This was our 4th stop on the 11/22/09 "Cupcake Crawl" tour. The price was right for these cupcakes. After going to Butter Lane, Sugar Sweet Sunshine, and Babycakes, these were very small in size, but very very unique! I shared a "premium" s'mores cupcake with my boyfriend.

The cake itself was pretty bland, but the chocolate filling and toasted marshmallow topping definitely gave it a unique and delicious taste!

The decor of this otherwise hole-in-the-wall place was unexpected: very posh. It kind of had the feeling of being in an Ikea catalog.

Little did I know that after this stop we'd be going to Crumbs which blows this place out of the water. However, the unique quality of the cupcake menu (and the assortment of other things that I didn't try) definitely makes this a fun place to stop.

I came here to get red velvet cupcakes after I found out that Crumbs had run out. I was supposed to wait for my girlfriend to have cupcakes with me because she's not in New York right now. So I decided to come here, get some, package them up, and priority ship them over.

I ordered two red velvet and two assorted random ones. For four very mini cupcakes, it's not the cheapest despite people complaining about Crumbs' pricing while they have huge cupcakes. I had to delicately package them and ship them off.

Now at this point, you're probably asking why I'm reviewing something I haven't tried. Well, I'm asking myself that too while I'm writing this. However, I can either come off as a mushy sweetheart boyfriend or an arrogant, conceited doucheskank that just wants to boast about how large his penis is.

You people get to decide.

after drooling over the awesome photos of cupcakes and other desserts on yelp i knew i had to come see what the hype was about and for me, it was just that - hype.

when i walked in the store i was immediately excited, thinking this is it, i've found yet another wonderful dessert place. mainly because as soon as you open the door you are overwhelmed with a strong (and quite delicious smell) of chocolate and baked goods. for a minute i though i wondered into willy wonka's!

as i looked at all the baked perfections i decided on the smores and banana cupcakes in addition to the brioche bread budding.

when i got home i tried a bite of each and my excitement quickly turned to disappointment. how can something so pretty not taste good?

the smores cupcake lacked a bold flavor, as i figured anything with fluff icing and chocolate ganache inside must be really good - i found it to be nearly tasteless.

as for the banana cupcake - the cake itself was really nice, it was moist, light and had a great banana flavor. but the icing - it's not buttercream, which is fine, but it tasted like i was eating a chunk of soft butter, and i love butter, but on a cupcake, not so much.

the brioche bread pudding was good, but again, nothing memorable and certainly not worth going back for or recommending to anyone.

all in all, i found this place to be quite a disappointment and will not be going back.

Without exception, this is hands-down the best cupcake I've ever had in my entire life.  Why anybody goes to Magnolia Bakery is beyond me...  I never will again.  After eating at ChikaLiciouos, a Magnolia Cupcake is like eating a burger at the KMart food court.

The red velvet cupcake can be skipped... just go straight for the coconut cupcake.  Transcendent!

Third time's a charm.

The first time was great. I drove into the City, double parked the car while my friend bought some treats to go, and I split my gifted S'mores cupcake four ways. That fourth of a cupcake was pretty darn good. A little sticky, but definitely good.

Second time was an act of generosity. I donated my S'mores cupcake to my out of town guests so that they each could have one for breakfast.

Third time was double the fun. I got kind of jealous that my friends got to have their cupcakes for breakfast so I went to Chikalicious Dessert Club for my own treats to go. Armed with a green tea and chocolate macaron and a S'mores and a Triple Chocolate cupcake I made my way home in anticipation.

The whole S'mores cupcake was just as good as I remembered it the first time. It's the marshmallow topping that's really good. It's lightly torched and is just like campfire marshmallows. It even tastes a little burnt. The filled chocolate portion of the cupcake is very rich but of high quality chocolate. Never say no to ganache.

Everyone says the S'mores cupcake is the best but I liked the Triple Chocolate even better. The frosting was mousse like. The cake was moist and it was topped with a single chocolate crispy. Even though it was all chocolate it was surprisingly light. F*ck7ng good.

As for the macarons, not bad. They're like big macaron sandwiches. Light, chewy and crumbly. They're not as dainty as they look!

After four, I want more.

Maybe the fifth visit will justify five stars?

Rachel A. was doing her act of kindness when she treated me and the hubby to some desserts from Chikalicious.  Thanks Rach! I tried the S'mores cupcake which tasted as it should.  I'm not a huge fan of marshmallow but it was still yummy.  All I needed was a little campfire to melt that thing and it would've been perfect.

We also got the green tea macaroon and another flavor that I still can't identify.  In any case, I was rather disappointed in the macaroons.  I bit into it and the whole thing broke apart into crumbs and flew across the table from my mouth.  Definitely not what I was expecting.  It tasted like it was old because it wasn't even chewy.  I've had great ones in London and Paris so of course this didn't even come close to those.

Definitely stick to the cupcakes and it'll all be worth it.

Maybe age is changing me, but I think I'm slowly getting sick of overly sweet buttercream of Magnolia, Butter Lane, etc. and prefer the light buttercream ChikaLicious uses. Their cupcakes are light and fluffy. I love the coconut! I'm also impressed at how this place keeps on adding new items to the menu. Next time, I have to check out a macaron!

I don't like pasta...but when a restaurant can change that (yea Giacomo's), you automatically receive a 5 star.   I don't like cookies and I def. don't like cupcakes.  After a night of ChikaLicious, oh boy did my attitude change.

You see, cupcakes must be moist and the frosting must be light, unsweetened and most importantly, not overwhelming.  Everything must be perfect in terms of the size, cupcake/frosting ratio and freshness in quality in order to be an excellent cupcake.  This why I've never had a good cupcake.

But at ChikaLicious, they make each cupcake with extreme care and love.

Let me just say S'mores, Triple chocolate, and Red Velvet CupCakes:  WOW.  Chocolate Chip Cookies...DOUBLE WOW.

Happened upon ChikaLicious after a friend and I checked Yelp for the closest hot chocolate joint. This place was it! We entered the tiny shop and ordered the hot chocolate - $4.50!! - and each got a cupcake. I went for the red velvet; he got the coconut. The cupcake was delicious - the frosting was smooth and light and the cake was moist and tasty. The hot chocolate was insane. It's definitely real melted chocolate all mixed together, so one little cup is basically like a full meal (which justified the hefty price!) Great little place (with uncomfortable seats - I was sitting on a drum stool basically) but I'd probably come here every so often, even if it's just to try all their gorgeous cupcakes. Really, they are so good looking, you don't want to eat them!

Macaroons are where it's at. Crisp, chewy cookie and perfectly whipped filling. Flavors, from strawberry to salted caramel, are subtle. Loves it. The carrot ginger cake and chocolate cupcake were beautifully iced but average.

Space is dimly lit with smooth jazz coursing through he speakers.Cafe is affordable compared to it's made-to-order sister restaurant just across the street. Their offerings weren't particularly complex but I liked the ambiant privacy of the cafe.

Hmmm... desserts.

Chikalicious has a wonderful dessert menu. I've been here twice and loved it.

Their vanilla sundae is AMAZING. My friend seemed to think it was ok, but I thought the vanilla was quite tasty ( very pure is how I would describe it) and the toppings on it, from the chocolate, pistachio and whatever flake bits they had just added to how wonderfully tasty it was.

Their cupcakes look so cute, almost plastic-like with the frosting glaze! I had a red velvet cupcake, which was tiny and priced nicely. The cupcake was good, though not as moist as say Sweet Revenge's cupcakes.

Very cute place to go and good for late night snacks.

For $1.60 you get a sweet little bit o'heaven.  These cupcakes are the perfect size, look too gorgeous to eat, and smell absolutely ethereal.

I am judging this place based one cupcake--the coconut one-- but I will definitely be back to try the rest of their selection!

It is a cute dessert place. Lots of FOBs... Sorry for pointing you out, fobs. The price is a little excessive for the amount of food although the quality of the dessert is fairly good. The sweetness is not overwhelming and allows other dimentions to come out.

I much prefer the bar. Go across the street. Go.

ChikaLicious Bow Chicka Wow Wow! That's my mouth reacting to the party that ChikaLicious Desserts delivered. Damn. Folks, I have found the best cupcakes and Strawberry Shortcake in New York City and it's here in the East Village. Wow. I don't ever want the party in my mouth to stop but I'm gonna get fat if I come here regularly.

Pro's - ChikaLicious has the most amazing coffee flavored cupcake ever. For $1.50 the price ain't too bad, the portion not too small or big. Creamy (not stiff) frosting and a moist cake to bite into -- with a surprise! coffee chocolatey center. Whoa...I like!
Strawberry Shortcake was moist, creamiest whipped cream, and a light cake -- if you're a fan of light desserts (think Chinese cakes), you'll love this. If you like big Southern-style super sugary desserts, shoo off.

Con's -- Long lines! But worth the wait. The place is really small so if you want to eat, get take-out, go to a park or your apt. and stuff your face down in privacy.

PS: This small bistro-like dessert cafe is RIGHT ACROSS the street from the posh Dessert Bar. Same owners, much confusion! Difference? Much smaller price + wait!

SF please take note. Your cupcakes are good. I mean, well, I thought they were. But you see, I was just limited in my sight. I went to the other coast and I saw what you could become. Your cupcakes need a cupcake roll model. I have just the cupcake...

My head was already spinning in a sugar high. My body was exhausted from the New York heat and humid air. After the ChikaLicious Dessert Bar, we went a whopping 40 ft away to the Dessert Club. The amount of sugar I consumed in this window of time is not recommended if you're not ready for it. I suggest water. Lots of water. Did I take my own advice? Nope! I just got even more sugared up/out here. Was it worth it 3 hours later almost passing out in the subway en route to a movie? Oh yes it was.

There were two distinct cupcakes I want to mention here. The Red Velvet and the Smore. They both have their own virtues, and therefore, their own paragraphs. I also believe this is the most I will be writing about... a cupcake. Seriously.

Red Velvet cupcakes are one of those things that should be simple to do, and yet, remain so incredibly easy to butcher. What is it with my unforgiving love of these kinds of foods? (See: Eggs Benedict and Paprika) Your chocolate selection is key, and you strike a balance between your shortening and butter. I crave a rich chocolate flavor that lacks the heavy feeling of butter and the slimy texture of shortening. Aced. It was a denser cake, without the buttery or greasy feeling. The chocolate I'm pretty sure was bittersweet, although I forgot to ask. And the cream cheese frosting was just the right amount to go with the chocolate cake. Again. Aced.

On the experimental side was the Smore cupcake. Between the two of us, I don't like smores. And yet if you were to ask me to secretly run away with one of the two cupcakes I had, I think I'd abscond with the Smore cupcake into the night. Everything about this cupcake was perfect, all the way down to me needing to realize this was, in fact, a cupcake made with the same traditional means as everything else in the case. The cupcake was filled! Filled with a chocolate ganache. As if that wasn't close enough, instead of frosting in the traditional sense, a marshmallow puff was used. I'd also now like to reverse my position on smores on the basis of this cupcake alone.

Can someone please figure out how to safely get these things traveling on a plane? I feel like my home coast is missing out.

Waitaminute...whatdayamean there are TWO ChikaLicious?!? ChikaLiciouses? ChikaLishi? ChikaLiciousenesseses?

Anyways, we were told we had to come to ChikaLicious for dessert. Having spent way too much time (or was that not enough time?) at the Met (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), we were running late. Having read that ChikaLicious closed at 10:45 (in retrospect: the original, not the Dessert Club), and seeing as how we got off the subway at 9:30, we hustled over to ChikaLicious for a dessert dinner. Being on the south side of 10th street, the first thing we saw was the Dessert Club.

So we hustled in, got in the line, and ogled the delicious menu and the sweet treats everyone was scarfing down. Our girlfriend and I's agreement was one dessert each (gotta save room for the real meal, after all). As such, we picked the Green Tea Gran Marnier Cake and their signature Cheesecake. Then, as I was waiting in line, I looked on the wall and noticed their Adult Chocolate pudding poster staring me in the face. So naturally, I got that too. That's right, three mini-desserts equals one heck of an amuse bouche.

Their desserts were phenomenal. It's hard to rank, but if I had to, I'd go cheesecake one, green tea cake two, and the pudding three. That's what I get for the impulse buy, I guess. The desserts run around $3 to $4 per dessert, which sounds pricey but is totally worth it. Especially the cheesecake.

While sitting, we looked across the street and realized that the REAL (original?) ChikaLicious sat across the street. We left. It was 10:15. There was still a line outside ChikaLicious. More dessert for dinner? Sure, why not! We went. We waited in line. We ate TWO ChikaLiciouses in one night. But the second is a whole 'nother story.

We chose the dessert club over the dessert bar across the street because the dessert bar looked overbearingly full of themselves while the club was homey and down to earth. A counter, wooden tables, small space, cozy. The bar looked like something out of 2001: A Space Odyssey. All white with inflated prices.

Choosing the club was a good idea.

The servers were laid back dudes just selling treats, take them or leave them. Even they refused to put on airs, which gave me a relief.

We had the S'mores cupcake and vanilla soft serve. It was all so damn good that we went back for more, bought a mocha chocolate cupcake and devoured it. Madness. These cupcakes beat out everything in the area. Only Crumbs outdoes these guys in the cupcake category. Amazing.

Don't fight. Just go there and eat a treat. Get it and eat. Yeah you eat it.

To be honest, it's more of a 4 star place because they don't have a bathroom and the coffee isn't good, but I'm throwing in a star because it's not the dessert bar, which made me ill just to look inside the place.

Okay bye.

i ordered 3 cupcakes total and an adult pudding~ the black and white cupcake was good~ it kinda taste like those ding dongs~ wrapped in the foil paper~ hahah

the adult pudding was very bitter.. but again.. for those who appreciate chocolate... you will love the bitterness~ like me!! I LOVE CHOCOLATE!! in the pudding on the bottom they had this crunchy things.. i was good~

i took two cupcakes for my sister and put it in the fridge... and after work.. she had a bite.. and told me it wasnt that great.. and i tried it.. yeah.. it wasnt!! the frosting was weird!! i guess when you buy it and eat it right there its good.. but not after you put it in the fridge... how odd...

a good cupcake should be good reguardless if it was in the fridge or not! :)

If you're like me and you like light desserts that delicately grace your tongue with gentle sweetness, then this place is surely a hallmark for dessert stops. I tried the NY cheesecake (light, fluffy, toying texture of cheesecake or mousse with flecks of vanilla bean), the molten lava cake (deep dark chocolate with a perfectly crisp exterior), and the vanilla pudding (not particularly my favorite but all right), and the mocha latte... all in one sitting. It leaves you feeling content, and not like you just downed a McDonalds sausage mcmuffin (I know you know that feeling)..

If you're the type that likes super sweet, rich, unhealthy, bold, bring-you-down a couple pounds desserts like those food coloring drenched supermarket cakes, then GETTOUTTAHEA! This place isn't for you. My friend is like that and she did not like this place at all. But I do! and that my friends, is soooo.. New. York.

You rave, and another  rants. C'est la vie~

This is a story of thoughtlessly thoughtful service and inadvertent gluttony.

A friend and I decided to stop in Chikalicious to split one dessert after a filling dinner.  When we noticed the reasonable prices and the manageable portions, we decided to split two and got the New York cheesecake and the molten lava cake.

The cheesecake was quite good, served creamy and fluffy in a cup with lovely little crumblies and tri-star strawberries.  The chocolate cake with a small ball of vanilla bean ice cream, however, was overbaked.  The outside had erupted and hardened into a chocolate crust, and the majority of the gooey center had started to lose its rich flow as well.  The result was decent chocolate flavor with a chalky mouthfeel mitigated only in part by the ice cream.  The ice cream, incidentally, was disappointing.  It had a safe sweet cream flavor to cut the richness of chocolate, but it was no stand-alone scoop.

Now, being the fat kids we are, my friend and I proceeded to finish not only the cheesecake, but also the mediocre chocolate cake, lamenting its mediocrity all the while.  Just when we had eaten all but the crumbs, the cashier called to us and let us know that a new one was on its way from the kitchen, as he had noticed on its way out that ours was a flop.

The replacement was delicious.  The ice cream was still nothing special, but it did go well with the soft giving mound of cake filled with slow-running chocolava.  You know that feeling of surprise when you find out that some heinous acquaintance has a hot brother?  The cake was such a vast improvement over its predecessor that it was hard to believe they came from the same recipe.

I don't know how I feel about the comped dessert.  On the whole, yes, definitely a plus.  On the other hand, the cashier said he noticed that the first cake was a failure and let it out of the kitchen anyway.  We were full by the time our third dessert came out, and I forced myself to go for a midnight jog after I let all the fat and sugar settle down.  I live in Alphabet City.  I could've been killed!

Okay, I know that was melodramatic.  And it was still nice of the cashier to give us a delicious oozing chocolate cake.  So 4 stars for Chikalicious, and I will be back for more chocolate, and to try those beautiful cupcakes too.

Their red velvet cupcakes are very goood; the smooth fluffy frosting literally melts in your mouth. $1.60 isn't too bad. They are a good size, as they're perfect for NOT sharing :)

The vanilla bean ice cream was alright, but not mesmerizing... how amazing can vanilla really get, though? The little chocolate ball and crispy ? toppings were good.

The brioche chilled bread pudding ($3.50) was pretty nice and creamy; if you love eggs and butter, this one will not disapoint. I'd like to try the warm vanilla custard bread pudding next time.

The Chickalicious dessert club is a much more laid back, chillax spot than the Chickalicious dessert bar across the street. I go into the dessert bar with different expectations as going into the dessert club, because at the bar I want that experience of watching my desserts crafted right in front of me... However, most of the time, I like to stuff my face with yummy goodies with as FEW people watching me (and listening to me) as possible. Also, the club has more traditional desserts/drinks than the bar, which is more contemporary and.. culinarily.. artistic and.. pricy.

Considering all the hype Chikalicious gets, I was expecting better. Though, I might give it another chance since it sounds like I missed out on some really tasty bread pudding.

We tried a variety of their cupcakes on the recommendation of Gramercy Tavern's "Best NY Cupcakes" List. The caramel was almost too caramelly, the s'more had an interesting flavor but odd texture and the frosting on the red velvet was oddly tangy as well. The frosting in general tasted kind of over-whipped.

Considering how many things we tried, I felt like there should have been more winners, but we at least enjoyed the chocolate chip cookie and the very chocolatey Triple Chocolate Cupcake. YUM. I would return to try the bread pudding and to grab another Triple Chocolate Cupcake. I guess you just have to know what to get.

I'm a sucker for baked goodies. I was determined to go here my last night in NY. When we arrived I loved the atmosphere. Tiny, packed, and with an aroma of sweet goodies. We ordered the creme brulee, banana cupcake, and a whole box of macarons for me to bring home. Everything was absolutely perfect. I would have given them 5 but I had a hard time ordering. Their menu was just a printed sheet of paper taped to the wall... But thats not a big deal! I'd still go back.

Look under my name. It says Washington, DC. So I'm more than bridge and tunnel--I'm like tunnel, bridge, bridge, and tunnel. Where I'm from, we just started our cupcake wars. So maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

But I love these cupcakes. The frosting is... it's just... "it's like eating beauty," said m. z., the one who brought me here. So light and fluffy! The cake, so moist!

I had to bring five cupcakes back with me. So I knew I hadn't imagined their overwhelming perfection. Only four made it to DC.

On the BoltBus back to the big sky and clean streets of DC, only one thing could cure the ennui: a triple chocolate cupcake. Chocolate cake, chocolate frosting, and--best of all--chocolate ganache. What struck me first was the absence of overpowering sweetness. Indeed, the chocolate was the star of that show.

Today, only three remain.

After our wonderful experience at ChikaLicious Dessert Bar, I just HAD to walk across the street and buy more dessert!  I mean, how often do I come to NYC?  Unfortunately there wasn't much selection since it was near closing, so I settled for a vanilla cupcake and mocha cupcake with chocolate filling.  I would definitely say the cupcakes here are a lot lighter and less sweet than your typical American cupcake.  And exactly what I would expect from a Japanese pastry chef!  The cake is light and moist and the frosting is not that sugary and super smooth.  This is the kind of cupcake that you can eat more than 1 and not feel weighed down by the heaviness of butter and sugar.  I kind of wish I tried more things, but I'll definitely come back next time I'm in NYC!

Um, these are by FAR the best cupcakes I have ever had. In. My. Life. I have tried everyone of them that I know they make and have never been dissapointed. Yes, I live in Atlanta. But I eat a lot of cupcakes. Those freaking cupcakes are so good I want to punch myself.

If the lines are too long across the street at the Chickalicious bar, then head here to pick up desserts to go. All sweets are so beautifully made. Was lucky to catch a summer special of green tea ice with ice cream and red beans.

The S'mores is queen of cupcakes.  The caramel was gorgeous but far too sweet.  I'm excited to try more, especially at the very reasonable price.

*Addendum for the leftover-loving: the cupcakes don't do well after two nights in the fridge.  I know, they're probably not meant to.  But in any case, they're not good cupcakes to buy in giant batches for savoring over the week.

Ordered the...(ranked in order of preference high to low)
Green Tea Deluxe
Bread Pudding
Red Velvet

They only sold bottled water, but the green tea deluxe snowlicious was a great refresher. The bread pudding was a lot simpler than what I expected with a piece of pound cake surrounded by chickalicious pudding. The red velvet was nothing to write home about - frosting mushy and very cream cheesy. Service could have been friendlier and faster, our snow was half melted by the time we got it.

Smores cupcake was good.
Red Velvet cupcake, okay.
Creme brulee, okay.

Nothing extraordinary, but the prices were reasonable.

You can't seriously think that I would go to ChikaLicious Dessert Bar and not follow the 3 course dessert with goodies from its fast-casual, take out store across the street. Because I so did.

The prices are great here. For $1.60 you can get a standard - red velvet, double chocolate, coconut, caramel, black & white. I can't remember the last time I found decent-sized cupcakes for less than $2.50. Even the premium, stuffed cupcakes like s'more and triple chocolate only go for $2.25. I had a bite of a s'more cupcakes and the cake was moist. For these prices, I'm coming back for more.

I split a frozen yogurt sundae. It was incredible. The soft serve reminds me of the vanilla frozen custard from The Dairy Godmother outside of Washington DC - my favorite frozen dairy spot in the world. The sundae had hot fudge and was dressed with pistachios, chocolate pieces and kataifi.

There is nothing at Dessert Club for more than $5. Artisan pudding cup? $3.50. Chocolate chip cookie? 3 for $1.50. White chocolate mousse puff with strawberry? $4.25. Smoothie? $3.95. Tiny Asian wolfing down all of these items in one sitting? Free.

It's a little embarrassing when the Chikalicious cashier greets you with, "Welcome back!" But I am willing to brave the embarrassment because these cupcakes are damn good. Especially the caramel ones with caramel centers. Mmm...

Sometimes when I'm in the mood for a "light" dessert, I look for Asian bakeries. They tend to make similar western items like cheesecake and cupcakes with a lighter hand in regards to butter or sugar. Or at least that's what I'd like to believe.

I got a chance to try Chikalicious's cupcakes at an event. I had the s'mores, which was an interesting combination of moist cake with a fluffy marshmallow topping that was slightly burnt, and had a dollop of chocolate in the center. I also tried the banana one, and was blown away by the unique taste of the creamy topping. It might be too dangerous for my waistline to come face to face with some of these cupcakes again. And at $1.60/ea, they're really a steal for the quality. I can't wait to try the other goodies here.
