In Newton, Challah is a cutthroat industry. In fact, other than Boston Red Sox playoff tickets, there is nothing more sought after than a fresh baked challah on a Friday afternoon.
Diamond Bakery is the best in town. Their challah is sweet and golden, breadbraided with a light glaze. So good in fact, that the rumor on the street is that the goys around town buy it to make Challah French toast on Saturday morning...

Best challah in towm, my friends. For some reason, everyone in Cambridge and Somerville has Cheryl Ann's challah, which is totally inferior. Cheryl Ann's is too eggy and dense and the crust peels off all funny.
Diamond challah is the perfect light, fluffy consistency and perfectly eggy. When you slice it you know you've found perfection.
I don't know where to buy it in these parts, but I really wish someone would carry it. Growing up in Lexington, my mom would have to special order this stuff to be delivered to this French bakery near our house. I'm telling you, this stuff is like manna.
FYI, if you're the kind of person that thinks the "challah" at Shaw's is edible, you're not worthy of the Diamond. Plus, one year when I moved up in Maine, Shaw's made challah "in honor" of Passover. Yeah, right.
