So I moved from the glorious, diverse Mission District -- home to Esperpento, We Be Sushi, Lucca deli and so many other neighborhood faves -- to Fremont.
Of course, that means my new favorite restaurant isn't Panchitas or Cha Cha Cha but -- Denny's.
It helps that the place is two blocks from where I live now, but beyond convenience, what turned a ludicrously suburban eatery into a revelation for me was the sandwiches.
Like so many, I once associated Denny's with breakfast and was pretty consistently disappointed with the food. But I had never really considered the Philly melt or the bacon cheeseburger, dripping with delectable oily juices and hitting the spot just right.
You can't help but eat lousy here, the Americana chow is just too indulgent to avoid. And unfortunately, it outdoes most other places I've tried in town, excepting De Afghanan, Cafe Buona Sera and some other sweet but rare finds.
Don't feel guilty. Just do it, Denny's style. It's cheap. It's easy. Only thing is, I could have sworn long ago that they served beer here ... oh, well.
The not-so-secret secret to being a decent server: Just communicate with your tables.
In this case, I wish our server would have immediately told us: "Hello. I'm not going to be serving you tonight. At all. So you might as well take your business somewhere else because I'm perfectly happy just making min. wage, without tips."
But this happened instead...
After a party that went into the wee hours of the night (or morning), our car full of people were tired and very hungry. Since I don't live in Fremont, I couldn't really suggest anything, and we passed this Denny's--one thing we all knew would be open--made a U-turn at the next light, and went inside around 3am.
We were seated pretty promptly, within 5 or so minutes.
Then we sat....and sat...and sat....for a good 20 minutes before being asked for drink or food orders.
Then the drinks come out, and one is missing. It was never recovered.
Food comes out, we ask for A-1 and a side of ranch, which also never appear.
The waiter also never comes back. EVER. Not for refills, not to check on us, not even to bring us the bill. I have a theory about this: that the waiter is on a constant no-tipping cycle. Gives decent service, receives a mediocre tip, then as service gets worse, tips decline, until the server just doesn't give a damn anymore.
I understand that it's 3am, but if a restaurant is OPEN, then service should at least be available, since I am not allowed to go into the kitchen to get my own condiments/drinks/etc. No one helped us.
We finally all got up to ask to pay for our meals at the register. The man (who I will assume was a manager of some sort) was very receptive when I voiced our complaints-- he apologized and said that they've been having problems with our particular server. Hmm...maybe time to fire this person???
So one star for the guy who allowed us to pay for our food and leave.

I'm writing a review for Denny's?? yup! Usually I probably wouldn't, but this Denny's location is good in my book. Last night, I came here and it was full around 11PM with a wait. I personally prefer this Denny's location to the other ones in the Fremont area. I remember coming here really late in the night (or early in the morning) with friends all throughout high school on the weekends. Since then, they have remodeled the location (just like most Denny's are). This Denny's is better than the other ones because of the service. Although it was really busy, the manager, host, and server were all very nice and we didn't have to wait for our food for any ridiculous amount of time. Many other Denny's locations are slow and the service is terrible, but not here. I had a good experience here, nothing beats some eggs , hashbrowns, and toast for your midnight cravings

This is where exquisite American Cuisine reaches its pinnacle! Wow.
Did I say that ? Is it April 1st yet ?
Like a lot of similar joints, the menu here is more of a visual delight with the all-out-attack on the optical nerves. The food is mostly bread in some form or the other, and some dead animals on the table, well done to boot.
Hey, I should not be complaining I guess. The place is clean, well-lit, has a parking lot (really, how much of this country has now been converted into fast-food parking lots ?), and the people are friendly. What more can I ask ? Good food of course, but no one around seems to care. I must be missing something!
At 10:45PM, there weren't many options. Next time, I am going hungry!
Denny's has become one of the best 24 hours restaurants here in bay area to me. Usually I like Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi restaurants and anything else was not good enough to get a 4 stars mark from me. Of course except Denny's. Their food is so good, fresh and they have lot of varities. Their environment and service is just wonderful. I specially like this branch of Denny's because they are big and its close to me house. I still can't decide whether Dinner in Denny's is best or Breakfast. Their only downside (due to all the good staffs around), is the comparatively higher price for the stake that I eat. But as I dont go there every week, I am fine with them.
