Stayed here for business for just over a week. The good thing about such a long stay is that you really get to know the quirks of the hotel. The bad thing is that you get to know the quirks of the hotel.
Good: Rooms are nice and well appointed. Bed was comfortable and there was a couch, desk and chair. There's also a dresser for clothing which also holds the small coffee maker and pullout tray with ice bucket and glasses. TV is large, flat screen. Toiletries provided are good, although I wasn't fond of the scent. Closet space is okay.
Bad: Even the 'bad' wasn't really bad. More like, mediocre. Room service food was just okay. Water pressure in the shower was also 'just okay', but not horrible. Chair at work desk had wheels on it, but was really hard to maneuver on carpeting. (I think the carpeting was too "loose".)
Excellent: Customer service. Everyone from the front desk to the Executive Lounge was great. In fact, the Executive Lounge was a highlight of the stay. Great place to work without being in my room, snacks provided, TVs to stay on top of the news, internet access and lots of windows so you didn't feel closed in. I did not partake of the morning breakfast items in the lounge, so I can't speak to that, but the evening nosh was great. Both ladies who attend to the Lounge were fantastic and friendly, and I'm sorry I've forgotten their names.
All things considered, if you need to be in Troy, Michigan, this is a very nice place to stay.

I had to stay here for business, otherwise, I would not choose a hotel in the middle of nowhere. Given that fact, you would think a hotel that probably serves mostly business travelers and is not really within walking distance of any stores or restaurants (there's a Champs across the street but that's it for miles) they would have better accomodations inside.
There's really only one dining establishment inside (Shula's Steakhouse) but they like to define as two, because the bar (Shula's Bar & Grill) is situated in the open by the lobby. However, they serve the same bar menu inside the Steakhouse anyways. So in my mind, it's the same place. It seems that if you want any non-steakhouse food you have to get room service which I took advantage of a lot. The crunchy french toasts were YUMMY as was everything else I ate but those stood out.
They have a very small snack & drinks store where you can get sodas (or pop as they call it), chips, small travel items, make copies or use the computer. And even though when I travel anywhere else in the world I don't really make use of the hotel gift shop, this hotel definitely could have used one. I can't stress enough that there's NOTHING around so a gift shop would at least help kill time if you've only got an hour to kill here and there.
Aside from that, staff was friendly and room accommodations were nice.
If you want to stay on track with your exercise routine while you're traveling for business or on vacation, the Marriott is a great choice. They have a nice pool as well as an exercise room. While the exercise room is not going to rival your local Bally's Fitness Center, it is pretty well equipped for a hotel. They have treadmills, stair-climbers, a variety of free weights and a few weight machines. There's a watercooler in there, and the staff stocks a basket with fruit each morning in the fitness center as well.
Of course, there are other nice things about this Marriott. For instance, the rooms are super swanky. When I arrived with my husband, they didn't have our reservation, but they found us a nice room right away, despite the fact that the hotel was being taken over by a convention that weekend. There was a small sitting area with a couch and a coffee table and then a big comfy bed with lots of puffy pillows and reading lights on each side.
The staff was extra nice here, as well. Every time I passed someone on staff, they smiled and often asked if there was anything they could do for me.
The Marriott is expensive, but you can get deals if you plan in advance and check the website. They also offer discounts when you stay here as part of a convention, and you can often get room rates around half of what they normally charge in that case.

I used to stay here fairly often for business...
I don't quite get this place. It's not any nicer than any Holiday Inn I've been to, yet the rates are regularly at $200+ (last time I was in town, Townsend was the same price as the Marriot). The Marriott is in the middle of nowhere. So unless you're staying here for business with no plans whatsoever to go out, I don't know what the point in staying here is. I'd much rather be in Birmingham.
If you get a concierge level room it's even more. Concierge level are the higher level floors.. you know, for that better view of the commercial complex next door. You get bigger pillows and access to the concierge lounge. The concierge lounge resembles every continental breakfast room in America except they have a bar where you can mix your own drinks. You're supposed to write down what you mixed and they bill it to your room. How many people really are honest about that I wonder? HMmm. And how exciting is the privilege to hang out and watch TV with strangers who are just as bored as you?
Shula's Steakhouse is good, but I've found better and more lively steakhouses in Birmingham and elsewhere.
I've always questioned how clean the rooms were... Once I got a dirty room.... and by dirty I mean there was lube all over the night stand and remote. I told the desk staff about it, they just kind of shrugged and said "OK" ... It was cleaned when I got back, but "OK" isn't much of a response to something so gross.
I've never stayed here since.
I don't compliment hotels on good service unless they go above and beyond what feel is expected. I travel 40 weeks a year and 99% of my stays are at Marriotts. No surprises this week. Thursday morning I dropped off my laundry expecting it be to be returned by 5 pm. 7 pm I called the front desk, was told laundry was currently being delivered. 8:30 called down again, was told the hotel was busy and it would be another 5 minutes. 10 pm, called again. My laundry came up in about 20 minutes. This may seem petty to some folks but if a hotel has an 8:30 am cut-off for accepting laundry they should honor their 5 pm laundry delivery. 10:30 pm is just not acceptable.
