Normally a Denny's is a Denny's, but this place is really nice. After being stuck on the road with a confused and angry toddler, its good to be treated like a human being and not just a customer.
The people here were nice to her, nice to me, and nice to my wife. It wasn't overly busy, but it wasn't empty or creepy either. We got a great deal of attention from our waitress and the baby got to keep the desert menu.
I was especially impressed when the waitresses put down the plates out of reach of the toddler instead of right where she could grab it and put her hands within my food as so many other places seem to do. They took the time to know better and they cared. That means a lot to a father who cant remember the last restaurant meal he had that didn't have "baby hands" as the final added ingredient.

"Wait, I'm not taking this out. You have to cook this more."
    "What? Why?"
"Well ... just look at it!"
"It's fine! See, it's because [unintelligible explanation]"
"Oh ok. I guess so. You're right."

This is a conversation we overheard from the kitchen while eating our dinner at Denny's. "Overheard" might be a poor word choice, as the manager/cook and the waitress were talking loudly enough for the entire restaurant to eavesdrop.

And if that exchange isn't enough to make you redirect your Yelp search to another rest stop ... there's more.

My boyfriend ordered a soup as an appetizer, and a sizzling fajita plate for his dinner. I ordered a chicken sandwich with hash browns. The staff completely dropped the ball on the soup, bringing it over (along with a weak apology) only 5 minutes before we got our meals. Sitting across from the kitchen, we could clearly see my boyfriend's "sizzling" plate sitting under the lamps long before we got the soup. Thankfully, the food was good - albeit lacking its advertised sizzle.

After our meal, we decided we needed a sugar boost for the remaining leg of our journey and ordered a strawberry milkshake & a coke float to go. We heard the waitress relay the order to the kitchen (again, everyone can hear what goes on in there), but somehow the manager/cook made the wrong flavor shake & put both in tall glasses instead of travel cups. After a brief argument between the waitress & the manager/cook, they were remade & brought to us.

All in all, we spent about 90 minutes at Denny's. You would think that a diner at a rest stop would be accustomed to serving travelers. People who are trying to get from one place to another in a timely manner, with a destination in mind. If you spend over an hour at a rest stop, it should be because you're tired ... not because you're still waiting for your food! And between that and the soup/entree debacle, it was evident that this Denny's has extremely poor time management skills.

But if that STILL isn't enough to persuade you to change your mind about stopping here ...

What's the most important component of a rest stop? That's right: the bathroom. The women's bathroom was icky. Two messy stalls, with toilet paper scraps on the floor & a wet sink (what you'd expect to see at a bar bathroom, honestly). My boyfriend told me that although the men's bathroom was cleaner, while he was using the urinal a female staffer popped her head in - without knocking - to change the garbage bags.

    NO THANK YOU.

Next time, IF i ever have to stop for food and gas way out that way, we'll go to Pea Soup Andersen's. Should've known by the dead fly in the window that this might not go well. Also, as we were being seated, the table next to us called over the woman who seated us to take their order. They had been waiting awhile with no service. I guess we were lucky to be next to them so that we could get served.
Ordered the new strawberry pancake puppies and a Superbird with turkey bacon and no tomato. Hubs ordered a Mac and cheese patty melt. The waitress was a bit flustered from the other table, she seemed to be rushing and not really listening. The hubs joked that there was no way I would get my sandwich as ordered but to my surprise, it was right! But not the rest of the meal...
Pancake puppies were not newly fried and were actually soggy. Water tasted funny, so I asked for lemon; got back 1 slice that was 1/2 mushy on one side.
I think I should get a medal for keeping calm and carrying on with my meal, instead of complaining about everything. After all, it was in the middle of nowhere and who knows what scary things they have in store for complainers out there!

Santa Nella seems to be a natural stopover driving between the S.F. Bay Area and L.A. as it's approximately 2-2.5 hrs. into the drive (beginning from the Bay Area).  Denny's is one of several restaurant choices on this major stopover off I-5.  Food was Denny's OK as the previous reviewers have said.  On this morning, food seemed to take forever, as I made several trips back out to my car only to return to see that the food still hadn't come.  This, despite what appeared to be an overstaffed serving crew.  (Waitress was pleasant enough, just maybe not enough cooks).  Wouldn't necessarily be inclined to stop by again if ever in the area based upon this experience.

It's a Denny's so the food was... Denny's. Ok food.
Definitely a stop on the highway that beats Jack in the Box and the likes but would certainly not go back if I was not driving by.

Still I wanted to give my special thanks to the ladies working there who are very nice, friendly and helpful. A bowl of fresh air in customer service after the shitty attitude found in most establishments during my short stay in LA.

Had really good service and there was plenty of seating. Went at around 9pm less than a week ago for a late dinner on my way back to The City. There were a lot of menu items to choose from, especially from the new $2, $4, $6, $8 value menu. I decided not to opt for those since nothing appealed to my particular tastes. I decided on the country-fried steak. Came with dinner buns with butter, and my choices of cole slaw and onion rings. It took a while for all the food to come out at once but the dinner buns kept the family busy for a bit.

The country fried steak was alright, needed a bit more sauce. The cole slaw needs improvement since the whole platelet (petri dish sized) seemed like watered down lettuce. The onion rings were tasty but the onions were falling apart after the first bite into each ring. Nevertheless, the food left my stomach fulfilled with the help of the rest of the table feeding me some of their Santa Fe Skillet, which was also pretty good.

Restrooms are clean but may be hard to find since I didn't see any signage. Good thing the table was right by the restroom door so I didn't have to scout the whole establishment.

Stopped by on my way up to SF. it was around 8 or 9pm. It was moderately busy. Got seated and had the WEIRDEST waitress. I don't expect much from Denny's to start with. It's pretty standard everywhere you go. Greasy, unhealthy, short-order type of food. I just want to order, eat, pay and leave.

Our waitress attempted to have a conversation with us, but then cracked jokes that were kind of rude and well...at this point of my drive, i was like, whatever. Just bring me my food. Hold the saliva.

As we ate she seated another couple of guys and i overheard her say "okay, so take your time, i'm just going to stand here so it looks like i'm taking your oder...." WTF? The guys looked perturbed (spelling?)... In any case, the food was just meh, but "meh" is my expectation at Denny's. Paid, left and got the hey-hey outta Gustine. Probably won't stop by again.

Wow, I can't believe I am yelping on Denny's but I must!  Denny's has always been a dependable consistent restaurant.  A group of 11 of us arrived to Denny's Santa Nella on Monday night as a stop for dinner before making the drive back home to the OC.  Unfortunately the waitresses did not want to wait on us as soon as we walked in.  We waited about 10 minutes before being sat in an almost empty restaurant with 2 waitresses.  We were then greeted with "If you want to eat here its gonna be a while, as the manager is cooking while the cook is on break."  We didn't think that was a big deal as we felt sitting down for dinner would be worth the wait.  However after another 10 minutes of not being acknowledged, not even for a drink order we got the picture.  We got up and left while both the waitress' looked at us and gave us the biggest smiles we had seen the whole time we were there.  I suppose working at Denny's may not require the most experience food servers but we did expect some level of customer service and friendliness.

3 a.m. on Christmas morning is a terrible time to look for a cup of coffee or a rest room on I-5, particularly if you are a woman.   This Denny's was open and genuinely welcoming.

I walked in and dashed past the friendly waiter/welcomer to the ladies' room.  A few minutes later, I emerged in a condition for polite conversation.  The gentleman (all of 21, by the look of him) smiled, welcomed me as if I had not barreled past him looking for the loo, seated me ("Booth or table?") in the nearly deserted restaurant.

Coffee took a moment, because he said what was in the pot was "old" and he brewed fresh for me.  The eggs were exactly as ordered, the coffee was unremarkable, exactly what I wanted -- no gourmet delights, just some tasty caffeine and protein to wake me up so I could make the last part of my trip north without falling asleep.

Grateful, warm, and ready to face the road, I returned to my car and headed up I-5.

On this stretch of I-5, Pea Soup Andersen's is my usual stop for food. So the last time I was here and hungry, I learned first-hand that they're not open 24/7. That left me with this Denny's down the road. Unlike most Denny's after 2 a.m., this one was nearly deserted. I didn't take that as a bad omen. After all, you know what you're in for when you eat at Denny's, and I wanted to get back on the road quickly.

If I was in charge of central casting, I'd make sure that all waitresses at diners were of the pleasingly plump variety. When I'm sitting in front of a plate of greasy food, I don't want to be judged. A happy, chubby waitress helps. Continuing with the diner aesthetic, I want the short order cook to (a) look like he could kick my ass, and (b) have a mustache. Can't say why, but it just seems right. This Denny's scores on both counts, plus because I was sitting at the counter and the heat lamp was partially in the way, I could never actually see the cook's eyes, sort of like the mariachi in Desperado.

The food was better than I thought it would be. My Mega French Toast Slam was on special. The French toast was sweet and not undercooked. The sausage was nothing special, and the bacon was so thin it appeared to be shaved rather than cut, but the hash browns were crispy (and the waitress asked if I wanted them crispy, which is a sign of a great diner waitress).

Given the time and the location, I couldn't have asked for more.

Just a stop on the way to Vegas, for some breakfast. I like going to places like this, kinda out in the middle of no where. The food and service was better than most Denny's in the bay area. I had a good bacon and eggs breakfast. Average and no wait or lines. Good place to stop and get a bite on the way to better places.

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. Some friends and I stopped by here on a road trip and received the worst service I have experienced in my life. We asked for some omissions on our orders, nothing fancy, and the server got every single request wrong. And it took about 45 minutes for us to get our food. We thought we could go here for something fast! It really doesn't take 45 minutes for a grilled cheese sandwich...
