My trip to the Science Center was a long time coming and while it was at the end of April I think I can remember enough to review.
It's been more than 20 years since my last visit and the fact that I don't remember much aside from a few things from the outside facade isn't surprising.
However, the main reason for my visit was to take in the STAR TREK: THE EXHIBITION attraction.
Admission was $18.95 for that and did not include the $6 "2-person simulator ride" or the additional fee to have the audio headset (didn't ask for the price).
The Exhibition entrance was on the main floor and they head you towards the large elevator to take you up to the 4th floor. The simulator ride is located on the main floor and you can see it as you wait for the elevator.
The elevator is all decked out with black lights and some writing on the wall.
When you exit the elevator, you're on shown the way to the main exhibit of TV Show costumes for TOS, TNG, and Enterprise. DS9, Voyager and TNG costumes, props, replicas, etc. come later in the exhibit.
It's hard to remember all that was there since photography is not permitted and they have people standing everywhere.
They do have a teleporter pad for you to stand on and they "simulate" transportation to/from some place and you watch it on a monitor. You're able to buy a photo later from the woman who gives you a ticket just like they do at Cedar Point.
This also happens when you find the bridge for Kirk and is crew from TOS. You're able to sit in the chairs and touch the panels but nothings moves. Again you're offered to take a picture and given a ticket for later viewing of your photo.
The rest of the exhibit is walking along corridors you might have found on the Enterprise-D (TNG) and you're able to look in on certain rooms (i.e. Picard's quarters) or go in to see other displays of props/costumes/models/etc.
The final display is a large, somewhat dark, room that displays a timeline on one wall that includes all the movies and TV shows. At the time of my visit, the newest movie was still empty at the very end.
There were other displays along with one of my favorites: replicas of every ship (sea to space) to carry the name Enterprise. Mounted on a wall very much like those ships that were in Picard's Ready Room back on the Enterprise-D from TNG. Also in this room is the $1M model of the Enterprise-D and a huge Borg ship model.
In all . . . I would have to give the Star Trek: The Exhibition a C+. It takes you less than an hour to navigate (approx. 45 minutes if you really stretch it out) and it feels like there is a lot that could have been put on display in the same space.
As for the rest of the Science Center, I give it an A+. It's fascinating for adults and extremely entertaining for small children and slightly older children (teens may be bored).
The Pendulum, Electricity Show, Laser Harp and quite a few of the hands-on displays are very well done.
*** wow, you've come a long way, baby ... fun! ***

took the son here this morning for the IMAX feature,
"Deep Sea". it's an hour in length and beautifully done.
the rest of the center surprised me ... it has changed much.
all in a good way ... the anatomical model, pendulum displays,
electicity/electro-static illustrations, and space exploration area.

*** for only $24, we got all this? i've paid $24 just to park in LA! ***
A great place to bring kids. And the IMAX theater is a real IMAX, not the "fake" IMAX. Or whatever.
If you're looking for a fun and educational place to take the little kids(or even the big ones) the Detroit Science Center is the spot for you.
Located on Warren Avenue just blocks before Woodward, this exciting museum teaches kids about everything from sound to electricity with hands on exhibits and more.
In addition to the several floors of educational exhibits the Detroit Science Center also offers rad movies in their Imax theater, everything from sharks to pirates. Kids and adults alike with be an awe when they see a film on this giant and sublime theater.
the Detroit Science center also offers special exhibits such as the forthcoming DaVinci exhibit that will sure to be as fun as it is educational. the continuous rotating exhibits make this museum great time after time.
So, don't wait for your kids to make a trip to the Detroit Science Center with their school class, load the whole family up and make a visit to this fascinating Detroit gem.
The Detroit Science Center is amazing.
The reason why that statement is interesting is because I am now a grown woman and I said the same thing about this place when I was a little kid.
Where do I start? They have the freaking Tilt-O-Rama if you're ready for some barf-o fun walking around like an astronaut! Who wouldn't love that? The Sparks Theater is a gorgeous homage to the way light and heat affects us all -- and the best part is that it looks like you are going to be electro-shocked, but it is 100% safe.
For Halloween, they programmed their robot to carve a pumpkin! It took awhile, but hopefully the robot will crank them out faster this year. I can't wait to sese it.
The travelling exhibitions are always worth checking out, they really get the best of the best. I can't wait to watch my son play here. It will be an excuse for me to get brushed up on my physics and magnetics in a fun way -- he'll be asking and I'm going to quote this place!
Is there anyone who doesn't remember how awesome the DSC is?
Being a dad, I'm very much looking forward to taking my daughter to a place that I enjoyed so much as a kid. I'm very surprised that DSC alone didn't turn me into a science geek!
It's an awesome place for kids - probably the most awesome educational trip they'll ever take! I've been with kids at Greenfield Village... and though I really REALLY enjoy it, it's hit or miss with the young ones.
I think it's the hands-on nature of the science center. Sure, those hallways of boring animatronics won't do it, but the exploratorium is more than enough to get those kids running around like banshees!
Speaking of banshees; has anyone else noticed how loud it is in there? It sounds like a crowd at a rock concert... only younger.
They have an awesome exhibit going on right now about Pirates. I haven't been yet, but I'm really looking forward to going, considering how wonderful their human body exhibit was.
This hands-on museum caters to families with a variety of active exhibits. This is THE museum for kids in metro Detroit. The saving grace for adults is the museum's dome IMAX theater that takes a huge IMAX movie and wraps the image 180 degrees around you. If they ever show an underwater or space film, you have to check it out!
I love this place... it's educational and fun. I checked out the Human Body exhibit last year, and I was wowed by the entire show. I really want to check out the current Shipwreck! exhibit with pirates and sunken treasures, argh! No really, aside from the special traveling exhibits, the Detroit Science Center has plenty of fun activities to do and lessons to learn. Furthermore, it has an IMAX dome theatre, which is so much cooler than the IMAX regular movie theatres that aren't anything special at all. If you've never seen a movie in a dome theatre, then you MUST go (unless you are easily queasy or suffer from vertigo). All in all, this place is fun for kids, fun for teens, and fun for adults. It's really great to have such place in Detroit, and you should check it out. Not only will you learn something new, but you'll be supporting the culture of our city!
Went to a party there last night...great venue-- fun to hang around in...wish i could have seen the rest of the exhibits but it looked a little more kid orientated than i would have liked....but otherwise well done
Ultra cool place with tons of things to get the brain juices flowing. I could barely keep my son occupied with one thing before he was on to the next! I love the simulation of the tornado. Took me forever to get the pic but I got it! I also enjoyed the movie dome. Took me back to my days in elementary school. I also enjoyed the fact that I could pack a lunch for my son. We still end up stopping at the snack bar but all and all the prepared lunch cut down on what I spent at the snack bar. My only frustration was the parking. They are doing some renovation work which is understandable but it totally screws up the parking situation. The parking structure I used wasn't far but it only accepted singles. So here I am scrambling to find them and holding up traffic at the same time. All in all it was a great day and my son loved it!
Thinking of this takes me back to grade school when all was cool. We all load on the big yellow school bus and spend the day at the DIA Museum and the Science center where we'd go staight to the gift shop on the search for astronaut ice cream neopolitan. This was the fun museum as it's hands on. I recently went to the exploratorium and I must say it needs some work, but same great concept, and sure to give young kids great memories too.
