It's hard to top the 96th street 1/2/3 subway stop for quick food options. On the Southwest side you've got the Super Tacos cart (mmm) and on the Southeast side you've got a Delicioso Coco Helado cart.
One of their several locations (but the farthest south I've seen), these green and white umbrella carts tend to have 6 flavors to choose from. Despite the 'Helado' in their title, this isn't ice cream - I found it to be closest to Italian Ice.
The prices are ridiculoso - $0.75 for a small, $1.25 for a large.
I like the namesake 'Coco' (coconut) and Mango the best. Both taste something b/w the fruits and a really good virgin frozen mixed drink. Cherry is good but tastes similar to standard Italian ice. Lemon is the only disappointing flavor I've had - just doesn't have the tartness to balance against the sweet.
4 stars for the ice - 1 more star for the great value....Listed in: Stands, Vans, and Carts....., UWS Sweet Tooth

Missing the coco helado lady these days. I guess we're a few months off from seeing the cart again. When she's out, there's always a nice selection and the flavors are quite strong. Can't beat it for a buck.

Scrumptious sorbet that ranks among my very favorite concoctions in New York. At the 96th St red line stop, this tiny green and white cart serves up rich sorbet in tropical flavors like mango, pineapple, tamarind and coconut. My favorite is the coconut, which is just deliciously milky. It's super fast, and best of all, it costs 75 cents for the small size and $1 for the large one. Comes in a squashable Dixie cup with no spoon.
It's so cheap, delicious and convenient that I can't imagine why you'd go anywhere else (*cough*TastiDLite*cough*). I grab a cup when I'm on my way home, or sometimes on my way out of the house to help me stay cool. This place makes leaving the house on a hot summer day a bearable prospect.
(Other locations include Broadway near Spring Street, and 125th and Lenox.)Listed in: UWS, Represent!, Frozen Refreshments

The rainbow is the best because it tastes like lemon, but the coconut and all the others are good too! ITS ONLY A DOLLAR. Refreshing!

These places can be found all over the city, but are most plentiful in more hispanic neighborhoods (Washington Heights, Bushwick, etc.). And they are AMAZING. They are my number 1 summer weakness. My fave is the coconut, but all are good. Some have more flavors than others (lemon-lime is hard to find but does exist). They are also more expensive the closer to down-town you are. But most are about a dollar. Que rico!

For all of those that walk pass the green and white striped umbrella cart, and have no idea what they have, you should definately give it a shot! For the noobies, they sell flavored shaved ice. The ice is much smoother then snow cones and i would put it on the same smoothness as Hawaiian shaved ice. I have tried all of the flavors individual, and a couple of the flavors. Off the top of my head I know they offer Mango, cherry, coconut, lime/pineapple, chocolate. My favorite is the mango/cherry combination. They give you 2 scoops in a plastic cup for 1 dollar!! you cant beat that kind of price. My wifes favorite is cherry/coconut combination. This treat is absolutely a must for those hot summer days. Give it a shot..especially for only 1 buck!

I love the lady who operates the ice cart on W 96th! After walking 20 blocks in the hot sun (or walking out of the gym), her cart is like an oasis. She's always so polite and happy to scoop me some refreshing flavored ice. My favorite is the tamarind (tastes like sweetened iced tea), which is always available (unlike pineapple, coconut, and mango, which sell out by the end of the day). $.75 for a small and $1.00 for a large - can't beat those prices.

So you just got off the subway at 96th and you see the signs that say East Side of Broadway / West Side of Broadway. Whichever way you're going, choose East Side of Broadway. That's where the Delicioso Coco Helado cart is, and it's fantastic. I had the cherry flavor. They come in three sizes from $1 to $3. For those of you who don't know what this is, it is somewhere in between Italian ice and frozen lemonade. I would definitely recommend it.

I guess I'm one of the few that think the flavour isn't great. I've only had the mango at 104 and broadway and it actually tastes quite artificial and I was a bit disappointed. What I do agree on is that they're dirt cheap and great for cooling down.

This is a review for the 110th & Broadway location - I had the Mango and the Lime sorbet, and it was just DELICIOUS! Great little treat while you're on your way in this hot New York weather! LOVED IT, and it was only a $1!!!
