This was one of the best restaurants that I have ever been to. Honestly not my style of folk who frequent the place but the food was out of this world. Polo playing, waspy doctor types hang out here. It makes sense since one bowl of soup cost $16.

If you have money to burn and really want to experience some fantastic flavors eat at this place.

After hearing about this restaurant 5 years ago I decided to try it with some friends this past weekend.  I will say that the quality of the food was good, tasty and unusual however the waitstaff was definitely lacking.  We had a oil wicked candle on our table that we were told could not be lit because they didn't have a match or lighter to use only a blow torch. Come on!!!!!!  Also the waiter had very little info to offer us about how the dishes were prepared.  Portions were small and prices were very hight for what is was.  Also the decor is needs serious attention paid.
For a wonderful meal in the area try Red Onion or Twist.

After all the reviews I read I was so excited to try this place out.  I made reservations ahead of time.  My boyfriend and I had decided to go climbing in the Gunks after a business trip in Boston.  The morning of the reservation (granted it was a sunday) I got a call that said they would not be opening up the upstairs because of limited reservations but I could eat downstairs with a limited menu.  Since I am from SF I decided that would be a great way to taste the dishes.  We were seated in the basement where most people were having pizza.  The waitresses are over worked and have hardly enough time for each table.  They don't have enough menus so you have to wait till someone else is done. I told the waitress my dilema and that I really wanted to try the food of the main dinning area.  She assured me that the chef that was staffed tonight is one of the main chefs that works upstairs.  We ordered from the limited menu to find out a few of the more popular items were not made this week. OK.... When the rest of the food came I was completely disappointed.  It was no better than Denny's and not very creative.  The sauce for the fish tasted like thousand island dressing.  The food was bland and not worth your while if you are a foody and very expensive for what you got.  If you want pizza this is the place.  The sushi is nothing spectacular from what we saw on the menu.  Better restaurants in New Paltz.  This was suppose to be a special night out and turned out to be horrible.

I can't believe that I'm the first Yelper to review this historical, 5 star restaurant. Sure, it's a drive from NYC, but it is in the glorious, food heaven that is The Hudson Valley. Make this your celebratory destination and you will find nothing quite compares.

The first thing you'll see is the beautifully restored stone canal house(circa 1797). Inside it is decorated with antique crafts of the region. The ambiance is pleasant, homey and romantic, while the service is polished.

Chef John Novi's dishes take creative spins on classics. His forte is combining flavors in inventive ways that marry well. Unlike many restaurants, nothing seems forced or unbalanced here. No wonder he is a recipient of the James Beard Award and received  5 stars from The New York Times (among others).

When I lived in NYC I came here every year for my birthday.  The attention to detail at the Depuy Canal House is what kept me coming back.  Stay at the Canal House or at the numerous historical B and Bs. (Bakers Bed and Breakfast is a gem).

Hiking in the Gorge nearby or stopping at Storm King Sculpture Garden will make it a memorable weekend get-away -- and give you an appetite for your feast at Depuy. It will be a transporting experience and one of your favorites for years to come.

Yes, The food was very good. Yes the ambiance is great. Overall, My opinion is that the canal house is VERY Overpriced. Probably caters to 60+ crowdwho maybe don't mind being ripped off. Sorry, But $45 for 4 small thinly sliced pieces of Tenderloin is Ridiculous. My sister owns a historical Resteraunt in Vermont very similar to the Depuy Canal house, And I just cannot justify why there prices are so Ridiculously high!
