Honestly, I thought Dewey's was OK. I know I need to try it again b/c everyone I know from Cincy loves it. I don't know if I was spoiled by Chicago or what?! I got 1/2 Margarita 1/2 Southwest BBQ but maybe I should've tried a different kind or a salad. I'll try again and hopefully edit.
I amend my previous Dewey's review. I had a delicious pizza last night with great veggies on it and the white sauce. It was a mix of Green Lantern and Socrates' Revenge. I still like the white sauce better than red but I guess that's what makes is original. I also had a great Greek salad, better than you'd expect from most pizza restaurants. Try it out! :)
wow, I can't believe all the positive press on Yelp for Dewey's, this CAN'T be the best pizza in Cincinnati.
We went last night and tried (hot & fresh, so not delivered or picked up) the Dewey's classic with Italian Sausage & the BBQ Chicken pizzas.
Start with the Dewey's original first:
First off, Italian Sausage is to be plucked by the pizza maker from bulk sausage, not the crappy little circles of what appeared (& tasted) like pre-cooked weak italian sausage.
The dough, there was NO caramelization or blistering char that is present on good pizzas prepared in very hot ovens.
The cheese, mediocre gooey bulk type
The sauce - ok probably the best thing about the pizza.
The BBQ Chicken was ok but certainly nothing to rave over as almost anything with BBQ sauce on it is good :-)
Two stars is the most I can give, not worth going out of the way for.

Growing up in Jersey City, we did not have a Dewey's. I grew up on New York style pizza, which is good in its own right. It wasn't until last year that I first tasted Dewey's, and I have been in Ohio for 8 years. I will tell you this is one of my favorite pizza places in Ohio. It is actually tied for the top spot. The pizza is excellent! My favorite is the BBQ chicken pizza. They have a salad that I really love, and that is the Candied Walnut and Grape salad.
If you're ever in an area where there is a Dewey's, you must go.
Ah, Dewey's. The green lantern is their best, in my opinion, but I also adore the BBQ chicken, meatball and bronx bomber. The house salad is pretty amazing too.
i love their salads and their pizza and their calzones. i love that you can get sauce other than red sauce and do the half pizza one kind and the other half another kind. i have always had the best service there. if there is anything wrong they are so quick to offer you a discount before you can even tell them something was wrong (i.e. pizza comes out with the salads instead of the salads first, a hole in your pizza, or something wrong with your bill). great cinci establishment.
I want my ashes scattered here when I die.
Great pizza, salads, and people! The Oakley location is the original location, and we've been going more-or-less since it opened.
The location is nice. It's clean with a window into the kitchen. Great for kids who like to watch the pizza made--the bakers often throw flower at the window (much to my daughter's amusement.
They have a bar with a few choices of wine and beer (some local microbrews). There is also a great selection of salads. All have gormet ingredients on them.
The pizza, however, is the start of the show. The crust is light and warm. Not quite pastry-style, it really is good bread. Sauce choices are red sauce, or garlic and olive oil. Dewey's is the only place I know of that lets you ask for the sauces half-and-half. The toppings are both diverse and high in quality. You can easily do pizza classics (pepperoni, Italian, etc.), or make your own (with artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, and other great choices).
I find the prices to be reasonable relative to other pizza places. They have several Cincinnati-are locations, as well as locations in St. Louis.
There aren't many truthful slogans. But Dewey's really does deliver on its promise to take pizza to the next level (even if they don't actually deliver the pizza). From uniquely named specialty pies (The Edgar Allen Poe, the Bronx Bomber) to excellent ingredients (pesto, kalamata olives, goat cheese), Dewey's is to pizza what microbreweries are to beer: several steps above the big names. Speaking of which, they have good beers on tap (Bells, Ommegang, Southern Tier).
Admittedly, if you just want crust, sauce, and cheese, this is not your best option. Dewey's would be tossed out of Italy before they could toss the dough; it just isn't classic pizza (try Via Vite if you want that). This is highly Americanized and gourmet-ized, as evidenced by options like pine nuts, artichokes, black bean salsa, and pineapple and their rather good salads (the house salad is a staple with our orders).
I love almost every single Dewey's pizza (although I'm not a huge fan of the whole cloves of garlic on some varieties). I love it for dinner, I love it reheated for lunch, and I love it cold for breakfast. A pizza for all seasons.
Dewey's pizza is orgasmic, simply put. I have to get my "fix" at least twice a month at one of Dewey's several Cincinnati locations...but I most recently (yesterday, actually) visited the Oakley location.
Everything at Dewey's is great, I've tried a number of their pizzas and salads, but my all-time favorite Dewey's meal is as follows: A glass of Pinot Noir (the name escapes me but the location only has one Pinot offering currently) ordered before a side Peppercorn Ranch salad-although Dewey's has many delicious home-made dressings, the Peppercorn Ranch is the absolute best. Follow the salad with a Green Lantern pizza. This pie from heaven is made of Dewey's Red Sauce (spicier than your average tomato), garlic, mushrooms, goat cheese, pesto, and artichokes...all topped with a generous helping of mozzarella cheese. Dewey's never skimps on toppings and will more than happily bring you extra sauce for dipping, should you require it. For dessert, try one of the local Bonbonerie's delicacies...they change almost daily but I've had some amazing raspberry cheesecake at Dewey's before. If you really want to have a personal indulgence at Dewey's, skip the pizza and order a calzone (a bargain at $6.95) instead. "Individual" calzones are ENOURMOUS...average is a foot in length and four inches in height and stuffed with ricotta, mozzarella, and toppings of your choice.
The best advice I have about this restaurant? Go to Dewey's HUNGRY. You can always take left-over pizza and calzones home, but Dewey's is really best eaten one time only. An additional word of advice about the Oakley location: the parking lot is too small for the restaurant, if you visit this place on a busy night (basically any night between 6-8pm) you may have to park across the street or on the street.
Other notes: Dewey's offers take-out but not delivery :( ...I keep hoping, though!
i was visiting this city a few summers ago on a cross country trip. they had a seasonal vegetable pizza there that was so great that i had to get one 'to go' on my way out of town to snack on for the trip. absolutely divine pizza! ive never had anything quite like it before. it is probably my best reason for returning to cincinnati again.
Great pizza, great location, great restaurant. I used to live next door to this place and would eat it probably every other week. I love that they can do half and half pizzas with two different pizza choices. My personal favs - Green Lantern, Bronx Bomber, and Socrate's Revenge. The salads are also great especially the house salad. The beer selection isn't too bad either.
The best pizza! Great salads too.
They have a window looking into the kitchen, so you can watch them make your pizza.
My favorite is the Edgar Allen Poe, but so far everything I've ever had at Dewey's was delicious.
Took friends from out-of-state - man - the window is awesome! It kept Tanner occupied the entire lunch!!!!! Love their pizza and salad - great as usual!
When it comes to pizza, it doesn't get much better than Dewey's. Our usual is the Dewey's Original with pepperoni or the Caprice, both pretty plain as far as pizza goes but both fantastic. My fiancee is pretty lame when it comes to trying out different pizza's, but I did talk her into a Bronx Bomber once and we both enjoyed it very much. Their peppercorn ranch salad is a great starter, we usually split a regular before our pizza comes. They have a great selection of beers on tap, as well.
I love the Green Lantern. It is my fave pizza to order when in town visiting. I love the pizza here and it is a great place to bring out of towners looking for a good slice of pie. Although the beer selection is not extensive, the choices available are always tasty.
