I have to say I was surprised by how fast the action is in the rink. These ladies are indeed hell on wheels. A lot of them must be in killer shape.
The giant bad beer flowed like sweet elixer and I pretty much spent the whole time on my feet as I did not want to miss any action. And it is held in one of the most beautiful buildings I've ever seen.
If I had a daughter, I would totally take her to see some matches.
The Detroit Derby Girls rule my world. I just went to my second ever bout yesterday, and had a BLAST. The women involved are completely bad-ass while having a sense of humor and how to have a good time (and get other people in on the good times, too). Costumes (even the refs have some fantastic getups!), foxy-strong women battling it out in the rink, and even some half-time hula-hooping are all a part of the experience.
I love the mix of folks in the crowd - friends and family of the Derby girls, rockers, little kids, and people who look like they could me my aunt or uncle - they're all there. It's obvious the crowd loves the Derby Girls, too, as tickets keep selling out super-fast -- this last time they were sold out a full couple of days before the bout. So, if you're considering going (and why wouldn't you?) -- a word to the wise -- get those tickets EARLY!
I love the Derby Girls! I totally wish I was one of them. Powerful, beautiful, ballsy, adrenalin junkies on skates!
I am with Matthew D on this one. I totally thought this was about skimpy outfits and beating the snot out of each other. But it is in one way, but it's also not. You'll just have to come and see what I mean! After one game, I have an "idea" as to what is going on. They hand out pamphlets when you go in explaining the rules and introducing the teams. But it all goes pretty fast it's hard to really catch on until the 2nd half.
They have beer there. 24 ounce cans of PBR to be exact. I'm not one of those raving PBR fans, and I normally hate watered down American lagers -- but there is a time and place for this kind of beer -- and the Derby was totally it. Drinking a massive brewski watching the girls kick ass was awesome.
Needs more fishnets and hockey style brawls. But the tiny skirts and clear camaraderie is good enough for me!
Also, the Masonic Temple -- is CRAZY beautiful. Like took my breath away. And I was astonished that there was a ROLLER DERBY GAME ON THE THIRD FLOOR! I mean, come on, you have to question the integrity of buildings after living in Detroit for awhile.
They sold out about a week in advanced this time. You can get tickets online or go to one of the Derby Girls sponsored places like Curl up & Dye.
I, like many other people that I've talked to about Detroit Roller Derby, had a completely wrong idea of what goes on at a Roller Derby game. I heard a couple of people saying things like "girls in skimpy outfits" and that is kind of ridiculous... in a world of the internet, one shouldn't be so thick.
But I did NOT realize the extent of the serious competition that went on at these games... and even more important... how much I would enjoy it!!!
We showed up around 6:40, but luckily for us, Mariah C had gotten there on time and grabbed 5 or 6 seats for her and her guest, my buddy and me, Jen H and her companion. Center court, last row (easy access to get beers or hit the bathroom).. nice work Mariah!
There are some rules that took awhile to get used to, but it's a relatively easy concept... one girl tries to pass the pack of the other team and scores a point when they do... add in a lot of other rules about penalties and a second jammer who's trying to beat the first and you've got a game that's complicated enough to really enjoy the subtleties, but easy enough for the casual viewer.
Get your tickets early! 4 or 5 games straight they've sold out!
Aimless and I went to one derby match last year on a whim and LOVED It. It is a great time and really fun for the whole family. These woman are incredible and make great role models vs. the crap kids see on TV. My only problem is I wish I could get up to the D to see it more often.
Check them out it is well worth it.
JUST came back from a DDG afterparty at Small's in Hamtramck. It was awesome. The match was great. The people are great. You are wasting your life away if you've never been to a roller derby and afterparty in detroit. Seriously. Tell me one thing you could possibly have been doing that was better. I dare you.
DERRRRRBY! I have been meaning to go forever, to see my old pal Iggy Slop (he's a street walkin' cheetah with a heart full of naplam) keep those derby girls in line. After hearing lots of his stories, and reading lots of stuff (all good) about the girls on the bathroom walls at the 8 ball, I finally got around to checking it out. Good times! The Yelp crew was awesome enough to save us seats, there are a few rows of folding chairs, otherwise you take your life in your hands by sitting right at the edge of the rink. I had no idea just how sporting of an event this would be, but there were actually live commentators and some super awesome people getting the crowd riled up by doing the wave. Sweet. Also, Pabst was available and some kind of rockabilly band played at intermission, it all seemed oddly appropriate. I finally caught on to the general idea of the game, but how they keep score and penalties will take awhile. I am looking forward to going back, I hear the refs have been known to wear some interesting theme costumes. The only way this would be more fun is if they somehow made it like horse racing, or at least had betting windows. I don't know what you would bet on, I'll have to think about that one. Check out the DDG webpage, the pictures of injuries are nuts!
