3 reviews for Devil's Tower
"What is that thing on all the Wyoming license plates?" asks my friend.
"Devil's Tower" I say.
"How do you know things like that?"
Let's just say that I was the only nine-year old who carried around a 1993 Rand McNally United States atlas everywhere he went. I received a 1996 atlas for my birthday a year later: best birthday ever.
So I knew about Devil's Tower and knew that it probably would be a worthwhile diversion after spending all morning driving on interstate 90 through Montana and Wyoming. The actual geological structure seems so incredibly random among the hills of northeastern Wyoming. We were real excited to see the tower as we drove up route 24, but after viewing it from the road for a good twenty minutes, the awe was kinda lost. Not that the structure isn't impressive, it definitely is, we just became a bit jaded after viewing the same formation for about an hour from different angles.
There are two things that are pretty awesome outside of the actual tower: the Native American legend of how the tower formed and the prairie dog town off of the road coming back from the visitor center. There are paths through the prairie dog town as well as valuable information about such an odd creature. When startled, a prairie dog will do back flips to alert others of danger! And they bark at each other! Which I've heard about, but it's still amazing. So yes, it's a worthwhile trip if you're in the vicinity, but maybe not something you should go hundreds of miles out of your way for.
Devil's Tower is great! Definitely a geological fascination even if you are a geek in that field or not. I heard a part of it came off because of hikers chipping into it to climb to the top of it. Is that true? I heard that story a few years after I was there. Anyway from recent pics it still is worth going to.
Rising over 1200 feet above the surrounding area, Devil's Tower is a true presence. It dominates the surrounding area with it's magnetic attraction. Actually, I have no idea if it has magnetic properties, but it was compelling to the people in the area...
Several of the Plains Tribes consider the area sacred. My family visited and we all agreed that the area has a unique feel.
If you're one of those goal oriented people that has a checklist of places to see, Devil's Tower should be on that list.
I have finally stopped sculpting my mashed potato's.
