Wow------it's been a good 20-something years since I've been here.  And I'm so thankful for the previous reviewers' reminders about Service Merchandise, Zayre (wasn't it Zares or Zales or something?), Ames and Osco.  Serice Merchandise was AWESOME for picking out toys that you knew "Santa' was never going to bring you.  Some kind of metallic ambiance in that store made it look surreal and space aged.  My older sister and I used to pick out new school clothes at Ames.  And years later, I had my very first job at Friendly's, which I hear is also now gone.
After mom did some grocery shopping, my dad and I used to walk through the marshy swamp lot which is now BJ's and Salvation Army.  And other times we'd walk over by the Willow Tree Restaurant (my second job ever, and now also closed) and we would climb up this huge sand pile from a lumber company (or something) in the area.  So much fun!

Demoulas/Market Basket used to have the best no frills ice cream---Chocolate Macadamia Nut Crunch!

Awwww...the sawdust (Thanks David!)  Oh yes, the Sawdust piles IN the aisles of Demoulas!  You can't get entertainment like that anymore!

I don't ask for a lot from a grocery store: cleanliness, a bug free produce section, meat that isn't visibly rotting  IN THE MEAT CASE.... those are my base elements of grocery store critique. Unfortunately for DeMoulas, they failed each of those tests.

Their beer and wine selection was mediocre at best which is also a description I'd give to the selections available across a myriad of other store items. The isles were narrow. The carts were ancient and filthy. The only reason I can see the store was jammed packed: the prices are really low on a lot of goods.

I brought my own cloth grocery bags and the grocery bagger looked at me like I was from another planet and apologized for not knowing how to pack the bags.

I won't shop here again. I'll pay a higher price to shop at a store where I feel confident in purchasing items other than paper goods.

This store is where I do my 'meat and potatoes' shopping. Almost everything here is cheaper than at Shaw's, and you have to love the way the store looks like it hasn't been remodeled since the Nixon Administration.

The only depressing part is that the rest of the plaza has a lot of vacant stores that have sat empty for over a decade, making it feel like a ghost town. But, I understand they are planning to demolish and rebuild the entire store. (I think Friendly's is getting kicked out, too, but I am sure they'll find a new home.)

But as long as they keep the same coin-op horsey ride out front, I'll continue to shop there.

(Edit) Almost forgot-a few years ago, I was down near the beer section, where the walls are covered with posters from Budweiser and the like. Only, this time, they were changing posters, and there it was-the old counter/window from what I THINK was the Yum Yum Shop, many many moons ago. They must rely on the Market Basket across the street, and at some point, covered the old window up with beer posters. Was so odd because I had completely forgotten about that.

Demoulas is closed and they have a small mini store now open on the other side of the plaza.
They are getting ready to demo the building and build a new Market Basket, most likely the largest supermarket in New England ( I think I read it will be a tad bigger than their new Chelsea store.

Now the MB up the street will even be more busy and crazy since this store is closed.

They are planning to tear down Demoulas, Friendly's (thank GOD) as well as all the empty stores.

Obvi Im giving Market Basket 4 stars, why wouldn't I? Sorry, I meant Demoulas! This one is kind of more ghetto than the other one, I do hope they end up putting a huge one in its place, the whole plaza seems kinda shady.
Demoulas is the same as MB anyways so all the prices are the same (good!) and huge selection.

oh my god.  i fucking love this place.  it's like walking into a 1967 time warp.  i really wish they kept the old Muzak going.

the aisles are cramped and narrow.  there isn't a seafood counter, but they do offer seafood.  My guess is that they get it from the Market Basket two plazas over.

Does anyone know WTF is up with throwing saw dust on the floor when something has spilled?  One of my fondest childhood memories is sliding through the sawdust at Demoulas.

Believe it or not, the beer selection is quite good.  Seriously.

I live in the Boston area now, but always visit when i have a chance.  the facade of the building rules.  it says "Demoulas" in giant (and we're talking GIANT) neon letters.  It's the dinosaur of the plaza.  the other inhabitants have come and gone...Service Merchandise, Zayre*, Ames, Osco, a waterbed store, a bank and trust (boarded up next door), a car phone store, but perhaps the best in the plaza, a JC Penney catalog store.

anyway, i think this is the last Demoulas left.  i highly recommend you check it out.
