Kiddo (7-12) & Senior (60-79) $18
pipsqueak (my term, not theirs...age 6 & under) FREE
geezers (80 & over...again, my term) FREE

Half-Day Individual Lift Tickets (begins 12:30 PM)
Adult $ 37
Youth  $29
Kiddo/Senior $14

GREAT PLACE TO LEARN TO RIDE/SKI...
Not only do they have a well-established learn to ski program, but also a Burton Learn-to-Ride Center...I dislike the Burton business model, but they do make a flexible board...which makes for a more "forgiving" experience when first learning.  So heck, why not?!

SEASON PASSES....
They offer a variety...even a beginner season pass, which is so cool if you are just learning....so be sure to check their website for one that works best for you.

Views of the Lake...truly stunning!...

Meh, this resort was alright.  For sure it's not my favorite.  We tried this resort after a friend told us she really liked it.

The bottom run was really crowded, and people took their time sitting on the run.  I ran into several groups of people just sitting on the run.  Although this was annoying, I am advanced enough to maneuver around them.  I am not skilled enough, however, to maneuver around the stupid people who can't figure out how to get out of the unloading zone.  We ran into so many thoughtless skiers and snowboarders who were doing stupid things into the unloading zone, it was ridiculous.

Like I told my friends: If someone said they were going to board at Diamond Peak, and wanted to know if I wanted to go... I would.  But, I wouldn't plan to go there on my own.

Incline Village is a neat small place hidden in the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Its excellent for beginners and i can see it as a good place to go if Mt. Rose has its usual windy troubles.
If your staying in Reno:
1) Mt rose has half its lifts closed OR
2)Have a family OR
3)is a beginner OR
4)Wants to see an excellent view of Lake Tahoe on the upper ridge runs
This is a good place to go.
But if your from the Bay Area, getting here takes a bit more effort and time. It is a nice quiet place and i do like their nifty racing gate and treadmill lift system, but unless i'm staying in reno or the north shore, i may not be visiting Diamond Peak as much.

Diamond Peak has been around for years- was called Ski Incline. They had the very first snow making equipment in the basin mostly since they face the Southern skies and may have issues from time to time keeping their snow pack. Great views. Eat at the upper lodge deck for your own bird's eye view of the lake but bring your own snacks. 3 updated quad chairs. 3 original lifts. Best during mid-week. Great place for kids to learn. Not much advanced terrain compared to neighboring sites.

This was my old local resort when I lived up the hill. It's a tiny place so don't expect KT22 from Squaw here. However it's not the expensive, not very crowded and it's got some of the best views of Lake Tahoe around. They've got these crazy conveyor belts on the lifts and it gets really windy sometimes but again it's a cool little place if you don't want to endure the tourist crush and bustle of the other resorts on Tahoe.

OK, you've got to take this with a grain of salt as this is the only ski resort I've ever been to, but if you're a risk averse beginner like me (my fingers are my livelihood!) then I can heartily recommend Diamond Peak.  Even on a busy day after Xmas we got our boots and skis quickly and with care.  I took a beginner lesson that had only six of us and lasted about two hours.  With the instructor we bunny sloped it about four times, so by the time I was let loose I was cool with it.  Good times were had and I'd go back for round two.

Went here when my relatives had a vacation house in Incline Village. I learned to ski here. Very nice. Small (I went to Squaw once and was awed at how big it was)... I vote 5 stars as I suck, and I still suck... all the blues and greens are good for me. The blacks and double diamond blacks (though I didn't go on them) didn't seem that difficult here. (On a side note, nothing can compare to that little piece of double diamond black I see at the oh so crappy Los Angeles resort Mountain High... that one has this almost vertical DDB.)

We love the kid friendliness, its being right in Incline and the cafe at the top of the Lakeview lift with the spectacular, yes, Lake View. And the Snugglers are not too bad either.  Parking is a pain, but we always seem to work it out.  This is a fantastic place for new skiers and especially families with kids to come and enjoy the beauties of the Sierras together!!

Best thing about Diamond Peak is that it's never super crowded.  Sure, between Christmas and New Years, it can get crowded.  But NOT BY THE BUSLOADS like in the other resorts.

It also has friendly staff, and incredible view.  Snowflakes lodge is a nice place to take a break and warm up.  The base lodge is a bit undersized, but the food isn't super expensive (not cheap, mind you, but burgers & fries can be had for less than $10).

The resort is small--about 600 acres, I believe--but the vertical drop is respectable at 1800'.  If you get to the top of the mountain, it's a pretty long 2.5 mile run down to the base.

Great place for families!  Not a great place for real intense skiers.
