11 reviews for d'espresso
Interesting place in the LES. I ran into it with a friend. The space is small, but not crammed. Besides the famous Caffe Danesi, they also have a refrigerated section with cold beverages and snacks. Cappuccino was very good, the presentation was very professional and the taste was rich. The pastry I chose was AMNESIA INDUCING - so unmemorable I would be lying if I told you I remember what I had.
So here is the question - why the mixed reviews? I can't believe that the people that gave it a two star were drinking the same coffee I did. Are there multiple baristas, ranging from good to awful? Probably.
I'll visit it again and get to the bottom of this.
The second stop on my coffee tour of the LES, and it can be graded on one of my simple rules: If you have the word "espresso" in your name, you better serve good espresso.
Falls pretty much short on that, and there's not a ton else it can rely on.
I am not a morning person.....so at 11am....I know thats not quite morning, I found myself sitting in this cafe enjoying a double espresso.
Does NYC need another coffee bar...hell no. But this place was nice enough that another cafe should be forced to close to keep the balance.
The place is impeccably clean and the two young girls working there were very friendly. My double espresso was quite good, and the coffee L had was delicious, possibly the best I have had in ages, even if she did put a little too much milk in it for my liking.
The small coffee frankly is a little too small, and prices are about on par with Starbucks, but this place did have some pretty good coffee, a welcoming atmosphere, and being right across from Stanton Social, its a great pre-brunch holdover.
I would definitely go back, and if i lived in the area probably frequent the place.
The espresso is very mild. I'm usually a pure cappu guy, but I felt the mild espresso did not hold up to the milk...my next visit I opted for a moca and was blown away. I suppose it is basically chocolate milk but still hit the spot this gloomy monday morning. btw the pastries are baked fresh each day...try the chocolate rugelach the big crescent shaped one...it looks sweet but its not to bad...the pan chocolate too...you could feed a small nation with the size of it.
I am sad to give this place a low rating. It looks and seems nice. Modern and simple. The low score is based on the excessive rudeness of the barista and the excessive foam in my latte. If you have to be snooty, please learn how to make coffee drinks.
A small stylish Italian cafe that gets the details right. My espresso was perfect and the small biscotti just right to chill out for a few minutes while watching the street scene outside. The have some truly outstanding desserts and the staff was very friend and very Italian. Definitely a nice finish to an afternoon in the LES.
The design gets 5 stars--love the black glossed floor and cool minimalist vibe. But the coffee? I've had better. I have gone twice now--figured the first average latte was just a one time deal--but the next was just the same. Mainly the coffee lacked in flavor. Equal to Starbucks. I still haven't found a place in the SOHO/NOLITA/LES area to beat Gimme Coffee. They are GOOD!
I was excited to see this place while walking around the LES yesterday. With the sleek modern look and the name brand Danesi Espresso being prominently displayed, it seemed like a place that would focus on the espresso (and get it right). That was totally not the case. I ordered my usual espresso macchiato and it was terrible. The coffee was weak--tasted very watery--and there was just a dry dollop of foam on top--no milk reached the espresso at all. Now, I will say that my one star is completely based on only one espresso that I have had there and nothing else but from the other reviews here I won't be running back to give D'espresso a second chance.
I don't know about the coffee, but I know the owner and he's really sleazy so I don't trust what he serves. I mean I'm sure he'd cut corners or misrepresent things. The food? Well he says it's baked there but I know that it's all made off-site - there's no oven on the property even.. Anyway, I'd say go to earthmatters around the corner. I don't drink coffee but I hear theirs is very good.
Last night, I needed a quiet place on the lower east side to meet a colleague and have a quiet conversation. I found d'espresso and decided to check it out. I'm so glad I did! The service was great, the atmosphere was perfect and the food and cappuccino were amazing! I was starving so I decided to get the pear and mango salad, which was delicious. There were some sandwiches there too, which I will probably try next time. I had a decaf cappuccino as well, which was super hot -the way it should be- and expertly made. They were also giving out free samples of cheesecake, and I really liked it. And I'm not really a fan of cheesecake. I chatted with the owner briefly and he told me that he actually orders certain pastry items from Israel and bakes them here! I thought that was pretty cool, so I took a rugala home with me and had it for breakfast. So good! I'll definitely go back and try the other menu items.
I like to hit this place on a Saturday morning before I trek out for a day of running chores all over the city. I always slurge on a large latte and try whichever pastry the gal behind the counter says is the best (she always has an opinion, and is generally right on the mark). Not necesarily "cozy" but not crowded either. Nice place to sit and have coffee & rolls and read the news.
