3 reviews for Desoto House Hotel
This is a beautiful old world hotel, with lots of old world charm
Came here for breakfast. The waitress was attentive, food good. Nice fall atmosphere.
Like the previous review, 4 stars is for Yelp. In the world of actual hotel stars, I would call this a 3.
It is labeled as a four star in Galena, IL in large part because there aren't many hotels to choose from. The beds could use an update and the room service could have better hours.
I actually live in Galena and own a bar across the street. When I was looking to move here, I stayed at the Desoto House hotel for a few nights -- and that was 5 years ago. Because of that, I will keep my review to what I deal with regularly and not as a guest at the hotel.
I often get the BLT wrap for take out. It rocks. And they can even stuff extra bacon in there if you want it. All praise the low carb Gods!
But a real missing treat in Galena is good breakfast. You won't have to look far if you realize that the court yard at the DeSoto House has the best food for the best price on Sundays for their brunch.
Don't sleep in too long! the brunch is over at 1pm.

I feel odd rating this four stars because there's no way this is actually a four-star hotel, but in the Yelp world... well, yeah. It boasts about being the oldest hotel in Illinois, but things have changed since it was built. They have a roof over the courtyard now, which somehow gives the whole place a feeling of being in the Alamo when you're inside [maybe it's the brick with white-washed walls?].
They also brag about their history wherever you look; each room is named after someone famous who stayed there [I think all of them stayed there?]. The rooms themselves aren't anything TOO special, but they're nice enough. Except for the light -- if your windows go into the courtyard, the light level is constant day or night; no amount of praying is going to get those curtains to block out the light.
The building houses a few different restaurants and shops; breakfast isn't included in the price, which is a bit of a disappointment, but you can walk down the street half a block in either direction to get diner or cafe breakfasts. Delightful.
The location is perfect, actually -- right downtown, on the second block of the Main Street strip -- and they have their own parking garage, a blessing in that three-hour-street-parking area.
