I love this place. It has everything I want in a bar/pub/restaurant. As MIcky M. says, if you're looking for a night club style atmosphere then Dewey's isn't for you, but on the other hand if you're looking for somewhere to have a relaxing drink with friends in a comfortable atmosphere then I know no better place.

The bar staff are probably the best thing about it, I have never met a nicer group of staff and I have been in many a bar in my time. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and unlike most of the bars in NY they know how to make you feel at home. They are kind and always welcoming and talkative.

I find it strange when people find nasty things to say about places like Dewey's. It's the perfect place to go and hang out with friends, watch literally ANY sport you want on countless televisions, and have the chance to meet a whole host of different people in one place. I love it here and I'm sure there are classier joints in Manhattan but I don't think any of them will have the charm or the staff of Dewey's.

I haven't written a review in quite sometime, but after seeing the owner, ED DOBRES, response to Mordicai C's fair review, it spurred me. First off, the owner who clearly has some self-confidence issues he needs to work on, would recognize that not everyone is going to enjoy your establishment. It's an Irish pub, not exactly the most original concept as there are many in the city. In fact dare I say to Ed Dobres, there are MANY BETTER Irish pubs in NYC. I know that may shock you. Your Happy Hour is indeed a joke. Your food is atrocious and overpriced, and yes, believe it or not, your restaurant could possibly use a "Restaurant: Impossible" makeover. Also considering Dewey's has an average of 3 stars after 57 reviews, clearly not everyone loves your food and atmosphere. The food can be made better, but clearly with an owner like Ed Dobres, the atmosphere will always be bad.

And Mordicai C is the one that needs to get a life? How about the crazy, self-obsessed owner who scours Yelp looking to degrade people who dare give his restaurant less than stellar reviews. Awful place. Awful owner.

If you're 23 and looking to go clubbing, you would hate this place.

If you are around the age of 30, looking for a place to listen to solid music and have a few pints with friends after work? This is probably the place for you. It's huge. There's a lot of seating on the first and second floor, and there's a bar on both floors.

I wish I had discovered this place before.  There are flat screen TVs all over the place, so watching the game isn't a problem either.  When I was here last, a few TVs had ESPN on, and a few others had "The Scariest Movies Of The Last 10 Years" on Spike. I'm not sure if I agree with Spike's choice of 'The Ring' as the scariest movie of the last decade, but it created a discussion at the bar about the merits of various horror movies.

A solid mid-town option, that I will definitely return to.

A place with ambiance so bad that it almost makes you start believing in feng shui.  I mean, so bad my friends & I literally had to leave after one drink.  Happy Hour?  Only applies to Budweiser, & any other beer?  $7.50.  The pour?  Bad.  The taps?  Dirty.  The whole place smells like soggy fried food & other than its proximity to various businesses, I can't understand why anyone would go here.

Just grabbed a few beers with a friend on a Tues eve.  Dewey's made perfect sense since she lives in West Union Square and I live in Gramercy.  It wasn't too crowded so we grabbed some seats at the bar.  I learned there was a "Ladies Night Special" ($5 domestic + well) weeknights 7PM till close and was impressed.  But soon enough I learned exactly why.

There was a group of extremely drunk men (it was around 7:30 at this point) who were so loud I could barely hear my friend talk at certain points.  Eventually they started the horseplay - one guy doing cartwheels and two others wrestling.  When they left around 9pm I was so relieved.

Besides that, it seemed like a good spot to grab some drinks, watch some games and relax after work.

Ehhh...boyfriend had a work holiday party here, and while inconvenient to get to, we thought we'd stop by (he only works there part time, so thought it would be good to get some involvement, especially around the holidays).

I pictured this to be a dive-y type bar, and i was right.  Upon entry you are immediately carded (hilarious re Jane's review of a grandma with a walker getting carded - undoubtedly true), and their event was upstairs.  They gave us drink tickets, but unfortunately, they wouldn't give me a dirty martini, even for all our drink tickets.  That would be ok, but when we paid for the dirty martini instead, it cost as much as one at the Bergdorf Goodman restaurant, from which we had just came.  Um, a dive bar has the same pricing as BG??  The rum they put in my boyfriends rum and coke was apparently undrinkable (he wouldn't drink it and complained incessantly), and he was also complaining about how the bartender was unbelievably rude, nasty, and awkward - even though he was paying a ridiculous amount for my martini at an event full of drink ticket holders.

I guess if you like sports (I hate them), there are TVs all over the place....but I can't think of any other reason to come here.

My new favorite spot 9-11 PM on Saturdays. Why? Ladies night = $5 cover and free drinks (well drinks, bud, bud light, and house wine). It seemed too good to be true, but as soon as we stepped in, the bouncer told us about it.

Aside from that special, the food is decent. They were out of portobella mushrooms so I ordered the zesty chicken sandwich instead (grilled chicken with mozzarella on ciabatta & side of sweet potato fries) - it was pretty good. The appetizer sampler had a good decent amount of food - although it looked like it was all thrown onto the plate.

The server was good and all the bartenders made the drinks pretty decent (the female bartender had a heavier hand than the male), especially considering it was free. There are also several flat TVs around the bar/restaurant so it would be an okay place to watch games (although there are better sports bars in the city).

So this bar isn't anything that knocks your socks off, but I like it there.  i like that its not too crowded, I like that there is a lot of wood, and I like that they have cold beer on tap.  I've been here twice, so far, once during a redonkulous rain storm, and once before I had dinner plans.  I like their beer selection, the food smelt good, and if i didn't already have plans, I'd house one of their burgers - the guy next to me was eating one and it took all my self control not to steal his fries.  They had a full bar, a friend of mine always seems to have trouble finding makers mark - they had it, so that was nice.

the location is nice, I like the flat iron district, and there weren't too many meat heads - which is key for me to enjoy a bar.  nice bar, nice atmosphere, nice beer.  Its like 72 degrees...pleasant.

The only reason this place is getting a 2 star rating here vs a 1 is for the space upstairs (couches/tv's) and the great waitress we had last night.  The prices are ridiculous for draft beer in a sports bar, the happy hour specials stink, and I sat at the bar for over 2 hours, tipped in excess of $30 to the bartender and got not one buy-back...Not even a bud.  That blows my mind.  It also blows my mind that the pile of cash on the bar sat there until we went upstairs as to almost rub in my face that I was overly generous tipping $3+ per drink and wasn't comp'ed at all in return.  Do I expect free stuff?  Heck no.  But on principle, if a customer is being super nice and super generous, toss them a bone...It's just good business.

Happy hour is already well-reviewed, but the secret is that Dewey's is actually a great place for a business lunch. Yes, it's pricey for bar food, but it's also tasty and substantial for bar food, and definitely not so pricey it'll raise any eyebrows in accounting.

Lunchtime is generally quiet, and service is prompt. Plus, it's an Irish pub. You have to order a beer, right? (This is one of my favorite tricks for getting a grumpy boss or dissatisfied client to relax a bit before they can get to the the "chewing you out" part of the agenda.)

You know that guy in your office who's kind of a creep? The guy who sits in the corner, has no friends, and is always trying to hang out? The guy who keeps the rest of you from talking about your plans to go out after work for fear that he'll catch wind of them, so you all secretly e-mail each other instead?

    Turns out I'm that guy.

I recently discovered that all my co-workers go out drinking together ALL THE TIME. They have been hiding at Dewey's because it's the closest bar to our office, and I'd never think to look there. Here I've been staking out all the bars near their apartments, and they've been right under my nose the whole time.

Anyway, I can see why they go to Dewey's: it's a solid bar. They have a decent happy hour with an out-sized happy hour crowd (lots of offices in the area), but there are plenty of booths, each with their own flatscreen. The drinks are strong enough, and the beer selection is decent as well. The menu seems like the standard fried bar food staples (mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers, etc.), and while I haven't yet had the pleasure, I bet they taste like the standard fried bar food staples.

An average after-work spot, perfect for downing a few drinks (hopefully on the expense account) and complaining about your company/boss/salary/life.

Whether you're drowning your sorrows after of a tough day at the office or out celebrating with those same coworkers, Dewey's Flatiron makes happy hour easy. Sure, it fits into the Irish Sports bar genre without much flavor or individuality but you won't find much better in the area surrounding Madison Square Park.

Things to expect before you go:
    1. You'll be carded at the door. I've seen them card a grandma with a walker here.
    2. Sports will be on TV. Not your team? Then just take a gander at one of the other 5 flat screens.
    3. The place is filled with yuppies, media types, bridge and tunnel, tourists and the occasional posse of frat boys doing jägerbombs. And then you, of course.
    4. The food will smell better than it tastes. It's not bad at all, it's just typical bar food: wings, waffle fries, pizza, nachos. These are also the perfect way to bring that intern who starts slurring her words back from a black out.

There's also an upstairs area available for private rental, just in case your group is too large to squeeze. Now get back to work, you still have a few hours till Happy Hour.

Dewey's is a pretty solid bar by my office and gym that's pretty good for a happy hour with coworkers or a quick drink with the boyfriend after a workout (I know, how counterproductive)

My only thing, and I am far from cheap, is that for a little Irish Pub, the food is waaaaaaaaaay overpriced. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty good food, just pricey. I think they have to make up for the fact that their Happy Hour is dirt cheap. They have well drinks, margaritas for 5 bucks pretty much every weekday and beer specials as well till 7 and for ladies those drinks specials continue all night after 7 (sorry guys!) I haven't been to their weekend "open bar" but $25 for 3 hours open bar sounds like a deal to me.

The drinks aren't watered down either which is nice but make sure you say "WELL" when ordering your happy hour beverage of choice, my boyfriend's brother got Jack & Coke all night and his part of the bar bill was double ours, HA!

You will watch sports while you are there, whether or not you want to. If it's not a game, it's an ESPN rundown show so get ready for some testosterone!

Have tried various things from their menu and even though it's pricey, its good - just make that your dinner. The grilled cheese with bacon was delicious but hey, it's grilled cheese with bacon, how can it not be?

I agree with other people, the servers seem to be kinda pissy but there are like 2 or 3 girls and the place gets packed after 5 so they probably get a little stressed - each visit to our table brings a different surprise - sometimes she's nice, sometimes she's moody!

Solid place for less expensive, casual happy hour, usually try to get there twice a month.

This place is great for Happy Hour and after work meet-ups! It surrounded by so many offices that you mostly get the after work crowd. You know the girls in office clothes but in flats and the guys with their ties loosened or stuffed into their pockets.

They have drink specials every night of the week and their happy hour drinks start at $5...can't beat that. Also, every night after 7pm is ladies night, which works for me since I am one.

The place is definitely a low-key, no frills kind of atmosphere. You don't have to get dressed up to go here ever and everyone is very friendly. You often see separate conversations at the bar mixing in with one another. It also a place where you could go by yourself, guy or girl, for a quick after work/before train drink and no one will look twice.

The bartenders are friendly and always eager to refill your drink. There are tables in the back and upstairs, but the place to be is at the bar downstairs.

They don't have coat check, but they do have a coat rack in the front where you can hang your jacket. Just make sure some drunk moron doesn't leave with yours on accident.

Overall a good place to end your work day or start your night. Not a place to stay all night long.

My girls and I have made this place our happy hour place of choice.

Kind of a dark, skeevy, uninspiring bar. I walk in, nothing special. I was actually here for a Halloween party a few years ago which was semi-decent. There were tons of people and the beers were flowing from top to bottom.

Just as a bar though, it leaves much to be desired. You can barely hail down the waitress and it's so dark and depressing, lit only by the flashing TV screens, that you don't feel like staying too long. Although there is no music it seems really loud and hard to hear each other. The long deep booths though are pretty cool and can fit like 8 skinny people, with a flat screen TV that's all yours. We ordered chicken tenders, wings and mozzarella sticks and they were all pretty good. The drinks were $5 well drinks and corona bottles, ladies night every night! $5 margaritas.

I just wish someone can update the decor and re-energize this place. It's really close to where I work so I would love to come back for more, if only it undergoes renovation and change ownership!

I just had my 30th birthday party at Dewey's. It was the perfect, perfect spot!

First off, the party was on January 8, 2011 - the day of the Jets/Colts playoffs.  HUGE game.  After learning about game and feeling anxious about bar I had previously reserved space, I started to call around, just in case things didn't work out.  The sports bar that I previously reserved space pretty much couldn't guarantee I wouldn't be affected by the Jets game. Ummm really? That doesn't fly with me.  I'm no diva, but who doesn't want to feel special and catered to on their birthday?!

Well we definitely were catered to at Dewey's! The bar was able to accommodate my large group (about 50-60 people) in a weeks notice  with an area in the mezzanine. There was a bar, private bar tender, server, and private rest rooms ( so key!), at least 6 TVs to watch game (no music during game, which I like. Although we couldn't have too many dance parties!) All of this was totally perfect for a party, especially on a packed game night!

Ed, the owner was available on phone and email during the party process and I could just tell that things were going to turn out perfect!

Food was good (had mini burgers, chicken tenders, and cheese/fruit platter) and the staff was accommodating with helping with cake and all extras I brought.  The bartender, Jason, was one of the happiest and spirited bartenders I've encountered in a looong time. My crew loved him!

Since it was a private party we didn't interact too much with other patrons. But they looked fun, happy and put together!  We even ran into other random friends (ooops I forgot to invite to the party) at the bar!

Great time! Book your next party here!

I'm not going to rip Dewey's a new one. It's not really that bad. But I don't think there was enough here besides one blonde's cleavage to warrant any more than two stars. The highlight of the night was this girl who was INSANELY drunk just slouching around on the bar as her friends watched in horror. And she STAYED. for another HOUR. and someone gave her a glass of WINE. and the bartender rightly TOOK IT AWAY. It was just dumb, because she was going up to dudes that she didn't even know and they were being really sleazy.

The bartenders were no-fuss kind of people, good bartenders who pour really stiff drinks, tall pint glass mixed drinks. Unfortunately, I think when I told one bartender I was closing my tab, I think she heard it as "one more round and then close the tab" because when I got my bill it was as if we were charged for 6 drinks and not four. Oh well. I got sufficiently hammered on two double jack and diet's and with all the beer before that at other bars.
Plenty of TVs, but the one high def one is by the front of the bar toward the entrance, if you're facing the bar it's the most right. The projection screen above the entrance is shitty, the quality is horrible. Simply laid out, with an upstairs to boot, it's spacious though, I wouldn't mind going back on a non-game night to see the vibe.

My experiences at Dewey's Flatiron could be summed in 3 words: Awesome Happy Hour.

The prices are most definitely affordable and the drinks are fantastic. Waitresses, while as busy as they are, have been quite good despite being understaffed.  I've found that while its can be dark and gloomy on the inside, it provides a particular ambiance that is both romantic and exciting at the same time (when its not as busy).  And yet, this is a great place to catch some of the latest games that are happening in the sports world.  Definitely recommended for Happy Hour, especially after work or for a beer alternative beyond Shake Shack at Madison Square Park.

Went here to watch the weekday March Madness college basketball games after having been here for the occasional beer.

The best thing the place had going for it was the food - had a jerked chicken sandwich that was really good.  Had a nice limy/avacado flavor to it.  Also found nachos, onion rings, and mozzarella sticks I sampled all to be above average.

The sight lines were okay for the TVs.  It's a better place to watch a single event than to try and watch a few games simultaneously.

I'd generously describe the service/waitresses as flighty.  (Can we have the nachos arrive before the sandwiches?  Ok.  Then the sandwiches arrive before the nachos...oh?  let me check on those...)

The other slightly annoying thing was that we put down about 5 beers each.  It's a friday afternoon - you can't buy back on the 5th?  And you're charge $6.50 each?

I'd give this place another try b/c the food was above average, the vibe was cool, and I hear good things about the upstairs lounge...but I'll probably reserve it for a happy hour when service is less important.

Dewey's is around the corner from my work and is typically my mid-week soccer spot. If you work in the area and follow Champions League or want to watch the rare mid-week league match or international friendly, this is the place.

The beer selection isn't overly extensive, but it has the basics as well as some of my favorite microbrews like Brooklyn Lager and Sierra Nevada.

The food menu is great too. I highly recommend the pizza and the Rigatoni Bolognese, which are my usual selections when I come in. They also have excellent chicken fingers if you're not in the mood for  full-length meal.

Finally, the service . . in a word, great. All the bartenders are extremely friendly and personable, and if you're a regular like me, the experience is that much better.

All in all, I love this place. I love the food. I love the beer. I love the fact that if you need something to be put on the tube, they do it without fail. Highly recommended.

Dewey's is a great place to sit back, watch the game and get tanked on cheap drink specials. Plenty of tables and tv screens are hidden in the back, while the more social scene is up in the front near the bar.  Cheapest decent place to grab a drink in that area... and one of the few options that isn't a club/lounge with a four mile line out the front door.

I'd really give this place 3 1/2 stars, especially given the absolute lack of enthusiasm from the bartender.  And yes, that is singular.  Which in New York City proper, in a well traversed area, is RIDICULOUS.  The poor girl was totally overwhelmed, I'm sure, but cleaning up cash wise nevertheless.  Smile, honey.

I've been to Dewey's a few different times to see my favorite team play on their flat screens. Like others have said, they have pretty much the least enthusiastic wait staff ever assembled. Add a weird atmosphere and expensive drinks, I don't know that there is anything about this place that is special. It's like your normal neighborhood sports bar put in the middle of Manhattan.

+1 that they show non NY-related games, I suppose.

Ah definitely a nice find for above average bar food in the neighborhood! Came in during happy hour time for some dinner and had to scurry past the pretty crowded bar area. There was a nice big booth open and plenty of flat screens everywhere to watch the game.

Onion ring appetizer: perfectly fried, crispy, and delicious. Not too greasy either.
Jerk Chicken Sandwich: this stuff is never as spicy as they say, but it definitely had a great kick to it..lots of fresh avocado on top as well. Potato salad that came on the side was OK, nothing special.

Also tried at my table was the angus steak burger (great) and the sausage and bacon pizza. The pizza was SO big, so if you get this definitely split with someone or get it to share as an appetizer! We all have big appetites and almost half of it was left to take home.

Would definitely come again for some drinks and grub!

I'm wondering about you.  Yeah.  You.  What does it say that you're looking at a review of Dewey's?

What does it say about me that I'm writing one?

It says that I used to work up the street.  It means that when I meet my friend/former co-worker for drinks and I know she doesn't wanna come downtown that I'm going to have to let out a defeated sigh and ask, "Dewey's?"

And so I'm mostly wondering why you're looking at a review because this is a generic bar.  Seriously.  There are hundreds of bars just like this in town.  Boring, average service, a little too spendy, a little too much sports and former frat boys in their business casual button downs.

It's not gross.  It's not terrible.  It's just not my idea of a good time.

And I raise an eyebrow to the review that called this place a dive bar.  Waaaay to yuppified for that.

Dewey's is a very ordinary local sports bar, but is VERY expensive.

$7.50 drafts of Sierra Nevada??  Really?  Stick to the happy hour specials of $4 Bud drafts.  Or better yet, go to Red Sky  up the street which is a better bar, also does HH and doesn't rape you on drafts of "good" beer.

Once you're done paying $14 for a drink at 230 fifth ave (well and enjoying the $million view) head over to Dewey's to get your drink on.

Good folks work the bar and the decor isn't too shabby.

I find the cheesy trivia that endlessly plays on the wide-screens to be simultaneously mesmerizing and also really bloody annoying because I stop listening to any of my friends talking.

I never went upstairs, but the downstairs area is pretty much like every other non-Irish-pub sports bar.  Nice big tvs throughout, a projection that worked sporadically and a good draft selection.

The service was super nice, but that might be because we were part of a grand total of 10 people in the whole place on a Saturday night.  I liked the pictures of historic New York that gave me something to stare at while my friends watched the Mets take the first round of play offs.  So, not bad, not exceptional...a nice sports bar with kinda clean bathrooms.  Moving on....

Work happy hour.  Happy hour drinks were fine, $4 beers on tap and $5 well drinks.  The overwhelming smell of fried food was amazing. I almost ordered french fries and continually heard references to the fried platter.  So tempting, but I resisted.

A few members of the Blue Shirt Brigade dropped by, but the scene was fine.

Wouldn't frequent here if it weren't for work/happy hour.

Great beer on tap - check
    Yummy bar food - check
    Big screen tvs - check
    Pool table - check

I'm a fan. Great for happy hour, or if you want a low-key place on weekends.

Okay... let's see where this place went wrong. My first time here was with my company for our holiday happy hour last December (read: Christmas party during a recession). We had two hours of free wine or beer, and a nice buffet of appetizers. I had no complaints, but it was probably because a) shiz was free, b) the president gave me a cheers and even though I know he doesn't know my name, it was awesome, and c) good beer selection and again, for free.

Dewey's Flatiron, take two. I went back this weekend with a friend and was pleased once again to see the fabulous beer selection. I wasn't pleased though to see that the happy hour had just ended at that minute. Furthermore, the happy hour was actually not that happy at $5 a draft. Wait, that was the happy hour? How much are beers here??

After a drink, the bartenders (all three of them), each asked us what we'd like to order from the menu. Well to be honest, we had looked at the menu and decided we didn't want to pay over $10 for any of the appetizers, and were slightly against the $15 burgers as well. So, goodbye menu... hello drinking on an empty stomach. We had one more drink each and then called it quits. Place is crazy expensive for what should be a fun sports bar. What sucks is that they have cool stuff around the bar, like the airing of a Superbowl from the 70s on one screen, and another screen with random funny facts. It's also in a pretty convenient spot, and the bar itself is a really good sized place.

But the prices alone makes me stay far away, not to mention their sad attempt at a happy hour, and the three stooges working behind the bar Saturday night.

    Where to begin?

If it wasn't for the FSU game, and my buddy being an alumnus of that hallowed institute, and that most (not all) female graduates of that school are hot pieces of ass, with their streaked Hannah Montana hair, this place would only get one star.

We got here before the game and the place was packed - it would get even more packed by half-time. Nowhere to sit, the hardcore Seminole Club had probably been camped out all day, we went upstairs, was told that the rear table was reserved - come to find out, for people who didn't even seem interested in the game (unless there was a touchdown), but we had been told that Dewey's doesn't accept reservations when we tried to make one, so WTF!  Plus the girls at that table weren't even hot, just very disinterested and overly bitchy looking.

That said, the waitress was harried and miserable, dealing with drunks, and drink and food orders, which clearly overwhelmed her.  We tipped her well, but she still sucked, making us wait forever for our rounds, even walking by us with our drinks on her tray, serving some group of losers that treated her like shit, and then gave us our beers after she had probably spit in it or let her hair hang in it for a spell.

There were a few girls that had obviously put on weight since graduating, say, in 06, that were still trying to cram themselves into their skinny halters with their baloney boobies hanging out and their hysterectomy pants showing off the front wedgie, trying to convince themselves, and their hotter friends, that they weren't a bit fat.  One girl looked like she had white toilet tissue hanging out the back of her pants, but we later realized it was a piece of her tee shirt that had come untucked.

The point in the evening that signalled our time to leave was when some mousy runt of a dick spilled his beer ALL OVER my buddy's back (Class of 98), soaking his FSU jersey down to his skin.  Now, this happens all the time, but at least apologize - especially when my buddy once cleaved an eyewitness news van in twain with his bare hands.  The dude was rude about it, so that meant it was time to go before the FSU game turned into a crime scene.

Decent basic place.  It is good for the neighborhood afterwork bar crowd, watch a game, eat a burger. Prices are not too bad, but slightly higher than your average eatery. Basically a fancy pub delux, with nyc restaurant prices.  World Cup games left them a bit overwhelmed it seemed when i was there, but I had a good time.
    Cute waitress too!

This dark lit bar with two floors is not a bad place to come to for happy hour if you work in the area.  The interesting thing about this place is that if you are going to use your credit card there is a $20 minimum, I thought that was really strange.

Holy expensive Batman. Came here after a short day of work for a beer, realized I was starving, and then looked at the menu and a Caesar salad was literally like 14 dollars. And nothing else looked remotely appealing. I was pretty sure this salad was going to be gross but I was so desperate. It actually ended up being amazing and I consider myself a total Caesar salad connoisseur. The croutons were super buttery and right out of the oven and they put a TON of delicious grilled chicken on top. It was probably 2 pounds of salad and I basically ate the whole thing. But hot DAMN I thought this was expensive!

My friends and I stopped in for a drink here after work.  The place was kind of dark and dingy.  The music was pretty depressing and mellow.  I wasn't a big fan.  The crowd was oddly older, like lots of 40-50 year old men.  Weird place.
