The Deli Pub is a Bernal Heights favorite, but only a recent discovery of mine. Being a native San Franciscan, it amazes me to find places this good and this local that I never knew about. My friend Rosy knows her food, so when she said we should go to the Deli Pub because they have the best pastrami sandwiches - I agreed. The plants that are over growing the wall makes this place feel cozy like you are in a backyard.

We ordered two special sandwiches , Pastrami and garlic on a soft roll. Yummy hand carved pastrami, provolone, toasted with garlic - then fresh tomato, lettuce and onion added for that melty-yet-crisp-toasty sandwich. The only thing this needed was some mustard to compliment the pastrami.

With our sandwiches, we had iced coffees that were so good I downed it like water. The coffee was aromatic and tasted like a Turkish coffee. Mmmm.

The owner asked me how I liked this sandwich and I told him, it was 8.5 of 10 - but I lied, I'm giving him 5 stars out of 5.

When I work around Bernal Heights, this is my favorite spot to eat. Quiet, cozy, and unpretentious.

The sandwiches are top notch. So so good, and filling. The owner is very nice and is the only employee. He'll make your sandwiched with love and chat you up with stories while you wait.

If Sanford and Son decided to open a deli I imagine it would look something like Deli Pub.

You could walk by this place a hundred times and never even realize that you could go in and get a sandwich. I know this because I've walked past it a hundred times (at least) before going in. I didn't even think it was open because there are no lights on and any natural light gets obscured by completely overgrown houseplants.

Once you get inside (and you'll have to duck under one of the biggest ficus I've ever seen) you'll find it looks like an old person's living room. Kinda dark and sad with outdated and worn furniture. Stacks of old magazines, a piano and an eclectic mix of objects d'art. There's a fish tank against the wall that is only 2/3 full due to, I can only assume, evaporation and neglect. (It's a good thing goldfish are known for their heartiness and longevity.) If you look in the back kitchen you'll see stacks of dirty dishes and just general chaos.

Everything seems kind of dusty and greasy. Including the guy who runs the place. He's a short guy with with balding greasy hair pulled back into a ponytail wearing a rumpled shirt with a tail hanging out the front and a button undone. Pants that are WAY too big. There's a couch there and I wouldn't be surprised AT ALL if that dude sleeps there. Did I mention that he has a lazy eye? It's too perfect. You come inside and look around and say to yourself "What the fuck?" Then you see this dude and you're like "Oh, okay, well now it makes sense."

The reason I can go into such detail about the surroundings is because these sandwiches...take...so...long...to...make. You can hear him doing shit back there but seriously, 15 minutes...for a sandwich? And I'm the only one here? I've been here a couple of times and it ALWAYS takes a while. It's not like he's making souffles. Anyway, it's a pretty good sandwich but you've got to really want it.

Warm, cozy and full of plants.  This is the best place to have lunch on a rainy day.

But not if you're a germaphobe.  Personally, I was raised by hippies, so dust doesn't freak me out that much.  That's a requirement for contented patronage here, because the cleaning that goes down is selective.  What's easy to reach gets dusted.  Everything else... eh.  I try not to think about it, because the spinach pie with hummus is really delicious.

But what I love best about this place is that it's like a time capsule to 1977.  With all the changes that have gone down in the neighborhood, that's a pretty amazing achievement.  If we don't patronize it and this spot turns into a Jamba Juice or a Victoria's Secret, we'll have no one but ourselves to blame.

Every so often you come to an establishment that is definitive of its surroundings. The Deli Pub is such a place. With quaint seating arrangement that spurns crowds and encourages nestled gatherings. The food is prepared based on your karmic comportment, that is, you get what you deserve. Apparently I deserved more than I expected. I owe a debt of gratitude to Deep C. for introducing me to what is now among my favorite hangouts in the city. Another true San Francisco gem.

This is another one of these places that you wonder how it stays in business.  There is never anyone in there and it feels a little dilapidated.  It seems to be run by this one not-so-friendly guy who makes a good sandwich, but takes foooorrrrrreeevvvver to do it.  Why bother when you could get a delicious grilled falafel across the street at Progressive Grounds?

So I was a little afraid of this place at first, it's very dark and when you look in from outside it looks like a jungle, but then one fine day a friend of mine wanted to get a sandwich there, so I figured what the hell, I went in, it's kind of like someone's living room very small, there's a dining table, a piano, and a little man behind a counter. To make a long story short, they make a good pastrami and garlic sandwhich that I'm now addicted to. Don't let the outside and the darkness intimidate you. They slice everything to order right there in front of you , in this guys living room, and there is always good jazz playing to keep you company why you wait, because there is never any one in there.

i finally tried deli pub today, foregoing an Avedano's grilled panini for a pastrami with garlic (!) ensconced in a baguette with onions and such from deli pub. for a mere $5.95 plus tax, I emerged with a sandwich that attracted my office mates left and right (must be the garlic! tee hee) "Something smells wonderful!" they exclaimed, as I passed their desks. smells and TASTES wonderful, I'd say.  though simple and no -nonsense was the sandwich, the flavor was exquisite. just enough pastrami and other goodness to create a lovely symphony of deliciousness that serenaded my tastebuds exquisitely. it's a little dark inside the place, but i noticed some bottled beers and such, and it did make me think twice about getting my sandwich to go instead of plopping myself on one of the cozy couches.

This has got to be the best kept secret in SF.  It's like Jumanji!  The amazing plants, the jazz music, the personable owner make this place really special.   I recommend the Hummus plate or the pastrami.  It's one of a kind,  and 100% San Francisco!

I have walked by this joint a million times. I don't know what possesed me to walk in, but I'm glad I did. We're going to become regulars. The owner was very generous and the space is comfortable and warm. Grab the bongo, say hi to Dexter (the fish) and hang out awhile in this easy place to chill.

Deli Pub takes a bit of courage to walk into, but once you do, it's an oddly comforting space. It really is a living room where you can pay very reasonable prices for food that is prepared to order. Sure, you'll have to wait a bit, but what the hell - where else can you listen to nice jazz, admire massive houseplants, read newspapers and magazines, and wonder how this place stays afloat?

Never been there for lunch, always for dinner, and never ordered off the menu, it's just really what he is making. If you want vegetarian, the best thing is to ask him to make you something. You have no idea how much it will cost, that will be arranged after you're done, but the food is relatively good. He may throw in some special cheese or olives if you are lucky. Good beer selection.

The only way I've been able to determine when it's open is to see if the door is ajar, it's a split door, the top will be open, the bottom closed generally. The "Open" sign is usually never lit for some reason.

Give Deli Pub a chance, this is one of those places that you'll never find in a suburb full of chain restaurants. Plus, it only has 3 tables, the rest are taken over by houseplants.

I side with the 4-5 star reviews. We found Deli Pub while roaming aimlessly around Bernal Heights looking for salad, and have no regrets about going in. Sure, the food took a long time to arrive. Sure, the interior could be cleaner. But whatever. The hummus plate comes with whole warm roasted garlic cloves on top, and the baba ghanoush is non-processed, the kind where you can taste every ingredient that went into it. On sunny days, the whole room is filled with light. It's a great place to sit by the window, catch up on the news, and enjoy a slightly slower paced life.
