Expensive much?  Not good enough for what it costs, and the joke of a boutique is not worth going into.

Excellent recommendation from a few friends who love the salon and have been going for years.  I am picky and loved that the stylist explained everything to me showed my how to style at home.  I had been doing it all wrong.

I give them high marks for professional customer service.  Saw a lot of guys in there too which was cool.

I  love my hair. It is such a cute cut.  Next time color and shine.  Also going to bring in my sister who has horrible hair. She also sucks at taking good care of her hair.

People at the desk had a nice cool but professional vibe.  Showed me some new arrivals and answered all my questions.  I also saw a friend in there so we caught up and I went to school with one of the assistants.

Detour is, in my books a fantastic fine.  All clients looked great when they walked out.

LOVE Detour Salon and it's right next door to E St. Cafe.

I'm nervous to write this glowing review, for fear I will have trouble getting future appointments!
I LOVE Shannon at Detour Salon.  I have been highlighting my hair for almost 20 years, and Shannon by far is my favorite stylist.  She always does my color perfectly, because she knows her stuff and really listens to what I want.  She is so laid back and cool - - Thank GOD she is back from her maternity leave!!

I would have to be fair and say we had a good stylist who always did her best to please named Monica, but she's gone to New York now. Bummer. Asides from her, Detour was OK. It seems that they've always got new students/apprentices rolling in and yes, as others have described, the use of flat irons is OVERKILL.
The atmosphere feels like an uptight urban sorority house, so you're treated more like a fly on the wall rather than a client. It's strange, because Encinitas is supposed to be a laid back surf town.
I found a woman in North Park who cut my hair without a flat iron and in a fraction of the time and achieved better results for $15. That's a big difference from the $60 the fresh beauty school interns charge.

Like most people, I have had my hair cut many many many many times....from places ranging from $15 dollar Super Cuts to a 70$ Hair Boutique.

So why did the stylist treat me like a crazy person when I asked her why she had to straighten my hair to cut it first.
"But my hair is curly...so the cut you give me with straight hair wont look the same."
"oh no its okay."
"but..."

I should have known then, because what proceeded was some scary posh spice cut that lead me to go hat shopping.

Of course this could have been a one-time-stylist circumstance...so I would consider trying them again.

I used to go into Detour every week, even if just for their jewelry which is always fun and trendy.  However, in teh last few months, the prices on clothing seem to have doubled and I just can't afford it much anymore.  Too bad - I almost always find something I like in there...

This place sucks!!!! I had just had my hair highlighted at my regular salon, Lucy did a beautiful job as always, but when the weekend came, I deceided I wanted my layers brought around the back to show about one inch of the dark color underneath the blond. My regular girl was not available, so I ran over to Detour as I heard it was good.  The girl destroyed my hair and in the back she cut ALL the new blond highlights OFF and left  4 inch layers across the top of my head! Now my hair is blond in the front and brown in the back! What a mess! And they say come back and we'll fix it!  Fix it, I'm not letting anyone in that salon TOUCH IT!!!!  I want my money back and my money from the highlights back also since I have to have it done all over again.  They are so rude and the manager says no refunds!  I'll see her in small claims!  DON'T EVER GO THERE!  WHAT A MISTAKE!!!!!!!!

Lindsay Herman cut my hair.

This was the first time I'd gone to a new stylist in the last 2 years. So my other stylist (and the only reason I didn't go to her this time is because gas prices are ridiculous and she's a bit of a drive away!) knew exactly what I wanted every time I walked in. That is very comforting...

So going to Lindsay was a little nerve-racking, but she put me at ease right away. I told her what I wanted (the same cut I've been getting for a while now...simple, long length, short layers, bangs) and she didn't try and make me do something crazy, didn't try and change my mind, just went with it. She also let me gab on and on (I'm a talker) and responded accordingly. Anyone who can do that gets a gold star in my book!

So if it was solely Lindsay I was reviewing and not the whole establishment, I'd have given 5 stars, but I'm docking one star because prices are high and some of the staff I dealt with that day weren't super friendly. (ahem...opener).

Oo, oo! I love love love the jewelry selection. Not too pricey, TONS of different styles to choose from. I actually picked something up for my Vegas trip I was leaving on in a few hours...score!

Until gas prices go down, Lindsay...be my stylist?!?

Doug Gordon is simply the best stylist around.  I have been seeing him for almost five years now and he has kept my long hair perfectly in shape and magnificently highlighted.  He is careful not to add too much light and uses natural tones to keep it looking natural.  He knows exactly what to do and is excellent at long hair "haircuts".  I wouldn't go elsewhere in town and if I was to move I would make the drive to come to see him from just about anywhere.  All stylists are most likely not created equal there, but Doug knows exactly what to do and when.

I have the most difficult haircut known to mankind (a graduated bob with some creative color thrown in), and Lyssa manages it perfectly. It's not cheap, but it's worth every penny.

The products are awesome -- my noggin shines like polished obsidian when I walk out of there. I've had strangers tell me my hair is a "work of art."

Lyssa also remembers little things that make conversation easy, which is handy because I'm not the most socially nimble. She's also comfortable just working without the chatter, which I find a great relief. My life just isn't interesting enough to sustain conversation with a near-stranger for more than an hour.

If I have one complaint, it's that the floor in the salon is dangerously slippery. Make sure you wear shoes with traction and leave the heels at home.

I didn't get my hair cut for about 6 months after we moved because I was looking for the "right" place to go.  I kept asking everyone where they went and I'd get these weird answers "my stylist is expensive" (did I ask?), "she works from home and she's full", etc, etc, until I felt like there was some kind of hair salon conspiracy!  Finally, a couple people told me they went to Detour, and one actually told me her stylist.
Now, I won't tell you who I see, because then I'd have to shoot you (and if she gets too busy, I won't get an appointment!), but I love this salon!  It makes a middle-aged mom feel vaguely hip and stylish.  My stylist didn't fire me for coloring my own hair.  I'll pay for the fabulous cut but, sorry, I don't take good enough care of it to justify the cost of them doing the color.
The people up front are nice and not snooty.  I wouldn't call them friendly only because they are from a different planet than me (one born 20 years later).  The assistant needs a double tip for the fabulous shampoo/massage (can I make an appointment just for that?).
My stylist is friendly, down-to-earth and makes suggestions that work for me.  I think it's $70 for a cut and it LASTS and is totally totally worth it.
I make my appointments 2-4 months out.  The first time I think I had to wait 3 weeks for anything with my special stylist.  I don't know how booked anyone else is.

I was a client at Detour when they first opened.  I was given hands-down the worst haircut of my life.  On top of that, I have never been treated more rudely before.  It took forever to grow out, and overall the experience was very traumatic.  The decor is nice, and the boutique is cute, but none of that makes up for the snobby service and atrocious haircut I received.  I hope they have better stylists and a commitment to customer satisfaction now.

My friend Blake likes one of the cute little blonde girls here.  He says she gives a great cut and great head um shampoos.  I hung out with her once and she drank even more than I!
Yo, I forgot your name but English Dave at the Saloon still talks about how hot you are!  I'd hit that if I were you.   I think I have his number somewhere....

Detour and all of it's staff has a fantastic vibe, offers a cool experience, and a perfect cut which was just what I asked for since  I'm vain.  It's a good place if you are a man or the type of guy who likes to feel comfortable in a salon.  Not  woo-woo and very comfortable.  It was busy and no one was sitting around.  I felt like I was in New York in the Village.  I loved it.

My stylist (Susana), was professional.  Best of all, she didn't dump her personal life all over me.  I like that because I was there to get a haircut and I hate hearing about ssome chick's drama.  She was all about making sure I was pleased and that was the case.  I give Susana a big AAAAAA++++++++AAAAAAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++++++ and Detour even a bigger AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++++AAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++.

This salon has it dialed in and I learned more about what I could do with the boring haircut I usually ask for., since I work part-time as a clerk in a law office.  I am also in the entertainment business and I have to look good for auditions in LA or where ever.  Susana showed me Bumble's Sumo Tech, which was a bit crazy looking at first, but for my type of hair, it was perfect.  I'm no model, but I'd like to think I can change my apperance in a heartbeat with a little instruction.  Thanks girl for taking the time to show me some options.  I will be back with a few friends and my girlfriend.  Price is less than I pay in LA.  Good job on the parking too.  I didn't have any problem.  I WILL BE BACK!

P.S.  I am going to buy my girlfriend a gift certificate at your store.  Seriously, I saw a really HOT DRESS that I want her to wear for her birthday.  'Am I the greatest boyfriend or what?

UPDATE:

Another amazing day a Detour Salon.  Had my hair cut and it looks perfect.  Thanks Susana.

I had my hair done today at Detour with a stylist who was really sweet (pregnant as well), and who didn't appear to be rushed or frustrated with all of my hair.  I read the reviews and I am super happy with my entire visit.  The stylist was on time, a big deal for me, and
Detour only carries Bumble and Bumble, so I was happy about that find.  I have long thick hair and the stylist matched my color perfectly. I had a formula from another salon, and it turns out, the colorist was familar with my original brand.  That was a relief and she suggested we change it to make the color a bit more sexy.  Also, much thanks to the scheduler for making sure I was directed toward someone who is good with long curly hair.  That was a nice touch.  I highly suggest you give them a try.

A few days later...........

My hair still looks incredible.  I had to wash it this morning and style it myself.  I LOVE THE BUMBLE TREATMENT LINE. It is the best, ever.  My hair has so much shine and it smells so good.  Thanks again.  I found a new style for next time.  I am hooked.

I am not one to pay a lot of money for a haircut, but since I was going from mid-back length hair to shoulder I wanted to make sure it was a decent cut.
I met with Kelly C. and she patiently sat and listened while I told her what I thought I might want and what I definitely  did not want in a haircut.  She had some great ideas for me and I ended up with the best haircut/style I've ever had. I felt so good my entire walk changed! Thanks a million!!

I have to say, I was pretty disappointed with my visit to Detour. I was expecting to get a haircut I really liked, seeing how its a fairly expensive higher end salon so I figured they would really listen to what I wanted. But the overall experience was not very pleasant. Some of the employees seemed great...but most of they seemed slightly snobby. I also felt like I was rushed in and out and that my haircut wasn't what I asked for. Lets just say...I will be wearing it in a ponytail for about a month until all the random, non flattering, layers can grow out. Does not compliment my face whatsoever. Next time I will save myself the 60$ for the basic haircut  that I got and just go to SuperCuts. I probably would have had a better experience there.

I'm sure it depends on what stylists you get but I was not impressed.  I was so fed up with my hair before and was so excited to finally get it cut...but now I wish I wouldn't have touched it. Oh well...I guess I will just know better next time. At least its long enough to put up in a pony tail.

I'm 20 so I figured since the staff was younger they would understand what I wanted. Anyways, I feel bad giving a bad review but I was just really not happy with how much I spent and the quality of service I received. SuperCuts here I come

This place is great, but as they say in Oregon "spendy".

I used to go there because I liked the drive up, and my hair was always great, I've stopped liking the price but always enjoy the drive into Encinitas.

The side store (away from hair stuff where everyone is dying their hair blonde mostly) always has some cool things you need, like watches or hair things or stuff for a wall. It's random but fun.

I'm the first guy to review the place and for a second I got that creepy are-these-underpants-so-comfy-because-they' re- made-for-ladies feeling. Then I remembered seeing other guys in there getting their hair cut, so I know I'm safe.

I went expecting to find something a little more punk that what greeted me - that is the fault of my own wrong preconceived notions. You know what they say about asses and you and me. Or something.

The haircut I received (from the ever-so-friendly and skilled Doug) is great. He took what I asked for and then made it fit my head, which is a good thing for a hair person to be able to do.

Minus one star for being kind of spendy (simple guy's hair should never bubble up over $40...) and for not being as punk as I wanted it to be. I guess Encinitas is a little short on the real grit that I'm after.

And yes, the underpants *were* made for women but they fit me and they're comfy and I don't care what the guys at the gym say.

I have been coming here since 2005.

I'm extremely picky about hair salons, so when I noticed this place in downtown Encinitas: I jumped onto their wagon.

Called them and explained that I have thick curly hair and am a hair dye addict -- they were nice enough to guide me to a couple stylists.   I ended up with Jamie B, and often request her availability and book her.   She dyed my hair red and black, and did wonderfully.

I've had some associates being trained work on my hair, and they all were good (for being under training).  Jessica cut my hair the last time (but no dye, as I'm currently "growing it all out")  Receptionists are "cool" and everyone definitely matches the decor/vibe.  Their reminder calls are helpful, but I personally prefer they not do that for me (I always request it, but even if they do, it's not a huge deal).

One lil bitsy bummer:  it is a bit costly, but I still come here as the service and the sexy-vibe is totally worth it.

Keep in mind, it's always a good idea to arrive with a ideas of what you want for your hair; pictures help.  I wouldn't suggest "Hey, do whatever you want!" -- I find that one usually end up walking out in tears.  Don't do that.   Stylists can not read your mind, dude.

I've been a customer of Detour, and their other previous salon, 2nd Street for probably five years.

I actually started by going to Detour, and had a bad experience not terribly different from the horrific one below (horrible color/cut, had no money and it took a few times to get it fixed). Then I tried 2nd Street and found a stylist there that I liked, then followed her over (though hesitantly) back to Detour when the two salons combined.

It has definitely come a long way in the last 5 years. The quality of the stylists and service has risen. But, the customer service could still be much better.

After patronizing their business for five years and spending thousands of dollars with them, I was off-handedly informed 2 days before my last appointment that my stylist was no longer with the shop.  I would hope that someone with a history as long as mine would be given a little more care (and i KNOW they have my history in their system--every time i've been there, what treatments i've had, what products i've bought, etc).

When i told the girl that I wanted to be sure to have one of the best colorists for my reschedule (as that was what my stylist was excellent at), she just curtly replied "well they're all good." I'm sorry but that pissed me off--help me out here sweetheart!!! I'm being asked to trust some unknown with my hair!!

The girl I ended up with was fine, but I am seriously considering looking for another salon. I'm just lazy, so we'll see if i actually do it... ugh. Plus they have Bumble & Bumble which I was buying before they even had it in-store... now I'm all wound up. Blech.

No thank you. This place sucks. I called for a full highlight, but when I got there, they only scheduled me for half. Also, i wanted low lights, but this girl made them way too dark, so the top half of my hair was darker than the bottom half. It looked weird.

I was logging on to post a very positive review of Detour Salon.  I read the review from 'Star' who se review could not have been further from the truth.  First of all, your so called bad hair hair cut happened years ago.  Who really cares what happened years ago to your hair. Styles were different then and your hair was also different.  You even said you had a different boyfrined.  Things change and even the guy you were so hot for, ended up being a dissappointment to you in the end?!Right?  Did you review him too?

I think it is so small minded an completely ridiculous that you would write a review of your one time experience at a business and attack the salon and the rest of it's emloyees in general.  How old are you?  You sound like somone who enjoys causing harm to businees who do not meet your expectations.  Maybe you should be a clue to this fact, everyone on earth has had a bad haircut.  So what!  You are attacking a business that I know for a fact is one of the most successful and solid business in all of San Diego County.

I am a hairdesigner and I live in Seattle.  I used to work at Gene Juarez salon as one of their most promising stylists. People who felt entitled and had strong expectations of a hairstylist to be able to wave some magic wand and make their hair and face and body suddenly turn into a 'Meg Ryan'.  NO so sweetheart,it just doesn't happen.  Haircutting is an art and each artist sees things differently.  Let me give you a simple example:  when there is a model in an drawing class where you have 10 artists drawing this model, NOT ONE OF THE FINISHED SKETCHES LOOKS THE SAME.  It was the same model on the same day and each artist make her look as they saw the model.  That is art and thank God we do not all cut hair the same.  I am sorry your hair didn't turn out the way you wanted it,but I can assure you, a professional salon like Detour would never make you feel badly.  Did you ever stop topto think that this was your day to that you happened to get the hairdresser who happened to see you differently than another.  Again, so what!  You admitted that you were a kid then, that you were in college and that Detour's prices used to be affordable.  So was gas once, but I am not holding the gas station respoisible for raising prices.  Get real, you just want to have a strong opinion and frankly, your outdated, immature opinion is just that, worthless.

Like I said, I am a hairdresser and I had my hair cut and colored at Detour last weekend. My stylist Kirk was incredible, as was Monica his assistant and all the rest of the staff. The place was humming with smiling men and women who all looked exceptionally pleased when they walked by.  I was down in San Diego visiting my family.  My hair was overdue for color and so I decided to get it done while in town.  Everyone I asked told me to go to Detour. They were amazing.  I loved their store, I purchased some jewelry and a book and everyone treated me with kindness and sellar professionalism.  I know how to cut hair sweetie and believe me, so do they.  Kirk told me about their remarkable education programs and business programs.  He also said the owner was just featured on the CBS Early Morning Show for her philanthropic work in New Orleans post Katrina. Many of the stylists have joined her to help volunteer.  Hardly the 'dragon lady' you thought you experienced.

Again, who cares that you had a bad haircut years ago.  I've had my shareand I'veno doubt given what some people considered a bad haircut.  You just can't please everyone in life and while you are on a crusade to hurt business' with your lame reviews, remember, compassion and understanding get you more out of life than you can ever imagine.  Cut the world some slack and quit being one of those spoiled 20 something year olds who feel entitled to a perfect ife.

Detour Rocks and you should get off you freaking high horse and get a life.

I've been seeing the same stylist, Christina, at Detour for nearly 3 years, and I'm a fan. The staff at the salon are very accommodating and communicative. I've never been pressure-sold on their products and the ladies at the front desk make booking appointments mindless. I also find their day before appointment reminder calls really helpful. The environment at the salon is both relaxed and hip-funky-artsy without the pretense. Detour recently expanded their salon, and nearly doubled it's size, offering lots of space and stylists to meet just about anyone's needs. The Detour store along side of the salon is filled with all kinds of neat products and accessories at great prices. Also, Detour uses and carries all Bumble & Bumble products, which are definitely pricey but, you get what you pay for, and boy, do they leave your hair looking fabulous.

ps. I wasn't paid to write this review. honest. i just really like detour.

Nice, funky, stylish and spacious salon.  I love the boutique part of the biz: nice shampoo lines, cheap and fun hair accessories, casual and cute tees.  This spot always feels like some beehive, a nice one, based on the number of customers that I see inside each time I come in.

I know nothing about the salon, but the DeTour store is pretty awesome. They have cheap hair accessories--headbands, clips, barrettes--and hair product, but they also have women's clothing.

There are a lot of salons/clothing stores in Encinitas, which I think is genius. Not only are you maximizing space, you're pulling girls in right after they got their "hair did." That means they're feelin' like a hundred bucks and they're probably more likely to spend.

Anyway, the clothing at DeTour is rad, mostly because EVERYTHING is designed for long torso girls like me.

I did get a few decent hair cuts here but a friend of my used to be one of the stylists and she had to take the owner to court to get paid. This left a very bad taste in my mouth and it's a shame but I'll never go there again as I choose only support businesses that take care of their staff in a healthy way.

She won by the way.

I am sorry you are unhappy with your haircut.  Obvioulsy, the communication between you and the stylist was unclear and I apologize.  As I understand from my managers, they have attempted to call you several times and you have not returned their calls.

I understand we are unable to please everyone.  This is the nature of the hair business.  I assure you however, my employees are highly trained and although we accept that we are not going to always make each client happy, I have not seen, nor do I expect to ever witness any employee being rude to any customer, despite the circumstance.  I apologize if this was your impression.

You will be receiving a call on our next business day.  Again, thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Sincerely,
Crystal Wells

Note:  If you check out a yelper Terry V., she is my assistant who was kind enough to post my first letter for me, because of computer problems while I was away.  So please read my first letter.  It is important.

Once again, thank all of you for your great reviews of your experiences at Detour.   You opinions matter, so keep them coming.  Of couse, we know that we are unable to please everyone, and believe me, I wish we could.   Know however that we do try and we sincerely hope that you will not hold one person's opinion against any establishment that is making an honest effort to please the public.

Like I mentioned last  time I logged on, we solicit reviews from our customers through Zoomerang.com and we read each survey as it arrives.  A disgruntled yelper felt that this was a  conflict of interest and we strongly disagree.  We reward our customers for taking time out of their busy days to give us feedback on many aspects of their visit to Detour, by mailing out a gift card to be used on their next service and the reward is well received.   For Detour customers, Zoomerang.com is a survey of detailed questions dealing with every aspect of ones visit to Detour.  Our Detour managers open up their minds by asking our customers the hard questions and asking them to give us their honest opinions.  Our managers read every comment and share this information with everyone.  This contemporary method of acquiring sincere and honest  feedback is essential to Detour's growth and future, so thank you Detour customers for the hundreds of reviews we have received.

Life continues to be good at Detour.  Thank you San Diego for being cool and keeping in touch.

Note to Allie:

Thank you for the review of my salon Detour.  Although we would prefer that we receive great compliments from each customer (our goal), we are not always successful, and for that I apologize.

You seem to be open to seeing another styist, so I encourage you to contact one of our managers and speak with him about seeing a stylist who specializes in curly hair.  Although each stylist has extensive training and experience, they are given some level of artistic freedom to apply a variety of hair cutting techniques.  This is what sets Detour apart, as they have a broad range of talent that addresses the same range of tastes and styles.  The technique used on you is not uncommon.  Still, it is our goal to make you happy and extend an value far beyond the price.  Please know that we stand by our service and hope that a second chance will change your opinion of Detour's professionalism and courage to make it right.

Give us a call at 760-634.1999.

My kindest regards,
Crystal Wells

This will be a busy weekend with more new arrivals from Free People and fantastic new styles from up and coming designers.  We recently went to Magic in Las Vegas and met some cool new designers whose clothing designs we think you and your pocket book will like.  We will continue to list these arrivals as they come in.

Great new all leather purses are now in the store.  Come take a look at their unique styles and designes.

It's breast cancer month and Bumble is on top of their game.  Purchase selected products and some of the profits go to breast cancer research.  Every little bit helps.
