Dew Drop Inn is an institution and you haven't dined around Mobile untill you tried one of their hotdogs -- several Old Mobile families preached that to me as soon as I moved into this area. So I went to check them out, and then I went there again and again.

No matter what time of the day you go there - they are busy serving customers; and they are packed at lunch time, so either go early or go late, otherwise -- good luck with parking, I am not even talking about getting a table.

Going there Is an experience, however, the staff are not even attempting to turn your meal into a dining experience - they take your order, bring your food, bring you your check without having asked if you'd like a dessert / another beer and rush you out (especially during the rush hour- no pun intended).
You will see all kinds of ppl eating there - families, retired folks, policemen, professionals, a redneck or two --- everyone goes there at least once. And it's worth it --- the wonderful upside-down hotdog spiced up with lots of red dye. I try to eat healthy most of the time and I was terrified when I saw the hotdog but it tasted good to me and it was satisfying; it wasn't my most memorable hotdog in my life (nobody has been able to beat Nathan's on Connie Island / Brooklyn for me) but it's satisfying and good in a homely sort of way. The onion rings are decent too ( and I don't really like onions, not in their pure form at least).

By the way, there are other items on the menue besides the hotdogs but I can't remember what they are; I think it's country cooking but don't quote me on this. I guess no matter what they serve, hot dogs are their signature dish and one needs to stick with it.

This place. this place. What can I say? Round the corner from all that is good and pure - where I went to Montessori school, where my Yaya lives and my Father grew up, my Prep School, my Piano Teacher, my Church, my Peeps.

When I was a wee lass I ordered the grilled cheese, nothing to sneeze at. And as always, onion rings with mustard. Now that I can handle mega flavor and taste, it's the Dew Dog, upside down. Get all the tasty toppings on the bottom of the bun, topped with the dog. The only way to go.

Dad says the crappy-ass napkins haven't changed in 50 years...you still need 5 or 6 to mop your face. Love it!

Say what you will about hot dogs that turn the bun pink.....but the Dew Drop Dog is a classic.  Throw in some onion rings and you've got a meal fit for clogging arteries and infusing your body with all manner of stuff that is probably not good for you (say...........red dye) - but LORD HAVE MERCY - it will also make you want to jump up and "slap yo Mamma" as we like to say in the South.

By the way - they still serve Coke in the GLASS bottle.  No free refills obviously - but you just have to love the nostalgia of a place like the Dew Drop.

Their catfish on Fridays is also a favorite.  Go early or late - the wait is ridiculous at the height of lunch - and there's no guarantee you'll be seated "in order".  They don't have a list - you just grab a table or booth if it opens up.  Don't go with a crowd - some of you may finish before the others get seated.

Aka the Dew Plop.  No explanation needed.  Regardless, this is still a favorite spot for locals.  The menu has not changed in thirty years at least, and yes, you can still get pink hot dogs.
