I recently spent 3 days at the Marriott Denver West on a business trip, and found the stay to slightly less than my expectations of this level of hotel. A brief summary of what I liked and disliked:

Liked:
- The rooms on the first floor, like mine, have a walkout porch, which had two chairs per room. It overlooked a grassy area in the back, and was by the pool. A nice touch.
- My room was quiet, considering the hotel is near the freeway. It seemed to be well insulated from sounds from the windows and hallway.
- The health club was well equipped, and I appreciated the basket of fruits that were provided.
- In the lobby there is an internet terminal and printer, which can be used to update flight reservations and check-in for the flight and print out boarding passes. However, I am not sure if it is free.

Disliked:
- The room condition was below standard. The bathroom tile and fittings seemed very dated - both in age and style. Some of the fittings were loose. The curtains were threadbare, and some carpet patches were worn. The bed headboard was scratched up. This was, of course, the state of my room only, and may not be the case for all rooms.
- High-speed internet connections in the room, which were wired, not wireless, was an extra $10 per day. For a hotel to cater to business guests in particular, one would expect complimentary internet access, but even if there is a charge, $10/day seemed high to me. Also, wireless access would be appreciated.
- Small sundry items could be purchased from the gift shop in the lobby, which is convenient, but even standard toiletries were for sale. While most hotels will provide things like toothpaste and pain medication, we had to purchase these from the shop.
- The restaurants at the hotel were limited and expensive. There is only one restaurant open for breakfast, and another one that is only open for lunch and dinner, so there are no options. Also the restaurant seemed expensive to me: $25+ for an standard entrée; $7 for a house side salad.

There are reasons to recommend this hotel, but there are areas that need improvement, which makes for a mixed bag overall.

The hotel, the beds and for the most part, the staff were great.  Um, the beds were next level heavenly.  The service in the restaurant/bar was veeeerrrrryyyyy slow.  Painfully slow.  Admittedly, this was a hectic weekend for the hotel given the influx of chaos surrounding the "late night carnivale", so I think they did pretty good.  There was a very, very creepy guy monitoring the hot tub, he really didn't need to stare at my friend in such a lecherous manner, that guy lost one star.  The other star was for the pokey service in the restaurant/bar.  A plus is the complimentary shuttle, they'll drive you to any of the nearby businesses like Target or Whole Foods, etc.  Big ups to Mark who kindly drove us for several errands.  Overall, it's newly renovated, very clean and the staff is very accommodating.

While in Golden for business, I had a fantastic 2 night stay at the Denver Marriott West. Even though it's part of the Marriott chain, the staff makes you feel like I was staying in a much smaller boutique hotel.

My room was fine - standard sized tub, not a lot of wasted space, regular perks (ie no flatscreen TV), and it did have a small balcony. For the room itself, it wasn't cheap - my company paid over $200 a night for me to stay here. I have paid less for much bigger rooms in more expensive cities like Vegas and San Jose.

We did pay a little extra to stay on the 6th floor and thus have easy access to the concierge lobby. In this lobby they serve a light breakfast, appetizers from 5 until 8 PM, and then desserts. The food was decent but you can't make a meal out of it - not sure I'd pay extra for it again.

The hotel itself has a Starbucks in the lobby area as well as two restaurants. One open for breakfast and another (Sports-bar themed with lots of TVs) open pretty much all day long.

Every time I called down to the front desk for something they asked me by name what they could do for me. It's a nice touch and makes you feel like you have your own personal butler when you don't have to give any staff member your name or room number.

My room service orders were delivered extremely fast and the delivery staff was top notch. I'm from the Bay Area, so when my wife and I get away for the night and stay at a hotel in San Francisco, we're used to ultra expensive room service. The Denver Marriott West was a pleasant surprise in the price department. The portions were huge and the prices were very reasonable - I think the most expensive thing on the menu was a $30 rib eye steak. Burgers and sandwiches were about $10 delivered - again very reasonable.

The king bed was very comfortable and there must have been 8 or 9 pillows of various density and fluff in the room. Saved me the effort of having to call down to the front desk looking for the "just right" pillow. My room also had an alarm clock with an iPod dock built into it - which was great for charging my iPod because I left the cable at home.

Note that there is no smoking in any room of this hotel or on any of the balconies, but I did see several people smoking directly in front of the hotel and in the parking lot. I applaud Marriott's effort to make their hotel smoke free, but having small crowds of people smoking directly outside the hotel entrance gave a bit of an "outside a bar in California" initial impression.

Location was very convenient, with Route 70 only a few blocks away. About half a mile away is a large retail plaza complex with several restaurants, a movie theater, and other shops.

I would definitely stay here again!

I don't know if all Marriotts are this nice, but this one had an amazingly comfortable bed-- felt like a foam mattress, with a duvet cover-- nice touch.  Also, upgraded toiletries from Bed Bath & Beyond.

The hotel is well decorated inside.  The pool isn't much to speak of (although there is an outdoor one open in the summer), but for a one night stay or a business trip I'd recommend it.

Whenever I'm traveling for business, there are a few key things I look for in a hotel:

1.  Nice gym
2.  Proximity to a coffee shop
3.  Comfy beds
4.  Quality shampoo and conditioner
5.  Toilet paper

The fact I had to put point number '5' down as a nice to have for this hotel knocks it down from 4 to 3 stars.  I thought toilet paper came standard with a hotel room??  2 hours and 1 call later - I got a roll...
