On a recent trip to Santana Row, my friend and I decided to go ring shopping so she could get acquainted with the styles she likes. I had heard great things about Derco, but almost didn't believe it because of its location amidst the high-end snobby retailers at SR. Jewelry Mart or not, one never knows.
But I was pleasantly surprised! We were greeted warmly, helped immediately and given superb service by Victoria. She really took the time to explain what Derco does, what kind of customization they could do, and was very honest about what she thought would work for my friend.
Even after an hour, after we had walked out ... we spotted the most beautiful ring in the window and marched right back in, only to have Victoria meet us by the window to grab the ring for my friend to test drive. Talk about top-notch! The rings are beautiful, the craftsmanship is excellent. They offer many tension settings as well, which is a unique style you won't see at Zales.
That said, I would definitely recommend Derco to friends.
I went here today looking for wedding rings. Like other yelpers before me, this place was highly recommended by a friend who's family has been shopping at the San Francisco location forever.
The salesperson was incredibly helpful. I asked about pricing differences between Derco locations in San Francisco and San Jose and he assured me that they use the same pricing scheme for all locations.
I was also very happy to know that they can design custom rings to look like designer rings at a fraction of the designer cost.
AMAZING... this place is great. My fiance bought my engagement ring there and he chose the perfect one with a beautiful stone. I must say that if he can go to a jewelry store and know exactly what I want without me having to go there or even second guess his choice, that they did something right.
Derco came highly recommended by two totally different people I knew, so I figured that this would be the place. After shopping around a bit, I found that Derco did have the right mix of great service, selection, and most importantly, nice jewelry that I was looking for. Ryan, who I think is the manager at this location, is a GREAT, laid-back guy who doesn't act like they're the only store in town. He spent a lot of time with me talking about what I wanted, even when it took me many visits to make up my mind. Compared to my experiences with snotty or otherwise unfriendly service elsewhere, Derco was a dream.
By the way, the Derco in the Jewelry Mart was overcrowded when I went, and it was just a huge hassle to go all the way up there during the middle of the day, get a guest pass, and find the store in the labyrinth. They now have another store in the new mall in SF where they have the new Bloomingdale's.
I hate shopping at Satan's Row, with all its traffic, parking problems, and snotty posh yuppies, but I put up with all that to shop at Derco.

So I actually bought my rings up at the SF Derco, but I'm closer to SR, so I go there for all the maintenance work etc.... but I have bought from this one as well.
Once you get past the odd intimidation thing of dowager-like people inspecting you when you walk in... the service is very good. Granted, I probably bring on more of this than I should by the fact that I usually cruise in there wearing sweats and a t-shirt, not the normal foo-crowd-foo for SR, but still.
Even though I have history with Derco... I always still baseline prices before buying anything... I hear that the SF place is cheaper, largely due to the higher overhead they prolly have to pay at SR due to location.
I love this store!! I had been searching for my engagment ring for six months. All I knew for sure was that I wanted a princess cut and something unqiue. hahaha, what bride doesn't want a unique ring?
Anyways, my now husband and I were having breakfast at Cocola and I was feeling antsy and told my husband I wanted to check out Derco. Now, he was afraid it would be too pricey but I went and took a look anyways. THERE WAS MY RING!!! Princess cut, channel diamonds and in platinum! I almost asked to have pave diamonds on the sides but that would have been too flashy for me. We also bought my husband's ring here. I think we got the brushed titanium or something. I wish I could remember the lady's name who helped us but she always remember us whenever we come in.
Before the engagement, my fiance and I went in to browse for engagement rings here. The staff greeted us when we walked in. We were surprised to see that they carried a wide selection of bands. I knew what style band I wanted and the lady was very helpful in showing them to us. After we found the band we liked, she offered to show us the diamonds....oohh they were pretty! She brought us various sizes and prices ranging from 1 to 1.5 carats. My fiance and I really enjoyed the process of trying them on because until it was on my finger, we wouldn't have known what size was too big or too small. I did get to try the band with a 1.5 carat diamond for $30K! That was the most expensive jewelry I got to have on my finger for a minute. =P
The saleslady gave us suggestions and opinions on what she thought looked good on my finger as well as which styles of wedding bands to pair with. She took down my ring size and all the info of the rings we were interested in. That was helpful for when my fiance returned. Out of all the jewelers we looked at, this was where we found the band we liked and definitely the service was excellent. So my fiance did come back and purchase my engagement ring here. They helped him to find the diamond he liked, which was brought in from their SF store. We will definitely be back to purchase the wedding bands.
My fiance purchased a pave setting for a princess cut diamond there and they set it for him. They did a great job. The ring is so beautiful.
I managed to knock my diamond loose from the setting so I called down to the Santana Row store. They said that it would take a week because they have to send it up to Derco S.F.... I asked if I could drive it up there? They said Yes. So I did. I dropped my ring off I was told 2 hours. I came back, picked up my ring and they said that they were able to tighten it but they would need to do more work to it and that it would take a week to fix and not to wait to long to bring it back. I asked if I could drop it off at the Santana Row store. They said yes.
So I went to drop off... The sales person said that she can not see anything wrong with the setting. I said I was told to have it sent back up to the S.F. store because they needed to redo the setting. She asked what is wrong with the setting... I have no idea the only thing they told me was that the diamond needed to be reset, you can call them and ask. Well it turns out that they don't keep records and they would have to have someone look at the ring again to determine what is wrong. Huge waste of time for both sides. So I leave my ring with them. They say it will be back in a week and ask to have someone call me to let me know what is wrong with it and if so is there a charge. Well it's been 7 days.. no one has called me. I call them... the lady tells me it's going to take 2 weeks. I asked why didn't someone call me to tell me this. I don't know if this person does not know English very well because she keeps repeating and never says sorry about the mix up or anything. So I called the Santana Row Store.... that was a waste, they are just going to have someone from the S.F. Store call me.
minus 1 star for not calling me/poor communication/bad phone skills
minus 1 star for not keeping records
minus 1 star for not sticking to the promise date
Get to keep 1 star for beautiful custom made pave setting and 1 star for
Both my engagement ring and diamond studs came from this store. I love that the prices are still low, even though the store isn't in the Jewelry Mart, and that it's an actual store with normal business hours. Anytime I'm shopping in Santana Row and I drop in the store, they always offer to clean my jewelry, and the salespeople are very friendly. We never felt any pressure from them and they didn't treat us badly because we were young. We will definitely go back to Derco to purchase our wedding rings.

I don't know about buying a ring at this particular Derco, but my husband bought mine at the the Jewelery Mart (wholesale prices) in SF. Believe me , there is a big difference in price. I do go to this location for cleaning and making sure the prongs are fine, which is all done FREE. If I choose to soder (sp?) my rings together, they will do that free as well. I would totally recommend buying your ring at Derco, but go to the Derco in SF Jewelry Mart/Gift Center for a better price. Santa Row is convenient for up keeping.

My initial experience at Derco Jewelers was a good one with a attentive salesperson and a good buying experience. It took us three visits to decide on our wedding bands and to actually place the order. Everything was perfect until I went to pick the rings up. The girl (a different salesperson) dropped my husband's ring, put a huge scratch in it and then dropped mine right after that. ON A GLASS SURFACE! Upon further inspection both rings had scratches on them which they assured us could be buffed out. I wanted all new rings but Derco refused to do anything about it and when I threatened to go to the BBB, they refunded us our money. I will never step foot in there again.
