Truly outstanding studio.  Instructors are super knowledgeable and get to know you and your goals.  In other words, you won't be resting on your laurels.  You will get your money's worth.

I've been attending for 18 months or so - taking 2-3 classes a week here.  Mostly I do mat classes, but occasionally apparatus or privates when my budget allows.

Favorite mat instructors:  Carolina, Peter and Emily.  favorites because they encourage you and I get a much better workout.   Keegan is awesome with reformer classes.  Hands on.

Only negative?  You must really plan ahead to get into class - like months.    Also, could cost you a fortune in clothes.  I've dropped 3 dress sizes!

This studio was my first formal Pilates instruction and now I get it.  The gym classes I took previously are laughable in comparison.  I'm now a Pilates devotee - taking 4 classes a week between studio close to my home, and this one which is close to my work.  When I travel, I try other studios ... so I've sampled dozens of Pilates studios in San Francisco and beyond.  This is by far, the BEST I've tried!

Clean atmosphere.  Zen -like surroundings.  Molly at the front desk and reception is super helpful and welcoming.  Hell, everyone is.

I LOVE Dharmaspace - if you really want to get in shape, strengthen your core and address back or whatever issues.  This is the place.  If you just want some breathing and stretching - NOT for you.

Another nice thing in their welcoming and encouraging atmosphere - all body types are welcome.  This studio isn't just for size 2 dancers.

This is an amazingly well run small Pilates studio.

I am a beginner and have taken only the mat classes.

First, the Pilates very quickly (maybe 1 or 2 sessions?) got rid of some chronic back pain I'd been suffering from. I just needed to learn to properly stretch my spine. Wish I'd tried PIlates before spending all that money on chiropractor visits. Pilates anywhere would probably have taught me these stretches.

But it's the instruction here that is really exceptional. The instructors know their stuff, really pay attention, and are great about suggesting modifications if you have injuries or (like me) are just a wimp. Both Peter and Keegan were great and it was educational taking classes with each of them to get a slightly different perspective.

Peter in particular impresses me and all my work colleagues by how much he remembers about students from one session to another, even if you haven't been going for long. He is great about watching the students' form to provide feedback--this is important since it prevents taking strain in the wrong place. When he has spoken with students, the depth of his knowledge about various types injuries and their rehabilitation also impressed me.

Keegan is also very good. I love that she suggests the modifications to make exercises easier for us wimps and also harder for the more capable students.

I only took one class with Honorine. I found her use of compass directions unnecessarily complicated things, but that is very minor.

Peter is as attentive to things related to the running of the business. He and the people who have worked at the desk have always exhibited great competence and warmth.

I bet this it the best Pilates studio in the city.

I found pilates 4 years ago when I was suffering from a chronic illness.  I had been a full time athlete before but because of illness had to stop most physical activity, and I was devastated. Pilates brought me a healing space (with attention to breath, alignment, and a grounding environment) as well as a focused place to strengthen (at my own pace) so I could fight my disease.  I have been fully recovered for some time now, and have continued to become stronger through pilates- trying a number of studios on the East and West Coast, and in Europe.

Dharmaspace pilates in San Francisco is hands-down the best studio I've ever been to. From day one I have been impressed by Peter and his staff, who take a mastery approach that is rigorous (read: results!), joyful, safe, and accessible to anyone- whether you're rehabbing from injury, looking for a more exciting option than the gym, or training for the ballet.  When I walk out of pilates class at Dharmaspace, I feel long, lean, stong, and centered every time.  I feel pushed yet taken care of. Peter, Keegan, Chaele and the rest of the staff have taken such good care of me- and especially now when I'm 4 months pregnant!  Pilates has been incredible for my pregnancy, keeping me feeling strong as well as releasing tension and aches as my body grows week to week.

I could not recommend Peter and the Dharmaspace crew more.  Whether you're a total beginner or an advanced student- Dharmaspace is the place to go to become the strong, healthy person you know you can be.

Five stars for amazing service!  After I posted my earlier review (and, to be clear, it's my crazy life and lack of time management mojo that's the real problem here!) I received a very kind and helpful message from the owner, Peter.  He went above and beyond.

First, he apologized for the challenge I've had in getting in to classes (again, not really his fault), offered to help me personally get into classes to the extent possible, and even recommend other studios where I could get in on short notice.  That's some Miracle on 34th Street attitude and magic right there.  :)

I don't know what else any person could do, as a business owner, to try to make this better.

I hate exercise and I hate bubbly, overly enthusiastic fit people bouncing up and down. Over the years I've tried to put aside these things and get in shape. I've tried gyms, exercise classes, boot camps, none of which ever stuck. That is until I came to Dharmaspace. I even convinced my husband to go with me. It's been a year now, 3 times a week, for both of us - and WE LOVE IT!

Peter brings an incredible energy and enthusiasm to his classes that is motivating. He obviously loves what he does and it radiates through. Carolina brings a no nonsense intensity to her sessions that is not overwhelming or intimidating but keeps you demanding the best from yourself.

Unlike other classes I've tried where the instructors rattle off instructions and you're never sure if you're doing it right, Here they talk you through the movements with cues and descriptions so you can really visualize the goal. This also works to keep you mentally focused on what you're doing so you're not just flopping around going through the motions.

The studio itself is clean, organized and very pleasant. The other students are very nice and friendly. Thankfully no annoying perkiness or spandex or gossip filled locker rooms or other workout related creepiness.

No matter how I feel going into class, I always leave refreshed, energized and feeling better.

I've never been crazy about the gym, much less any kind of fitness studio. Maybe it's because I work with the French, but a leisurely stroll in high heels, combined with maintaining good posture while sipping on a glass of red wine, has always been my preferred fitness routine.

Enter a 9 to 5 "real world" job, where leisurely walks and glasses of wine exit the equation, and are replaced by long hours in front of a computer screen. One can only sit in a chair for so many hours before developing terrible posture, feeling exhausted, and just generally going crazy.

Enter ... Dharmaspace (conveniently located right downtown, for those of you staring at a computer screen in the Financial District). Just setting foot in this studio will make you feel better. The bamboo floors, the light, the upbeat energy from all the instructors. The positive encouragement, the welcoming atmosphere that puts even the most complete beginner at ease.

I would echo 100% everything that Yelpers have written below. Peter is a man who has clearly found his calling, and really does make a personal connection with each of his students. Carolina's workouts will truly get you to sweat and sculpt. Keegan is some kind of leg circle fairy, and Honorine's welcoming smile and great sense of humor put me completely at ease when I took my first private lessons. In sum, each has their own individual approach, but provides unparalleled personal attention.

As far as results? I certainly feel better. I used to tense up constantly in my neck from a stressful workday, and haven't done so in weeks.

I am slightly poorer (this addiction hasn't been great for my credit card).

But I am so, so much happier.

And so is my French boyfriend, by the way. During his visit this summer, our 4-year romance found a new spark.  He'd hardly let me sleep. I insisted it was because he had more energy since he quit smoking (and eating stinky cheese). He maintained it was because my abs looked so much better from pilates at Dharmaspace.

I eventually let him win. A true compliment from a Frenchman? That's when you know you're doing something right.

As for my love affair with Dharmaspace, I'm literally panicked at the idea of moving away in the coming months and trying to find a studio that's half as good.

All I can say is... pourvu que ça dure :)

absolutely love this place... it's the yin-yang of pilates studios...super serious yet incredibly relaxing. A BFF of mine in law school suggested i go here and i haven't turned back since, esp since they take appts up to 730p.

all the instructors are extremely professional and leave you feeling like a string bean and ready to hit the sack. Instructors Keegan, Alicia, Carolina, and Honorine are all so in tune with formerly trained dancers it really feels like they have this science figured out.

i highly recommend. if you do not believe the pilates craze, you def will after a few sessions with the leg springs :)

Dharmaspace is fantastic. Classic pilates, which I haven't been impressed by in the past in terms of getting me to sweat and sculpt, but this place hits the spot. More specifically, Peter is absolutely amazing. You don't know what ya got, till it's gone, but I've been living in Philadelphia for the past year and haven't found anything close to good pilates. I used to live near Mercury Fitness on Union St. and Lara was my first love, and will always have a place in my heart, but working downtown now, Peter and Dharmaspace and I are going steady. After several weeks of going as much as I can (which ends up being 2-3x per week), I'm ready to use the "L" word.

I love pilates at Dharmaspace. It's not just a work out - it's body enlightenment and building awareness, which then pays dividends for your future workouts. The instructors are really in tune to individuals and corrections, even in the later classes that get larger. The 6:30p classes are more full, but the 5:30pm classes are awesome if you can make it, because sometimes they turn in to tower classes if not enough people show up. Tower for the price of mat...for those complaining about price, this is a deal.

Since a few reviews flag price as an issue, their intro offer of 3 classes for $30 bux offers a great way to try them out. Definitely make one of those classes Peter's. I thought other instructors were also very good. The variation between mat class prices ranges between $14-16, so I don't purchase in bulk (usually 6 pack instead of 12...or single classes) because savings aren't substantial IMHO.

Peter Lakis...a man...a myth...an 'engager of cores'.  This guy is amazing; I started taking this class with the intention of checking out this whole 'Pilate' thing.  Is it for real?  A fad?  A cult?  Well, all of my answers flowed to me as seamlessly as the brief one-hour instructor led session.

Although I am familiar with the physiology of fitness and have considered myself to be well-versed in the realm of sports, this is an entirely different kind of philosophy.  Instead of 'pushing through' movements or 'breaking personal bests', the philosophies of Satori yoga embrace 'the flow of movements'.  The exercises are well-thought out and engrained in 'submitting to the spirit of the movement'.  Type A's and dinosaur faces are discouraged!  This is new ground for me.  I'm used to attempting to 'muscle' through movements and this has forced me to reevaluate the way I exercise.

The entire session revolves around movements raising awareness of one's 'core' or deep traverse muscles within the abdomen.  At first, I fumbled and stumbled and even grumbled, however, as my sessions evolve, I have had several 'breakthroughs'.  I'm now on week 8 and I am very conscious of my positioning and 'core'.  I leave feeling tighter in the waste line (and not because the pants are tight) I owe this all to Peter Lakis.

Now opening his own 'Dharmaspace', he was previously with Satori since inception (almost 2 years) and could not be a better instructor for those new and feeling awkward.  He gets excited about corrections and nails his stance down while belting out 'Nice Adjustment!'  I mean, I sense his sincerity!  He gets excited about this stuff...he has passion.  Also, he conveys the theory and spirit of the movement with useful imagery.  Example, stretch your head from your shoulders as if you're Katherine Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's'.  I've never seen the movie, but rather, I know Katherine and boy, she could turtle that neck waaayyy out!

Also, the staff is all great.  They remember your name and make you feel 'a part of'.  The environment is very calm and organic.  After the session, warm towels are provided and healthy meals (usually sushi w/ brown rice & Miso soup) are available for $10.00.  Also, Changing rooms and bathrooms are clean and orderly.  The prices vary and can range from 30 - $$$ dollars.  To me, it's well worth it...

Dharmaspace is a lovely pilates studio.  Peter is a superb teacher!  His verbal cues are so accurate and he can help you make even the most minute adjustments that cue you to find just the right alignment within the moves. There is a wide range of classes and lessons - ranging from mat class to mat/apparatus class, to reformer class, duets and private lessons.  The classes are offered at various times throughout the day - including early-bird, evening and lunch time classes.  It's right downtown, which can make that lunchtime class a great mid-day activitiy to break up the workday.

I started attending a beginning mat class about a year ago during my lunch breaks when Peter was teaching at Satori.  I ended up dropping about 20 lbs and 2 pants sizes within about 4 or 5 months (coupled with other exercise & a healthy diet, of course).  I attribute my pilates practice to the radical change in my physique.  I felt stronger, leaner and more flexible and my posture improved as well.  Never in my adult life have I had a "flat" stomach, complete with a little bit of a six - pack abs - as I did after making pilates a regular part of my life!  woo hoo!  To top it off, I found that the whole way that I moved in the world became different.  I am an avid snowboarder - and I found that last season was my best snowboarding season ever!  Being able to move with a stronger core really changes everything.

Peter's studio is a great place to start or continue a pilates practice!  Check it out!

So far i have nothing bad to say.  Getting fit.  Went to Dharmaspace during my lunch break yesterday to do beginning pilates with Erica.  She knew her stuff and i felt great afterward.  The space is beautiful, and conveniently located.  I work across the street, so i was able to make it over there, change, work out, and change back all in an hour.  Super friendly staff and a great starter package of 3 for $30.  I'm excited to try it again.
I just wish there were beginner classes on Monday and Friday.

I LOVE this studio. I used to consider myself a devout Pilates student (dvds and gym classes), but Dharmaspace has changed my perspective on everything. I feel like I FINALLY get it. I have a re-occurring neck/shoulder issue and Pilates has helped me so much.

This studio is amazing, the instructors are amazing, the space is amazing. I checked out other studios prior to coming here and none of them impressed me the way Dharmaspace did/does. Just go : )

Bonus: They have great package plans with reasonable rates.

I just finished my beginner intro pack. Yes, it was pricey but when you look at the rates of other places around the city Dharmaspace is one of the more affordable. I didn't feel like commuting to far away neighbourhoods as I know my lazy ass would talk myself out of it. The more convenient, the more likely it is that I'll make it there.

Back to the review: my pack consisted of 2 mat classes and 3 privates. I have taken group mat classes at ClubOne and thoroughly enjoyed it. Peter was my first instructor for mat and he's such a nice guy. You can't help but smile and feel calm when you're around him even though your "core" (or what I call my "love tire") feels like it's burning at a million degrees. I didn't even realize how lazy my body is without trying to be lazy. I have awful posture, I use my back for almost everything and people, if you take pilates, get used to being nagged about your shoulders. Peter remembered my name after 1 class. Shucks, wouldn't that make ANYONE feel special?

Ok, on to the privates, no... not my privates, pervert - ha! I hope there's not a review about privates, unless Laura B. authors it - that chick cracks me up. Again, I digress...

My first two sessions were with Keegan and the last one was with Erika. Honestly, I can't stress enough how nice everyone is here. I work with some of the most cynical and energy-sucking people out there and this is such a great way to end my day. Whenever I walk out of Dharmaspace I feel rejuvenated and refreshed even though I got my ass kicked. Dharmaspace ooozes positive energy and calmness. So, I've purchased another pack and if you're considering trying out pilates, give Dharmaspace a ring. I'll update you once the I start seeing/feeling results. I. Love. This. Place.

So, before I started going here, the concept of any type of exercise was alien to me. I'd never set foot in a gym. Total couch potato, completely ignorant about how my body works and how to stay in shape. I went here not because I was interested in physical fitness, but because friends told me that exercise was good for curing the blues. And OMG - coming here was one of the best things I've ever done.

I started doing private sessions with Kamryn, because I was too shy to join a class because I felt like I wouldn't know what I was doing. And she's been so great to work with. Completely patient, really kind, amazing at explaining things, and very motivational. She has a very inventive and visual way of describing the exercises. She's such a sweetheart - one time she even gave me a package of cookies she baked to take home with me! When she was gone around the holidays, I got to work with Keegan and Honorine. They were both fun to work with, too. Every instructor here has a great sense of humor, which really helped me feel comfortable.

The space itself is gorgeous. Beautiful lighting, clean air. Every time I arrive, I'm usually stressed/angry/exhausted from work. And whenever I leave, I'm just confident and focused, and the rest of my day goes much smoother. It's made a huge difference. All my muscles feel stronger and leaner, and for the first time in my adult life, I have good posture. I'll catch myself in the mirror and realize I'm standing up straight without even trying. That's a big deal for me, because I spend most of my day hunched over a laptop.

ANYWAY, this place is great. Everyone that goes here looks healthy and radiant. I look forward to every visit. I went from being a total fitness n00b to taking classes 3 times a week, and I want to do even more. The instructors are the best thing about this place, even though the equipment and decor is top-notch as well. I finally worked up the courage to join a mat class, but I'm going to continue the private sessions as well.

    Love it!

The absolutely best thing I can say about Peter Lakis (and consequently dharmaspace) is how much I missed it whilst he was on construction-pre-opening-hiatus.  You see, Peter used to be at the lovely Satori Yoga studio just down the street until he decided it was time to spread his wings and fly solo.  An awesome decision, but for us fledglings there was a 3 week stint where we had to do without.  Needless to say, my spine and core are SO happy that he's back, in a beautiful space, with lots of little amenities (free towels!), and a great staff.

It is indeed his instruction that keeps bringing people in, as a more engaging, empowering, enthusiastic instructor I have yet to meet.  Peter is exactly what you need if you're a beginner, intermediate or expert, as he will point out small and large adjustments each and every class to make your practice an ever-growing experience.

Do come, give it a try, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.  Especially its prime downtown location for all of us working stiffs.  Though hopefully not stiff for long....

PS: Another reviewer's mention about the "magical appearance of abs" is spot on.  Somehow, over the course of a few months, they just happened to sprout up, lateral lines and all.  So if you're looking for a little self-sculpting, come on down...

I've really been enjoying my lunchtime workouts at dharmaspace. The first class I wasn't sure I was getting it-but after a few classes where the instructors really come around and give you personal attention-I can really feel the toning. Not to mention that the classes are carefully planned to have you in and out in an hour.
Great/serene atmosphere - just relaxing enough to keep you focused.

Peter is not only a capable Pilates instructor who takes the time to understand the individual needs of your body, but a caring individual with a sense of humor that makes you want to push yourself as much as possible (but never to the point of pain).

The new location he has built at Dharmaspace is a fitness haven for those in the Financial District and SOMA.  All of the equipment is state-of-the-art and the entire staff is friendly so there's no reason to be hesitant to try something out for the first time.

The private Pilates lessons are competitive in pricing and the group mat classes are designed to be accessible to all.

I cannot believe how fantastic this location is for working stiffs, and how perfectly scheduled their classes are!  55 minutes at lunch...5:15 after work.  PERFECT times!

I am brand spankin' new to Pilates.  My abs can tell the better story.  Anyway, I love yoga but I'm an atheist, so sometimes yoga can feel a bit too heavy handed in the spiritual sense. Pilates seems to really be about the focus on breathing, stretching and muscle movement.    Again, PERFECT!

So....the space?  PERFECT.  The first time I walked in and got a tour I panicked because there was no shower.  Um, this is a lunchtime class and I work in a cube...people will notice if I haven't showered!  Then I took my 1st class and realized that you don't sweat, it's just not that kind of a workout.  In other words, this is not the only workout you're going to need- you'll need some cardio from something else.

The teachers?  Can anyone be as enthusiastic and informative as Peter?  I don't think so!  Really, this guy is so awesome.

The only downside, which didn't detract from my star rating above because they are competitive with other studios, is the PRICETAG.  Pilates is the kind of thing I could easily do 5 times a week.  Well my friends, that's going to cost you, I mean, cost you a lot.  Like $35 per class a lot.  I thought I had a decent salary until I discovered pilates.  I really can't figure out how so many people are able to afford $35 per class?  Are they going once a week?  The place is packed!  Clearly, I need to ask for a raise.  For a girl used to free workouts outside, this is the one part of pilates I really can't understand.  Although I wish I could afford to figure it out!

I have been doing Pilates for a decade at some of the best studios in NYC, LA and SF and have had some amazing teachers. Yet I consider Peter Lakis the most remarkable Pilates teacher I have ever had. Why? Because he thinks about and explains Pilates from the inside, not from the outside, not just explaining what to do but why you should do it, using great imagery. His being funny and charming doesn't hurt  - and now that I'm working with Peter, neither do my shoulders or my quads! The studio is beautiful and well-equipped, the other staff are also great anf firendly - and if you've never taken classical Pilates, this is the place to do it. Your body will thank you.

I can come here and get a yoga class, a pilates mat class or an equipment based pilates class.  The pilates is geared towards wellness and appears to be very well thought out and meticulously crafted.  It is very obvious that Peter and Erika know Pilates inside and out by the way that they teach and work with their students as well as how they organize their classes and equipment.

The instructors are all very friendly and not pretentious prima donnas, which helps keep me relaxed before, during and after class.  The support staff always makes me feel welcome, like I was there on personal invitation -- I never feel like I have to earn my presence there like at some places in the city.  And there is now a rowing machine on-site so I can work up a sweat before or after a class if I am looking for a little bit extra too.  Absolutely fantastic place to escape from the daily grind.  I wish I could live there!

Wow, by far the best pilates class I have ever been to in my whole life.  I came in tonight for the first time and got the 3 for $30 mat class intro deal.  I took Peter's intermediate class and he is an amazing teacher.  The class was challenging, he called everyone by their name (including me) and assisted throughout the class to make sure everyone was improving their practice.  The class has few enough people that we all got personal attention, and the studio is cute, modern and charming.  He even helped me modify because I have a giant cast on my leg.

I also went to Greta's class, which I didn't like nearly as much as Peter's, but it was still good.  I recommend Peter though.

I've come here three times for private sessions with Peter, the owner and head instructor. My back is prone to flareups from time to time and have come to sessions during a couple of mild-moderate flareups. From this experience, I have to say that the work that Peter did with my far surpassed any physical therapy experience that I've had. By the time I had left, my back felt not only better, but rather good. I don't know nearly enough about Pilates to make a thorough judgment here, but on the strength of what it did to help my back and Peter's outstanding teaching style, Dharmaspace gets top marks from me

If you are looking for a Pilates studio downtown, then stop this instant because Dharmaspace is IT! The space is beautiful, tranquil, open, and very well-equipped. All of the instructors and employees that I've worked with or met are super nice, knowledgeable and extremely thoughtful toward one's individual needs.

The location is fabulous and convenient to Fidi, BART, Muni, my apt, etc. I think the prices are fine, they are running a business here, what do you expect people? Just buy in bulk! I would come everyday if it was feasible. They have classes at all times, though I prefer off times because I have a flexible schedule and would rather avoid the lunch/after work crowd and let someone have the spot who needs it. They have a convenient online booking and purchasing system too, many classes fill up fast though. Private appointments are available at varied times. My only gripe is that I would like them to bring back the 11am class that they had before the holidays. Once that returns I will be truly happy!

Many thanks to Peter, Diane and everyone else for your dedication! You are definitely changing lives through your practice!

I have tried it all...gyms, yoga studios, trainers, running etc and I have abandoned them all- NO MORE! I have found my workout haven and it is in this quaint studio down the street from my work.

I cannot say enough good things about Dharmaspace. Ease of scheduling classes, nice desk staff, amazing teachers I could go on and on. The other plus - I actually look more toned, feel stronger and my aches and pains are subsiding.

I am one of those people plagued with body aches and problems - you name it I have probably had it. The teachers here will happily show you exercises that can help improve specific areas of your body that you can do in the studio or at home. Now that is what I call going above and beyond!

I loved Dharmaspace right away.  I know another Pilates studio where they tell you to "negotiate the space with your neighbor" when making arm circles (as if!  - we just whack hands).  So I was impressed the first time Peter set up for arm circles by calling out alternate students by name and telling us to move to the back of our mats so we could all move freely.  I swear it was my first class and he already knew my name, nice!

I feel so safe when the instructors ask about injuries before each class so they can take extra care where it's needed.  I have rehabilitated my back and shoulder from repetitive strain injury with rigorous Pilates, so I'm a true believer, and very conservative.  I prefer the beginner mat classes, though I often try the harder modifications.  I find the more clearly I share what's going on with my injury, the better Peter and Carolina (my personal favorite instructors) are able to correct me when those parts are being worked.  And the better those parts work when we're through.

Lots of food options nearby make for a well-rounded lunch break.  Super-close to BART and Muni.

This studio sold me on Pilates.

I've been practicing Mysore-style (self-practice) Ashtanga yoga for 6 years now, so I've had plenty of time to think about how to improve the way I move.

From all those years of yoga, and thanks to the steep hill-walking we all have to do in SF, I had regular pain in my lower back.

Within weeks of taking classes at Dharmaspace, I had learned dozens of new things about my body and how to strengthen it and not just rely on flexibility.

I had been going to the chiropractor to address my back pain, but after a month or so at Dharmaspace, I had strengthened my back and butt enough to resolve my chronic sore back and haven't been back to the chiro since.

It's beautiful, Peter is an incredibly smart and experienced movement expert (and GREAT at teaching it...), it's sparkling clean, and it's conveniently located near my office and the Montgomery BART / Muni station.

It also blows all other SF Pilates studios I've been to out of the water.

    WOW!

Not only can I fit into "non-curvy" jeans from the Gap, but this past weekend I introduced my husband & father to my latest obsession..........DHARMA.

I've been taking a few mat classes per week and a few private lessons since this past February. Seeing as my dad was in-town helping me move...and he has always been into some form of exercise, I set up a trio with him, myself, and my husband to have a private trio lesson with Honorine on Saturday (took a nice break from moving boxes:) SHE ROCKED. THE CLASS ROCKED. MY ABS ROCKED.

Nuff said..I'll continue this obsession. A healthy one, indeed! :)

It not only allows you to fit differently into your clothes ~ whatever goal you may have ~ it gives a beautiful peace of mind..especially the lunch hour classes smack dab in the financial district!

I didnt know Dharmaspace had a Yelp- otherwise i would have reviewed sooner. I took classes with Peter a long time ago. I was training for a half marathon and injured my leg and needed some sort of physical activity. He was a great instructor and I only wish i was still in SF so i can take classes.

Oh and i havent been since they first opened Dharmaspace, but i do remember it being beautiful and Peter spending a lot of time and love in making it a comfy space.

This is my first pilates studio in the city. I am grateful to it, If not for Dharmaspace, I wouldn't  be as hooked on pilates as I am now. I am not a current dharmaspacer, but I was for almost a year.  If my teacher didn't transfer, I would have stayed. Although it was timely, because dharmaspace was increasing their rates. I wish that they had given people who were there when they started  some discounts or some initiative.  It's pricey, but the place looks awesome and they have fabulous teachers.

The staff is very very friendly. Peter knows everybody, and greets you by name. He is an awesome pilates teacher. Majida is also very friendly and helpful. I love her calming voice :)

Lofty brick walled space that feels spacious in downtown SF. I liked their dressing room area and cubby holes.  I came here with my friend last night to try pilates mat for the first time.  The machines look sort of scary to the non-trained eye. We participated in a class of 12 and there apparently was also a waiting list. I booked 3 classes for $30 and can't wait to go back to try pilates again.  Having taken yoga, there are some similar elements, but the focus is definitely on the core.  I was in positions that I never thought my body could go in.  Anyway, the experience was well worth it and can't wait to go back and use up my 2 remaining classes.

I'm always at my very best after I walk out of a session at Dharmaspace.

Its been over 6 months and I've never regretted one dollar that I've spent here.  I've done pilates on and off for years, but no where have I found such attentive (they see everything, so don't even try to half-ass it), caring and knowledgeable instructors.  This space just FEELS good.  It's full of love and passion and completing non-threatening.  You'll like everyone there...from Jill at the front desk, to Peter who is the most involved owner I've ever met and seems to know every single person by name and body injury.

However, I have found a true partner in Kamryn.  She is dedicated to making sure I'm getting the most out of every session.  With her confident, soothing guidance and positive encouragement, she keeps me wanting to push myself until it all clicks and my body finally gets it!

Start with a few privates...then take a group class with Peter.  You will sing the praises of Dharmaspace!

Dharmaspace is one of those hidden gems that makes working near the financial district a real joy. Literally a hop and a step away from BART, this clean, quiet studio is equipped with nice equipment, clean mats, and private changing areas. The staff is amazing - professional, enthusiastic, and extremely personable. I have taken private instruction and mat classes so far, and both have been great. The instructors have all been patient and professional, and my private instructor has been incredible at working with my strengths and limitations so that I actually feel like I am developing and learning something, rather than simply being put through the paces. If you've been thinking about Pilates, this is definitely a great place to start.

Peter ...how do I love thee, let me count the ways. Met Peter back when he started at Satori, a lovely studio smack dab in the FD years ago.  Also met the divine yogi Kerri Kelly there.  They rocked my world and my fat ass.  Then, one by one, they moved on to greener pastures.  Peter opened Dharmapace, a luscious space and his unbridled enthusiasm and infectious desire to teach took firm hold.  I love this place and was a devotee.  then work got in the way of class, I got sick and I lost pre paid classes to expiration dates.  Oh, I was graciously given extensions, but then something else would come up....oh misery. I can't stand losing hard won $$$$.  If your schedule is under control and you don't have little people going down like the twin towers on you, this place is THE best to be had.  Love and miss dearly.

Pilates is kind of inaccessible to newbies: the exercises seem really simple, but doing them RIGHT is crazily hard.  But also the right movements can be really counterintuitive, thus the newbie confusion.
So basically you need a really good teacher, and Peter at Dharmaspace is the best.
I've taken mat classes from Keegan and Honorine as well as Peter, and they are all really good at finding funny and creative ways to describe what you're supposed to do.  (The term "J-Lo booty" was in high rotation for a while, but also "pretend you're pulling on a pair of really tight jeans", "picture the toe of an elf shoe", and "avoid the porcupine on your lap" are other memorable and helpful descriptors.)  Plus, all the staff are good at giving personalized feedback both to help when you're doing something wrong and to praise when you're doing something well.  I like Peter's classes the best because he talks the most and so all of his description and praise really sink in.
The studio is really pretty, steps away from the Montgomery BART, and really welcoming.  I always leave class in a better mood and walking taller than when I came in!

I have just finished my first week of pilates at Dharmaspace and I'm hooked. My instructor is Nicole and she's awesome at explaining what you need to do, she's so knowledgeable and friendly. Everyone at Dharmaspace are really nice. I've been to three classes and I already notice a difference, I've played many sports but my abs have never been that strong, pilates is definitely changing that! The space is pretty the people are nice and the location is great. The only down side is that the classes are pretty pricey but its not keeping me from going back.

This place, and the people there, are all so great, I kind of don't want to tell the whole world.  I want to hog them all to myself.  But I do love it so, that I feel compelled to write a review.

I have worked with Peter, Greta, and Kamryn.  All of them are outstanding instructors.  I was an athelete and dancer for years.  No coach or instructor I had worked with in the past displayed the knowledge and attention to detail that these three possess.   And they are the poised, sensitive, inspiring and funny all at the same time.

I signed up for the beginner introduction package and highly recommend it to anyone new to Pilates.  After just two months I noticed a huge difference in the way I felt like I was moving outside class.  I felt fantastic.

The BEST pilates studio and teachers in San Francisco, perhaps the US.  Peter and Erica are very well trained and know how to teach students at all levels.  I highly recommend this studio and they have evening classes which I could not find in the city for a long time.
