The Depot Cafe is wonderful!  Once a month I go to the Depot Cafe on Sunday for breakfast.  The food is fresh and and well prepared.  My two favorite items are the corned beef hash and the eggs benedict.  I never tire of the food here.

Mary and her daughter are a delight and perfect hostesses. The historic atmosphere is wonderful.  I highly recommend the Depot Cafe.  It is a real gem in San Carlos.

The service was OK, but the food was disappointing and overpriced.

I ordered a belgian waffle (on special) and it was clearly just a regular frozen waffle.  Worse, the sausage links tasted slightly rancid and the coffee tasted metallic.  The bacon was not freshly cooked and hung off the edges of the plate, like another reviewer said.

The decorations covering the walls were interesting and fun, but the room was drafty and cold.

If you're looking for breakfast food in the area, you should know that Stacks is just down the street and you'll end up paying the same amount for something far better.

Decided to give this place a try on a rainy, sunday morning and was extremely disappointed. The place is charming with wall covered in pictures of trains and other old historical photos. The staff was very friendly and nice, but the food was just awful.

The coffee was watery and had no flavor. I ordered french toast with a side of one egg and bacon. The french toast was extremely dry and could have been used as a boomerang in a crocodile dundee movie. Then, I was served four long pieces of bacon on such a small plate, that the peices of bacon hung off the sides of the plate and rubbed against the table. EEK! The one thing was decent was the one egg scrambled.

I had to eat again shortly after at another place, because I could barely eat the meal.

Surprisingly, there were many customers at this place, so maybe I just ordered the wrong thing!

A-OK is a perfect description.  Corned beef hash is made in house.  There was something unusual about it--I couldn't quite figure it out.  Maybe they added milk to it or something, but there was something almost liquid in there that wasn't corned beef, potato, or onion.  It had a nice crunch from the griddle.  I loved the kitchy interior.  You're definitely in close quarters, though.  Oh--and DO NOT get the coffee.  It was stinky and reminded me of coffee made in old urns back in the day.  Ptooey.

Tiny little place with lots of personality! Super friendly staff that make you feel right at home. I love the history behind this building and all the train

Ok I have worked and lived in Redwood Shores previously for about 4 years and I actually never went into this place. I always thought it looked super shady. But after some of my friends wanted to come here for breakfast one morning I found ... it's not shady at all. It's actually quite charming inside. And the lady her runs it (I think her name is Maria) is the sweetest.  I think this is one of the oldest buildings in the area. There are pics of it when the Caltrain was just finished. It's got a ton of train decor as well. Sort of old fashioned but like I said, it's part of it's charm.

I remember getting the pancake sandwich, which well isn't a sandwich. Just some pancake (which were pretty decent) and some bacon (so so). Coffee though, Maria could see miles away that some cups might be looking a third empty and kept topping off. It was much appreciated as the coffee was hot and I was super tired :) I would come back for sure.

A well prepared breakfast and a place that knows what "sunny side up" means. Sausage links were delicious, pancakes were BIG, not as fluffy as I'd like, but OK. Coffee was weak.
Atmosphere is very nice, especially considering the location and history of the building where the cafe is located. TRAINS!!!
Sure, I would go back and next time I want to try the ommelette .

Down to my bones I know this is the best breakfast place around. I have been going to the Depot Cafe every Saturday for around 20 years now and I have never had a bad experience.

Let's talk about the decor. The decor is the epitome of home. You walk in and know that this place has been around forever and everyone knows about it (If you're a regular, you will always see someone in there you know). The walls are covered from floor to ceiling in paintings, pictures...etc of trains. There is a fireplace, and during winter the fire place makes this place feel warm and cozy. Just the place you want to have a warm coffee in-hand and relax a little bit.

Mary is the owner of the Depot Cafe and it is safe to say she is the kindest person to ever serve you. Her staff is very friendly and timely, always making sure your meal is enjoyable.

Let's talk food! The food is down right home-cooked-goodness. They have 30 something omelets, and I myself have not tried them all. You can also make your own if you do not see one you want. They have other breakfast items including pancakes, waffles, eggs, hash browns etc... and other meals. They do a great lunch too! There are plenty of burgers and sandwiches to anyone's liking. A little side note as to what I like about the BLT (you can also get a BLT with avocado too!) in particular, they give you a BLT that has plenty of bacon. How many times have you ordered a BLT and not had your bacon craving satisfied? Running with that, you will never have to worry about portion size here. I have always walked out the door with a nice full feeling.

The prices are very fair too! For a big breakfast meal you can easily pay under nine bucks. Same goes for lunch.

Overall, if you want to visit a local sit down restaurant that you know all the locals (including myself) call 'home' for a good meal, the Depot Café is your place.

I am struggling with giving this place only 2 stars because I know it is better than that, ok maybe I want to believe it is better than that.

Here is what's better......Sky Kitchen at the San Carlos Airport, same menu, MUCH better cooks!

We stopped by the Depot Cafe for a mid week breakfast.  It is a tiny hole in the wall, nothing wrong with that, tons of great food comes from holes in the wall.

The decor, well, if you are a train lover than you will love the walls that are covered from floor to ceiling with every conceivable picture of every train that ever was.

It's the kind of place that when you walk in you take a seat at whatever table you want to sit.  The menu reads like a ode to omelets.  There are over 30 combinations and of course the "make your own"

I have eaten here once before and it was your typical breakfast diner food, a 3 star place (again, Sky Kitchen ROCKS!)  But my visit here last week left everything to be desired.

It really came down to this.  Waitress - can you say HAG.  My God woman, get the broom outta your behind!  She was rude from beginning order to when I had to send my eggs back TWICE because the whites were runny after I ordered them cooked through, to when she questioned me the second time and wanted to look at them.  How about "the customer is always right"

She then asked for them back to put them back on the griddle after I had cut through them and the yolk was all over my plate.  Why wouldn't you just fire two new ones?

Now let's address the fry cook.  If you can't cook a simple egg you have no business working in a breakfast house.  TWO times I had to send it back?  Come on!

When I told the waitress that I was done and just going to pay she wanted to come dig through my uncooked egg as if I was lying.

I STILL tipped her, WTF is wrong with me?

    Food 1 star
    Service 0 stars

An edit.  After a horribly rude response from the owner, I give this place 1 star and will never go back again!

Built in 1888, this little piece of San Carlos history serves one damn good home style breakfast.  If you like omelette's and trains then this is definitely a cool little place to check out.

Sitting right inside San Carlos train station its the perfect hole in the wall for cal train commuters to grab a quick hearty breakfast before hoppin on the train to work.  Inside you'll find the walls covered in pictures of trains showing you a little bit of history of the Depot, and i do mean covered, as in frickin all over the place. I've never seen so many pictures. What i want to know, is how the hell do they paint the walls?  they probably haven't cleaned or dusted them in many many years either.   uhm....ew.

The food is nothing spectacular but it is good.  I had the pancake sandwich this time and it was very tasty. but honestly, how do you mess up pancakes ,eggs, and bacon? the only thing i didn't like was the ice cold maple syrup. to me there is nothing worse than pouring cold maple syrup on a hot breakfast. who does that? that's just plain stupid. makes no sense, kinda like Bush still in office, its just not right.

anyway, where was i?  oh yeah, the omelette's seem to be the favorite so i would stick with that. The service is usually great and the staff is very friendly. i would definitely get here early, like before 9am. otherwise you might have to wait a bit to get seated. the place is really small and doesn't hold to many people.  there is only a few reserved parking spots as well, so parking is very limited.  Other than that I like this place, and I'll definitely be coming back for the omelette's.  :)

It's rare that a greasy spoon gets 4 stars in my book.  It was the 4th of July and what's more American than a good old , hearty breakfast?  The Depot Cafe is small, but cozy. The walls are plastered with photos of old trains.  There's a fireplace and the room is filled with wooden tables and chairs.  Pleasant, casual atmosphere with quiet charm.

Service is sufficient and friendly, but a little rough around the edges.  It took a while for my water and I reminded her once or twice, but the food made up for it.

I ordered the avocado, tomato, bacon and cream cheese omelette.  It was a rich, amazing combination that I just couldn't stop eating.  The presentation of the omelette was nothing spectacular - a giant omelette, bulging with filling, no fancy garnishes.  What was different was it tasted a lot better than it looked.  The tomatoes were cooked (which is unusual) and had just the right acidic contrast to the cream cheese.  The touch of avocado gave it almost a Spanish flavor with the cream cheese acting like sour cream.  The salty bacon was the finishing touch.  I got your standard English muffin (by the way it's included in the cost of the omelette) and Tom got the homestyle potatoes, which he loved.  Their potatoes are slightly fried and crispy as opposed to oven-baked, giving it a nice texture.

I was thoroughly surprised at how delicious the omelette was.  Although the shell was dimpled and appeared overly cooked, it tasted like perfection.  I will definitely save my workout points to visit this place every now and again.

Who knew the Omelet House was the most powerful restaurant group in San Carlos? After going to the Sky kitchen and realizing the menu looked familiar sure enough they were owned by the same people at Omelet House. Guess what? Deja Vu all over again. Instead of the airplane theme over at SK, Depot Cafe has a train theme since it's inside the San Carlos train station.

Again I looked at the menu and I thought this looks damn familiar...
So  I asked and yes the third in the Omelet House triumvirate. So you can guess the food is just like the other two. I however didn't get breakfast this time and opted for a Reuben sandwich. Honestly the sandwich is ok but I do like their breakfast so I'd suggest sticking to that and you can't go wrong. Now if Omelet House would just get a car " theme, they'd have Planes, Trains, and Automobiles covered.

Don't go on a cold day.  The front door won't close.  Really, it is broken.  Throw in concrete floors, and this place is about as homey as a prison cell.  No, to be fair, the platform outside was probably less comfortable (it is located at the San Carlos train station).  Maybe it is more charming on a warmer day.

But I had the worst omelet of my life here.  The eggs were cooked in that oh so fast over curdled protein way most people do.  That I could live with.  But the mushrooms inside had barely been cooked and were actually weaping moisture onto my plate.  Any decent cook knows that you cook the moisture out of your ingredients before you put them in an omelet.  Yuck.

My hash browns had a nice crisp brown appearance to them.  But they were neither crisp nor warm.  It is what you would expect if they had been cooked an hour ago and inadequately reheated.

My kids enjoyed their pancakes, but it was so cold the syrup barely poured out of its container.  OK, it came out, but you could see sugar crystals from the cold.

    And it was no bargain.

Finally, the place is full of the geriatric set.  You can tell they are all regulars.  There must be something to it for them.  But as someone who misses Nini's (just moved from Burlingame to San Carlos), I can't imagine what it is.

My hubby and I went here today for a quick lunch. The server was great, polite and attentive. However, the food left much to be desired. I ordered the French Dip, hubby ordered the cheeseburger. Hubby liked his cheeseburger, but the slaw definatly needed some salt and pepper, it was way to sweet and tasted mostly of pineapple juice. My french dip was extremely disappointing, the meat was a packaged roastbeef that still tasted of plastic, it was a greyish brown and lifeless, the Au Jus had large chunks of scallions and white onion floating in a yellowish brown liquid that had a very pronounced chicken flavor with an abundance of salt. To finish off, I was sick for the rest of the day,I will not be returning to this cafe.

Cute little whole in the wall breakfast place built into the San Carlos Caltrian station. The walls are literally wallpapered in framed pictures of trains from all eras. The cover of each menu has a description of local history.
The food itself is basic diner fare such as omlets, eggs and sausage. Very satifying after a night out drinking.

This place is a kick!  Once you go in, you get that "Cheers" feeling where so many of the patrons appear to be regulars.  The food is fantastic!  You'll not get better pancakes anywhere and they have sugarless syrup to boot!
Go Saturday if you like homemade corned beef hash!  It is out of this world.  We've tried their eggs benedict on Sunday and it is very good as well.  I especially like their homestyle potatoes!  Located at the San Carlos train depot, the theme inside is trains.  I'm not up on trains but if you are, you'll see plenty of photos of old trains.  There is also a fireplace which they fire up in the winter to give the place a nice homey feeling.  I've been told their lunches are also very good.  I've only been there for breakfast, but I'll swing by for lunch one day.

De-lish-ous. Bring everyone you know, your boyfriend, your husband(not both), your sister, parents and I dare you to leave hungry.

Try the #26 crispy bacon scrambled. You may weep. Saturday corn beef hash is by and large the BEST thing I have ever tasted.

Breakfast items = SUPER DUPER good.
Lunch items: super good (grilled sandies & hamburgers are insanely good)
Service: super good and friendly(try to get Mary or one of her saucy daughters.)

** i am also a friend of the family owners, but also a very picky about food and service (see my other reviews). i believe if you don't like it, tell the waitress or change your seat - you are the customer and must use your voice.

Every now and then I need to come into work for an hour on an early Sunday morning and want some breakfast before I drive back home in the city.

I found Depot Cafe on Yelp and decided it was worth a try. The inside is kitschy and the walls are covered with pictures of trains.

They have a decent menu with all the standard diner fare

I looked over the menu and decided I should get an omelet.  I ended up ordering the mushroom and jack cheese omelet which included hash browns. My omelette was cooked to perfection and was quite tasty. My only gripe is that toast isn't included with breakfast and costs extra so I skipped it.

The service was friendly and prices were reasonable - I'll definately go back!

Definitely a good place to have a slow morning breakfast and catch up with the family after being away at school for a while. Stopped in this morning for breakfast and I was impressed, I haven't been here since I was a little kid (and honestly only know I stopped in because my mom told me I did). The food is simple and exactly what you would expect from a small diner at a train station. The service is excellent, and the atmosphere is very enjoyable, and is definitely something you wouldn't find anywhere else.

My only complaint is the hash-browns/country potatoes that came with my omelet were very plain, and a bit dry. Other than that the meal was good.

We came in around 10am on a Saturday and the place was packed. We didn't have to wait in line, but they didn't get a chance to clean the table before seating us. The lunch/breakfast menu is nothing fancy, traditional home-made meal with very reasonable price. The restaurant is small, and they fit as many tables as they can. It felt like eating at a military base; the tables in the middle of the room are all lined-up in order, very little space between. The seats around the walls are a lot nicer and more leg room.

Parking-wise, look for spots that are marked with "reversed for depot caf". There aren't that many. Otherwise, you can always spend $2.00 and park for the entire day.

As much as I like all the pictures of trains and engines inside the restaurant, I wouldn't come in with a group of more than 2. But I can imagine myself getting off the caltrain, grab some food here, sit outside on the curbs and enjoy the meal with the view of downtown San Carlos.

So, 5 stars obviously means different things in different reviews; the context is important.

In this case, it means "Exactly what you're looking for in a casual breakfast/lunch diner". A review I once read from a fellow Yelper (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) set out her criteria for a breakfast experience: 1) Keep the coffee full, 2) Better or different than you could/would do at home and 3) Service.

Depot Cafe gets all three right. The energetic waitress bustles between cozy but not jam-packed tables keeping your cup full and any needs supplied. They've got a full page a omelets (and a "make your own" option if nothing in there suites your fancy), a number of daily specials, and all the usual pancakes and waffles. Their hot chocolate deserves special mention, as the whipped cream swirl towers to double the height of the cup itself.

Most plates are $6-$9 and plenty of food, so two can eat well and be out the door (tax, tip, coffee) for $25.

Finally, this place has some great history and really commits to the train theme, so it's the perfect place to take your grandma when she's in town (it was for mine ;).

I have been coming to the Depot since I was in the 3rd or 4th grade.....The Depot has a cozy feel and is a great place for breakfast or lunch....My son loves all the trains inside and whenever we are there Mary will always bring out some trains for my son to play with..

My personal favorites are the grilled chicken sandwich with potato salad (mmmm potato salad), hamburger, or the french toast...Husband likes the "You can Do it" omelet with potatoes..

Parking is never a problem.  There are some reserved spots near the street side of the parking lot.  There are also some spots to park where you have to pay due to the Caltrain station.  I have parked there a million times and never paid.  So take that Caltrain! ha ha

Be kind to the staff and leave them large tips!

This place is pretty good! The service is fast, the food is fresh, the staff are all super polite! It's a tiny place, not good for large groups, but small groups of 4-6 are probably okay (I would probably also avoid it on Sunday mornings, and while I don't know, I could theorize there would be quite a wait time). I always get breakfast foods when I eat here (because I love, love, love breakfast!) but they have some sandwiches and lunch-type offerings too. The ambiance is super and it has a very cozy, down home feel.

The one thing I found annoying (and sort of confusing) that was since it's in the CalTrain lot I guess you need to buy a daily parking permit. Maybe you don't, but there are no spots marked "for Depot Cafe" that promise you protection from parking tickets and I'm always too paranoid to risk it and not by a ticket. So, consequently, I don't come here very often because I don't like to pay to park and I'm too lazy to park and walk across the street (if I'm parking across the street I might as well eat at one of the many tasty places to be found on that side of El Camino).

Omlette House up the street is a couple dollars cheaper, has better parking, and similar food, but can't match the country kitchen atmosphere found at Depot. Just imagine a country kitchen of a train enthusiast ;-)

So I'm sure you've read about how this place is owned by the same family as The Omelette House and the one by the airport already...  I'll spare you those details.

However, I ordered the exact same omelette, which was even prepared the same way!  All fluffy and everything, probably created with an omelette cooker.  No problem for me, since I'm the eater of the dish!

I live nearby all of these places, and can still eat the same dish at 'em!  All lovers of omelettes must go here.  Ultimate benefit is for CalTrain travelers.  Otherwise, it just depends on what you're in the mood for: a crowded El Camino restaurant, or train traffic.

Still, very tasty and very friendly.

You were there decades ago when the much younger version of yours truly asked, no, demanded, that any visit to his grandparents included a trip on Caltrain. We always left out of the San Carlos station, and I remember we occasionally got a bite at the Depot Cafe. You helped  create some very cherished memories with the gparents.

Years later, a much older version of yours truly no longer has a car, and Caltrain is the vehicle of choice for visits with the gparents. That you are still there serving up diner-style eats, is impressive. Five stars for longevity and the memories you are no doubt still helping create.

More like 2.5...It was alright. Just alright. Nothing more nothing less. I had the breakfast plate with ham and eggs. Walking in it was self seating and while we got our food and orders taken relatively quickly I didn't love it. My potatoes weren't crispy or greasy (I love either when it comes to little breakfast joints), the eggs were blah, and the ham, well, it was cooked. I guess that's good? I may try it again for lunch because I'm awesome like that but for sure not for breakfast. Oh, and watch out for all the bird shit in the front of the building.

I can't believe there's a real diner in this train station. It makes me so happy!

It has decent omelettes, decent coffee, good service, and a cosy atmosphere full of kitschy old train art.

The hash browns could have been a lot better, but mostly I was happy with the plain, tasty food.

The outfits of the older crowd were worth the trip in itself. I'm talking serious fluorescent polyester pantsuits and like, those fur neck things, at 9am on a Tuesday morning. Holy wow.

We recently traveled to the Bay Area, beginning our journey with a visit to San Mateo. Our first morning, to sustain ourselves, we checked with Yelp to find a good breakfast joint and discovered The Depot. Since there were so many positive reviews, we decided we couldn't go wrong---and we didn't. This genuine one-time train depot, is a cozy nod to the past when California was considered the new Promised Land and pilgrims piled from trains into stations just like the Depot.

I will stop waxing nostalgic and tell you that the Depot offers a very satisfying breakfast (we had the spinach omelet) and the best cuppa coffee I've had in recent memory. We loved the Depot.

I've heard about this place for years and finally had a chance to try it with my wife on Valentine's day.

The place is quaint and has personality with all the photos of trains covering the walls.

The staff is nice and attentive.

My wife had the corn hash and I had just a traditional sausage and eggs breakfast. Apparantly, the hash my wife ordered was the last serving as they took down the sign right after we ordered.

Her serving was pretty sparse but that could be because it was the last of the special. Mine was OK. Not terribly flavorful.

Still, most enjoy themselves here so give them a try.

Was looking for a good breakfast place on a saturday morning and came across the Depot Cafe on yelp. The place definitely has that intimate, cozy feeling and the inside of the cafe was filled was pictures of all kinds of trains. I loved trains when I was a kid and this place brought me back.

The omelletes were very tasty and the service was decent but very friendly. Pancakes were also very fluffy :) Would go back to again.

Depot Cafe gave a decent Diner experience.    The $7-$8 omelets are well made (and include toast) - the Orange Juice at $3.50 is a little pricey, but really is fresh squeezed.  Coffee was reasonable, and I didn't have to ask for a refill.   And, they provide a little takeaway container for our omelet.    Four stars based on basic competency and a cozy little environment.  Originally I had scored Depot Cafe lower because the hours on Yelp were incorrect and the wait staff didn't think that would be updated- so our breakfast was rushed, but the Owner actually reached out to me directly after my review, and updated the hours on the Yelp Page.   You have to love that personal attention.

Net - You'll probably be happy grabbing breakfast here, I know I'm coming back!

We dont come here anymore for breakfast because I finally noticed that my bacon had hair and lint all over it.  They told me it was because they dry the grease off of it with a towel?? LOL come on. That's disgusting.

This is one of those secret places that you hope not too many people know about.  We love, love the house made corned beef hash - cut up corned beef and potatoes with a little creaminess in there somehow, but alas they only make it on Saturdays and if you're lucky, they may have a few portions early on Sunday.  Mary, the owner alway remembers us (we don't go that often).  Otherwise, breakfast is great, lunch is nothing fancy, but you get great homey ambiance - tooting train clock, train art, train photos and all.

Small town charm, kind service and tasty food that hits the spot on a Sunday morning - that's what you will always get at the Depot. The owner - Mary - will greet you with a warm welcome and ensure your food is just as you want it during your visit at a trusted "local breakfast hole-in-the wall" that my family and I have LOVED going to every other week for the past 10 years. If you want fancy or something more polished v. homey I am sure there is a chain restaurant that you can support nearby - leaving more room for local die-hard fans.

The Caltrain station is apparently a fun spot for a morning meal! This tiny, rustic shack definitely has a cozy and homey feel to it. The old pictures on the walls and the waitresses with their puffy 50's haidos definitely take you to a different era. On Saturdays, you can get yummy homemade corned beef hash! The traditional breakfast (2 eggs any style, toasts, bacon or sausage and homefries) is delish and a good deal too.
