One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Affordable, fun-packed, well-liked by my kidlet. Lots of her mixed race friends go there , too, and they love it. Includes hip hop dance, martial arts, theater arts, conflict resolution, arts & crafts, health & nutrition, outdoor fun, and performances to make a parent's heart melt. At Destiny Arts near the Arizmendi Bakery in Emeryville.
Check it out, if you have a kid aged 7-12!
I have worked with youth groups for nearly thirty years and I have never come across an organization as genuine and talented as Destiny Arts.
All the staff that I have had an opportunity to meet are absolutely true in their care and professionalism with my child. They are an amazingly strong crew of dancers and martial arts instructors who give an empowering message to kids, cementing a confidence within a highly conscious and diverse community. A community that teaches the virtues of power through peaceful actions.
My 6-1/2 year old has been doing the martial arts program. He draws from the lessons of his teachers daily. He is becoming aware of his actions and his words, and how they affect people and himself. He knows his body is getting more skilled and stronger. And he is learning to breath before reacting to stimulation. It certainly makes parenting a little easier. :) I can only imagine how this will benefit him as he becomes a teenager someday.
I think if you have any interest in Destiny Arts, please check out a class. Better yet, check out one of their many performances.
At the very least, you'll leave feeling better about our community.
My daughter - now age 18 - started taking dance and martial arts at Destiny when she was 7 years old. Today she is an amazing dancer, choreographer, performer, organizer, black belt and it all started with this amazing organization! There are a range of programs for toddlers to teens as well as community outreach programs in Bay Area schools. Destiny has not only transformed young people lives, I have seen it save lives. This organization deserves community support so also consider making a donation or coming out to one of their shows, especially of the Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company.
Destiny (which stands for - De-Escalation Skills Training Inspiring Nonviolence in Youth) is an amazing non-profit providing opportunities for children of various ages to come and do classes in a variety of subjects from martial arts to dance and theater.
One arm of Destiny is the Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company which puts on original performances (written BY the kids) that include everything from rap to dance to aerial acrobatics to spoken word one-act plays.
These kids tackle heavy handed issues like war, gun violence, global warming, racism...you name it. And they do it with a level of compassion and empathy that not only strives to breakdown barriers but helps to create community as well.
I went to see their performance Dangerous Beauty tonight and was once again inspired by their dedication, talent, and passion for making the world a better place to live. These kids are the REAL DEAL!! Kudos to everyone at this organization that dedicates their time and energy for such a great 'cause.
I highly recommend getting on this mailing list and seeing a show...you will if nothing else come away with that youthful sense of possibility and hope, which is endlessly inspiring!

History
Established in 1998
Our programming began in local elementary schools, providing intensive martial arts and de-escalation training during after-school hours in a program called Project DESTINY. The school-based program then expanded into center-based programming that include classes in martial arts, dance, theater and youth leadership for youth ages 3-18. The programs train all of the youth in self-defense and conflict resolution skills.
Currently, Destiny Arts Center runs after-school, weekend and summer programs that serve over 150 youth at the Center and another 450-500 youth through our Project DESTINY programs in over 20 pre-elementary, elementary, middle and high schools. Every year thousands of youth and adults attend classes, workshops, performances and events led by Destiny adult and youth instructors, students and performers.
