One of the many places where you can enter a huge network of connecting trails. Smallish area for parking near the trailhead, with a larger lot nearby.

Miles of trails, but it's almost impossible to get lost as most trails loop back to convergence points. Good variety of wide trails and single track. Easy to very steep grades. So, whatever your abilities, you'll find routes to suit you. Perfect for unencumbered day hikes.

Very clean restrooms, picnic areas, recreational facilities - including a pool in the summer.

Yay for beautiful hikes in norcal.
Boo on all the massive piles of horse or cow poop we encountered.

Boo on almost dying several times while scaling a large mountain on our hike.
Yay for the refreshing breeze and breath taking views at the top.
Boo for all the graffiti somebody thought was a good idea to put at the top of the mountain we climbed

Yay for exceptionally clean bathrooms at the entrance by Monte Vista High. Boo for Monte Vista cuz they suck.
Boo on $6 for parking, but i'll let it go cuz obviously they do use some of that keep their bathrooms clean and fully stocked with seat covers, toilet paper, and soap. Seriously that NEVER happens at public restrooms especially if they are for a park or beach.

I can't recall the trail I took, but it was 6 miles.  The cows and horses were friendly--they don't want to be disturb and like to stick to their side of the fence.  I see people hiking on their own with their ipod, but as a woman in the middle of the mountain, I would suggest to bring a friend.

The park has no shades, but it's only 6 to 7 miles..so..tough it up!  Good scenery, clean, don't recall seeing a bathroom (not a concern for me), moderate, and easy to find.

3.5 stars
I enjoyed it.

Great Park. One of the most beautiful places in the world from my point of view. Great for trail running.

We did a 7.7 mile hike at Diablo Foothills Regional Park on Sat 2/9/08.  I thought it was just ok.

We started at the Livorna Staging Area which has FREE parking, but no bathrooms.

We did the Alamo Trail-Briones to Mt Diablo Reg Trail-Buckeye Ravine Trail-Stage Rd trail-Stonegate Trail-Foothills Trail.

Trail signs are lousy, we got turned around at one point.  No shade so don't go on a hot day.

Views of Mt Diablo, Castle Rock, & "camelback" ridges that form Shell Ridge are Good and make it worth going.

They completely renovated this place, it seems. From the bathrooms, to the pool, to the picnic area.. such a soothing, mellow place to fuel up before or after a nice, invigorating hike. Started off slow, then veered off the beaten path a bit. Awesome photo opps. An hour each way, not too long this time around. The lush greenery offset by streams that range from slight to super are a nice addition to the scenery. Was originally looking for some caves, but found only a psuedo one that was more like a hole in the rock. Will be back for sure. Just watch out for all of the horse poop. Some serious patties out there.

I haven't been in Concord for very long... I've been kind of down on the area for being less than exciting and stimulating.

But last night after I got home from my office in Oakland, I hopped on my bike...hit the Iron Horse Trail...rode through Lime Ridge ...and ended up in the Diablo Foothills in a short amount of time.

Peace and quiet, beautiful oaks, great views of Mt. Diablo and raptors circling the rock formations....and the potential to continue roaming adjacent areas for days.

I would've never known I was surrounded by the metropolitan Bay Area.

a plus for that side of the tunnel....

it's nice to know that there's a place like this in the middle of the bay area.  great trails to hike/bike.  you can drive up to the top if you don't feel like walking to the look out point.

nice peaceful haven to get away, but still in the bay area.

My "usual" dirt pedal- the Stage Road Trail, streams galore, all fun. Easy, all-flat route. Start out at Castle Rock parking lot- first, you're on East Bay Parks land, then across the gate, entering Mount Diablo State Park. Keep going until you feel like turning around back to the the parking lot. Just  take heed of other users, especially stop for cute female horseriders.

Diablo Foothills Regional Park is part of the patchwork of parks and open space areas on and around Mt. Diablo.  Located behind Castle Rock Regional Recreation Area and between the City of Walnut Creek's Shell Ridge Open Space and Mt. Diablo State Park, Diablo Foothills offers a great respite to anyone trying to escape the city (or the suburbs) and includes some classic oak studded hillsides, decent and convenient hiking, and broad views of Mt. Diablo and the surrounding valleys.  Unlike Shell Ridge, you will see very little of the surrounding cities from Diablo Foothills, and this particular park also gives you access to the back door of the adjacent state park.  In fact, you'll occasionally see state park boundary markers as you travel along the Stage Road Trail (the adjacent Pine Creek is the boundary between the two parks).  The Briones to Mt. Diablo Regional Trail will offer you some impressive views of Mt. Diablo and Castle Rocks, the connecting Buckeye Ravine Trail will take you down to Pine Creek and the base of Castle Rocks in no short order (consider yourself warned, it's a very steep trail), while the shell ridge loop trail offers some beautiful panoramic views without too strenuous of a hike.  As with any place in this area, the park can get a bit hot in the summer, but the Stage Road Trail along Pine Creek (starting from the Castle Rock Regional Recreation Area trailhead) is well shaded and also a nice place to visit in the spring when the water is flowing.  You can also gain access to the park from the trailhead at the Old Borges Ranch (just over the park boundary in the Shell Ridge Open Space), as well as from a less desirable trailhead along Livorna Road in Alamo.  We're very lucky to have parks like this available and so nearby.
