I've tried some other things here, so it's time for an update.  This bakery is probably my favorite.  Everything isn't always perfect, but I have to bump it up to 5 stars for being so irresistible.

I like to bring dessert to family get-togethers, just so I can try other offerings.

* Red velvet cupcakes - fairly new item.  I can't compare them to other places because I haven't had red velvet anywhere else.  They're very sweet, smooth, and with cream cheese frosting.  Not so chocolaty, so not on my radar.

* Bread pudding - delicious!

* Carrot cake - pass.  Not a winner for us.

* Empanadas with chicken, corn, and jack cheese - very rich and satisfying!

* Pumpkin walnut muffins - excellent flavor, moist and pumpkinny!

* Corn muffins - okay.  Not a top pick.

* Chocolate and almond croissants - divine, high quality pastries, but too buttery for my husband and me.  We skip these, but know they are very popular.

* Breads - We love the challah and white bread (my son's favorite for toast).  Generally a fan of whole grain bread, Destination's 9-grain isn't our favorite - the grains are too large (my son won't eat it, but will eat most multigrain breads).

Our favorite items are still the:

* Lemon Tartlet - can't be beat - magnificent tangy lemon goodness.

* Mini Chocolate Bundt Cake - made with sour cream, fudgy,  occasionally overbaked, but when perfect, it's heaven!

* Chocolate Chip Cookies - high chocolate chip to cookie ratio and very tasty.

I like that they sell organic grapefruit juice, among other drinks.  This is a very laid-back bakery that really rocks.

The 1 mile round trip walk burns off the calories of whatever I eat here, right? RIGHT?

No? Oh well, I'll still stuff my face with their chocolate croissant that is sooo buttery good. They've got a variety of tarts that I'm definitely going to try.

The space is small, but I like that you can see the very friendly staff busily baking away behind the counter.

My new fave bakery, but don't worry, popular-spot-in-the-mission-whose-name-rhymes-with -saltine, I still have a place in my tummy for you.

My boyfriend and I stopped at Destination Baking Company for the first time for a late breakfast pastry & coffee.

Their coffee is yummy and we shared a sticky bun of some sort, with nuts, that I couldn't seem to find anything to complain about.

We were tempted by their tartlets and shared a banana cream one with an almond crust - uber delicious!

I liked the atmosphere and how happy all of the workers were - seems like a labor of love!

We really liked this place - and we'll come again for sure.

Just one word: PIE.  I have been searching for 4 years for the ideal fruit pie in San Francisco and finally I found it. Addictive is an understatement. Perfect crust - flaky but not overly buttery or oily, fruit fillings have the perfect level of sweetness - (ie not too sweet ) - no fillers of any note - honestly, perfect.   I have not tasted one (pear cranberry, ollallieberry, apple, peach raspberry....) that wasn't a knockout. BTW they only make pies Thursday - Sunday.
OK - there is another related word: Galettes -Compared to the pies, a different, more buttery, sweeter crust; equally delicious fruit fillings - and these they make every day.

My three year and I go here for the tarts and sticky buns - both delicious!  Our favorite tart is the raspberry.  They have kids' books and bright picture windows with cushions that make it homey and nice, and the staff is very cordial and go out of their way to make you feel taken care of.  Very rich, so we only go once in a while, but it is a really wonderful little bakery with delicious smells always wafting from it.

I have to walk past this shop every single morning.  The smells that waft out of it are amazing.  Dangerous.  Like every morning.  It's torture.  I've had a nibble of their peach pie which was mind blowing (esp. since I'm not a pie person).  The croissant was uber buttery, to the point where it was too much.  I will say it was nice and flaky, it was a really yummy croissant, but not my fave due to the overly buttery-ness.  I did like the size of said croissant, tho, it was very normal and not all steroid-y like many I encounter.

I used to stop here all the time on my way to the BART station when I had to go there on my way to work.  They open at 6:30, and I'd stop by around 6:45, just as the cinnamon rolls were coming out of the oven.  I'd always get a cinnamon roll and a milk and eat it on the way to work.  Delicious.

Unfortunately, I don't go that way to work anymore.  I have gone to Destination a few times since then, but it was later in the day.  I have to say, the cinnamon roll is not nearly as good when it's not ultra-fresh.  The cinnamon rolls I've gotten in the afternoon are fairly disappointing.  Most of the rest of their stuff that I've tried is so-so, such as their cupcakes.

So if you can go when they first open, do so.  Otherwise, go at your own risk.

PDG - pretty dang good!

As I was leaving yoga class, the scent of cinnamon rolls just about roped me into the bakery.

After perusing the pastries, I decided on a sticky bun (with nuts). Not being a selfish person, I also picked up a croissant and a pain au chocolat for the husband and child. (When we all have pastries, it doesn't make me look like a piggy.)

The sticky bun was out of this world - the first sticky bun I've had where they used cardamom - yum!

But the real star was the croissant and pain au chocolat. They're slightly crispy on the outside and rich, buttery and a bit dough-y on the inside. My husband, a Parisian (and self declared know-it-all on what a croissant should be like), and I decided that Destination's croissants are THE best this side of France.

Now, I'm trying to figure out how to make Destination Bakery a convenient stop on my way to work...

I had a mini-birthday party last weekend, and "accidentally" bought too many tartlets for dessert. Oops.

On the actual day of my birthday, I decided to indulge in the goodies sitting idly in my refrigerator, cause hey, you only turn thirty once.  And besides, it'd be a tragedy to let them go to waste.

Three tartlets gone in just as many seconds.  The banana cream seriously made me happier than words can even describe.  Try it for yourself, because they really are perfection.

Having lived pretty close to Glen Park for many years, I had never explored beyond the BART station itself.  I didn't know that there is a beautiful valley with a nice trail between SOTA (what used to be Macteer high school) and Glen Park station.  I also didn't know there are a dozen adorable shops on Chenery.

Following my cousin's advice, we walked a bit on Chenery looking for THE bakery.  No wonder she forgot the name: there are no huge, visible signs outside.

The inside is clean.  Actually, a little too clean.  Apparently we were there too late (around 3 or 4ish on a weekend), and most things seem to be sold out already.

So we bought a tart and a bread pudding.  My husband said the tart was okay, but the bread pudding we shared was quite good.  Egg-y, buttery, sugary on top, and has raisins.  Reminds me of nice bread puddings served in restaurants.  Except the portion is pretty big, about 4" x 4".

my man Ross told me about the chocolate croissants that were so good you have to order two of them.  Because while your eating the first one in the joint before you even pay for it while they make your drink, you have to eat another one when you get home, and you must get one to go.

So I went and lets just say I will never eat the chocolate croissants at starbucks or anywhere else for that matter ... once you get done with half of one you really hope there is another one in the bag

omfg

the staff is nice and they take credit card, parking is so-so so I would do a drive by order to-go, it has a few spots to sit but its a lil tight.

love it!

Destination Baking Company's fruit tartlets are the cutest tarts I've ever seen.  I especially love the Banana Tart; perfectly layered with whip cream, not overly creamly as other places seem to do.  I would like to see a bit more banana's in  the tart, but overall, I love coming here to for my fruit tarts.

I hope to try some of their other pastries in the future .

my search for the best chocolate croissant is an ongoing continuum of yelping and driving to random spots. their chocolate croissant didn't look that appealing and i decided that i was going to save myself the calories and try it but probably not like it and give the rest away. but once i took a bite of it i couldn't stop. it wasn't because the chocolate was amazing or perfectly evenly distributed amongst the bread, because it wasn't. but it was SO buttery good that i had no choice but to consume it in it's entirety. happy tummy!

If a customer wants a pie, and you have a rack full of them, sell them a darn pie!

Apparently Destination only sells their pies to the public on weekends, and the rest of the time they go to Mission Pies. Is it any wonder our economy is going funny? I got a chocolate chip cookie instead, and it wasn't stellar. It was a soft baked cookie, with good chips, but the cookie part of the cookie was lacking that key ingredient called flavor. I really like the cookies down the block at Canyon Market much better.  Of course I'm bitter because they wouldn't sell me a damn pie even though the place was flooded with fresh bakes.

edit: Mission Pie now bakes their own pies, but I'm sure Destination is still baking pies we can't buy on weekdays just out of habit. WWHFD?  (What Would Huckleberry Finn Do?)

I ducked in here one day because I saw they were selling Hamentashen.  I got the last six.  I asked if they would make more and the owner told me: 1) They are very popular; and 2) No.  Not this year.  I mean, come on, if they're popular, why not make them?  They were good hamentashen though.

I've been going to this bakery since it was Creighton's.  Lately everytime I go to get something they are sold out. The owner told me that next time I wanted a cake or pie I should order one at least two days in advance.  OK.   So I went in to order a pie and they told me that I couldn't order a pie in advance.  I offered to pay for it up front.  They still said no, that I just had to show up and hope for the best. The pie isn't that good that I'm going to schedule my day around scoring a pie.

Could someone remind them that they are a bakery ?  Quick review of the business model.  People come in and give them money and they give people baked goods.

Let's start where I usually start at Destination, which is with the croissants. They are the best I've ever had, anywhere. I spent a week in Paris this year and didn't  find any croissants quite as good. And I looked. Joe's croissants are loaded with butter but manage not to be greasy. They have a very mildly sour taste, in a good way, the way very high quality butter like Strauss gives off a tiny bit of sourness. And they are crisp but not burnt. The plain croissants are particularly good. I have had dozens of them over the years and the quality has never varied.

No, they are not dense and bread-y, as another reviewer commented, albeit disparagingly. If you go around the corner to Pebbles Cafe, which carries products from Bay Bread, you can get this kind of bread-y croissant. It is vastly inferior to the Destination croissant in my opinion. It is unnuanced, unchallenging, and uninteresting, more or less just a roll and not really worthy of being called  croissant.

My partner usually starts with one of the cinnamon rolls, a sticky bun, or a bear claw. These are equally yummy - yeasty, buttery, and sweet without being cloying.

After lunch, I often drop in at Destination to get one of their small pastries. They are yummy, perfect with coffee, and not too large, very suitable for an afternoon snack without stuffing one's face.

I think of San Francisco commercial pastry generally as a sad state of affairs, partly because the product is often so large and at the same time so tasteless. Eating a chocolate chip cookie can be like eating an entire stick of butter. Scones can be big enough to feed a family of four. Not at Destination - smaller sized things, but very high quality, and that's just how I like it. The fruits used in tarts there are especially good - very high quality apricots and strawberries. I have spoken with the owner about this and he has told me that he sources much of his produce from local organic farms. I am not an ideologue when it comes to local produce and sustainability issues, but trust my taste buds, and Destination has given them some very nice moments.

Cakes are very good, too. A few years ago, we ordered our wedding cake from this bakery. It was beautiful, and unbelievably tasty.

Destination is far and away my favorite bakery in San Francisco. How it has escaped a mention in Patricia Unterman's San Francisco Food Lover's Guide for all these years is just beyond me.

I so want to love Tartine - the place is beautiful, and so is their product, and it's such a cool scene, and it's closer to where I live. But every time I go there, I think to myself "this just doesn't taste as good as Destination." Not even close, really.

I would love to talk about the fine assortment of baked goods featured at Destination, however this place was CLEANED OUT by the time we rolled in here at 10:30 Saturday morning. I still got the gist of it though.

I hadn't had breakie yet so I wasn't looking for something too sweet anyway. I opted for the vegetable samosa which even though it was not authentic as it was more a baked good than an Indian staple, it was delicious.

None-the-less, it hit the spot and I was pleased to have had the opportunity to visit and support such a fine and wholesome establishment.

It started off on a positive note when I got a  killer parking spot right across the street.  The tall blond woman at the counter's smile and attitude just set things even more on track. But when I sank my teeth into the flakey, butter edge of the apricot pastry I knew what I'd heard was TRUE!!! It was so delicious...I saw the sign that read "Ask us about our Birthday Cakes"...I think I have to check that out SOON!!!!

Needed to stave off hunger before class so I headed here for a caffeine fix and a little something to nosh on. Cute little corner coffee house with a few tables to sit at wit big windows to let the beautiful sun shine in. The place was filled with the smell of fresh bread and cookies right out of the oven. I scanned the two display cases and spotted potatoes samosa empanadas....oh yea!

The mocha latte was like any other mocha latte, no big whoop there. The potaote samosa empanada tasted like an actual potatoe samosa (spices, peas and potatoes) but instead of the flaky philo crust it was that soft doughy shell. The guy at the counter told me that I HAD to try their bread pudding and so he slipped a piece in my bag. Boy was he right! That bread pudding was damn good! Not too much raisins but enough so that I had one in each bite. $6 for my breakfast and caffeine fix...sweet!

I live on the other side of town, and drive all the way over to destination bakery just to have some of the city's best pastries.

(with high gas, I might cut down on that)

But it's good, and the attitude of the people there and the owner Joe is really positive
Plus, the cinammon (sic) rolls and cupcakes, plus tarts, are really, really good

I thought I was basically done with active Yelp!ing.  But I still log on everyday and read reviews from my homies and stalkees (aka friends and favourites, respectively).  And today, I was hit with this feeling of..  "Oh sigh.  I wish I had reviews to write.  I wish my Yelp page weren't so pathetic-looking.  I wish I still felt something."  Then my cold, cold heart melted a little, and sitting there in the thaw, was my love for Destination Bakery.

And speaking of renewed loves:
I *just* saw John Mayer's VH1 show - "John Mayer has a TV Show" - despite its old news.  Yeah, I live in a hole, where we only watch Deal or No Deal and other manner of terrible things.  Anyway.  He's hilarious.  And I love (watching) him.

If only John Mayer worked at Destination.  I'd go everyday.  And I bet you their tip jar would be spilling over.

But even though he doesn't work there, I still manage to make my way over there occasionally.  I've only tried: lemon tartlet, baguette, bread pudding.

Ok, so the lemon tartlet was just like any other tartlet.  And the baguette was a baguette.  But then again, my baguette palette is not awesome, but I generally just LOVE bread anyway.

But there are two reasons I keep coming back:
1) The bread pudding.  Despite the fact it has raisins (BLECH) and is a bit too sweet and maybe is not doughy enough...  I do Really like it.  And to be honest, I'm pretty sure I like it more than the Tartine bread pudding that I had only once.  It has this lovely, burnty sugar appeal on the surface bread peaks.  I also love that the flavour is tinged with buttery and vanilla-y goodness.  And it's a HUGE piece for a mere $2.75.

2) Part of the appeal also lies in that fact that it has such a corner bakery, neighbourhoody feel.  There are always a few people inside and/or outside, just chillin with a snack and a newspaper.  And even though it's not in my 'hood, it's still within walking distance.  Combine that with the homeyness, and I just cannot help but love this place.  It's my great weekend treat to make my way over and get a piece of bread pudding (lasts me two days since I discovered the concept of portion control).  I certainly deserve it after climbing the hill that is the end of Noe Street to Laidley (yeah, it doesn't sound that impressing, but my chest pains beg to differ.  Google Map:terrain that 'ness, ok?).

As added bonus: The pies at Mission Pie are baked here - anyplace that enables my pie consumption is delightening beyond comprehension.

I am determined to visit often enough and order the bread pudding each time, such that someday I can just roll in, give a knowing nod to the dude at the counter, and say "i'll have the us(ual)" (How does one spell that phonetically?  "yujje"?).  Yeah, that's right, I've got goals.

While we're on the topic of nothing in particular, here are few more tidbits of random trivia/my feelings:
-I am going to start eating my cereal with water.  Because milk is gross and I just need something to dilute the sugar in my Smart Start.
-My favourite Favourites are Peter M. and Keane L.
-Sugar crystals are not as soluble as salt crystals.

I'm not sure if I came too early or came too late (10 am), but for some reason, it didn't seem like they had much product.  They must bake really small batches or they're immensely popular (or both).  It wasn't crowded at the time but maybe everyone knows to come early.

I had a hard time identifying the croissants because they didn't look like the traditional croissants that I'm used to and they don't label their goods.  They were dark brown and not as fluffy.  Honestly, they looked more like crescents.  I was skeptical but I tried the chocolate croissant and though it wasn't the prettiest it was excellent.  It's flaky on the outside and denser than usual.  Definitely made with plenty of butter.  It needed more chocolate but that's a minor flaw.

They only had two cupcakes left: vanilla cake with chocolate frosting.  This was my first time receiving a cold cupcake (refrigerated) and I didn't like that aspect too much.  The cake was undeniably dry.  The frosting was hard (well it was refrigerated) but I will say that it tasted like they used good chocolate.  I liked the chocolate non-pareil they put on top.  But I don't think cupcakes are their forte.

I sampled a white bread that was very good - chewy crust, tender inside.   They also serve up espresso drinks.

Butter...*drool*

Destination Bakery is the single reason why I had to move out of the lovely Glen Park Village.  The scent of buttery baked goods used to draw me down the street and tempt me to doughy indulgence.  My most overwhelming weakness was their chicken empenadas.  Words cannot fully describe how wonderful this savory meat pot pie-like pastry perfection is and how extremely happy it makes me to give in to it's power.  The ever so slight crispiness of the outside is complimented well by the inside's warm stewy gravy chicken filling - this combination can comfort you to no end.

The chocolate croissant , blueberry muffins, and the cheddar-scallion scones are also divine!

Mmm, butter...*drool*

After reading all of the glowing reviews, I really, truly wanted to love Destination. I want to be a cool Glen Parker and fit in with the hip, up and coming neighborhood.

But I can't.

There's another bakery out there (rhymes with sateen) that has totally ruined Destination for me.

I ordered a lot because I didn't want to miss out on ANYTHING.

Let's begin with the tartlets:

I had the chocolate, mazarin (raspberry/almond), and banana cream. I prefer a flaky crust over the crumbly one that is offered at Destination. The fillings are simple, but unimaginative. Chocolate too rich, raspberry too sweet, and banana cream just left me wanting something more.

On to the cakes:

It's true that they keep their cakes in the refrigerator. I suspect that this is necessary because it's like 80 degrees in there. The ovens are literally 10 feet away from the cash register.

The cold cakes (cupcake, carrot cake, moon pie) make the frostings hard, so I waited for them to come to room temperature before enjoying them. The cupcake was yellow bottom with chocolate top. My favorite combination of ALL TIME. To my dismay, the cake is super dry! Like sawdust topped with chocolate ganache. :( Majorly unpleasant. Cupcakes, in my opinion, should be frosted with frosting and not ganache. The carrot cake was okay. But totally like something I make. Not something that I would pay for.  With so many glowing reviews of the moon pie, I was saddened with the fatty, tasteless confection that I purchased.

The shining star was the chocolate croissant! I love the small shape and the sprinkle of salt on top. Terribly chic! Nice and flaky and just the right amount of chocolate.

I threw in a loaf of plain challah at the last moment. I like how they don't over bake it. I like my challah a little pale. After I dry it out, I'm going to make Sateen's bread pudding with it tonight. :D

One last note about pricing. While the Destination banana cream tartlet is a mere $2.50, there really isn't anything in there besides banana-flavored custard and cream. Sateen's banana cream tart has chocolate, caramel, sliced bananas, custard, and cream for about $5. And about 10 times the size of the tartlet! I know where to get more bang for my buck!

I was bubbly with excitement about this bakery.... and they had my ultimate cupcake - yellow cake w/ chocolate frosting (unlike my fave nearby Noe Valley Bakery).  Had I finally found my cupcake mecca?  But as I bit into the cupcake, it was so.....DRY.....

I'm quite disappointed. *sigh*.  So much promise, and yet such a letdown.

Two dollars and fifty cents for a moderate sized chocolate croissant seemed a bit steep given the ~$2 ones I usually get around the FiDi. One bite was all I needed to appreciate the perfectly proportioned chocolate oozing between its light, flaky pastry blanket, tasting fresh off the baking pan.

What a shame I didn't visit this hidden gem more often in my old 'hood. I'll definitely be back for more...

I can't speak to cakes, croissants, sticky buns, or cinammon rolls.  I don't eat 'em.

But I *can* speak to pie.  I love pie.  I adore pie.  Who cares about cake or cookies or ice cream when there's pie?  Really.

So if you want some damn good pie with flaky (but not greasy) crust, fresh homemade filling (just the right amount, too), perfectly spiced, baked, and porportioned, your destination is Destination.  Nothing is too sweet or too tart.  It's all...just right. Mmmm.... pie.

p.s.: Not in the mood for pie?  Get their tarts!  Like a mini pie but with a cookie crust.  And so many flavors: lemon, lime, raspberry, apple, pecan, chocolate...mmmm.... tarts.

Actually, 3 and a 1/2 stars.

My carrot cake was yummy.  It didn't have any raisons or walnuts and the frosting wasn't the BEST I've had on carrot cake.  But, it was still very tasty.

I was a little bummed that their lemon tarts aren't made with meyer lemons.  They use meyer lemons in a cake, why not use them in their tarts as well?  The tarts are more of a one person bakery item than a larger cake is.  I don't know, just my thoughts on that and that I'm also a HUUUGE fan of meyer lemons....
Plus, I don't want to have to purchase a full size cake just to enjoy the flavor of meyer lemons:)

I'm guessing the am time has more of a selection than the later part of the day.  I mean, since it is a bakery and all.  I could be wrong though....

I stopped by Destination Baking Co. at 6:40 am. The neighborhood is quiet at that time and there are places to park.

There were numerous hot, fragrant baked items just coming out of the ovens... I chose four pastries-- a chocolate croissant, a plain croissant, a cherry Danish, and a giant cinnamon raisin bun. I gave the plain croissant and cinnamon bun to co-workers and didn't get to taste them, but another co-worker and I shared the chocolate croissant and cherry Danish. Both were still warm, and made of flaky, crispy, chewy, melt-in-your mouth dough... I didn't even know a bread item could be all those things at once until I tried Destination Baking Co's treats!

The cherry filling of the cherry Danish was tart and delicious and obviously made from real cherries (they probably don't have this Danish in winter, but maybe they'll have apple then). The chocolate croissant has just the right amount of complex, dark chocolate filling, with some coarse sugar sprinkled on the top of the bread. it could definitely cause a chocolate croissant addiction.

All four pastries together were $9. The cinnamon bun is enormous and definitely enough for two people to share, and the bakery makes all their dough fresh (many bakeries have freshly baked pastries, but most are made with frozen dough, frozen cinnamon rolls, etc). They use organic ingredients when possible, so I think the pastries are a good deal!

Bad place to go if you are on a diet. However they have The Best chocolate chip cookies in town and I've done the research. Their chocolate brownies are right up there too.  If you are dieting, try their low fat applesauce cake which is just terrific. Great folks. Joe's the best and his staff is fabulous. Did I mention their challah?  Every Friday. Fresh. Delicious. The challenge is getting it home intact.

Do you know that incredible sensation? The one that begins when the smell of baking butter and croissant dough enters your body, speeds to your brain, considers orgasmic-like gestures, moves on to other pleasure centers, then makes your mouth water? That's what Destination is all about. They make their croissant dough, and everything else, from scratch, and use very seasonal ingredients/preparations. For instance - their pies reflect the fruits in season. And as a great lover of pies, I must tell you they have the greatest strawberry rhubarb pie I have ever tasted. They also make hot cross buns around easter, with fruit they candy themselves.

*Everything* here is outstanding. The chocolate and fruit tartletts will make you smile. The chocolate crossiants, with their outstanding coffee will make you feel like curling up in their sunny window seats and snuggle with strangers. Their baguettes are the best in the city, in my opinion, and the pies...mmmmmmmm.....they might make you cry if you love them like I do.

In my opinion, Destination is actually better than Tartine. AND their service is outstanding - incredibly friendly folks who know this is a neighborhood joint. Lots of locals and regulars who adore the place and would probably be upset if they knew I was sharing this secret. (But you deserve the joy this place wil provide...you really do...)

5 stars for the Pecan coffee cake. Wow. I've had three bites now and needed to pause to share how yummy this pretty, swirly, moist, rich, crumbly, nutty cake tastes. I am really happy I picked it.

I don't drink coffee and I'm not much on sweats and deserts...

I don't know what it is with the sticky buns at this place, but I turn into a sugar craving maniac whenever I happen anywhere in the vicinity. I'm pretty sure they put crack in them....

I love their different fruit tarts with the crumbly, buttery crusts and the amazing fruit fillings.  This is definitely my favorite Glen Park destination!

On weekends they have delicious fruit pies also.  Think of those delicious little fruit tarts only in a much bigger size.  Oh my!

Love the scones and cookies, the pain au chocolat is excellent as well.  The bread is pretty good though can be hit or miss.  I thoroughly enjoyed the quiche both times I got it, and the empenadas are good if not a little bland.

Got a Pecan pie for Thanksgiving from them and albeit pricey, it was excellent.

So their selection is small, but everything is fresh, especially their fruit tartlets. $2.75 each. Bet you can't eat just one!
