I only have positive things to say about my many experiences with this salon and the people who work there. Brian is my hair stylist and he is amazing at what he does! My hair always looks fresh, sassy, and sexy when I leave his chair. I have had others attempt to replicate his cut and I am never happy. I don't know why I would ever stray from Brian he always gives me what I want and I enjoy his conversation too. Today I was particularly impressed. I was late, like really late (traffic), and Brian got the job done with a great success! Piper stepped up and showed me how to flat iron my hair to look like fantastic and I am excited to try it at home. She was so friendly and professional, thank you! From the moment you walk into the salon you just know that your going to walk away feeling like a rock star. Even as I was checking out Britt was great with her follow through on my experience and was genuinely friendly and professional. The drive is far for me but it is well worth it. Good work you guys!

I called today to make an appointment for a blowout and style for a Sunday wedding, because this was the only salon (that I trusted) that is open on Sundays. +1 star for being open on Sundays.

When the receptionist determined it was my first time at DeTour, she asked about my hair texture, length and whether it's colored. +1 star for knowing to ask.

The receptionist also asked if the style was for a special occasion (it is)
and asked if I have a particular kind of style in mind (I do). +1 more star.

She booked me for a specific stylist who she thinks is a good match for my hair and the style I want, rather than just throwing me to the next available stylist when I show up on Sunday. So far, so good. I'll update after the actual service.

This review is for the store, not the salon.

I love persuing this store! Excellent and ecclectic mix of books and gift items in busy downtown Encinitas. I really love the mix of unique costume jewelry too.

Sometimes super pricey, sometimes super inexpensive, guess it depends on the item!

This is a really nice salon.  Great location and customer service.

They also have a cool shop next door.

There is an agnelos across the street which makes it even better!

Have been coming to Detour for years. I have always had lots of luck finding a good stylist here.  Lots of super talented people here.

I must note that I despise salons who use the same stupid sales pitch" what product are you using"?    For the most part I never have found detour to be the place to aggressively pitch product on me.  They start but then then end  when I tell them I am not interested.   The only complaint I have is the last time I was at Detour I was hit with a $25 charge for something called a "shot".  I guess this is some deep conditioning stuff?   No way is a $25 extra conditioner shot going to provide any long term value.  If my ends are dry than cut them.  Really, the only "shot" I am paying $25 dollars for is one that makes you a bit tipsy after you drink the stuff. . Despite that horrid moment I have always had luck with Detour and would recommend the salon to others looking for a good hair professional.

I'm the first guy to review the place and for a second I got that creepy are-these-underpants-so-comfy-because-they're-made -for-ladies feeling. Then I remembered seeing other guys in there getting their hair cut, so I know I'm safe.

I went expecting to find something a little more punk that what greeted me - that is the fault of my own wrong preconceived notions. You know what they say about asses and you and me. Or something.

The haircut I received (from the ever-so-friendly and skilled Doug) is great. He took what I asked for and then made it fit my head, which is a good thing for a hair person to be able to do.

Minus one star for being kind of spendy (simple guy's hair should never bubble up over $40...) and for not being as punk as I wanted it to be. I guess Encinitas is a little short on the real grit that I'm after.

And yes, the underpants *were* made for women but they fit me and they're comfy and I don't care what the guys at the gym say.

I did get a few decent hair cuts here but a friend of my used to be one of the stylists and she had to take the owner to court to get paid. This left a very bad taste in my mouth and it's a shame but I'll never go there again as I choose only support businesses that take care of their staff in a healthy way.

    She won by the way.

This place is great, but as they say in Oregon "spendy".

I used to go there because I liked the drive up, and my hair was always great, I've stopped liking the price but always enjoy the drive into Encinitas.

The side store (away from hair stuff where everyone is dying their hair blonde mostly) always has some cool things you need, like watches or hair things or stuff for a wall. It's random but fun.

I am not one to pay a lot of money for a haircut, but since I was going from mid-back length hair to shoulder I wanted to make sure it was a decent cut.
I met with Kelly C. and she patiently sat and listened while I told her what I thought I might want and what I definitely  did not want in a haircut.  She had some great ideas for me and I ended up with the best haircut/style I've ever had. I felt so good my entire walk changed! Thanks a million!!

Like most people, I have had my hair cut many many many many times....from places ranging from $15 dollar Super Cuts to a 70$ Hair Boutique.

So why did the stylist treat me like a crazy person when I asked her why she had to straighten my hair to cut it first.
"But my hair is curly...so the cut you give me with straight hair wont look the same."
    "oh no its okay."
    "but..."

I should have known then, because what proceeded was some scary posh spice cut that lead me to go hat shopping.

Of course this could have been a one-time-stylist circumstance...so I would consider trying them again.

I know nothing about the salon, but the DeTour store is pretty awesome. They have cheap hair accessories--headbands, clips, barrettes--and hair product, but they also have women's clothing.

There are a lot of salons/clothing stores in Encinitas, which I think is genius. Not only are you maximizing space, you're pulling girls in right after they got their "hair did." That means they're feelin' like a hundred bucks and they're probably more likely to spend.

Anyway, the clothing at DeTour is rad, mostly because EVERYTHING is designed for long torso girls like me.

    Lindsay Herman cut my hair.

This was the first time I'd gone to a new stylist in the last 2 years. So my other stylist (and the only reason I didn't go to her this time is because gas prices are ridiculous and she's a bit of a drive away!) knew exactly what I wanted every time I walked in. That is very comforting...

So going to Lindsay was a little nerve-racking, but she put me at ease right away. I told her what I wanted (the same cut I've been getting for a while now...simple, long length, short layers, bangs) and she didn't try and make me do something crazy, didn't try and change my mind, just went with it. She also let me gab on and on (I'm a talker) and responded accordingly. Anyone who can do that gets a gold star in my book!

So if it was solely Lindsay I was reviewing and not the whole establishment, I'd have given 5 stars, but I'm docking one star because prices are high and some of the staff I dealt with that day weren't super friendly. (ahem...opener).

Oo, oo! I love love love the jewelry selection. Not too pricey, TONS of different styles to choose from. I actually picked something up for my Vegas trip I was leaving on in a few hours...score!

Until gas prices go down, Lindsay...be my stylist?!?

I've been a customer of Detour, and their other previous salon, 2nd Street for probably five years.

I actually started by going to Detour, and had a bad experience not terribly different from the horrific one below (horrible color/cut, had no money and it took a few times to get it fixed). Then I tried 2nd Street and found a stylist there that I liked, then followed her over (though hesitantly) back to Detour when the two salons combined.

It has definitely come a long way in the last 5 years. The quality of the stylists and service has risen. But, the customer service could still be much better.

After patronizing their business for five years and spending thousands of dollars with them, I was off-handedly informed 2 days before my last appointment that my stylist was no longer with the shop.  I would hope that someone with a history as long as mine would be given a little more care (and i KNOW they have my history in their system--every time i've been there, what treatments i've had, what products i've bought, etc).

When i told the girl that I wanted to be sure to have one of the best colorists for my reschedule (as that was what my stylist was excellent at), she just curtly replied "well they're all good." I'm sorry but that pissed me off--help me out here sweetheart!!! I'm being asked to trust some unknown with my hair!!

The girl I ended up with was fine, but I am seriously considering looking for another salon. I'm just lazy, so we'll see if i actually do it... ugh. Plus they have Bumble & Bumble which I was buying before they even had it in-store... now I'm all wound up. Blech.

I have only gone here once, but I got exactly what I wanted in both cut and color.  Jamie B did my hair, but I work with her husband and he just told me today she's on maternity leave so you're gonna have to wait if you go to her!  Anyways, I trusted her with cutting my hair the way she thought would  suit my face better, and she did a great job.

Yeah, this place is pricey, but I'm picky and I prefer salons that use Bumble products.  I think its worth it.

    But yeah, overall loved it.

I love Detour salon and have been getting my hair cut by Kelly C. for 5 years.  I first visited her to have my waist length hair cut super short and have alternated growing out and cutting my hair short again over time.  Not once have I ever been dissatisfied with my cut.  I have even received compliments on my haircut after it had been 4 months since my last trim.    I totally think the price is worth that.

I am going to be moving soon, and I know it is going to be hard to find another stylist who is as awesome as Kelly

I have been coming here since 2005.

I'm extremely picky about hair salons, so when I noticed this place in downtown Encinitas: I jumped onto their wagon.

Called them and explained that I have thick curly hair and am a hair dye addict -- they were nice enough to guide me to a couple stylists.   I ended up with Jamie B, and often request her availability and book her.   She dyed my hair red and black, and did wonderfully.

I've had some associates being trained work on my hair, and they all were good (for being under training).  Jessica cut my hair the last time (but no dye, as I'm currently "growing it all out")  Receptionists are "cool" and everyone definitely matches the decor/vibe.  Their reminder calls are helpful, but I personally prefer they not do that for me (I always request it, but even if they do, it's not a huge deal).

One lil bitsy bummer:  it is a bit costly, but I still come here as the service and the sexy-vibe is totally worth it.

Keep in mind, it's always a good idea to arrive with a ideas of what you want for your hair; pictures help.  I wouldn't suggest "Hey, do whatever you want!" -- I find that one usually end up walking out in tears.  Don't do that.   Stylists can not read your mind, dude.

Jessica DeHaven at Detour Hair Salon is AWESOME - her cut and color are always perfect.  She is the best stylist/colorist I have ever been to.  I'm constantly complimented on my hair - I'm now in the process of growing it out, and I'm confident Jessica will keep in looking great through the difficult process.

I love the Bumble and Bumble products they sell, as well.

The boutique attached to the salon is worth checking out - I always manage to find some cute accessory or clothing item to grab.

I've been searching for a hairstylist in the area and finally got lucky with Jamie Q. at Detour. I got a great cut, short kinda graduated a-line, exactly what I wanted and  my color always looks nice.

Consider yourself warned, it's definitely not cheap, but I've never gone cheap when it comes to my hair. It's the price you'd expect to pay for quality and consistency and a cool place in downtown Encinitas.

Josh at Detour Hair Salon is Amazing for Long Hair Cuts and Highlights!!!

I made  a hair apt on Mothers Day day as a gift and they got me in at 4:15pm! Well its been a little over a week and I have to say I love my hair even more now because of how well it was cut and natural the highlights were placed and how great it looks without too much work!

I was graced to have Josh as my stylist he was friendly, attentive and understanding about what i wanted my hair cut like. Down to cutting it so that it curls under at the ends! (I have straight long hair). He said he specialised in long hair and highlights which i love cause hardly anyone Ive ever went to knows what to do to make it look healthy and full! I felt like Josh engineered my hair the way it was meant to look its best! He took his time and even wove highlight into my hair that blended perfect with the old ones!  I asked him to make me beautiful again and he did! You can tell he cares about style and people. He's great at what he does!  I would recommend Josh to anyone who wants Victoria secret hair! I will definitely go back to him!

Thanks again Josh Your Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the most difficult haircut known to mankind (a graduated bob with some creative color thrown in), and Lyssa manages it perfectly. It's not cheap, but it's worth every penny.

The products are awesome -- my noggin shines like polished obsidian when I walk out of there. I've had strangers tell me my hair is a "work of art."

Lyssa also remembers little things that make conversation easy, which is handy because I'm not the most socially nimble. She's also comfortable just working without the chatter, which I find a great relief. My life just isn't interesting enough to sustain conversation with a near-stranger for more than an hour.

If I have one complaint, it's that the floor in the salon is dangerously slippery. Make sure you wear shoes with traction and leave the heels at home.

DO Not let BRIAN, who works at this salon, touch your hair.
He ruined my hair by putting highlights in it. Left the foils on to long and now I have broken off hair in the back of my head. Very difficult to hide.
My new hairdresser told me that he did not know what he was doing. He must of failed that part of his beauty school training. Told my friend who goes to him and she went to someone new after. They also said the same thing about her hair....it will break off, if he did, what he does one more time.  Thought for the day.....never let a bald man work on your hair!!!!!!

Once upon a time, I frequented Detour to have Shannon, and only Shannon work my mane.

    Then she left.

    So sad.

I went back, with a budget, and high hopes I'd get a great cut from someone new. Not true. Customer service is lacking and prices are overkill.

Sure the boutique is cute, but you won't find me sitting in a chair ever again!

PS} Yes, it's true. They straighten your hair to cut it. No, it doesn't make sense. You've been warned.

Plenty of pros and cons to Detour:

Cons: I found the customer service and lack of seating problematic when more then 3 people were waiting with me. I was not offered any type of drink or made any sort of accommodation. There are several entrances and exits, which made my first visit slight confusing.

Pros: I do not find the salon over priced at all! In fact I completed some sort of survey and received a $10 off certificate - and another for my birthday! I like the Bumble and Bumble products as well.

Overall my experience was kind of ehh...The woman that cut my hair was good enough, not great. I will go there again but probably see another stylist.

I was a client at Detour when they first opened.  I was given hands-down the worst haircut of my life.  On top of that, I have never been treated more rudely before.  It took forever to grow out, and overall the experience was very traumatic.  The decor is nice, and the boutique is cute, but none of that makes up for the snobby service and atrocious haircut I received.  I hope they have better stylists and a commitment to customer satisfaction now.

Jenna did a great job on my friend's hair. I was visiting the are to hang out with my friend and she told me she needed a haircut but was not sure where to go. I scoped out a few shops and thought this would be a good fit. My friend has long thick wavy hair and Jenna was able to look at it and give her an amazing cut for $56. She also was good at listening to what my friend wanted. My friend is super happy with her hair. They also are a Bumble and Bumble salon and they get training from them. I recommend Jenna to anyone looking for a great cut!

I have had one bad experience here (a couple years ago with someone who no longer works there) and several great experiences.  My "normal" stylist is Jaime B. (friendly, total genius), but she always seems to be on maternity leave (I never got my hair cut that often until I chopped it all off, so I guess I wasn't that frequent), so I have had two other stylists recently.  The first was Kyme, who gave me a great haircut and was really friendly/chatty.  The other was with Dana, who is new to the salon.  Amazing haircut, although she is not as outgoing.  But I really felt like Dana listened and knew how to work with short hair.  Instead of a bulbous bob, I now have an adorable, thinned-out flapper bob.  I should warn that when Dana was in the process of cutting my hair, I was a little nervous.  Is she going to leave that part down the middle?  Is it really going to look like old lady hair?  Shouldn't this girl with tattoos on her arms who went to school in New York know better?  Well, yes, she should.  And she does.  Clearly, I don't know how to cut hair.

Bottom line: friendly service, great haircuts, "younger" hipster atmosphere.  It's more upscale, including price, but there are plenty of places that are more expensive for the same quality.  I haven't really found a place I like as much as Detour and that is any cheaper.

I would have to be fair and say we had a good stylist who always did her best to please named Monica, but she's gone to New York now. Bummer. Asides from her, Detour was OK. It seems that they've always got new students/apprentices rolling in and yes, as others have described, the use of flat irons is OVERKILL.
The atmosphere feels like an uptight urban sorority house, so you're treated more like a fly on the wall rather than a client. It's strange, because Encinitas is supposed to be a laid back surf town.
I found a woman in North Park who cut my hair without a flat iron and in a fraction of the time and achieved better results for $15. That's a big difference from the $60 the fresh beauty school interns charge.

i've been going to detour for years and this place is fantastic!  i go to michelle - she is THE absolute best!  the place is big and there are a lot of stylists, so i'm sure there's a personality to fit anyone's needs (and i think the prices vary based on what level of stylist you see, but i'm not sure).  at first, you might be put off by the tattooed people and overall trendiness of the place, but don't let that keep you away.  the stylists really take advantage of and keep up with educational opportunities and, in my experience, it shows.  the salon as a whole really stays on top of the newest, latest styles and techniques in hair and fashion, but they won't laugh at you if you just want to stick with your same ol' hair thing.  another plus is that they have extended hours, so it's not difficult to get an appointment early/late/weekends/etc., although, some stylists (like mine) are harder to get into than others.  detour also has a store with lots of cute clothes, quirky items and gifts, and other things like nail polish, jewelry, and of course, hair products.  if you follow them on facebook, they publish lots of specials and deals there, so i'd definitely recommend it.

I didn't get my hair cut for about 6 months after we moved because I was looking for the "right" place to go.  I kept asking everyone where they went and I'd get these weird answers "my stylist is expensive" (did I ask?), "she works from home and she's full", etc, etc, until I felt like there was some kind of hair salon conspiracy!  Finally, a couple people told me they went to Detour, and one actually told me her stylist.
Now, I won't tell you who I see, because then I'd have to shoot you (and if she gets too busy, I won't get an appointment!), but I love this salon!  It makes a middle-aged mom feel vaguely hip and stylish.  My stylist didn't fire me for coloring my own hair.  I'll pay for the fabulous cut but, sorry, I don't take good enough care of it to justify the cost of them doing the color.
The people up front are nice and not snooty.  I wouldn't call them friendly only because they are from a different planet than me (one born 20 years later).  The assistant needs a double tip for the fabulous shampoo/massage (can I make an appointment just for that?).
My stylist is friendly, down-to-earth and makes suggestions that work for me.  I think it's $70 for a cut and it LASTS and is totally totally worth it.
I make my appointments 2-4 months out.  The first time I think I had to wait 3 weeks for anything with my special stylist.  I don't know how booked anyone else is.

Im giving this place 3 stars because according to the guide 3 stars = "A-OK" which I feel is a fair assessment of this place. I have had my hair cut at detour roughly 8-10 times with varied results and prices. Their men's cuts range anywhere from 26-50, so it's worth it to ask before you schedule with a specific stylist. Overall, Detour is "A-OK" but i would expect more for the price.

Friendly enough, but waaaay too expensive, too impersonal, and the job done on my hair was mediocre at best.
